Old buildings still stand, but new art centres, fun activities, and popular places are bringing back their past glory. Here are four towns to visit this summer. Scarborough, Yorkshire Scarborough may be Britain’s first seaside spot for vacation. In the 1600s, people came for its health-giving springs. After years of downturn, it’s now improving thanks to new plans: hosting everything from poetry readings to rock music festivals, while still welcoming visitors to its top-rated beaches. Margate, Kent Every coastal town wants to attract visitors all year, and Margate does this best. When bad weather keeps people from the beach, there’s lots of indoor fun-like old-fashioned games and the Turner Contemporary art centre. But what really helps Margate grow is the strong community spirit, everyone working together. Barmouth, Wales On the way to famous North Wales spots like Snowdonia, don’t miss Barmouth! This hidden town sits where a river meets the sea, with mountains behind its beaches. Its slogan (口号) is “mountain, sand & sea” — just look at the sunset over the water with mountains in the distance. Many visitors love it so much that they decide to move here and become residents! Penzance, Cornwall Penzance has recovered slowly, not suddenly. Over the last 10 years, many new projects have helped the town. The main events are the 10-day Golowan festival, which features parades and shows, and the Montol winter celebration. Visitors can take a sleeper train (a train with beds) from London, or fly by helicopter to nearby Scilly Isles. The local food is also very popular! 1. What attracted people to Scarborough in the 1600s? A. Poetry readings. B. Music festivals. C. Seaside attractions. D. Healthful springs. 2. What is the main factor for Margate’s growth? A. Warm weather. B. Indoor activities. C. Local teamwork. D. Modern facilities. 3. Which town has liveable natural conditions? A. Margate, Kent. B. Barmouth, Wales. C. Penzance, Cornwall. D. Scarborough, Yorkshire. B Our 12-year-old television broke down. Its slow death began with a warning that flashed across the screen one night: This function is not available now. I tried cleaning the remote control, restarting the TV and updating the system. Nothing worked. I thought about getting a new TV, but we didn’t have the money to replace it. I spent hours online researching and concluded the motherboard (主板) was near the end of its life. Motherboard. The word held significance. I heard it as two words: mother bored. With my younger son, Henry, away at college, my role as a mom had taken a big turn. I was still trying to get used to this change. I was, honestly, a little bored. I had just thought about watching Henry’s favorite TV show Jeopardy after dinner to kill time, but now the annoying warning ruined my relaxation. I wished the TV would fix itself, but the warning came more often as the week went on. Disappointed, I decided to settle down with a book instead. I searched my bookshelf and found a historical novel that I’d been given as a gift a few years ago but never read. The first few nights, I was restless. I fought the desire to pick up my phone and research new TVs or check social media. But once I got lost in the book, everything changed. A new level of relaxation opened, and a deep sense of peace filled my day and even my night’s sleep. We moved the broken TV out of the living room. Now when I think about that annoying warning, I feel thankful. I realize that blessings sometimes enter our lives disguised as problems, and the answer isn’t always getting something new but rediscovering gifts we already have. 4. Which part of the TV was broken? A. System. B. Screen. C. Motherboard. D. Remote control. 5. Why did the author hear “motherboard” as “mother bored”? A. She was annoyed at the warning. B. She felt empty with her son’s absence. C. She adapted to the role of being a mom. D. She found watching Jeopardy a waste of time. 6. What did the author turn to finally? A. Her phone. B. A book. C. New TVs. D. Social media. 7. What does the author’s experience show? A. Knowledge is power. B. All roads lead to Rome. C. It is never too old to learn. D. Good can come out of bad. C When students at Brown University enter their campus fitness center and step on a certain treadmill (跑步机), they aren’t only working out. They’re also producing electricity to power the very building they’re in. Brown’s Nelson Fitness Center recently housed a series of cardio (有氧的) machines, made by the company SportsArt, that change human energy into electricity. The gym equipment came about thanks to a student project several years before. Elina Pipa, now a senior at Brown, took a class on climate solutions. The course required students to develop a business case for a real-world climate solution. While some may have imagined distant situations, Pipa chose to focus on something closer to home: Brown University’s own exercise center. Soon, Pipa’s idea became a reality. Gym-goers can see the impact directly. Along with your time or miles, the SportsArt equipment also shows the “instant watts (瓦特)” based on your pace. SportsArt says its equipment can produce up to 220 watt hours of electricity per hour of workout. In a separate test, one reporter found that 30 minutes of walking created about 80 watt hours of electricity, enough to power an LED light for about six hours. “It was super exciting because you could see that there is an impact,” she says. “When you see that even your gym equipment can do something, you start understanding it is possible to have habits in your life that are positive for the environment.” This gym equipment is in place now -with even more machines on the way, she says. The fact shows that students don’t have to wait until they graduate to take climate action. “You don’t need to reinvent the wheel to have an impact,” she says. “Sometimes it’s about taking an existing idea and running with it.” 8. What is special about Brown University fitness center? A. It is powered by workouts. B. It has traditional treadmills. C. It offers tailored fitness plans. D. It provides free fitness classes. 9. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about? A. A task from SportsArt. B. The origin of Pipa’s idea. C. A project of Brown University. D. The solution to a business case. 10. Why does the author mention the separate test in paragraph 3? A To record the progress of users. B. To stress the benefits of walking. C. To tell the methods of producing power. D. To prove the effectiveness of the equipment. 11. What does Pipa suggest students do to help the environment? A. Form good habits. B. Start with inventions. C. Focus on academics first. D. Act on current ideas now. D When facing an enemy, animals generally tend to fight, flee or simply stop moving. But baby caterpillars (毛毛虫) do something else completely: they vibrate (振动). Newly-born caterpillars, very tiny, live and feed alone on the very tips of leaves. In a recent study, scientists found that the caterpillars are rather protective of their little habitat. If another caterpillar moves into their territory (领地), these tiny creatures start wildly shaking their heads and bodies against the leaf. The behaviors signal that their leaf tip is off-limits to an unexpected visitor. This research “takes me into how complex the sensory world of even a tiny creature is — a world that humans are just not aware of,” says Jayne E. Yack, an author of the new study. The scientists used close-up videos and an instrument that could pick up a leaf’s vibrations without touching it to explore the caterpillars’ shaky world. “For such small caterpillars, their vibrations are like lion roars,” Yack says. “You have to take the headphones off your ears because they’re so loud.” The flexible leaf tip may also increase the sound, she adds. These wild vibrations could be a bluff (虚张声势); some spiders make similar moves. “It’s a distinct possibility that they’re copying a spider to prevent somebody else from taking over their precious leaf tip,” Yack says. Like singing birds, “these caterpillars are also declaring ownership of their territories and competing with enemies — in this case by sending vibrations through the leaf surface rather than the air,” says Andrew Mason, who studies animal communication and was not involved in the study. “This study gives us a window onto this otherwise undetectable world.” 12. What does the underlined word “off-limits” probably mean in paragraph 2? A. Relevant. B. Forbidden. C. Limited. D. Accessible. 13. What can we learn about caterpillars from paragraph 3? A. They are too small to track. B. They vibrate in various ways. C. Their vibrations are very powerful. D. Their world is simpler than expected. 14. What might be the purpose of caterpillars copying spiders? A. To attract partners. B. To make traps. C. To protect territories. D. To attack enemies. 15. What does Andrew Mason think of the study? A. Breakthrough. B. One-sided. C. Risky. D. Typical. I used to hate working out, but now it’s my favorite part of the week. When I got to the restaurant, the owner asked, “Have you had any experience?” “Oh, yes!” I nodded. “Great! Can you start in a few days?” “Yes, yes!” I answered eagerly. On my first day, the owner explained what I should pay attention to. Then I watched how the other waitresses set the tables, taking notes of every detail. The restaurant started to get busy. A group of men came in and walked to the tables I waited on. I immediately felt nervous. I watched them take their seats and settle in. With a deep breath, I said to myself, “I can do this,” repeating it several times. I picked up the menus and made my way to them, hands sweating. “Good morning, gentlemen. Welcome to our restaurant. 【答案】4. C 5. B 6. B 7. I was still trying to get used to this change. I was, honestly, a little bored.(我的小儿子亨利去上大学了,我作为母亲的角色发生了很大的转变。我还在努力适应这种变化。说实话,我有点无聊。)”可知,作者因儿子不在身边感到空虚,所以将“motherboard”听成“mother bored”。故选B项。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“Disappointed, I decided to settle down with a book instead. I searched my bookshelf and found a historical novel that I’d been given as a gift a few years ago but never read.(失望的是,我决定用一本书来安顿下来。我翻遍书架,找到了一本几年前作为礼物送给我但从未读过的历史小说。)”及第五段“But once I got lost in the book, everything changed.(但一旦我沉浸在书中,一切都变了。)” 根据最后一段“I realize that blessings sometimes enter our lives disguised as problems, and the answer isn’t always getting something new but rediscovering gifts we already have.(我意识到,福气有时会以问题的形式进入我们的生活,答案并不总是得到新的东西,而是重新发现我们已经拥有的礼物。)” Good can come out of bad.(坏事可以变成好事。) C When students at Brown University enter their campus fitness center and step on a certain treadmill (跑步机), they aren’t only working out. “It was super exciting because you could see that there is an impact” she says. A. To record the progress of users. 8. A 9. B 10. D 11. While some may have imagined distant situations, Pipa chose to focus on something closer to home: Brown University’s own exercise center.(几年前,由于一个学生项目,健身房设备应运而生。 根据第三段“SportsArt says its equipment can produce up to 220 watt hours of electricity per hour of workout. In a separate test, one reporter found that 30 minutes of walking created about 80 watt hours of electricity, enough to power an LED light for about six hours.