A. They are donated by several artists.
B. They are close to everyday life.
C. They are left unchanged.
【答案】18. A 19. A 20. C
【解析】
【原文】M: Good morning and welcome to the museum, one with a remarkable range of exhibits. My name is Greg, and I’ll tell you about the various collections as we go around. But before we go, let me just give you a taste of what we have here. Well, for one thing, we have a fine collection of 20th and 21st century paintings, many by very well-known artists. Then there are the 19th century paintings. The museum was opened in the middle of that century, and several of the artists each donated one work to get the museum started, as it were. So they’re of special interest to us. We feel closer to them than to other works. All our glass was left to the museum by its founder when he died in 1878. And in the terms of his will, we’re not allowed to add anything to that collection. He believed it was perfect in itself, and we don’t see any reason to disagree. Okay, that was something about the collections, and now here’s some more practical information in case you need it. Most of the museum facilities are downstairs, so you go down the stairs here.

When Jack Dawson was just 2-year-old, it became obvious that he dreamed about becoming a paramedic, an emergency caregiver. His grandfather owns a first response company in Staffordshire, England, and Jack would ride along in his ambulances with the flashing blue lights. By age three, he would start “randomly performing CPR on his toy bear, pressing its chest”, said his mother, Danielle. “My husband and I decided to teach him first aid. He loves it.” Jack quickly grasped the act of CPR, understanding the different recovery positions, and learned how to use a defibrillator, a machine that starts the heart beating again after a heart attack.
Then, at age seven, overseen by his father and other trainers, the youngster started to lead workshop sessions of his own for their charity. Tamworth Have A Heart, which aims to make Automated External Defibrillators (AED) publicly accessible and train people to use them confidently. Jack teaches both children and adults how to perform CPR and use defibrillators, while also keeping an eye on his town centre and checking that the public defibrillators’ pads and batteries are up to date and fit for use.
The sessions often draw 20 to 40 people and sometimes Jack gives presentations in front of 100 people. He does step-by-step demonstrations on how to perform CPR, informing people about the dangers — including looking into patients’ airways before pressing.
“He absolutely loves teaching,” Danielle said. “I’ve never seen him so confident before and the fact that he’s helping people to save a life determines him even more. I think people appreciate the information coming from a child, as it makes them think that if a 10-year-old can do it, then they can.”
Under the name “Mini Medic”, Jack has a page on social media posting training nights for those unable to attend. As a result of his community work, the 10-year old is a finalist for Children of Courage Birmingham Awards. Looking forward, Danielle said he was enthusiastic about going to university and being a paramedic.
24. What made Jack interested in becoming a paramedic?
A. His family influence. B. His childhood games.
C. His parents’ teaching. D. His like for ambulances.
25. What is the purpose of Tamworth Have A Heart?
A. To train children to be caregivers. B. To enhance downtown volunteering.
C. To promote the wide use of a device. D. To make lifesaving devices affordable.
26. What can we infer from Danielle’s words in Paragraph 4?
A. Adults tend to learn more from children. B. Children make better first-aid instructors.
C. Jack has too much confidence in teaching. D. Jack’s course inspires adults’ engagement.
27. Which of the following best describes Jack Dawson?
A. Cautious and manful. B. Ambitious and funny.
C. Passionate and caring. D. Lonely and dependent.
【答案】24. A 25. C 26. D 27. C

