A walrus (海象) appeared in the town of Scarborough. As news spread, thousands of people came to see him. An Arctic walrus doesn’t show up in a British town every day. Then the police protected the area to stop anyone from harming the walrus called Thor. During the night, Thor appeared to be afraid of some passing cars and lights, which led wildlife protectors and the local government to reconsider the town’s New Year’s Eve fireworks show and to decide to provide him with a quiet environment.
The Sea Life Scarborough Aquarium shared a photo of Thor resting near the water along with a notice: “Please try not to disturb him. While it is an exciting opportunity for us, naturally he does not like lots of noise, so please stay away from him. Hopefully, within a few days he will have got enough rest to continue his trips!”
As it turned out, Thor did return to the sea several days later. Dan Jarvis, from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue, said, “Thor is heading in the right direction. But walruses increasingly being seen in European waters could be a sign of climate change causing a loss of sea ice. Walruses feed mainly on shellfish on the seafloor, but they use sea ice to rest. With less sea ice in their habitat, they may wander to find land on which to rest. People will have to get advice from experts about how to deal with it.”
When it comes to fireworks, even local wildlife and pets can find them stressful. Fireworks shows have been shown to cause panic responses in birds. They can also result in pets trying to escape from familiar environments out of fear. And wildlife centers are often flooded with wild animals after a holiday. Therefore, many cities are trying to replace fireworks with light shows.
4. What did people in Scarborough do?
A. They replaced fireworks shows with light shows.
B. They cancelled a fireworks show to protect a walrus.
C. They helped a walrus settle down in the new environment.
D. They brought a walrus safely to his natural habitat.
5. Why did The Sea Life Scarborough Aquarium ask people not to disturb Thor?
A. Thor needed enough rest to continue its trip.
B. Thor was a rare and protected species.
C. They wanted to keep Thor in the fireworks show.
D. They wanted to keep Thor in the aquarium.
6. What do Dan Jarvis’ words mainly suggest?
A. Walruses have got used to life without sea ice.
B. European waters provide enough food for walruses.
C. Walruses are always seeking the right land to live on.
D. Walruses’ living environment is under threat.
7. Why does the author mention local wildlife and pets?
A To draw people’s attention to animals.
B. To stress the dangers faced by animals.
C. To show ill effects caused by fireworks.
D. To compare animals’ different responses.
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. D 7. C

Jingxi Taiping Drum is a traditional form of dancing that is popular in the Mentougou District of Beijing. It was included in the first batch of China’s national intangible cultural heritage items in 2006.
The earliest historical references of this art date back to the Spring and Autumn Period and describe how it was used in some ceremonies to drive away evil spirits and pray for good fortune. At the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, it started to gain popularity in and around the capital, and then by the end of the Qing Dynasty, it was introduced to the Mentougou District of Beijing. Now, this type of drum dance is performed during the last and first month of the lunar year in many local festival activities.
A Taiping Drum is made up of a shell, a cloth skin, and a handle with a handful of decorative rings, and this single-sided drum is usually played with a wooden stick. The shape of the instrument gives it the appearance of a fan. The drums are often painted with flowers and flames, representing people’s wish for a better future. During a performance, a drummer performs various dance moves while holding the drum in his or her left hand and a stick in his or her right hand.
During the 21st century, efforts have been made by the Mentougou District to preserve this folk dance form, like establishing a local Taiping Drum group and providing drum teaching materials for young generations. In addition, four schools in the Mentougou District were designated as culture inheritance bases of Jingxi Taiping Drum.
Jingxi Taiping Drum has been performed in local villages as well as on national and international stages. It has been performed in some big events, such as the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing. In 2006 and 2007, it was performed in overseas Olympic promotional activities in Australia and the United States. Today, the time-honored folk art, which is liked by many young people, is presenting its lively artistic charm on a global stage.
8. Why was Jingxi Taiping Drum used in some ceremonies originally?
A. To introduce an entertainment.
B. To bring people wealth directly.
C. To ward off evil and bring good fortune.
D. To symbolize the local culture in Mentougou District.
9. What does the underlined word “designated” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Decorated. B. Selected. C. Established. D. Developed.
10. What can we infer about the drum if a cultural exchange event were to be held abroad next year?
A. It would be less important. B. It would attract huge audiences.
C. It would face challenges. D. It would be criticized.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. History and development of Jingxi Taiping Drum.

A new study has revealed that the chemicals in air pollution may rob some flowers of their scent (香味) and make them more difficult for pollinators (传粉者) to find. The researchers discovered that nitrate radicals (NO3) and ozone (NO3), common by-products of car waste gas and burning fossil fuels, are main pollutants that weaken the wildflowers’ scent.
Ecologist Jeremy Chan and his colleagues put bags over pale evening primrose flowers to trap the flowers’ scent. They took the scent back to the lab, along with some hawkmoths. Hawkmoths are one of the pollinators drawn to the primrose’s scent. Then they released the primrose’s scent and hawkmoths into the air flowing into a wind tunnel. At once, they watched the moths easily flying upwind and tracking the scent. But it was a different story when pollutants, like ozone and nitrate radicals, were added to the mix. Now, the moths flew in a wavy line. They seemed to be seeking the scent — often without success.
The team then tested its findings in nature. One cold night, they set up a field of artificial and real flowers. They found moths had up to a 70% decline in accuracy of finding the flower sources when nitrate radicals were introduced. The same reactions could hurt flower scent by day. But because sunlight can break down much of the ozone, the problem is likely less serious for day pollinators.
In January, scientists published a separate study on the potential impacts of air pollution on insect pollination. That study similarly noted how air pollutants can impact flower scent as well as visual clues, such as plant petal (花瓣) size and potential color.
The growing research on how air pollutants affect pollinators and plants highlights the dangers of air pollution to insect pollinators. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, 40% of global insect pollinators are endangered. If pollution remains serious, it will further threaten the pollinators and the plants’ reproduction.
12. What makes it harder for pollinators to locate flowering plants?
A. The short flowering season.
B. The terrible smell in the air.
C. The breakdown of the flower scent.
D. The unappealing appearance of flowers.
13. How did researchers carry out the study?
A. By analyzing typical cases. B. By referring to another study.
C. By collecting previous records. D. By combining lab and field tests.
14. What can be inferred about night pollinators from paragraph 3?
A. They fly longer than day pollinators.
B. They are sensitive to polluted flowers.
C. They certainly search fruitlessly for scent clues.
D. They face a greater threat than day pollinators.
15. What is the author’s real purpose in mentioning the study in January?
A. To compare it with the new study.
B. To evaluate the role pollinators play.
C. To stress the urgency of reducing pollution.
D. To erase doubts about the findings of the new study.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. D 15. C

