I’m wring to tell you about our school’s labor course. To form the students’ correct view of labor, colorful labor programs are open every week. We can help plan vegetables or feed chickens in the school-run farm. Besides, students are also encouraged to participate in community service and voluntary work. Most of us are fascinated by the course because it offers an alternative to our busy school life. Not only are we relaxed but we have gained a higher moral value on life. Yours, Li Hua 第二节 (满分25分) After reading the diary, the son was filled with tears. He began to reflect on the days when he used to sit together with his father. His father would patiently answer the same question all 23 times without feeling impatient while his father asked him the same question just four times! The son thought to himself: When I am old, how will my son look at me? Will he think of me as a burden? Will he shout at me because of my poor sight, poor hearing or poor understanding? Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father. He made an apology to his father, begging his father to forgive him for his bad behavior. He said this aloud, “I promise to see you happy forever, Dad. It is you who have cared for me ever since I was a little child, showering your selfless affection on me. You worked hard to make money to guarantee me a quality life. I will serve you in the best way no matter how you behave.” 1. In my years working here, four as a teacher and another three as an art department leader, I’ve never seen such a talented graduating class. Over the last two weeks, we’ve seen hundreds of wonderful art projects, from outdoor photo journals to modern paintings that cover the entire walls of the passage to this hall. Plus, given that my specific area in the arts is fashion design, they didn’t learn all that from me! To be honest, all the parents and students here have every reason to feel proud. And next, I’d like to present the following student artists who have been awarded the chance to show their projects and give a short speech to the audience. To begin with, we have James Smith with an amazing Roman-inspired sculpture piece.Next, Jane Goodman will follow him with a short film. And finally, Michael Watts will present some mixed-media art created with the computer. Here, at RISD, we consider all art to be an expression of oneself, one’s passion, and the experience of life. So, let’s put this expression on display. Please, welcome to the stage, our first artist with his project. A With all work-related books available, finding guidance for one’s professional growth is as simple as ABC. But there’s something special given to us from someone we adore and look up to — mothers. I am blessed to have a mother who is a teacher. Growing up, she always encouraged me to follow what I enjoyed. I never felt the pressure to have to follow a certain career path because of status or finance, or just because it was believed to mean “earning a good living”. She recommended that I follow the path that might bring me the most joy. —Nancy My mom spent her entire career as a nurse. When I was hired as a healthcare consultant, it was an honor to be “Lauran’s daughter”. The best career lesson she taught me is to find my strong points. I didn’t love the hands-on caregiving, but I excelled in marketing healthcare programs. I’ve got the natural talent there, and enjoy my career. —Pat The best career advice I’ve gotten from my mom is that life is easier and happier when you are clear on your top priority (优先权) — and you can only have one top priority. You’ll be better off when you are honest with people about that priority and you give yourself permission to say no to things that are against that priority. —Rebecca The best advice from my mum was to be true to myself. For years, I had tried to succeed by learning from people who had found success in their respective careers. Although it had helped to some degree, when I truly accepted who I was and allowed myself to focus on my unique personality and strength, I found new levels of career growth. —Suzanne 21. What did Nancy’s mother advise her to do? A. Find her strength. B. Accept who she is. C. Know her priority. D. Pursue happiness. 22. What have Pat and Suzanne both learned? A. Develop natural talents. B. Make oneself a priority. C. Focus on one’s strength. D. Be honest with people. 23. In which column of the magazine will you find the text? A. Career guidance. B. Family relation. C. Mental health. D. Professional skills. D 22. C 23. 