Last Thursday afternoon I found myself going down the east side of the Grunhornlucke,a
3,280-metre mountain pass (in Switzerland's Bernese Oberland,on skis while tied to the
end of a rope.Visibility had disappeared at the top of the pass.As the first in the party,I was
meant to be navigating,so I needed something which became crucial at this stage in the project:
a sense of direction.
This is my final column on my attempt to master ski mountaineering, after I nearly died
doing that activity in Russia in 2017.I am grateful to those who have followed my journey and
been in touch. In many ways I am extremely tired, weathered by the mountains. My face is
sun-and wind-burned;I periodically think that I am forgetting how to speak English.Much of
me is ready to go home. But this project still has a long way to go,with the goal of a ski
mountaineering race next year.
The focus of my course this week with Swiss mountaineering school Bergpunkt, over four
stormy days in the Bernese Oberland, was learning to operate independently in the high
mountains. This move has been what this whole project is about.Yes,I hope there will be a
race at the end.But more important to me is this idea of developing competency in one narrow
human endeavor(s努力)一uphill skiing一as a secret of competence more generally.
We made it to the pass, and again roped up for the zero-visibility glacier descent. My
glasses iced up;the rope periodically pulled short. But we made it down into a tree-lined valley
under a clearing sky.
There remain two things I want to do this winter. As my last guided ski tour,I'd like to do
the Haute Route, the classic route between Chamonix and Zermatt. The second, and perhaps
more important objective, involving as it does the overcoming of both fear and dependency,is
to do some independent ski mountaineering. With friends, not professional guides.
24.What difficulty did the author have last Thursday?
A.He broke his skis.
B.He could not see clearly.
C.He lost touch with his team.
D.He could not tie a rope by himself.
25.What is the main reason for the author taking the course?
A.To prepare for a race ahead.
B.To finish a school project.
C.To learn a new life skill.
D.To see his potential.
26.What is the author eager to do this winter?
A.Go ski mountaineering independently.
B.Compete in a ski mountaineering race.
C.Finish two guided long-distance ski tours.
D.Conquer the mountain pass in Bernese Oberland.

An asteroid (struck Earth 66 million years ago, causing a disaster that wiped out
roughly 75 percent of known fossil species virtually overnight. However, many frogs survived.
“The high resilience(适应力)of frogs to the mass extinction has been a mystery,”says
Chinese Academy of Sciences biologist Anderson Feijo. But now he may have found an
answer:The frogs that survived the worst day on Earth may have not been too big,nor too
small,but just the right size.
But why would being not too big or not too small make such a large difference?Study co-
author Catharina Karlsson notes that medium-sized frogs fared better during the disaster, and
through time, than extreme-sized frogs.Very small frog species can absorb water fast, but they
also dry out quicker in hotter climates, the researchers point out, while larger frogs can hold on
to water better but take longer to rehydrate (if they dry out.If a habitat's climate rapidly
changes, then frogs at either end of the size scale will face new challenges, while medium-sized
frogs will hit a sweet spot:They are able to absorb water fast enough while also holding on
to it.
The researchers didn't just look at the disaster that struck 66 million years ago, though.
They surveyed fossil frog records ranging from about 220 million years ago until the present to
check the pattern."From local to global scales,as well as through evolutionary history,
medium-sized frogs seem more resilient to climate changes and are the only ones found in more
extreme environments,"Feijo says.
In a world where humans are quickly changing the global climate, these results may give
conservationists clues as to which frog species might be most at risk.A little more than 50
percent of very small or very large frog species will be in a "risk area"by 2100,almost four
times as many at present, the researchers conclude.Even though many frog species have ways
to cope with dry habitats, the climate is likely to shift too quickly to allow extreme-sized species
to adapt.
28.What puzzled Anderson Feijó?
A.What species became extinct 66 million years ago.
B.When Earth was struck by the asteroid.
C.Why frogs survived the mass extinction.
D.How frogs prepared for the disaster.
29.What does the underlined part "hit a sweet spot"in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Develop new skills.
B.Be at an advantage.
C.Do just the opposite
D.Be in the air.
高二英语试卷第5页(共10页)
30.What does paragraph 3 mainly stress?
A.It is tough to carry out the study.
B.The study conclusion is credible.
C.Frogs also follow“Survival of the fittest”.
D.Environmental stress impacts frogs little.
31.What is the significance of the study?
A.It provides conservationists with ways to save frogs.
B.It reminds people of the severity of climate change.
C.It identifies climate-threatened frog species.
D.It predicts global weather patterns.

