What you can do with FluentU
• Do personalized quizzes with speaking.
• Understand and truly enjoy real-world videos.
• Learn new words in multiple contexts.
Reviews from users
FluentU is a great method to learn a foreign language. We watch videos with subtitles and at any time, we can stop the video if we don’t understand a word or an expression. We click on for additional explanations. Then, we have a quiz to work the vocabulary. I find this method very interesting to improve and stay motivated.
—Estelle Jaouen
I appreciate being able to hear the pronunciation from a male and female voice. I think the mix of characters and pinyin are great and well-balanced. I love the fact that I’ve only been doing this for less than a month and I already know dozens of useful phrases and words!
—Maria van Eeden
I like the fact that it’s very dynamic and not grammar focused. Also, having many videos to learn from makes it even less boring no matter where you are as long as you have a smart phone. I like to just watch each video one time, pause at each sentence and try to remember words and sentences.
—Eduard Marius
The best thing about FluentU is that you have direct context for each new vocabulary that you learn. Repeating the dialogues is the way I learn. Also, that you can bring in your own vocabulary list and that the program searches for videos or material in which the words are included are remarkable!
—Jan Rehmer

David loved his grandson Philip dearly. The boy reminded him of himself at an early age. They had a lot of fun together, exploring the backyard and hiking in the nearby park. However, one weekend, Philip felt ill and had to stay in bed. David made sure to keep his grandson entertained by finding a book they could enjoy together.
Before handing it to Philip, he decided to leaf through it and look back at the story. However, while looking through it, he didn’t expect to see another piece of his youth, this time in the form of a photograph of him and his old friends. There were four in the picture — David, Steve, Dorothy, and Teresa. They were neighbors and often went to the beach together. In the photo, the four of them were playing on the sand.
Suddenly, David wondered about the people in the photograph, curious to know where life had taken them.
Philip noticed that and asked “What happened, Grandpa?” David smiled, excitedly taking the book and the photo to Philip. “Look, Philip. This is an old photo of my friends and me!” he said. “I wish I could meet them again.” Philip suggested looking for them on Facebook. Through Philip’s tablet, they searched for David’s friends. To Philip’s surprise, they weren’t on the social media platform.
David decided to go to his hometown to find Steve, Dorothy, and Teresa. The town had changed a lot and he found that Dorothy’s and Steve’s houses were no longer there. Still hopeful, David decided to visit the last address, which was Teresa’s. A young girl opened the door. “I’m sorry, young lady. I was just looking for Teresa Green, but I might have gotten the address wrong,” he said.
Suddenly, the girl shouted, “Grandma, you have a visitor!”
4. Why did David find a book to enjoy with Philip?
A Because Philip was entertained most by books.
B. Because David intended to show Philip a picture.
C. Because David remembered something in the book.
D. Because Philip was not in good condition on that day.
5. What surprised David as he was looking through the book?
A. A leaf. B. A picture. C. Some friends. D. Some beach tours.
6. How did Philip help David search for his friends?
A. By posting the picture online. B. By visiting them with David.
C. By giving away his tablet as a gift. D. By looking for them on Facebook.
7. What might the following paragraph probably be about?
A. David told Philip about the wrong addresses.
B. David talked with the girl about some life lessons.
C. David and Teresa managed to contact Steve and Dorothy.
D. David apologized sincerely for the trouble he had caused.