根据第二段“She recommended that I follow the path that might bring me the most joy.(她建议我走那条可能给我带来最大快乐的路。)” 根据第三段“I excelled in marketing healthcare programs. I’ve got the natural talent there, and enjoy my career.(我在营销医疗项目方面表现出色。我有这方面的天赋,也喜欢我的职业。)”和第四段“when I truly accepted who I was and allowed myself to focus on my unique personality and strength, I found new levels of career growth.(当我真正接受自己,并允许自己专注于自己独特的个性和优势时,我发现了职业发展的新高度。)” 根据第一段“With all work-related books available, finding guidance for one’s professional growth is as simple as ABC. But there’s something special given to us from someone we adore and look up to — mothers.(随着所有与工作相关的书籍的出现,寻找职业发展的指导变得像ABC一样简单。但是,我们敬仰和仰慕的人——母亲,给了我们一些特别的东西。)”可知,文章主要围绕母亲给我们的职业发展建议展开,接着列举了几个不同职业背景的人分享他们从母亲那里得到的关于职业发展的建议,因此可以推断这篇文章可能出现在杂志的职业指导专栏中。故选A。 B About once a week, a veterinarian (兽医) Kwane Stewart heads down to San Diego’s East Village to make his rounds, serving the dogs, cats and birds who are the treasured pets of downtown’s homeless community. Stewart’s parents were huge animal lovers. By age 6, he knew he wanted to be a vet. After graduation from a Colorado veterinary science program, he spent the next decade as a veterinarian. In 2008, he worked as head veterinarian at a country-run animal shelter in an area struck by the Great Recession. He saw pets abandoned and the work was extremely depressing. Four years into the shelter job, Stewart said he was burned out with guilt and ready to quit. Then one morning on his way to work, he saw a homeless man and a dog. He treated the dog’s skin condition and the animal was transformed. The owner was beyond grateful and said, “Thanks for not ignoring me and for treating my dog.” “That was the moment for me. I got back to saving animals and doing it on my own terms.” Stewart said. A few weeks later he set up a pop-up veterinary clinic at a soup kitchen, and when clients there suggested he take his services further, his new job as “Street Vet” began. In addition to treating common diseases, Stewart often provides vaccinations (接种疫苗) and general wellness checks. He also promotes “fear-free” pet care. Many of the people Stewart serves are not just grateful for the help but also form a deep bond with him, seeing him as someone who not only treats their pets but also acknowledges their humanity. “I can dream a little bit that people from all over the world will want to emulate what I do. ”Stewart said. Right now, he is building a network of trusted volunteers, technicians with hospitals and clinics. “These are all people who just reached out and said, ‘I’m inspired by what you do. How do I do it?’” he said. 24. What do we know about Steward’s current job? A. He runs an animal shelter. B. He adopts abandoned pets. C. He works for a science program. D. He attends to homeless people's pets. 25. Why is Stewart’s shelter job mentioned? A. To explain his change of career focus. B. To illustrate his professional competence. C. To explore the future of the industry. D. To reflect the challenges of the profession, 26. What do many people think of Steward? A. He’s odd. B. He’s frank. C. He’s humble. D. He’s merciful. 27. What does the underlined word “emulate” in the last paragraph mean? A. Follow the example of. B. Show respect for. C. Put the blame on. D. Pay attention to. D 25. A 26. D 27. 根据第一段“About once a week, a veterinarian Kwane Stewart heads down to San Diego’s East Village to make his rounds, serving the dogs, cats and birds who are the treasured pets of downtown's homeless community. (大约每周一次,兽医克瓦恩·斯图尔特前往圣地亚哥的东村巡视,为市中心无家可归者社区珍爱的宠物狗、猫和鸟提供服务。)”可知,斯图尔特目前的工作是照料无家可归者的宠物。故选D项。 25. 推理判断题。根据第二段中“He saw pets abandoned and the work was extremely depressing. Four years into the shelter job, Stewart said he was burned out with guilt and ready to quit.( 他看到宠物被遗弃,工作非常令人沮丧。在收容所工作了四年后,斯图尔特说他感到内疚,准备辞职。)”以及第三段“Then one morning on his way to work, he saw a homeless man and a dog. He treated the dog's skin condition and the animal was transformed. The owner was beyond grateful and said, “Thanks for not ignoring me and for treating my dog. ” “That was the moment for me. I got back to saving animals and doing it on my own terms. ” Stewart said.( 一天早上,在他上班的路上,他看到一个无家可归的人和一条狗。他治疗了狗的皮肤状况,这只动物被治疗了。主人非常感激地说:“谢谢你没有忽视我,还照顾我的狗。”“对我来说就是那个时刻。我重新开始拯救动物,并按照自己的方式去做。”斯图尔特说。)”和第四段中“A few weeks later he set up a pop-up veterinary clinic at a soup kitchen, and when clients there suggested he take his services further, his new job as “Street Vet” began.