In the Wasatch Mountains of the western US on the slopes above a spring-fed lake, there
stands a single giant organism that provides an entire ecosystem,Pando,a 108-acre stand of
aspen clones(颤杨克隆体).
Although it looks like a woodland of individual trees with striking white bark and small
leaves,Pando is actually 47,000 genetically identical stems (that arise from an
interconnected root network.Pando has been around for thousands of years. Its longevity means
a whole ecosystem of 68 plant species and many animals have been supported under its shade.
Although Pando is protected by the US National Forest Service,it is in danger of
disappearing due to several factors.Deer cause one of the biggest worries.Wolves once kept
them in check, but their number is now much larger because of the loss of these predators
)Deer also tend to gather in Pando as the protection the woodland receives means they
are not in danger of being hunted there. As older trees die or fall down, light reaches the
woodland floor which stimulates new clonal stems to start growing, but when these animals eat
the tops off newly forming stems, they die. This means in large areas of Pando there is little
new growth.Besides, older stems in Pando are also being affected by diseases.
Pando arose after the last ice age had passed and has dealt with a largely stable climate ever.
since. But now climate change threatens the size of the tree.Aspen stands have been struggling
with climate change-related pressures, such as reduced water supply and warmer weather earlier
in the year, making it harder for trees to form new leaves, which have led to declines in
coverage.
Despite every cause for concern, there is hope as scientists are helping us unlock the
secrets to Pando's resilience(适应力),while conservation groups are working to protect this
tree and its associated ecosystem. And a new conservation group called the Friends of Pando
aims to make the tree accessible to virtually everyone through 360 video recordings.
32.What do we know about Pando?
A.It is a group of genetically identical aspen trees.
B.It is an organism made up of aspen clones.
C.It is an ecosystem of 68 plant species.
D.It is a wildlife reserve.
高二英语试卷第6页(共10页)
33.What is the main reason deer make a threat to Pando?
A.They consume new growth in the woodland.
B.They spread diseases among new clonal stems.
C.They compete with dying trees for water resources.
D.They attract wolves which damage the ecosystem there.
34.What has climate change brought to Pando?
A.Its loss of habitat.
B.Its lack of resilience.
海
C.The reduction of its range.
D.The decline of its ice cover.
35.Why does the Friends of Pando post videos of Pando?
A.To attract visitors.
B.To study its ecosystem.
C.To unite conservation groups.
D.To gather support for its protection.

curiosity as the driver got out and slowly raised a huge rock wall.
The kids lined up to try it.They climbed to the top and rang the bell that hung at the
highest point.Three people could climb side by side and talk to each other,so gradually the
adults tried it,too.
"Let's go get in line,"my husband Neil said."No,you go ahead without me."I had
good excuses.I didn't have the right shoes;I forgot my sunglasses.I watched everyone else
having fun, though, and finally convinced myself to try it.A belt was wrapped around me so
there was no way to fall.Concentrating on each foothold,I slowly made my way up.Within a
few minutes,I made it to the top and proudly rang the bell."Way to go,Col!"Neil shouted.

This is ridiculous(可笑的),I thought..Everyone below recognized my fear and called up all

"Just hold the rope and jump. You can't fall!"
All well-intentioned advice,but I still couldn't move.Then my husband was suddenly next
to me on the wall.

