An English woman has found her calling and recycled more than 2000 pounds of trash after setting up a drop-off point in her garden for people to leave items that garbagemen don’t collect.
Liz Pinfield-Wells built the DIY recycling center following the birth of her third child after she learned she couldn’t recycle his baby food pouches (袋子) . Along with the pouches, certain food packaging, and even toothbrushes were all excluded (排除) from her town’s curbside (路边的) recycling service.
Inspired to take action, she set up a drop-off point at the end of her driveway and encouraged the public to leave their mixed recycled items. Since starting her green project four years ago, Liz has recycled 2,600 pounds of trash split (分) between 30 different categories of recyclable waste that’s not taken by trash collection and raised thousands for her local community in the process.
Every month, she sends off the trash to TerraCycle, a firm that makes it into other items such as watering cans and benches. The weight of the junk is then converted (转变) into points for money which can be paid out twice a year to a charity or sports organization of her choice. In the last three years, Liz has raised more than £1,000, which she has donated to her 14-year-old daughter Zoe’s gymnastic group to buy new equipment. She has also donated a sum of money to another local charity to buy woodchips for their community garden.
“It can sometimes seem a little intimidating choosing where to start with recycling but with every small step, it gets that little bit easier” she said. “I definitely think it has helped to raise awareness among my children about the need to recycle more too.”
4. What inspired Liz to set up a recycling center?
A. Her child’s request.
B. Her neighbors’ proposals.
C. Her experience of working on a green project.
D. Her learning of some trash being unrecyclable.
5. What did Liz do with the trash?
A. She turned it into other items.
B. She left it to the local garbagemen.
C. She sold it and donated the money to her local community.

根据第二段“Liz Pinfield-Wells built the DIY recycling center following the birth of her third child after she learned she couldn’t recycle his baby food pouches (袋子) . Along with the pouches, certain food packaging, and even toothbrushes were all excluded (排除) from her town’s curbside (路边的) recycling service. (莉兹・平菲尔德 - 威尔斯在第三个孩子出生后,得知无法回收他的婴儿食品袋,于是建立了这个DIY回收中心。除了这些袋子,某些食品包装,甚至牙刷都被排除在镇上的路边回收服务之外。)”可知,莉兹因了解到一些垃圾无法被回收而建立了回收中心。故选D项。
【5题详解】

The weight of the junk is then converted (转变) into points for money which can be paid out twice a year to a charity or sports organization of her choice. In the last three years, Liz has raised more than £1,000, which she has donated to her 14-year-old daughter Zoe’s gymnastic group to buy new equipment. She has also donated a sum of money to another local charity to buy woodchips for their community garden.

A good shower can relax not only your body but also your mind, unleashing (释放) streams of consciousness (意识流) and creativity.
Research shows that what is known as the “shower effect” also can occur outside the shower, and many of our best thoughts don’t happen at work or school — but occur while going about our days with ideas incubating (酝酿) in the background.
In a study, 98 professional writers and 87 physicists recorded their most creative ideas each day, as well as what they were doing and thinking when it struck them. While most of the ideas occurred at work, 20 percent of their most meaningful ideas came while doing something else—washing dishes or taking a shower. Notably, the ideas the writers and physicists had away from their jobs were self-assessed to be just as creative and important as the ones they had at work.
However, the shower effect on creativity is the product of mind-wandering, where your thoughts are anywhere but on the task at hand. Historically, researchers focused on the negative effects of mind-wandering, which can disrupt (扰乱) performance and have been associated with unhappiness. But the nature of the mind-wandering matters.
In another study, over 300 university students were first asked to come up with as many novel uses as possible for ordinary objects such as a brick or paper clip (曲别针) in 90 seconds. This is known as an alternative use task, which tests creativity. The students then watched a boring video. The activity gave time for the students’ ideas to incubate and for their minds to wander. When the students were tested again, their mind-wandering led to more creative ideas.
An activity such as taking a shower or a walk (or watching a romantic comedy video) “takes some of your attention so that they can influence your thoughts, but doesn’t take all of it so that you pay no attention to these creative ideas that are incubating in the background.” said Zachary Irving, author of the study.
12. What do we know about the shower effect?
A. It requires focused attention.
B. It fails to work outside the shower.
C. It enables people to have innovative ideas unconsciously.
D. It is the main cause of people’s poor performance at work.
13. How did the researchers conduct the study among writers and physicists?
A. They assessed their ideas at work.
B. They asked them to record their creative ideas.
C. They tested their creativity after they took a shower.
D. They required them to use an ordinary object creatively.
14. What does the study among university students show?
A. Mind-wandering can disrupt performance.
B. People’s thoughts are anywhere but on the task at hand.
C. Free-flowing thoughts in moderate task boost creativity.
D. Mind-wandering has been associated with unhappiness.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Why does the mind wander?
B. Why do we get our best ideas in the shower?
C. How can you become a more creative person?
D. How may your shower routine affect your health?
C 13. B 14. C 15. B