(几周后,他在一个施舍处开了一家临时兽医诊所,当那里的客户建议他进一步提供服务时,他的新工作“街头兽医”开始了。)” 故选A项。 26. 根据第四段中“Many of the people Stewart serves are not just grateful for the help but also form a deep bond with him, seeing him as someone who not only treats their pets but also acknowledges their humanity.( 斯图尔特服务的许多人不仅感激他的帮助,而且还与他建立了深厚的联系,认为他不仅善待他们的宠物,而且承认他们的人性。)” 根据最后一段中“Right now, he is building a network of trusted volunteers, technicians with hospitals and clinics. “These are all people who just reached out and said, ‘I’ m inspired by what you do. How do I do it?’” he said.( 现在,他正在建立一个由值得信赖的志愿者、医院和诊所的技术人员组成的网络。“这些人都愿意提供提援助,说,‘我被你所做的事情所鼓舞。我该怎么做呢?’”他说。)”可知,很多人受斯图尔特启发,询问如何做,说明他希望人们效仿他的做法。“emulate”意思是 “效仿,模仿”,和A选项Follow the example of“效仿”意思相近。 故选A项。 C A new study on baby birds shows that traffic noise can affect their growth and lead to lifelong harm. The finding raises new concerns about the effect of noise pollution on wildlife — and humans as well. Researchers already knew too much noise is likely to disturb birds, making it more difficult for the parents to communicate with and care for their baby birds. But it wasn’t clear whether the noise itself could directly harm young birds. Mylene Mariette, a behavioral ecologist at Deakin University, and her team set out to answer that question with birds held on campus in Melbourne, Australia. For 5 nights in a row, they played eggs either road noise or bird songs for several hours. The sounds were kept at a volume of 65 decibels (分贝)— about the same loudness as a conversation in a bar or city traffic. Other eggs were left in silence. After the eggs hatched, the baby birds received one of two treatments — road noise or bird songs — for another 9 nights. The baby birds heard the sounds in a separate room, and then were returned to their nests. Eggs exposed to traffic sounds were 19% less likely to hatch compared with those exposed to the sound of songs. It shows a clear effect of traffic noise, Mariette says. As the baby birds developed, they also showed worrying development signs. Those exposed to noise grew slower. Moreover, when those birds grew up, they had about half as many offspring (后代) as the birds exposed to songs as youngsters. Hans Slabbekoorn, an ecologist and animal behavior expert at Leiden University, notes that these concerns apply to humans as well. “The findings suggest that the acoustic (听觉的) environment of birds in cities and along highways should be better managed,” he writes, “and that the acoustic comfort in hospital environments for pregnant mothers and babies requires special attention.” Eventually, the research might help reveal how much and in what ways noise pollution should be reduced. 28. What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on about the study? A. Its process. B. Its result. C. Its difficulty. D. Its purpose. 29. How are the findings explained in paragraph 4? A. By giving examples. B. By analyzing reasons. C. By making comparisons. D. By making predictions. 30. What do the findings indicate? A. Move the birds from cities to protected areas. B. Make laws to close highways and other noisy places. C. Educate people on the bad effects of noise pollution. D. Pay special attention to the hospital environment for babies. 31. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Traffic noise helps birds communicate B. Scientists have found ways to reduce noise C. Hospital environments are greatly affected D. Traffic noise causes lifelong harm to baby birds 【答案】28. A 29. C 30. D 31. 根据第三段“Mylene Mariette, a behavioral ecologist at Deakin University, and her team set out to answer that question with birds held on campus in Melbourne, Australia. For 5 nights in a row, they played eggs either road noise or bird songs for several hours. The sounds were kept at a volume of 65 decibels (分贝)—about the same loudness as a conversation in a bar or city traffic. Other eggs were left in silence. After the eggs hatched, the baby birds received one of two treatments—road noise or bird songs—for another 9 nights. The baby birds heard the sounds in a separate room, and then were returned to their nests.”(迪肯大学的行为生态学家Mylene Mariette和她的团队开始用澳大利亚墨尔本校园里饲养的鸟类来回答这个问题。 故选A。 29. 根据第四段“Eggs exposed to traffic sounds were 19% less likely to hatch compared with those exposed to the sound of songs. It shows a clear effect of traffic noise, Mariette says. As the baby birds developed, they also showed worrying development signs. Those exposed to noise grew slower. Moreover, when those birds grew up, they had about half as many offspring (后代) as the birds exposed to songs as youngsters.”