Natural selection is the process by which one type of animal within a species thrives because of certain qualities that make it more likely to live than others in its group. The history of the peppered moth (灰蛾) is an example of the natural selection process.
In nineteenth-century England, certain types of peppered moths were able to better blend (融合) into their surroundings. During that time period, great changes were happening in Great Britain. The Industrial Revolution was part of this change, and with it came air pollution. Natural selection often takes hundreds or even thousands of years to occur. For the peppered moth, this process occurred comparatively (相对地) quickly.
At the beginning of the Industrial Age, most peppered moths in England were light-colored and covered with black markings, although a few moths had dark-colored wings. Because the light-colored moths blended into the light-colored bark on the trees, they could not be easily seen by birds that would eat them. As the air grew more polluted, however, tree trunks became covered with soot (煤烟) and became darker. The light-colored moths became easy for birds to see against the dark tree trunks. Since the dark-colored moths now had the advantage, their numbers grew. Within 50 years, the peppered moth went from being mostly light-colored to being mostly dark-colored.
In the twentieth century, the air cleared up, and the peppered moth population changed again. As tree trunks lightened due to less soot in the air, light-colored moths once again had an advantage. Their numbers increased as soot levels declined (下降). Depending on their environment, the coloration of the moths helped them to be “naturally selected” to survive.
8. Which of the following can replace the word “thrives” in the first paragraph?
A. reduces B. endangers C. increases D. changes
9. What do we know about the peppered moth’s natural selection process?
A. The length of time was unusual.
B. It was a good example of environmental protection.
C. This type of color change was typical for moths.
D. The soot levels in England did not affect it.
10. What can we learn from the third paragraph?
A. The color of moths was unimportant.
B. Both kinds of moths preferred the dark-colored trees.
C. There were more light-colored moths than dark-colored moths.
D. The number of moths had something to do with the level of air pollution.
11. Which would most likely happen if soot darkened England’s trees again?
A. Birds would eat fewer moths.
B. Moths would not be able to stay alive.
C. The population of dark-colored moths would increase.
D. Light-colored moths would disturb people’s life.
D
Music can have a strong effect on our emotions. But what happens when we listen to music in a live setting? Do our brains react differently depending on whether the music we’re listening to is live or recorded?
A team of researchers at the University of Zurich led by Sascha Frühholz, professor of cognitive and affective neuroscience (神经学), has now explored this question. The researchers investigated the effects of live music and recorded music on emotional processes in the human brain.
They conducted an experiment in which a pianist changed the live music he was playing to increase the emotional reactions in the amygdala (杏仁体), the emotional center in the brain. During the experiment, the researchers used magnetic resonance imaging (磁共振成像) to measure the activity in the amygdala of the 27 listeners as well as the performer in real time. Based on these measurements, the pianist then adapted his performance to further increase the audience’s emotions. To compare reactions, the listeners were played a recording of the same music performed by the same musician.
“Our study showed that live music caused much higher and more long-lasting activity in the amygdala than recorded music. The live performance also brought about a more active exchange of information in the whole brain,” says Frühholz.
People have always used instruments to make live music. It wasn’t until technical advances in the early 20th century that music was able to be recorded and made widely spread to all people. Even today, though, despite music streaming platforms and high-quality loudspeakers and headphones, the social experience of attending a live concert cannot be taken place of.
12. Why does the author raise questions in paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To present an argument.
C. To call for different answers. D. To make a survey among readers.
13. How did the researchers get the results?
A. By observing listeners’ brain reaction.
B. By encouraging listeners to play the piano.
C. By investigating listeners’ memory of music.
D. By asking listeners to comment on the pianist.
14. What kind of effects can be caused by live music?
A. The same effect as the recorded music. B. Listeners’ longer emotional experience.
C. Equal pleasant and unpleasant emotions. D. Less exchange of information in the brain.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Great Musician: A Guide of Amygdala’s Magic Trip
B. Recorded Piano Music: A Soul’s Impressive Adventure
C. Music’s Big Power: A Life’s Emotional Transformation
D. Live Music’s Unique Effect: A Brain’s Emotional Journey

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Although Lora Hudgens was already 71 years old, she bravely took a course at a driving school. During her first day, her classmates, aged 16 to 24, wondered what an old lady like her would be doing there. “She won’t even pass the written test,” one of her classmates said very quietly to another. “I couldn’t agree more!” the other man added. They laughed as they said this.
“She’s wasting her time and money on this course.” another boy said. Lora didn’t care and just listened to the instructor (教练) carefully. Lora got great grades in her first exam, and her classmates were surprised that she made it. She was going to join the rest of them in taking their driving tests at the Department of Motor Vehicles (车管局).
While waiting for their turn at the DMV, one of Lora’s classmates approached her. “I know you’ve probably heard all the talk about you, madam.” he told her. “But why do you want a driver’s license (驾照) at your age?” Lora smiled as if she had been waiting for someone to ask her all this time. She said that she was doing it for her sick grandson.
Her grandson Jack had one wish — he wanted to go camping for a week in a nearby state. Lora promised that she would take him there, but she didn’t have a driver’s license. “That’s why I have to get one.” she explained. The man felt terrible at once. He regretted making fun of Lora. “You’re such an admirable woman.” he replied. “Your grandson is lucky to have you as his grandmother.”
Lora continued to explain that when Jack’s parents left him, she promised to give him a good life. She hoped taking him out for a camping trip could make him happy and get well soon. “His birthday is coming up in two weeks, so I need to pass the test today.” she told the man determinedly.
Paragraph 1: Later, the man told the rest of his classmates why Lora took the course.

Paragraph 2:Finally, Lora completed her test without error.