(SportsArt称其设备每小时锻炼可产生高达220瓦时的电力。 根据最后一段“The fact shows that students don’t have to wait until they graduate to take climate action. ‘You don’t need to reinvent the wheel to have an impact,’ she says. ‘Sometimes it’s about taking an existing idea and running with it.’(这一事实表明,学生不必等到毕业再采取气候行动。 D When facing an enemy, animals generally tend to fight, flee or simply stop moving. B. One-sided. C. Risky. D. Typical. 12. B 13. C 14. C 15. The behaviors signal that their leaf tip is off-limits to an unexpected visitor.(如果另一只毛毛虫进入它们的领地,这些小家伙就会对着叶子疯狂地摇头晃身。 和最后一段“these caterpillars are also declaring ownership of their territories and competing with enemies — in this case by sending vibrations through the leaf surface rather than the air(这些毛毛虫也在宣布对自己领地的所有权,并与敌人竞争——在这种情况下,它们通过叶子表面而不是空气发送振动)”可猜测,新生毛毛虫会通过强烈振动宣布对自己叶尖领地的所有权,禁止其他毛毛虫进入自己的领地,off-limits意为“禁止的”,与B选项Forbidden语义一致。 根据第三段“‘For such small caterpillars, their vibrations are like lion roars,’ Yack says. ‘You have to take the headphones off your ears because they’re so loud.’(亚克说:‘对于这么小的毛毛虫来说,它们的振动就像狮子的吼叫。 根据第四段“‘It’s a distinct possibility that they’re copying a spider to prevent somebody else from taking over their precious leaf tip,’ Yack says.(亚克说:‘它们很有可能在模仿蜘蛛,以防止其他生物占据它们宝贵的叶尖。’)” 根据最后一段Andrew Mason所说“This study gives us a window onto this otherwise undetectable world.(这项研究为我们打开了一扇窗,让我们得以了解这个原本无法察觉的世界。)” 故选A项。 I used to hate working out, but now it’s my favorite part of the week. Here are simple tips to encourage yourself into loving exercise. Remember, every person is different, and what works for one might not work for another. ____16____ Some of us love doing exercise by ourselves, while some of us are social butterflies. ____17____ Make exercise a chance to hang out with friends. Doing something hard is tough and tiresome. Doing something hard with friends is funny and competitive. There is something in behavioral science called coupling. ____18____ In terms of working out, this means adding another activity to your workout. For example, if you love music, you can listen to songs as you run outdoors. ____19____ Well, that’s what the science says, but it wasn’t easy to feel that at the beginning of my exercise journey. That’s why it was super important to treat myself after a good workout. Treating yourself connects exercise with something good happening to you, like visiting your favorite coffee shop or watching your favorite TV show. One of the best things to start exercising is to take it easy. If you work out every single day, you’re likely to burn out. Therefore, take it easy. Start with movements you like to do. Go on walks, listen to your songs and enjoy some fresh air. Do exercise two or three times a week. This might be one of the most important tips. ____20____ A. You have to slow down before taking off. B. Working out can give you feel-good emotions. C. They like the effort, the sweat, and the hard work. D. Try them out and see if any of the tips work for you. E. It’s when you put two seemingly unrelated things together. F. If you don’t like working out alone, make it a group activity. G. However, there is some science behind exercising and brain health. 16. D 17. F 18. E 19. B 20. I picked up a newspaper, looking through the want ads. I underlined the jobs that seemed suitable for me. One of them caught my eye: “Waitress Wanted.” “Why not?” I dressed quickly, pulled my hair back, and stood in front of the mirror. “I can do this,” I told myself. My name’s Flo, and I’m new here. It’s my pleasure to serve you. Our special is fish. Would you like to try it?” All of them smiled at me and agreed to have a try. “How lucky I am to meet such friendly guests on my first day!” I thought. Before the food was ready, I’d watched some waitresses pile (摞) at least three plates on an arm. It didn’t look so hard. When my order came up, I confidently placed three plates on one arm and headed through the kitchen door. Plate one with fish was placed on the table, nice and easy. Plate two, steak, the same. Plate three, however, fell directly onto a man’s lap! Creamy fruit salad ran right down his trousers. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ He refused my offer to pay and comforted me. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: Creamy fruit salad ran right down his trousers. My face burned with embarrassment as the entire table fell silent. “I’m so sorry, sir! Let me clean that up for you!” I grabbed a stack of napkins, my hands trembling. To my surprise, the man burst out laughing. “Well, that’s one way to make an impression!” he said, dabbing at the mess. The other diners joined in the laughter, and the tension eased. He refused my offer to pay and comforted me. “Don’t worry about it,” he said kindly. “Everyone has their first-day jitters.” His words made me tear up, but I blinked them away. Determined to prove myself, I worked extra hard the rest of the shift, double-checking every order. By closing time, the owner patted my shoulder and said, “Good job. Mistakes happen, but what matters is how you recover.” That night, as I walked home, I realized this wasn’t just about waiting tables. It was about humility and the kindness of strangers. And for the first time in weeks, I felt hopeful about the future. 词汇激活 行为类 ①抓住:grab/grasp/seize ②颤抖:tremble/shake/quiver ③重要:matter/count ④意识到:realize/be aware of 情绪类 ①尴尬:embarrassment/awkwardness/uneasiness ②惊讶:surprise/astonishment/amazement 【点睛】[高分句型1] Mistakes happen, but what matters is how you recover.