【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“His grandfather owns a first response company in Staffordshire, England, and Jack would ride along in his ambulances with the flashing blue lights.(他的祖父在英国斯塔福德郡拥有一家急救公司,杰克会乘坐他的救护车,车上有闪烁的蓝色灯光。)”可知,杰克从小就受到祖父的影响,对急救工作产生了兴趣。故选A。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Tamworth Have A Heart, which aims to make Automated External Defibrillators (AED) publicly accessible and train people to use them confidently.(Tamworth Have A Heart旨在让自动体外除颤器(AED)能够被公众使用,并培训人们自信地使用它们。)”可知,Tamworth Have A Heart的目的是推广自动体外除颤器的广泛使用。故选C。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“I’ve never seen him so confident before and the fact that he’s helping people to save a life determines him even more. I think people appreciate the information coming from a child, as it makes them think that if a 10-year-old can do it, then they can.(我从未见过他如此自信,而且他正在帮助人们拯救生命,这让他更加坚定。我认为人们喜欢从一个孩子那里得到信息,因为这会让他们觉得,如果一个10岁的孩子都能做到,那么他们也能。)”可知,丹妮尔认为杰克的课程激发了成年人的参与。故选D。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。文章中提到根据第一段中““My husband and I decided to teach him first aid. He loves it.” Jack quickly grasped the act of CPR, understanding the different recovery positions, and learned how to use a defibrillator, a machine that starts the heart beating again after a heart attack.(‘我丈夫和我决定教他急救。他很喜欢。’杰克很快掌握了心肺复苏术,了解了不同的恢复姿势,并学会了如何使用除颤器,一种在心脏病发作后使心脏重新跳动的机器。)”、第二段中“Then, at age seven, overseen by his father and other trainers, the youngster started to lead workshop sessions of his own for their charity.(然后,在他七岁的时候,在他父亲和其他教练的监督下,这个孩子开始为他们的慈善机构主持自己的研讨会。)”以及“Jack teaches both children and adults how to perform CPR and use defibrillators, while also keeping an eye on his town centre and checking that the public defibrillators’ pads and batteries are up to date and fit for use.(杰克教孩子和成人如何进行心肺复苏术和使用除颤器,同时也密切关注他的镇中心,检查公共除颤器的垫和电池是最新的,适合使用。)”
C
When traveling to a new country, there is so much to see and do. Nobody wants to spend their whole trip sleeping or feeling exhausted. Luckily, there are ways to drive away the ZZZs and make the most of your travel. New research from Arizona State University, links exercise with the body’s internal clock, opening the possibility of treating jet lag (时差反应) with a workout.
Both traveling to a different time zone and staying up late at night can severely disturb the body’s internal clock, including making the body release the sleep-causing chemical melatonin (褪黑素) at a time when people want to stay awake. When the internal master clock isn’t in line with the external clock of your destination, it creates a mismatch of all your body rhythms. That’s what lies at the heart of jet lag.
The researchers of the study used the level of melatonin released by the body to explore the effects of exercise on body’s internal clock. First, researchers measured the melatonin levels of 99 participants throughout the day to establish a baseline. Then, the participants were asked to exercise for an hour for three days in a row at different times, and their melatonin levels were monitored.
The researchers noted shifts in the melatonin levels of participants: correlated with their activity level. The study uncovered that morning (7 a, m,) or afternoon (1-4 p. m.) works shifted the internal clock forward, while evening (7-10 p. m.) exercise shifted it backward. “This is the first study to compare exercise’s effects on the body clock, and could open up the possibility of using exercise to help reduce the negative effects of jet lag and shift work.” Shawn, the lead researcher said.
For west-to-east travel, evening exercise can get rid of time zone shifts. For east-to-west travel, morning or afternoon workouts are beneficial. Exercise pushes your internal clock forward or backwards by regulating the amount of melatonin. Walking or cycling are great ways to see the sites, when traveling, while getting jet-lag beating exercise. So, pack your running shoes for your next trip!
28. What is the key factor causing jet lag according to the text?
A. Low melatonin. B. Shortened sleeping. C. Long travel tiredness. D. Body rhythm disorder.
29. How did researchers get the result?
A. By doing observations. B. By undertaking surveys.
C. By making comparisons. D. By integrating experience.
30. What does Shawn think of the study?
A. Overrated. B. Pathbreaking. C. Unrealistic. D. Conclusive.
31. Which exercise suits travelers flying from China to Canada?
A. Morning jogging. B. Evening swimming.
C. Mid-night cycling. D. Random-time walking.
【答案】28. D 29. C 30. B 31. A
根据第二段中“When the internal master clock isn’t in line with the external clock of your destination, it creates a mismatch of all your body rhythms. That’s what lies at the heart of jet lag.(当人体内部的主时钟与目的地的外部时钟不一致时,就会导致所有身体节律的不匹配。这正是时差反应的核心所在)”可知,导致时差反应的关键因素是身体节律紊乱。故选D项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“First, researchers measured the melatonin levels of 99 participants throughout the day to establish a baseline. Then, the participants were asked to exercise for an hour for three days in a row at different times, and their melatonin levels were monitored.(首先,研究人员全天测量了99名参与者的褪黑素水平,以建立一个基线。然后,要求参与者连续三天在不同时间进行一小时的运动,并监测他们的褪黑素水平)”可知,研究人员通过对比参与者运动前后以及不同时间运动时的褪黑素水平来得出结果。故选C项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中Shawn的话“This is the first study to compare exercise’s effects on the body clock, and could open up the possibility of using exercise to help reduce the negative effects of jet lag and shift work.(这是第一项比较运动对生物钟影响的研究,并且为利用运动来帮助减少时差反应和倒班工作的负面影响开辟了可能性)”可知,Shawn认为这项研究是具有开创性的。
故选A项。
D
The idea of herd mentality, a psychological phenomenon in which people accept behaviours or ideas just because a large number of other people are doing the same, is at the heart of trend-following. The history of human development is firmly rooted in this tendency. Following the herd was frequently necessary for existence in early human cultures; going it alone may be deadly.
Cialdini, an American social psychologist created the phrase “social proof” to describe how people nowadays try to take after others’ behaviour in an effort to reflect “correct” behaviour. Nowadays, with the help of social media, we can be shaped into different versions of ourselves. Every trend turns into a chance for us to investigate or strengthen our identity. For example, the Ghibli trend — the popular style directed by the works of Studio Ghibli — encourages users to create films, filled with moody soundtracks, low-key lighting, and so on. This appeals to a particular artistic and affective mood: calm, longing, and frequently involved in a sense of simplicity.
In addition, there is a neuro-chemical (神经化学的) element. When a trend receives likes, shares, or encouraging remarks, the dopamine (多巴胺) reward mechanism in the brain promotes the behaviour. By following trends: one might gain more recognition, approval, and, in certain situations, popularity.
Trends also give rise to the fear of missing out. Being excluded from a cultural inside joke can be the same of not taking part. This appeals to a basic human drive — the psychological need for belonging. Imagine going through social media feeds where everyone posts a mix of old memories, pretty pictures, and quick likes. Not participating could seem like a social mistake. People participate because they fear being left out, not necessarily because they are interested.
On a more positive note, trends can also serve as a means of group coping. People used sourdough bread baking, viral dances, and funny challenges as coping mechanisms during the global health crisis. People felt more linked as a result of these group behaviours. With its dreamlike imagery and understated narrative, the Ghibli trend may represent a deeper need for simplicity and peace in the wake of the crisis. Thus, following trends is more than just copying; it’s creating meaning.
32. What is the origin of humans’ trend following?
A. The drive of interest. B. The need of survival. C. The fear of loneliness. D. The pursuit of identity.
33. What can we learn about the Ghibli trend?
A. It popularizes Studio Ghibli’s movies. B. It uses bright visuals and happy music.
C. It originates from social media challenges. D. It reflects a desire for simplicity and peace.
34. What’s the structure of the text?
A. B. C. D.
35. By writing the text, the author aims to ______.
A. interpret reasons behind trend-following B. persuade readers to stop following trends
C. inspire readers to create their own trends D. prove the negative side of herd mentality
【答案】32. B 33. D 34. D 35. A

