Walking around the Rahway Trail in the South Mountain Reservation of Millburn, New Jersey, you might spot more than trees and flowers. “Fairies (仙子)” live there. Small fantastic cottages are hidden in the trees, which is a surprisingly sweet sight in an otherwise normal-looking forest.
The fairy homes were not built by mythical creatures, but by volunteers. The idea to add small houses to the landscape came from Therese Ojibway, who 10 years ago wanted her son with autism (自闭症) to have a safe space to explore in the wilderness.
“Finding this Rahway Trail, she started leaving fairy things here and there. When they came, he had something they could look for and over time she kept filling it up more,” said Julie Gould, one of the trail keepers.
The South Mountain Conservancy (管理机构) noticed the little cottages popping up around the forest. Learning Ojibway was hand-making the little fairy fixtures, they decided to allow her to continue building the Fairy Trail. “She thought this was a dynamic way of getting little children into nature, enhancing their imagination and creativity,” said Beth Kelly, another trail keeper.
Ojibway and her son moved out of the area, but their fairy trail legacy lives on. Gould and Kelly were officially asked to become the makers and keepers of the trail. The women, along with volunteers, continue building little wooden homes for the trail.
Visitors of the Fairy Trail can spend hours looking for the nearly 100 tiny homes in the woods, but unfortunately, they cannot see fairies. “This is a magical feeling when you come here. It touches your heart, giving you a sense of wonder, imagination, and bonding with nature.” Kelly said. “We get paid when interacting with the hearts of the children who come here and it made their day. This is a magical place for them.”

A biologist from the University of Arkansas participates in an international research team that is creating a volunteer network consisting of citizen scientists to help monitor the population of dragonflies (蜻蜓) and damselflies (豆娘).
Recent studies have indicated that insect species in general are declining throughout the world and could be headed toward collapse due to intensive agricultural practices, climate change and habitat loss. For many species, however, there isn’t enough baseline data to determine trends in insect population.
Adam Siepielski, associate professor of biology, is part of the team working on a solution — establishing a volunteer network that will collect data on odonata, the scientific name for dragonflies and damselflies. Odonata are easy to spot, often vividly colored and an important indicator group of species reflecting environmental changes in freshwater biodiversity.
“Volunteer nature enthusiasts can greatly help to monitor the population of dragonflies and damselflies,” the scientists wrote in a paper published in the journal BioScience. The researchers propose modeling the volunteer network on a similar collection of projects, organizations and individuals dedicated to butterflies. “The network has improved knowledge of not only butterfly geographical distributions but also their relative population sizes across years and the effects of large-scale environmental change,” the researchers wrote.
“We are hopeful that with similar efforts dedicated to odonata, great progress can be made in our understanding of changes in their population and distributions too. They really are amazing animals and fascinating to observe,” said Siepielski.
An odonata network would fill in gaps from areas of the world with little information, and incorporate existing data-collection efforts. Ideally, volunteers would collect data at a fixed location for 10 to 15 years, and have a standardized portal (门户) to report their findings.
“An army of amateur naturalists may contribute far more data than a small number of professional observers,” the researchers wrote. “Citizen scientists promote the love for nature while contributing enormously to understanding large-scale biodiversity loss and environmental change, especially in developing regions.”
8. What role can citizen scientists play according to the text?
A. Studying climate change.
B. Improving agricultural practices.
C. Changing freshwater biodiversity.
D. Collecting insect population data.
9. Why is the butterfly-related research mentioned in the text?
A. To compare insect species.
B. To show a successful model.
C. To introduce a new method.
D. To explain the decline in species.
10. What does the last paragraph stress?
A. The contribution of professional observers.
B. The challenges of data collection.
C. The impact of environmental change.
D. The importance of citizen scientists.
11. What may be the best title for the text?
A. The Population of Insect Species
B. The Threat of Dragonfly Decline
C. Monitoring Odonata with Volunteers
D. Environmental Changes and Biodiversity
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. D 11. C

