Every Time You Hear That Song Inspired by Dolly Parton’s real-life time capsule(胶囊) which sits in Dollywood, waiting to be opened on Dolly’s 100th birthday, Every Time You Hear That Song is written by Jenna Voris from two points of view. The first is that of 17-year-old Darren Purchase, a journalist from the small town of Mayberry, Arkansas, who wants to unearth the story behind country music legend Decklee Cassel’s empty time capsule. The second is that of Decklee Cassel in the 1960s, coming up in the music world, and what she had to give up to succeed. Snowglobe In Soyoung Park’s award-winning novel, all is not what it seems in Snowglobe — the sunny, green, celebrity-filled city and the last place on earth that isn’t frozen. Residents of the frozen world (the result of the climate crisis) work hard to keep Snowglobe warm. This book is translated from the original Korean. Gita Desai Is Not Here to Shut Up Gita Desai Is Not Here to Shut Up written by Sonia Patel is considered as a tough read that’s worth the discomfort. In it, 18-year-old Gita Desai, a freshman at Stanford, dreams of being a doctor but is pulled off her path by a series of situations that unearth an awful secret from her past. It is based on the author’s own experiences. 1. Who wrote Everything We Never Had? A. Sonia Patel. B. Randy Ribay. C. Soyoung Park. D. Jenna Voris. 2. What is Decklee Cassel? A. A musician. B. A novelist. C. A student. D. A journalist. 3. What is a feature of Gita Desai Is Not Here to Shut Up? A. It is written from two points of view. B. It tells stories of Filipino American boys. C It is translated from the original Korean. D. It is based on the author’s own experiences. B People usually wash their produce before eating to remove residue (残留) from pesticides. But are your fruits and vegetables really clean enough to eat? 14-year-old Sirish Subash from Georgia has won the 2024 3M Young Scientist Challenge for inventing an AI-based handheld pesticide detector called PestiSCAND that is very accurate in detecting pesticide residue. Now in its 17th year, the Challenge supports middle school students to think creatively and apply STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) principles to discover real-world solutions. When the finalists are chosen, they are paired with a 3M scientist who guides them over the summer to help turn their ideas from just concepts to prototypes (雏形). Sirish spent four months competing against nine other finalists and secured his win at the final challenge events at 3M’s global headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota that were held on October 14 and 15, 2024. The finalists had to traverse a series of interactive challenges and were evaluated on their innovation, application of STEM, as well as their ability to inspire others. Sirish’s journey to winning the award came from watching his mother washing vegetables and fruits and reminding him to always do so. He wondered whether washing actually made a difference. Since 70 percent of the produce in the US has pesticide residue that is linked to illnesses like cancer, it’s very important to know if the fruits and vegetables are safe to eat. That’s what PestiSCAND is designed to do. The device works by shining light on the surface of the produce and measuring the wavelengths that bounce (反射) back. Sirish tested the device on more than 12,000 foods including strawberries, apples and tomatoes. PestiSCAND uses a sensor and AI-based processor to achieve an accuracy of over 85 percent. Sirish aims at making this technology widely accessible so that consumers will be able to make safe food choices. But he still believes you should wash your produce anyway. 4. What is the function of PestiSCAND? A. To treat cancer. B. To clean vegetables. C. To detect pesticide residue. D. To promote the growth of fruits. 5. What does the underlined word “traverse” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Note down. B. Give up. C. Miss out. D. Get through. 6. What can we learn from the text? A. Sirish put a lot of effort into his invention. B. PestiSCAND came on the market last year. C. Sirish’s mother was strict about his education. D. The 3M scientists mustn’t provide help for the finalists. 