【导语】本文是说明文。文中讲述,根据一项新的研究表明,空气污染中的化学物质会降解花香,使传粉者难以找到开花植物,进而影响植物繁殖。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“...the chemicals in air pollution may rob some flowers of their scent and make them more difficult for pollinators to find. (空气污染中的化学物质可能会剥夺一些花的气味,使传粉者更难找到它们)”可知,选项C“花香的降解”使得传粉者更难找到开花植物。故选C.
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“They took the scent back to the lab, along with some hawkmoths.(他们把气味和一些飞蛾带回了实验室)”和第三段前两句“The team then tested its findings in nature. One cold night, they set up a field of artificial and real flowers. (研究小组随后在自然界中测试了他们的发现。在一个寒冷的夜晚,他们在一块地里种上了人造和真花)”可知,研究人员是通过选项D的“实验室和实地试验”开展研究的。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段最后两句“The same reactions could hurt flower scent by day. But because sunlight can break down much of the ozone, the problem is likely less serious for day pollinators. (同样的反应也会损害白天的花香。但由于阳光可以分解大部分臭氧,所以这个问题对白天授粉的昆虫来说可能不那么严重)”,夜间没有阳光分解臭氧,臭氧会集聚更多,这进一步加大了夜间传粉者寻找食物的难度,可推知选项D“与白天传粉者相比它们面临更大的生存威胁”。故选D。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“That study similarly noted how air pollutants can impact flower scent as well as visual clues... (该研究同样指出了空气污染物是如何影响花香和视觉线索的……)”和最后一段“The growing research… highlights the dangers of air pollution to in-sect pollinators. (越来越多的研究……强调了空气污染对昆虫传粉媒介的危害)”可知,作者提到一月份的研究是为了强调空气污染对传粉昆虫的危害性,也就是选项C“减少污染的紧迫性”。故选C。

47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Tim had always struggled with his weight. He loved food, but at school, he often found himself the target of cruel jokes and teasing.
His classmates would call him names like “Big Tim” and make fun of his size, and though Tim tried to ignore it, it still hurt. Every day, he wished he could be like the athletic kids, running fast and playing sports with ease, but that always seemed out of reach.
One day, a group of his classmates — three boys who were notorious for their pranks (恶作剧) — decided to play a trick on him. They knew Tim wasn’t athletic, and they thought it would be funny to sign him up for the upcoming school’s long-distance race. They figured he’d panic when he found out and that it would be fun to watch him fail. Without telling Tim, they registered his name for the race.
On race day, as Tim walked across the track trying to join his classmates in the stands, he saw some of them holding giant posters of his face with slogans like “The Big Runner” and “Go Tim!” He froze. He realized what had happened — the boys had tricked him into racing. His face turned red with embarrassment, but the crowd was already watching, and he felt trapped.
The starting gun fired, and to everyone’s surprise, Tim began to jog. It wasn’t fast, and he could barely keep up with the other runners, but he kept moving. His legs burned with each step, and his breath came in sharp gasps, but he didn’t stop. His classmates’ laughter echoed in his ears, but he ignored it.
As the race went on, something shifted. A few students who weren’t part of the prank started cheering for him. “Come on, Tim! You can do it!” they yelled. Their encouragement made Tim feel lighter, and his pace picked up just a little. It wasn’t about winning anymore; it was about proving to himself that he could finish.
注意:
1. 写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
By the time Tim reached the final lap, he was tired out.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
By the time Tim reached the final lap, he was tired out. His legs felt like lead, and his chest tightened with every breath. Pain seared through him, but he pressed through, eyes fixed on the finish line. The crowd, now cheering for him, seemed to lift his spirits. With a final burst of energy, Tim propelled his legs forward, ignoring the burning in his muscles. As he crossed the finish line, his legs buckled beneath him, and he collapsed onto the grass, gasping for air. But a huge smile spread across his face — he had made it. Against all odds, he had finished.
The crowd erupted in applause. His classmates, who had once mocked him, were now standing and clapping and shouting his name. The boys who had set up the prank walked over, looking guilty. “We’re sorry, Tim,” one of them said. “You were amazing. ” Tim smiled, his breath still coming in short bursts. “Thanks,” he said. Winning didn’t matter. He’d finished, exceeding his own expectations. The teasing ceased. He’d shown strength isn’t in size, but in heart. He’d proven he could achieve more than anyone thought.

C. It would face challenges. D. It would be criticized.

One cold night they set up a field of artificial and real flowers.

A. They fly longer than day pollinators.
B. They are sensitive to polluted flowers.
C. They certainly search fruitlessly for scent clues.
D. They face a greater threat than day pollinators.
15. What is the author’s real purpose in mentioning the study in January?