(与那些暴露在歌声中的蛋相比,暴露在交通声音中的蛋孵化的可能性要低19%。 根据最后一段“The findings suggest that the acoustic (听觉的) environment of birds in cities and along highways should be better managed,” he writes, “and that the acoustic comfort in hospital environments for pregnant mothers and babies requires special attention.”(研究结果表明,城市和高速公路沿线鸟类的声环境应该得到更好的管理,”他写道,“医院环境中孕妇和婴儿的声舒适需要特别注意。”) 根据第一段“A new study on baby birds shows that traffic noise can affect their growth and lead to lifelong harm.”(一项关于幼鸟的新研究表明,交通噪音会影响它们的生长,并导致终身伤害。) D。 D Bricks are one of the oldest known building materials, dating back thousands of years. But researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have found a new use for bricks: as energy storage units. A team of engineers and chemists have found a way to transform an ordinary house brick into a pseudo-battery — allowing it to conduct and store electricity. The bricks are powerful enough to illuminate(点亮)an LED light bulb and cost only about $ 3 to make. “I love the idea of adding value to things that are inexpensive, things that are affordable, things that we kind of take for granted,” said Julio D’Arcy, an assistant professor of chemistry at Washington University and one of the researchers on this project. The brick battery relies on the reddish pigment(色素)known as iron oxide, or rust, that gives red bricks their color. The scientists pumped the bricks with several gases that react with iron oxide to produce a network of plastic fibers. These microscopic fibers coat the empty spaces inside the bricks — and conduct electricity. “What we’re trying to do is: we’re trying to make specialized plastics that are only used on the nano(纳米)scale — where we use very little of the plastic, and we can actually insert that plastic inside construction materials. ” The study is in the journal Nature Communications. In the future, D’Arcy says, a brick wall could potentially serve a double purpose: providing structural support and storing electricity generated from renewable energy sources, such as solar panels. The technology is still at least a few years away from being ready for the commercial market. And right now the energy storage capacity of the bricks is still pretty low — about 1 percent of a lithium battery. But the team is now testing ways to improve brick performance — because it looks like you can teach an old brick new tricks. 32. What appeals to Julio D’Arcy listing bricks as their subjects? A. Their low expense. B. Their common existence. C. Their additional value. D. Their internal composition. 33. What is the last step of making a brick conduct electricity? A. Pump the brick with gases. B. Color the brick red. C. Produce microscopic fibers. D. Cover its inner vacancy with microscopic fibers. 34. What will the future bricks be like according to the passage? A. Construction materials possessing low energy storage capacity. B. Construction materials generating renewable energy resources. C. Construction materials used for electricity storage. D. Construction materials with built-in common plastic. 35. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the technology? A. Skeptical. B. Objective. C. Conservative. D. Controversial. C 33. D 34. C 35. 由题干关键词“Julio D’Arcy”定位到第二段中“I love the idea of adding value to things that are inexpensive, things that are affordable, things that we kind of take for granted, ” (我喜欢把价值赋予那些不贵的东西,那些我们可以负担得起的东西, 那些我们认为理所当然的东西的这个想法)。 由题干关键词“a brick conduct electricity”定位到第三段“The brick battery relies on the reddish pigment(色素)known as iron oxide, or rust, that gives red bricks their color. The scientists pumped the bricks with several gases that react with iron oxide to produce a network of plastic fibers. These microscopic fibers coat the empty spaces inside the bricks — and conduct electricity.”(砖块电池依赖于红色颜料,氧化铁,或铁锈,使红砖呈现出它们的颜色。 可知,第—步∶color the brick red;第二步∶pump the brick with gaes;第三步∶produce microscopicfibers;第四步∶coat the empty spaces inside the bricks,所以最后一步是用显微纤维覆盖砖块内部的空隙。 根据文中第五段中“In the future, D’Arcy says, a brick wall could potentially serve a double purpose: providing structural support and storing electricity generated from renewable energy sources, such as solar panels.”( D’Arcy说:“在未来,砖墙可能有双重用途: 提供结构支撑和储存可再生能源产生的电力,比如太阳能电池板。”) 结合最后一段“The technology is still at least a few years away from being ready for the commercial market. And right now the energy storage capacity of the bricks is still pretty low”(这项技术至少还需要几年才能投入商业市场。 