My Dad, Matt, lost his job and when Christmas came, we had no money at all. On Christmas Eve, Dad took me into our yard. I was five that year and I sat next to Dad and we looked up at the sky, “Pick out your favorite star,” Dad said. He told me I could have one star for keeps. He said it was my Christmas present.
“You can’t give me a star! No one owns the stars.” “That’s right, Betty. No one else owns them. You just have to claim it before anyone else does.”
I looked up to the stars and tried to figure out which was the best one. I could see hundreds, maybe thousands or even millions, hanging in the clear sky. There was one in particular, in the west above the mountains but low in the sky, which shone more brightly than all the rest. I pointed and claimed it. Dad smiled, telling me I chose Venus. It looked bigger and brighter because it was much closer than other stars. It reflected the light of the sun. “I like it anyway,” I said. “Alright,” Dad agreed. “It’s Christmas. You can have a planet if you want.”
From then on, Venus got a new name in our family, Betty’s Planet. After Christmas, Dad found another job in the mine and he worked like mad. Gradually, we could make ends meet and there were presents under the Christmas tree and cakes when it was my birthday. But deep down, no present could match Betty’s Planet.
Years later, I entered university, majoring in engineering, but I stuck to my passion for astronomy in my spare time. In my junior year, I became the first undergraduate ever to discover an asteroid (小行星) when examining images of thousands of asteroids on my computer, due to which I was given the right to name this asteroid according to the tradition of International Astronomical Union.

This time, I decided to give Dad a present.

Dad said he owed me an apology for that Christmas.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
This time, I decided to give Dad a present. I named the asteroid “Matt’s Star” to honor him. When I told Dad about it on the phone, he fell silent for a while. Then he said, “Betty, that’s the best gift I’ve ever received.” I explained that the asteroid was small but special, just like the star he gave me years ago. I also told him that whenever he looked up at the sky, he could think of it as a symbol of our love, which would never fade.
Dad said he owed me an apology for that Christmas. “I was so poor then that I couldn’t give you a real present,” he said with a sigh. I told him that Betty’s Planet was the most precious gift because it taught me to find joy in simple things. I added that if there was no that Christmas, I might not have developed a love for astronomy, which led me to discover the asteroid. Dad laughed and said he was proud of me, and from that day on, we often talked about “our stars” on the phone.