根据第三段“In a study, 98 professional writers and 87 physicists recorded their most creative ideas each day, as well as what they were doing and thinking when it struck them. (在一项研究中,98位专业作家和87位物理学家每天记录他们最有创意的想法,以及这些想法出现时他们正在做什么和想什么)”可知,研究人员通过让作家和物理学家记录他们的创意想法来进行研究。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“In another study, over 300 university students were first asked to come up with as many novel uses as possible for ordinary objects such as a brick or paper clip (曲别针) in 90 seconds. This is known as an alternative use task, which tests creativity. The students then watched a boring video. The activity gave time for the students’ ideas to incubate and for their minds to wander. When the students were tested again, their mind-wandering led to more creative ideas.
通读全文,结合第一段“A good shower can relax not only your body but also your mind, unleashing (释放) streams of consciousness (意识流) and creativity.(一场畅快的淋浴不仅能放松你的身体,还能放松你的大脑,释放意识流和创造力)”、第二段“Research shows that what is known as the “shower effect” also can occur outside the shower, and many of our best thoughts don’t happen at work or school — but occur while going about our days with ideas incubating (酝酿) in the background. (研究表明,所谓的“淋浴效应”也可以在淋浴之外出现,我们许多最好的想法不是在工作或学习时产生的,而是在我们度过日常生活时,想法在潜意识中酝酿时产生的)”以及后文对相关研究的介绍,可知文章主要围绕为什么人们在淋浴等日常活动中能产生最好的想法展开,解释了“淋浴效应”。故B项“Why do we get our best ideas in the shower? (为什么我们在淋浴时能产生最好的想法?)”能概括文章内容,最适合做文章标题。故选B项。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
An A for Mrs. Bartlett
I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth-grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new project. In groups we were to create a poster around what we were studying.
On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. Bartlett informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us know the results the next day. I was a well-rounded top student in the class, so I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. There were only a handful of sociably decent people in the class, and Missy was one of them. I knew we had chosen each other.
The next day, I anxiously awaited the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs. Bartlett called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy’s name was called. So I’m in group three, I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included. There had to be some mistake!
Then I heard it. The last group: “ Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina. ” I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group — the boy who barely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who was often wearing very strange and unusual clothes with fancy items. They certainly fell into the category of the least popular in our class. They were considered misfits
There must be something wrong! Mrs. Bartlett was such a person of insight, vision and thoughtfulness that she never forgot to bring out the potential of all her students. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends. Finally I was determined to convince her I should be in the “ good ” group.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Halfway through the week, I felt myself enjoying the company of these three misfits.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph l:
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett. Before I opened my mouth, she gently placed a hand on my shoulder, saying with a knowing smile, “ I know what you want, but your group needs you. ” So stunned was I that I couldn’t utter a single word for a moment. She had seen something in me that I hadn’t seen. Suddenly, a mixture of guilt as well as pride seized me. The power of being trusted made me stand straighter. “ I’ll help them. ” I replied in a firm voice. I couldn’t believe it came out of my mouth, but it did.
Paragraph 2:
Halfway through the week, I felt myself enjoying the company of these three misfits. The project was going smoothly with our joint efforts. Besides, I found out Mauro was struggling with English, Juliette wore long skirts because of her religion and Rachel dreamed to be a fashion designer. They weren’t misfits, just people that no one cared enough about to try to understand — except Mrs. Bartlett. I was lucky to be given a chance to see other people in a new light. Mrs. Bartlett gave us an A on that assignment, which should be handed back, for she was the one who truly deserved it.

A group of digital models dressed in sports outfits strutted down the runway in an online virtual fashion show during China Fashion Week in September. Led by Xijiajia, tech company Baidu Inc’s virtual spokesperson, they presented the latest clothes by homegrown sportswear maker Anta Sports in different virtual scenarios (场景)-stadiums, snowfields, the Gobi Desert and even outer space.
Li Shiyan, head of Baidu’s digital human and robotics section, said that technologies, the production cost of virtual clothing has been reduced dramatically, and production periods shortened from more than one month to just a week.
“The virtual human industry is still in an early stage, and there are some challenges, such as how to produce low-cost digital assets and digital content, and how to make digital humans interact with real people more naturally, “Li said.
The size of China’s virtual human market is forecast to reach 270 billion yuan by 2030. According to experts, the fashion landscape is rapidly expanding its virtual horizon to prepare for a future populated by digital avatars, and the most accessible way for fashion brands to engage with virtual replicas is by dressing them in their latest collections.
“Holding virtual fashion shows doesn’t just mean moving real-world shows online. More importantly, we can use digital space to expand our understanding of fashion and imagination for what is possible,“ said Chen Duan. For example, people can make use of textures that do not exist in the physical world, and digital humans are able to go beyond the biological limits of real humans and present new fashion styles in new ways.
“Digital humans are increasingly being used in brand promotion, advertisement, livestreaming, gaming and entertainment,” said Zhu Xiaowen, an analyst. However, she added that a new set of problems have also emerged, such as personal privacy protection and data security. She said unregulated use of digital humans might open a way for fraud, given that digital humans can be difficult to distinguish from real people.

A. to stress Baidu’s technological development.
B. to introduce the use of digital fashion avatars.
C. to make ads for sportswear maker Anta Sports.

13 How did the researchers conduct the study among writers and physicists?

An A for Mrs. Bartlett
I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth-grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new project. In groups, we were to create a poster around what we were studying.