If the idea of going to the office party makes you worried or you’re in a stressed state about similar get-togethers, you’re not alone. ___36___ It’s part of our nature that we’re concerned about things like reputation and status. There are some psychology findings that you might find comforting. Here’s a study that led psychologists to propose something called the “spotlight effect”. It is the phenomenon that we tend to think people are paying more attention to us than they really are. ___37___ Then researchers estimated how many people in the room noticed the T-shirts. It turned out that the participants had massively overestimated just how many people noticed their embarrassing clothes. ___38___ Remember that when you’re upset about what to wear or what to say, most people are wrapped up in themselves, not watching you as closely as you might think. ___39___ Constantly monitoring your own words and behaviors will fuel your nerves. And in the worst cases, it will lead you to act more awkwardly. Anything you can do to try to get it out of your head ought to alleviate (缓解) your anxiety. Further, why not set yourself a small goal of being on the lookout for anyone else seeming uncomfortable or left out? There must be people feeling that way, and you could help make their experience more positive. Above all, remember that avoidance never helps anxiety. What’s more, don’t expect too much of yourself. Pace yourself, and do your best. ___40___ A. The most effective way is to be strategic. B. After all, social occasions are an opportunity. C. In this way, you might have a little fun along the way. D. Feeling nervous about socializing is incredibly common. E. Actually, the others just weren’t paying that much attention. F. Indeed, too much self-focus is a major driver of social anxiety. G. The father asked his son, “What is this?’’ The son replied, “It is a crow.’’ After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this?” The son said, “Father, I have just told you. It’s a crow!” After a little while, the old father again asked his son for the third time, “What is this?’’ At this time some expression of impatience was felt in the son’s tone when he said to his father coldly. “It’s a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son for the fourth time, “What is this?” This time, the son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’? Are you not able to understand this?” A little while later, the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered (发皱的) diary, which he had maintained since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page. When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary: “Today my little son, aged three, was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. Paragraph 2: Feeling ashamed, the son got down on his knees before his father. He made an apology to his father, begging his father to forgive him for his bad behavior. He said this aloud, “I promise to see you happy forever, Dad. It is you who have cared for me ever since I was a little child, showering your selfless affection on me. You worked hard to make money to guarantee me a quality life. I will serve you in the best way no matter how you behave.” 回想起:reflect on/recall ②.道歉:make an apology/apologize ③.照顾:care for/look after 情绪类 ①.耐心地:patiently/with patience ②.高兴的:happy/pleased 【点睛】[高分句型1]. B About once a week, a veterinarian (兽医) Kwane Stewart heads down to San Diego’s East Village to make his rounds, serving the dogs, cats and birds who are the treasured pets of downtown’s homeless community. “I can dream a little bit that people from all over the world will want to emulate what I do.” Stewart said. C. What does the underlined word “emulate” in the last paragraph mean? A. Follow the example of. B. Show respect for. C. Put the blame on. D. Pay attention to. C A new study on baby birds shows that traffic noise can affect their growth and lead to lifelong harm. Traffic noise causes lifelong harm to baby birds D Bricks are one of the oldest known building materials, dating back thousands of years. But researchers at Washington Universitya in St. “I love the idea of adding value to things that are inexpensive, things that are affordable, things that we kind of take for granted, ”said Julio D’Arcy, an assistant professor of chemistry at Washington University and one of the researchers on this project. D.