M: I actually don’t like either. My favorite fruit is bananas.

W: Will you come with me to my doctor’s appointment tomorrow after school? I hurt my leg from basketball practice yesterday.
M: Sure, I am off work tomorrow. I will pick you up from school and take you to the doctor’s office.
Text 3
M: Do you think we’ll be able to see the bright stars tonight? I heard it was supposed to rain, but it looks fine.
W: I don’t think it will rain, but there will be many clouds in the way tonight.
Text 4
W: I have everything planned out for lunch and dinner today. I went shopping last night.
M: Well, I know your parents won’t be here till noon, but I just woke up and need something to eat. What can I use to make breakfast?

W: Where is everyone? Is there a meeting I haven’t been invited to?
M: Actually, we need to go outside. We’re practising how to get out in case of a fire.
Text 6
M: My co-worker has three baby cats to give away. Do you want one?
W: Is that all I can have? I’d like to have them all.
M: Other people may want one, but you can have first choice. There’s a black one, a gray one and a white one.
W: It is said that black cats bring good luck, but I think I’ll go for a gray cat.
M: OK. If you can have another one, I’ll bring the black to you as well.
W: Let’s hope no one else wants them.
Text 7
W: Do you want to see my paintings?
M: I know you are a police officer, but I didn’t know you were an artist.
W: It’s just a hobby. Something I do just in my spare time.
M: It must take your mind off work.
W: Yes. I’m not like you. Being a designer must involve lots of artistic skills.
M: Yeah, you could say that. Let’s see your work.
W: I only have two finished paintings. I’m still doing one and I’ve just sold three.
M: You must be good.
W: People seem to like them.
M: Do you show them in galleries or in shops?
W: I hang them up in the office and people often ask if they can buy one.

W: Excuse me, sir. Is this your wallet? It was on the floor.
M: Oh, thank you, young lady. I knew I had dropped it but I couldn’t see it. My sight is failing. I’m 92 years old, you know.
W: Really? Why didn’t you get someone else to come here for you?
M: The bank needs my signature, so I had to come by myself. I’m OK. It’s just my eyesight that is bad. My age is making my sight failing. I could have seen an eye doctor to improve it if I was younger.
W: You are doing it very well now.
M: Yes, it’s just age. I still do all my own shopping and gardening and I haven’t had any accidents yet.
W: Can I do anything for you?
M: No, thank you. I wish all young people were as kind as you.
Text 9
M: That looks like a healthy basket of shopping — vegetables, fruit and not a cookie or a chip in sight.
W: Well, I like to keep the family in good shape, Mr. Jones. It’s my duty to look after them. How much do I owe you?
M: Hmm, let me see. The grapes are £2. The 2 watermelons are £4. And the vegetables come to £6. So that’s a total of £12.
W: But the watermelons are on offer — 2 for the price of one.
M: Of course, I’m sorry. I’ll knock £2 off the total. That’s £10.
W: OK, thank you.
M: I’m like you. I like to eat healthily.
W: I find it’s usually cheaper, and it tastes nicer, too.
M: Do you need any help with that bag?
W: No, it’s OK. My husband is in the car outside.
M: Isn’t he working today?
W: No, he has a day off.

Good morning to you all — parents, students and my fellow teachers. Thank you for coming along to say goodbye. I know we all have to retire sooner or later, but it does feel like a sad occasion to me, because I have had so many happy years at this school. It feels like just yesterday that I was leaving my previous job to join this school. My last 25 years’ working for this school have passed so quickly. Perhaps it is because I have been in such a good school. From the 12-year-olds in the first year, to those who are now 18 and ready to leave for university or a job, I have enjoyed working with you all. I can honestly say that getting this job was like winning a prize. I have met some amazing, wise people — star students, great friends. But perhaps most important of all, it was here that I met the man I would later marry, and who will soon be joining me in retirement.
