Things haven't always come easy for Karla Vega Cervantes.Having graduated from
high school at the height of the COVID-19 outbreak,Karla began her Berkeley journey in
2020 and, like many of her fellow first-year students, struggled with adapting to college
life. Her school term started online, and while she successfully handled her virtual
academic (experience, the change to fully in-person classes presented new
challenges.
"I felt really lonely and isolated on campus,Karla said. That's when Karla began
seeking resources to find her community. She began attending events, and through them,
she found the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)and the Undocumented Student
Program (USP).Karla credits these support systems with helping her through some of
her toughest times at Berkeley.
A highlight for Karla has been attending yield events(招生吸引话动)一the part of
the college admissions process where students have received their acceptance and are
deciding whether or not to attend."Going to yield in the spring of my junior year is when I
really felt that sense of belonging,"she said.
And despite the challenging experience at the beginning of her college journey,Karla
is set to graduate in May,2025 with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. As she
looks to the future, she is considering studying for a master's degree and applying her
chemical engineering background to the cosmetic()industry,where she can explore
creating products that are gentle on dyed hair, which she admits is one of her favorite
hobbies.
"My advice to new students is to think not only about your academics but also your
support systems on campus.Don't be scared to reach out,go to events,or build a

I grew up hearing,"Figure it out,but don't look it up.I use this advice when I'm
tempted()to turn to a search engine for answers.Should all of us limit our use of
technology?
Nicholas G.Carr, the author of The Shallows:What the Internet Is Doing to Our
Brains, says that we should take some time away from screens."Deep thinking happens
only when our minds are calm and attentive."It is difficult to focus while we are using the
Internet.People tend to look up a question and end up skimming()through unrelated
information. Some people might not even notice when they start mindlessly clicking.
David Price,a guest blogger on a website, says that teaching may be getting easier
with Google because parents can now use the Internet to help with their kids'homework.
This led me to think about our schooldays. When my class had a math test, most of us
used calculators()at every chance even though everyone in that room was able to
solve each problem without them. It's similar to the Internet;we know the answers to
many questions we search for.We need to at least attempt to use our minds for problem-
solving,or we risk losing the ability to do so.If we always turn to technology for
answers,we'll never learn anything on our own.
高一英语试题(共12页)第5页
Actually, the problems with technology arise only when it is used in a certain way,but it's
not the solution to every problem. The positives of technology don't remove the negatives. It's
time to take a step back from technology and take a break from our reliance on it.
24.What may happen when using the Internet according to paragraph 2?
A.We'll find it hard to think deeply.

D.We'll become less eager to solve problems.

A.It requires thoughtful and balanced application.
B.It should be developed with combined efforts.
C.It should encourage more human creativity.
D.It needs greater availability to serve people.
C
If you're offered a-free cookie, you might say yes.But if you're paid to eat a free
cookie, would your response be the same? You might politely refuse and walk away
thinking,"Something smells fishy."In a new study, researchers found that people tend to
turn down offers of“free money”because they seem“too good to be true'”.
In the initial experiment, nearly 40 percent of participants ate a cookie offered
freely-compared with about 20 percent of those offered an additional $2."People.
typically infer hidden costs from overly generous offers. In this case, the participants may
think the cookies were poisoned,"says study lead author Andrew J.Vonasch.Further
experiments, involving more than 4,000 participants, used online questionnaires to present
common everyday scenes. In each case, past a certain threshold value ()higher
potential monetary gain at no cost reduced participants'likelihood of accepting the offer.
Vonasch says the study illustrates that, against the "standard economic model",
which supposes humans always seek to maximize gains, deals need to be understood as
social interactions between people trying to read each other's minds. If someone seems to
go against accepted norms without a solid reason,we assume they have hidden purposes
and infer there will be“phantom costs(幻影成本)”.
高一英语试题(共12页)第6页
The researchers also showed how to weaken phantom costs'effect. In one
experiment, participants were given three plane tickets for the same flight, respectively
costing $235,$275,and $205.Most people chose the 205 ticket.However,if the
third option was $15,hardly anyone chose the cheapest one. They rejected it because
they imagined horrible phantom costs. However, when the researchers accounted for the
incredibly cheap offer-very uncomfortable seats-most participants preferred the $15
flight.
The scientists are also about to experiment with human and artificial intelligence
interactions."Will people act the same way when AI is overly generous to them?"
Vonasch says."AI is always programmed to appear more human-like and people tend to
treat AI agents as if they have a mind, when obviously they don't."
27.What does the underlined part "smells fishy"in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Is worth studying.
B.Is hard to realize.
C.Seems untrustworthy.
D.Sounds very appealing.
28.Which of the following options will participants most possibly refuse?
A.A travel package with a 50%discount.
B.Being offered cash for taking a lift home.
C.A $100 reward for returning one's lost phone.
D.Being given a prize for accepting an interview.
29.What insight can businesses gain from the"cheap flight"experiment?
A.Keep prices as low as possible
B.Offer customers a variety of options.
C.Give explanations for overgenerous offers.
D.Adjust pricing following competitors.
30.What will the researchers investigate in further studies?
A.How AI's responses impact humans'expectations.
B.How AI can be programmed to be more human-like.
C.Whether AI can give humans overly generous offers.
D.Whether we assume phantom costs in human-AI interactions.
