It has been five years since I left my staff job and became self-employed. I remember my terror as I walked out of the office for the last time and the excitement when I sold my first piece days later. Working for yourself, setting your own hours and being responsible for your success or failure are exciting. I left my job just as summer was starting, and my first few months were as blissful as the fair days.
When winter came, an office where someone else paid for the heating system and my salary was guaranteed seemed attractive. January is tough for freelancers (自由职业者), and it was no different for me — after masses of work, I earned none. I shared my fears with some businesswomen I knew — what if the reality would be more like what I was experiencing?
Whether through choice or circumstance, the number of freelancers is rising and, if you’re just starting out, it is scary. I’ve been lucky that these women making money their own way shared key lessons about what it takes.
You can’t feel half-hearted about what you do because, at some point, you’re going to have painful days. When that happens, you have to remember why you wanted this life in the first place. Don’t quit your job for something that you think might be more interesting, quit it for something you can’t stop thinking about.
Setting up a business is tough. Rather than waiting until all is perfect, go for the moment when it feels as if momentum (势头) is with you. Look after yourself. There is no sick pay when you are self-employed. You can’t do a bad day’s work and blame it on your boss. You are the backbone of your business and you need to prioritize your health and well-being. Rest regularly and find like-minded people to support you and lift you up when things get hard.
Finally, enjoy it. Freedom is yours and, if you can make it work, there is nothing better.
4. How did the author feel when she was self-employed in paragraph 1?
A. Pleased. B. Challenged. C. Awful. D. Bored.
5. What bothered the author when winter came?
A. Masses of freelance work. B. Failure to meet daily basics.
C. The change in her own taste. D. The unexpected cold weather.
6. According to the author, why should we quit for a new job?
A. To escape from the current pain. B. To satisfy our temporary interests.
C. To pursue what we really desire. D. To explore where our strengths lie.
7. What’s the author’s probable attitude towards becoming freelancers?
A. Unclear. B. Critical. C. Favorable. D. Cautious.

Tourists visiting Tokyo can now take part in a special tour of the city’s modern wonder:public toilets. Penelope Panczuk recently went on a two-hour tour known as Tokyo Toilet Shuttle to explore the city’s artistic public bathrooms. She got the idea after seeing the Oscar-nominated film Perfect Days, which describes the life of a toilet cleaner in the city’s Shibuva district.
Among Japan’s most-loved technological exports in recent years are its toilets produced by TOTO. The devices have cleansing sprays. heated seats music, and more. In response to this trend, the nonprofit Nippon Foundation started the Tokyo Toilet Project in 2020. It asked creators, including Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando, to develop new toilets. The goal was to improve the functionality and artistry of 17 public toilets in the Shibuya district, making them more welcoming and enjoyable for users.
While the project was not intended as a tourist attraction, Shibuya’s government saw an opportunity to draw visitors to the area beyond its famous street crossing. The Tokyo Toilet Shuttle tour now takes visitors to nine unique public toilets, allowing visitors to explore the less-visited parts of Shibuya while checking out the toilets. This is a highlight for visitors.
“In the U. S. or France, where I originally come from, you just don’t go,” Panczuk said of using public bathrooms. She added that in Tokyo, the bathrooms are extremely clean. It feels like a new discovery every time she visits. Tourists pay $32.76 to visit nine different toilets in the Shibuya district, each with unique designs. The toilets include one with clear walls that turn opaque when users enter.Another is operated by voice commands. It’s unusual, unique, and honestly brilliant.
8. What inspired Penelope Panczuk to visit Tokyo’s public toilets?
A. The film Perfect Days.
B. A friend’s recommendation.
C. His curiosity about Tokyo’s cleaners.
D. A travel brochure about Japanese cities.
9. Why was the Tokyo Toilet Project started?
A. To assist architects in Tokyo.
B To promote TOTO’s products.
C. To improve toilet users’ experience.
D. To increase toilets in the Shibuya district.
10. What highlights the Tokyo Toilet Shuttle tour?
A. Free guide service.
B. Famous street crossing.
C. A show of technological wonders.
D. Less-visited areas with unique toilets.
11. The underlined word“opaque” in the last paragraph probably means.
A. complex B. foggy
C. uneven D. beneficial
D
To show empathy (共情) is to identify with another’s feelings. It is to emotionally put yourself in the place at another. The ability to empathize is directly dependent on your ability to feel your own feelings and identify them.
If you have never felt a certain feeling, it will be hard for you to understand how another person is feeling. If you have never put your hand in a flame, you will not know the pain of fire. If you have not experienced jealousy (妒嫉), you will not understand its power. Reading about a feeling and intellectually knowing about it is very different than actually experiencing it for yourself.
Among those with an equal level of emotional intelligence, the person who has actually experienced the widest range and variety of feelings — the great depths of depression and the heights of fulfillment, for example — is the one who is most able to empathize. On the other hand, when we say that someone “can’t relate to” other people, it is likely because they haven’t experienced, acknowledged or accepted many feelings of their own. Once you have felt discriminated (歧视) against, for example, it is much easier to relate with someone else who has been discriminated against. Our innate emotional intelligence gives us the ability to quickly recall those instances and form associations when we encounter discrimination again. We then can use the “reliving” of those emotions to guide our thinking and actions. This is one of the ways nature slowly evolves towards a higher level of survival.
For this process to work, the first step is that we must be able to experience our own emotions. This means we must be open to them and not distract ourselves from them or try to numb (使麻木) ourselves from our feelings through drugs, alcohol, etc.
Next, we need to become aware of what we are actually feeling—to acknowledge, identify, and accept our feelings. Only then can we empathize with others. That is one reason why it is important to work on your own emotional awareness and sensitivity — in other words, to be “in touch with” your feelings.
12. How does the author explain the feelings of empathy?
A. By giving examples. B. By having classification.
C. By making comparison. D. By providing data.
13. Which statement may the author agree with?
A. Low level of empathy leads to fewer varieties of feelings.
B. The deeper one’s feelings are, the more empathetic one is.
C. Empathy is a way we recently picked up for better survival.
D. Rich experiences of emotions may go with a high level of empathy.
14. What’s the purpose of the last two paragraphs?
A. To advise a sincere attitude to one’s experiences.
B. To suggest a right understanding of empathy.
C. To recommend sensing and recognizing one’s emotions.
D. To call for true acceptance of one’s identity.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. How Empathy Unfolds B. Be Open to Your Emotions
C. Why Is Empathy Important D. Accept Your True Self

