2025 is the Year of the Snake in the Chinese zodiac (生肖), starting from January 29th, 2025, and ending on February 16th, 2026.
In Chinese culture, the snake is connected with wisdom, beauty, and independence. People born in the Year of the Snake are believed to be very intelligent. There is a legend about a race held by the Jade Emperor to select the zodiac animals. The snake, being not a good swimmer, wrapped itself around the foot of a horse. When the horse was near the finish line, the snake slid down and rushed across, getting its place in the zodiac.
In Chinese history, snakes have also been a symbol of rebirth and a deep connection between humans and gods. When people saw snakes digging into the underground, they believed that these animals could connect humans, the dead and the gods. Images of humans with snake bodies were then created, showing the ability to cross between life and death. Due to their ability to shed skin (蜕皮), snakes were also connected with rebirth.
However, in Western cultures, the idea of snakes is different. In Greek mythology (神话), the snake guarding the golden apples represents wisdom and protection. But in the Bible, the snake that cheated Eve into eating the forbidden fruit symbolizes dishonesty and original sin (罪恶). Therefore, in English, we always say we should be careful not to make friends with “a snake in the grass”.
Whether in the East or the West, the snake has left a deep mark on cultural traditions. The Year of the Snake not only serves as a time for celebration in China but also offers a window to explore the rich and different cultural meanings connected with this mysterious creature.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is part of our everyday life. It makes our smart devices work. You might already be using an AI program in school. But advanced chatbots, like ChatGPT, are new. They’re called generative (生成的) AI. Ask a chatbot a question, and it will create an answer. Some educators worry that chatbots could prevent students from learning on their own. Should students use AI to do their school homework? Here are two students’ different answers.
YES
Teaching kids how to use AI can prepare them for our technology-filled future. Using AI can help kids build the critical thinking (批判思维) and problem-solving skills. And it’s better that students learn about AI’s limitations now: its biases (偏见), its potential (可能性) to spread misinformation, and the ways it could be misused. I believe that as long as it’s done well, teaching AI in schools will change society for the better. Either you move with the times, or the times will move without you!
—Alexa, 11, Seattle
NO
Though generative AI will be popularly used in the future, we shouldn’t introduce it into schools for a few reasons. First, chatbots and other AI programs are getting more and more advanced every day. Teachers might not know how to best integrate (使融合) them into their classes. Second, think of the cost to schools. Many wouldn’t be able to afford the latest technology, and that’s not fair to students. And most of all, AI lacks the humanity and emotion that kids get from a teacher. That human connection is important. A chatbot just feeds students information. But teachers know how to help students keep information.
—Ninis Twumasi, 12, New York
27. According to Alexa, what is NOT the limitation of AI?
A. AI’s biases. B. Build the critical thinking.
C. The ways AI could be misused. D. AI’s potential to spread misinformation.
28. What does the underlined sentence aim to tell us?
A. Students should be allowed to use AI technology.
B. Students who don’t use AI have trouble succeeding.
C. AI will become less and less important in the future.
D. Don’t move with the times, and don’t follow the AI technology.
29. How does Ninis Twumasi feel about AI technology?
A. AI lacks the humanity and emotion.
B. Everyone can use the latest technology.
C. Teachers know how to integrate AI into classes.
D. AI knows how to help students keep information.
30. What is the statement Alexa and Ninis both agreed about AI?
A. AI can help students solve problems.
B. Schools cannot afford the cost of the latest technology.
C. In the future, generative AI will be used more and more popularly.
D. Teachers can easily use chatbots and other AI programmes in classes.

六、阅读表达(共5小题,满分10分)
阅读下面的短文,回答短文后面的各个小题。
Do you often feel tired in class? Do you find it hard to focus on your homework? Maybe you aren’t getting enough sleep. Sleep is like food for the brain—it helps us stay healthy, think clearly, and even do better at school. Let’s learn why sleep matters and how to get more of it.
How Much Sleep Do We Need?
According to the National Sleep Foundation, teenagers (ages 13-18) need 8-10 hours of sleep each night. However, many students only get 6-7 hours, especially when they have exams or lots of homework. Lack of sleep can affect our memory, mood, and even our physical health. Studies show that sleep-deprived students are more likely to get sick and have trouble paying attention in class.
What Happens When We Don’t Sleep Enough?
When we sleep, our bodies and brains repair themselves. Without enough sleep:
Our brain doesn’t work well: It’s harder to remember things or solve problems.
We feel angry or sad more easily: Sleep helps regulate our emotions.
Our immune system is weaker: We become more vulnerable to colds and flu.
We may gain weight: Lack of sleep can change the hormones that control hunger, making us eat more.
Why Is It Hard for Teens to Sleep?
Many teenagers have trouble falling asleep early. This is partly because their body clocks naturally shift later during puberty, making them feel awake at night. Also, using phones, tablets, or computers before bed can make sleep worse. The blue light from screens tricks the brain into thinking it’s daytime, making it harder to fall asleep. Some students also stay up late studying or chatting with friends, which breaks their sleep routine.
Tips for Better Sleep
1. Stick to a schedule: Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends.
2. Turn off screens an hour before bed: Try reading a book or listening to calm music instead.
3. Create a good sleep environment: Keep your room dark, quiet, and cool (around 65°F/ 18°C).
4. Avoid heavy meals and caffeine at night: Don’t eat too much or drink soda/ coffee before bedtime.
5. Limit naps: Long naps during the day can make it harder to sleep at night.

Learning to build good relationships with parents
Building a harmonious relationship with parents is essential for a happy family life. In my opinion, it requires mutual understanding and open communication.
Once, when I argued with my parents about my study schedule, we sat down and had a heart-to-heart talk, which helped us understand each other better. They realized that I needed more flexibility, and I understood their concerns about my academic performance.
From this experience, I learned that listening and expressing our feelings honestly can resolve conflicts. I believe that mutual understanding and open communication are the keys to maintaining a strong bond with parents.
