Landslides are one of the most destructive natural disasters on the planet, causing billions of
dollars of damage and devastating loss of life every year.By introducing a new paradigm()for
studying landslide shapes and failure types,a global team of researchers has provided help for those
who work to predict landslides and risk evaluations.
Current predictive models rely on databases that do not generally include information on the
type of failure of mapped landslides.By using the aerial view (and elevation data of
landslide sites combined with machine learning, the researchers were able to achieve 80%-94%
percent accuracy in identifying landslide movements in diverse locations around the world.
"Our algorithm is not predicting landslides,"explained Malik, assistant professor in Rochester
Institute of Technology(RIT)School of Mathematics and Statistics."But the people who are in the
business of predicting landslides need to know more information about them, like what caused
them and what mechanisms they were."
Various locations were studied,including Italy,the United States,Denmark,Turkiye,and
China. The wide range of countries helped confirm the strength of the findings, since they can be
successfully used in diverse regions and climates.
"It was quite exhilarating when we saw the success numbers,"said Malik."We got the
results, which are really good, but we need to be able to connect these to reality."
The hope is that this deeper understanding of failure movements will help those who work to
predict deadly events and enhance the accuracy and reliability of hazard()and risk assessment
models, which will help save lives and reduce damage.
1.What does the new paradigm aim at?
A.Receiving help from various countries.
B.Evaluating the economic impact of landslides.
C.Mapping the locations of landslides worldwide.
D.Understanding landslide forms and damage types.
2.What is the advantage of the new method in landslides identification?
A.Convenient.
B.Economic.
C.Accurate.
D.Easy.
3.What does the underlined word "exhilarating"in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Relaxing.

In recent years, research has confirmed that providing students with meaningful feedback can
greatly improve their learning and achievement,l_It can even be counterproductive(适得其反
)especially if it's presented in a negative or corrective way.
To some degree,it is easier for the teacher and the student to receive a simple grade on an
assignment().2 It tells a student whether he has met the expectations of the assignment,
and it creates a simple way for a teacher to assess a student's work.
However, once the grade is on the paper,it pretty much becomes the only thing that matters.
3 Whatever work might have been done on the test is outweighed by the overall low
performance.
4 Many educational professors suggest a feedback-oriented(反馈导向的)learning system.
In the classroom, this system can shift the focus of the students from their final grades to mastery
of the material itself.Feedback is commentary on the student work, individualized to best consider
the needs of each student,personally.
A feedback-oriented learning system is something that every student can benefit from,
whether it is offered verbally,or through the traditional written words.5 Those students are
typically not challenged as much as they should be.While they still may earn an"A",it is helpful
to know what they could be doing to improve their work even further-another learning challenge
to engage in,and push them forward.
A.A grade is clear.
B.Be as specific as possible.
C.Even“A”students benefit,.
D.But not all feedback is equally effective.
E.Less advantaged learners can also benefit.
F.So how can we make students learn effectively from feedback?
G.Students are hardly interested in hearing what they did well when they see a low
grade.