Li Ming was a 17-year-old exchange student from China. With a heart full of dreams and a little bit of nervousness, he flew to the United Kingdom to start a new adventure. He had always imagined what it would be like to walk through the historic streets of England and meet people from different parts of the world. But as soon as he arrived at his new school, he felt a little unsure.
In his new class, Li Ming struggled to start conversations with his British classmates. They spoke so quickly and used words and phrases he didn't understand. When he tried to join their conversations, he felt shy about his accent and worried that he might say something wrong. He also noticed that British students seemed to value their personal space more than he was used to, which made it even harder for him to find the right moment to start a meaningful talk.
Group work was even harder. During a group project in literature class, Li Ming had trouble explaining his ideas clearly, feeling like his ideas were getting lost in translation. And he started to
doubt himself.
Social events outside of class were just as difficult. At a school party, Li Ming watched his classmates laugh, dance, and sing along to the latest pop songs. He felt left out, not knowing the songs or the dance moves. He wanted to join the fun, but the fear of looking silly kept him on the sidelines.
One day, the school announced a talent show, Li Ming, who practiced traditional Chinese kung fu, really wanted to try. While he was hesitating, a group of British students interested in cultural performances invited him to join them. Li Ming agreed.

A. Pleased. B. Challenged. C. Awful. D. Bored.
5. What bothered the author when winter came?
A. Masses of freelance work. B. Failure to meet daily basics.

The devices have cleansing sprays. heated seats, music, and more.

A. To assist architects in Tokyo.
B. To promote TOTO’s products.

A. Free guide service.
B. Famous street crossing.
C. A show of technological wonders.
D. Less-visited areas with unique toilets.

A. complex B. foggy
C. uneven D. beneficial
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. B

C By making comparison.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

After the show, Li Ming noticed some changes happening.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
During their practice, the group was amazed by Li Ming’s Chinese kung fu. His fluid movements combining strength and grace drew gasps of admiration. When he demonstrated a dragon-style sequence, the British students clapped enthusiastically. Sensing their genuine interest, Li Ming offered to teach basic stances. In return, they taught him popular dance steps, blending Eastern and Western elements into their performance. Gradually, Li Ming found himself laughing naturally during rehearsals. The cultural exchange dissolved his anxiety, replacing it with collaborative joy. By performance day, their routine had transformed into a vibrant fusion of martial arts and modern dance.
After the show, Li Ming noticed some changes happening. Classmates greeted him warmly in corridors, asking about kung fu philosophies. In literature class, group members actively sought his interpretations, patiently listening to his accented English. At lunch breaks, students invited him to join conversations about cultural differences. The once-daunting school parties became opportunities to share Chinese pop songs. Most importantly, Li Ming stopped overthinking every interaction. He realized communication wasn’t about perfection, but sincere effort. Slowly, his initial adventure transformed into meaningful connections built on mutual curiosity and respect.