When Hurricane Helene struck stern North Carolina in September, it caused destructive power outages, leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity. However, the small town of Hot Springs managed to restore power to critical facilities within just five days. This remarkable action was possible due to a microgrid (微电网) installed (安装) by a local company two years earlier.
Microgrids are small-scale, self-contained power systems that can operate independently of the main grid. They have gained attention as a solution to enhancing energy resilience, especially after major hurricanes like Sandy and Maria caused long-lasting power outages. According to Jenny Brennan, a climate analyst, reliable energy is essential not only for keeping the lights on but also for powering medical equipment and ensuring public safety.
The U.S. power grid, which relies on centralized power plants and long transmission lines, faces significant vulnerabilities. Aging infrastructure, combined with increasing extreme weather events, has led to a rise in weather-related outages. From 2014 to 2023, the number of weather-related outages doubled compared to the previous decade. Major upgrades to the grid are necessary but can be expensive and slow to implement. In contrast, microgrids offer a quicker, localized solution that can protect critical services during emergencies.
Other communities have also benefited from microgrids. Babcock Ranch in Florida, designed with climate resilience in mind, withstood back-to-back hurricanes thanks to its onsite solar farm and underground distribution system. Blue Lake Rancheria in California used a solar and battery storage microgrid to avoid outages during wildfires and planned power shutoffs.
However, microgrids are not without challenges. They can be costly, and in some areas, solar energy alone may not be enough. This means that diesel (柴油) generators may need to be used as well. Studies show that microgrids are often worth the investment, especially as renewable technology gets cheaper.
While microgrids are not a universal solution for every community, they are a valuable tool in enhancing energy resilience. As climate threats increase, localized power systems like microgrids can play a significant role in ensuring critical services remain operational during crises.
12. Why did Hot Springs restore power quickly after Hurricane Helene?
A. It suffered a little damage.
B. It had a microgrid installed.
C. It had some critical facilities.
D. It was rescued by a company.
13. What does the underlined word “vulnerabilities” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Weaknesses. B. Features.
C. Innovations. D. Regulations.
14. What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 4?
A. To compare hurricane impacts.
B. To prove microgrids’ effectiveness.
C. To introduce a solar farm project.
D. To criticize traditional power systems.
15. What can be inferred about microgrids from the text?
A. They rely on diesel generators.
B. Their installation is extremely easy.
C. Their value increases with technology.
D. They are relatively inexpensive solutions.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. B 15. C

Thirty years ago, Jaxon sat on the edge of his bed, staring at the few coins in his hand, thirty-seven cents. That was all he had. His best friend, Leo, who liked writing very much, would be moving away. The thought made Jaxon’s heart ache. They had been inseparable since childhood, sharing secrets, laughter, and dreams. Now, Leo’s family had to move due to his father’s job, and there was nothing Jaxon could do to change that. He wanted to give Leo a gift.
Jaxon’s family didn’t have much money. Every penny counted, and even with months of saving, he still had barely enough to buy a pack of sweets. Leo’s family was well-off, and Jaxon knew that anything he could afford would seem insignificant compared to the expensive gifts Leo was used to receiving.
Jaxon’s eyes wandered to the window where a sparrow was resting. He sighed and looked around his small room. There wasn’t much there. After thinking for minutes, he came up with an idea; He could collect and sell empty water bottles. It wasn’t much, but every penny he could find would help. In that way, he would be able to give Leo something special.
Over the next few weeks, Jaxon picked up discarded water bottles from the parks and the streets, saving them in a large bag under his bed. He had hoped to sell them for a few dollars. Jaxon’s hands and shoes were often dirty because of his daily searches, but he didn’t mind. He was determined to give Leo a proper goodbye gift.
The day before Leo was to leave, Jaxon put on his coat and headed to the local recycling center. When he arrived, he handed over his bag of bottles to the worker. “Good job, kid,” the worker said, counting the bottles. He smiled at Jaxon and said, “You’ve got a total of 60 bottles here. That’s six dollars.” “Thank you,” Jaxon replied, feeling a small sense of accomplishment. He left the recycling center with six dollars and thirty-seven cents in his pocket.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
With the money in hand, Jaxon hurried to the gift shop.

The next day, Jaxon went to say goodbye to Leo.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
With the money in hand, Jaxon hurried to the gift shop. He scanned the shelves, hoping to find something that would show Leo how much he cared. As he walked around, he noticed a small, beautifully carved wooden bird. It reminded him of the sparrow he had seen in his window that day. “This is perfect,” he thought. The shopkeeper, seeing his interest, said, “That bird is special; it’s said to bring good luck to those who receive it as a gift.” Jaxon knew this was the one Leo would cherish.
The next day, Jaxon went to say goodbye to Leo. When Leo saw the gift, his eyes lit up. “This is amazing, Jaxon!” he exclaimed. Jaxon smiled, feeling happy that his hard work had paid off. As they hugged, Leo whispered, “No matter where I go, our friendship, which is more precious than any gift, will always stay with me.” Jaxon nodded, knowing that the memories they shared would last a lifetime, even though Leo was moving away.

4. Which of the following best describes the initial state of the trail?
A. A typical forest scene.
B. A playground for kids.
C. A well-known tourist spot.
D A magical adventure land.
5. What was the conservancy’s attitude to Ojibway’s construction of the trail?
A. Opposed. B. Indifferent.
C. Uncertain. D. Supportive.
6. What can we know about the trail after Ojibway moved out?
A. It has been abandoned. B. It continues to develop.
C. It is governed by Gould. D. It becomes a volunteer base.
7. How does the trail influence the visitors according to the text?
A. It helps them learn building skills.
B. It offers them a way to escape reality.
C. It enriches their emotional experiences.
D. It satisfies their curiosity about fairy tales.

A Studying climate change.
B. Improving agricultural practices.
C. Changing freshwater biodiversity.
D. Collecting insect population data.
9. Why is the butterfly-related research mentioned in the text?

Babcock Ranch in Florida designed with climate resilience in mind, withstood back-to-back hurricanes thanks to its onsite solar farm and underground distribution system.

Jaxon’s eyes wandered to the window, where a sparrow was resting.