7. What does Sirish suggest people do? A. Order a piece of PestiSCAND. B. Wash produce before eating it. C. Buy fresh produce as often as possible. D. Enter as many competitions as they can. C Older trees have a major role to play in the fight against climate change, according to a recent study from the UK. Researchers at the University of Birmingham have found that older trees respond to increased levels of carbon dioxide(CO2)in the atmosphere by absorbing more of it with increased wood production. Previously, it was thought that only younger trees could do this. The scientists studied data from an experiment run by the University of Birmingham’s Institute of Forest Research(BIFoR)in a forest in central England. This forest mainly consists of oak trees that are over 180 years old. To understand the impact of the changing climate on trees, scientists put a network of pipes(管道)in the forest that fed the area a stream of CO2. This created a local atmosphere of increased CO2— something we might see everywhere if nothing is done to reduce global emissions(排放). After seven years of running the experiment, it was found that, in response to a 40% increase in CO2 levels, the trees had increased their production of wood by nearly 10%. Trees change CO2 into oxygen, which they emit into the air, and carbon, which is used to produce wood, leaves and roots. Leaves and roots can die quite quickly, and when they do, they emit CO2 back into the atmosphere. Wood, however, acts as a long-term carbon store. So when the BIFoR trees made more wood, they were keeping CO2 out of the atmosphere for many years to come, and stopping it from warming our atmosphere. Rob MacKenzie, the director of BIFoR and one of the authors of the study, described the findings as“hopeful and positive”, and said we should carefully manage older forests. “The old forest is doing a huge amount of work for us,” he added. “What we definitely should not be doing is cutting it down.” 8. Where was the experiment conducted? A. In a forest in central England. B. In an urban park. C. In a forest in western England. D. In a laboratory in Birmingham. 9. What is the purpose of setting up a network of pipes? A. To keep the trees warm. B. To provide people with gas. C. To transport large amounts of CO2. D. To store as much oxygen as possible. 10. Which of the following is Rob MacKenzie’s idea according to the last paragraph? A. It is unavoidable to emit CO2. B. People should plant more trees. C. People should value old forests. D. CO2 is necessary to the environment. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. The Role of Younger Trees in Climate Change. B. The Importance of Reducing Global CO2 Emissions. C. Climate Change Impacts on Humans Are Increasing. D. Older Trees Can Help Fight Against Climate Change. D When a team of local rangers (护林员) and scientists arrived at the billabong, a lake that is formed when a river floods, in Australia’s Northern Territory, they knew the clock was ticking. It was September 2024, and the hot dry season meant disappearing water, which would trap the young freshwater sawfish within days. After catching the young sawfish by hand and with nets, the scientists, including Peter Kyne, noted each sawfish’s sex, placing a microchip (微芯片) under their skin, while rangers poured water on the animals to keep them wet. Over two days, the team put 19 rescued sawfish into a water tank and drove them a short distance to the Daly River, freeing them into the dark depths. The freshwater sawfish is a type of large Australian ray (鳐鱼) with sharp teeth that can cut through other fish. The 21-foot-long rays spend their long lives in fresh and sea water, with females giving birth to an average of seven babies annually in Northern Territory rivers. Young sawfish mature in fresh water for about a decade before returning to the ocean. Sawfish was once found in oceans worldwide. However, a combination of habitat loss and overfishing has reduced the large-toothed sawfish’s range by an estimated 60 percent between roughly 2000 and 2010. The four other sawfish species are also critically endangered, and their ranges have decreased by up to 80 percent. Since 2012, the rangers have partnered with university scientists to look for and relocate sawfish in remote floodplains. Since then, the team has relocated 115 fish back into the Daly River. Now, there’s a new concern for sawfish in the Northern Territory — cotton farming. Industrial farming stations, some double the size of London, have been built across the region, and more than 120,000 acres of cotton farms will likely be planted within the next few years. On average, cotton requires almost two Olympic-size swimming pools of water per acre. To meet this demand, agriculturists are pushing to harvest water from the Daly River and its surrounding floodplains. 12. What did the scientists do first after they caught the young freshwater sawfish? A. They poured water on them. B. They kept a record of their sexes. C. They put microchips in their mouths. D. They put them directly into the ocean. 13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The introduction of a fish. B. The benefit of cotton farming. C. The history of industrial farming. D. The description of the Daly River. 14. How many sawfish species are critically endangered according to the text? A. Six. B. Five. C. Four. D. Three. 15. What can be inferred about sawfish from the text? A. They will soon disappear completely. B. Their population is increasing rapidly. C. They are only affected by overfishing. D. Their survival is facing several threats. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Having a healthy level of self-confidence can help you become more successful in your personal and professional life. The latest must-have item? Superhero-style jerseys (球衣). Almost everyone bought one, except Dylan. Dylan lived with his grandmother, Mrs. Hargrove, in a little house. Money was tight, but they made do. When Dylan saw the jerseys at school, he couldn’t help but want one. “Grandma, everyone’s getting a superhero jersey,” he said one afternoon. “Can I get one, too?” Mrs. Hargrove looked at the price online. “Dylan, those jerseys are awfully expensive,” she said gently. “I’m afraid we can’t afford one right now.” Dylan’s face fell, but he forced a smile. “That’s okay, Grandma. I understand.” But Mrs. Hargrove couldn’t bear to see him disappointed. That night, after Dylan had gone to bed, she sat down with a plan. She stayed up all night, her fingers moving quickly as she made a jersey with all the love she had. By morning, she was exhausted but satisfied, holding up the finished product with a smile. At breakfast, she presented the jersey to Dylan. Dylan’s heart sank when he saw the jersey. It wasn’t at all like the store-bought ones. But he saw the look in his grandmother’s eyes and knew he couldn’t hurt her feelings. “Thanks, Grandma,” he said, forcing enthusiasm into his voice. “It’s great.” So, on Monday, Dylan put on the homemade jersey and walked to school, hoping no one would notice. But as soon as he entered the classroom, the snickers (偷笑) started. “Nice sweater, Dylan. Did your grandma make it?” one kid said. “Yeah, it’s unique,” another added, beginning to laugh. Dylan tried to ignore them, but the comments kept coming. By lunchtime, he couldn’t take it anymore. He ran home, tears streaming down his face. He burst through the door and into his grandmother’s arms. Meanwhile, Mr. Pickford, their beloved teacher, heard about what had happened. He was known for his kindness and his ability for turning bad situations around. C To detect pesticide residue. 【答案】4. C 5. D 6. A 7. 【答案】8. A 9. C 10. C 11. 【答案】12. B 13. A 14. B 15. He paid a visit to Mrs. Hargrove that very evening. 注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 The next morning, Dylan found Mr. Pickford wearing a jersey just like his own! ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ During the art class, Mr. Pickford announced everyone was going to design their own superhero jersey with their families. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】The next morning, Dylan found Mr. Pickford wearing a jersey just like his own! All the students stared in amazement. Mr. Pickford smiled and said, “Dylan, your grandma made a wonderful jersey. It’s full of love, and I wanted one, too. In fact, I think it’s so cool that we should all have homemade jerseys.” The students nodded, feeling a bit ashamed. Dylan’s eyes widened with disbelief and gratitude. From that day on, the teasing stopped, and instead, kids asked Dylan if his grandma could make jerseys for them, turning a moment of shame into a trend of admiration. During the art class, Mr. Pickford announced everyone was going to design their own superhero jersey with their families. The classroom buzzed with excitement. Dylan worked alongside his grandma, beaming with pride. When the projects were displayed, Dylan’s jersey was front and center, a symbol of love and creativity. The once-mocked jersey now became a source of inspiration, and Dylan learned that true strength came from embracing the love around him and having the courage to be unique. 词汇激活 行为类 ①微笑:smile / grin / beam ②凝视:stare / gaze ③停止:stop / cease / end 情绪类 ①惊讶:amazement / astonishment / wonder ②感激:appreciation / thankfulness 【点睛】[高分句型1] From that day on, the teasing stopped, and instead, kids asked Dylan if his grandma could make jerseys for them, turning a moment of shame into a trend of admiration.(由连接词if引导的宾语从句作asked的宾语和现在分词turning作状语) [高分句型2] When the projects were displayed, Dylan’s jersey was front and center, a symbol of love and creativity.(由连接副词when引导时间状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
