W:I don’t know what to do with my daughter’s smoking.
M:I know how you feel. My daughter also smokes. But I really don’t think there is anything we can do.
W:What? We must stop them smoking before they get hopelessly addicted. They’re only teenagers.
M:So what can we do? You know teenagers will go against us if we say no to anything. Actually. I believe it is largely the fault of advertisements and movies, all those beautiful, slim models and actresses. I know my daughter probably starves herself and then makes up for hunger by smoking.(11) It does make me upset. It’s so dangerous and poisonous, but I think if I force her to stop, she will go against me and smoke even more.
W:I see where you are coming from, but I think discipline is needed and the society lacks it.(12)
M:Well, let’s handle it in our own different ways and we can discuss the progress.

W:I’m going back on the 30th of July. Four weeks from today,(13) I’ll be on the plane, on my way home.
M:When you go home, what are you going to do?
W:Ah, in September I’m going back to college because I want to be a primary school teacher in Manchester(14), so I have to do a one-yearcourse to qualify, and then hopefully I’ll start teaching next September back in Manchester.
M:It sounds like you like kids very much.
W:Yeah. When I worked in Prague, I taught some children classes(15) and I really, really enjoyed teaching, so hopefully I will like it in Manchester as well.
M:What made you decide to become a teacher?
W:I’m not really sure. My father is a teacher and he’s really trying hard to talk me out of doing it because he thinks it has too much work(16), but I enjoy talking to people and being around children and teaching, so hopefully it will be nice for me.

W:Good morning, everyone, and thank you for coming to the new Teen Programme here at the Park Hill Leisure Centre. I’d like to take you through the programme, and then give you some information about how to sign up for the sports and activities we offer. Afterwards, you’ll have an opportunity to take a tour of the centre(17), and also have some time with our instructors.
Let’s go through the classes first. As you can see from the Teen Programme handout in your pack, we have lots of classes on offer. Our instructors are highly qualified and have lots of experience of training young people. Diana is our dance instructor, and she gives classes in jazz on Wednesday and Thursday evenings.(18) Jim usually takes the football practice, but this year he will be running the baseball practice. This class has been changed from Saturday to Sunday afternoons.(19) Steve will take the table tennis class on Monday evenings. The badminton course is for beginners(20), and this will be taken by Stella, who was last year’s under21 badminton winner, so you’ll be in good hands with her expert advice. The day of this course is still to be arranged, and it’s likely to be Tuesday. We’ll confirm the day by the end of this week.

With the attractive scenery and the possibility of a monster sighting, Loch Ness is one of those rare destinations that engages everyone’s interest.
Urquhart Castle
Captured by Edward Ⅰ in 1296, this prized castle changed hands between the Scots and the English on several occasions. Though ruined today, it’s still possible to climb the Grant Tower and visit the battlements and prison cells. A café and a visitor centre offer modern facilities in historic surroundings.
The Loch Ness Centre
For those who wish to digest the complete history of Loch Ness, this centre is particularly good at documenting the history of this mysterious stretch of water, including many attempts to search for Nessie, the infamous monster. It also holds curious artifacts such as the diving suit worn by Lloyd Scott when he undertook his underwater marathon.
The Clansman Centre
At the south end of Loch Ness, this attraction uncovers the truth surrounding 18thcentury family life. Audience members get the opportunity to put on Highland dress and there’s a demonstration on how weapons are used. The presentations take place within the recreated interior of a Highland house, adding atmosphere and authenticity(真实性).
South Loch Ness Trail
This 36-mile route invites hikers along the quieter south side of Loch Ness, passing through three villages, and taking in the Falls of Foyers. Walkers hike a mix of minor roads and forest tracks, with highlights including Suidhe Viewpoint (a mountainous view at 1,200 feet). If it sounds too easy-going, then consider the Loch Ness 360° Trail instead for a more challenging, 80-mile route.

When I was seven, the television in my home broke. My parents decided not to replace it. At the time I felt this was terrible, but now I know that it was, in fact, quite the opposite. Without nightly television shows to gnaw away at (吞噬) my time, I started to read. I found myself drawn into worlds far richer than any television could convey: Narnia, Middleearth, Earthsea, Redwall, Hogwarts. Every evening I experienced new adventures together with book characters.
As I grew older, I found one of the best ways to feed my desire for adventure was through travel. In 2007, I travelled to a place where people’s life was completely different from mine. There I saw children sleep under tarps(防水油布) and struggle to find a bite to eat. Many of them walked barefoot. I also saw older children care for their younger sisters and brothers, and that neighbours were selfless with their limited resources, sharing food and water for showering.
My experience with the children stayed with me long after I returned home. It forever changed the way I examined the world and eventually inspired the storyline of one of The Walled City’s characters, Jin—a homeless girl who sleeps under a tarp and sacrifices everything to search for her lost sister. There are similar things that tie us all together and go beyond language and culture. No mater where you go-in this world, or inside the world of fiction, you’ll find that all people share some of the deepest experiences: suffering and love, desperation and hope. Reading books and travelling to faraway places opened my eyes to this reality, and writing helped me make sense of it. It’s my hope that The Walled City will begin this cycle anew and somewhere, a reader will shut my book with a hunger in their heart, and start a passport stamp collection of their own.

A. Language and culture.
B. The world of fiction.
C. People’s similar experiences.
D. Reading and travelling.
根据第一段中的“When I was seven, the television in my home broke... I found myself drawn into worlds far richer than any television could convey: Narnia, Middleearth, Earthsea, Redwall, Hogwarts.(在我7岁的时候,我家的电视坏了。我的父母决定不再买新的。当时,我感到非常糟糕,但现在我知道这实际上是相反的。没有每晚的电视节目来消磨我的时间,我开始阅读。我发现自己被吸引进了远比电视更加丰富的世界:纳尼亚、中土世界、地海、红墙、霍格沃茨。)”可知,第一段主要介绍了作者是怎样爱上阅读的。故选D。
25. B 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Many of them walked barefoot. I also saw older children care for their younger sisters and brothers, and that neighbours were selfless with their limited resources, sharing food and water for showering.(他们中的许多人光着脚走路。我还看到大一点的孩子照顾他们的弟弟妹妹,邻居们在有限的资源下无私地分享食物和用于洗澡的水。)”可知,在第二段中作者所提及的地方,邻居们互相帮助,无私地分享自己的食物和用于洗澡的水,所以这是一个充满善意和爱的地方。故选B。
26. A 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“My experience with the children stayed with me long after I returned home. It forever changed the way I examined the world and eventually inspired the storyline of one of The Walled City’s characters, Jin—a homeless girl who sleeps under a tarp and sacrifices everything to search for her lost sister. (我和孩子们在一起的经历在我回家后很长一段时间一直伴随着我。它永远地改变了我观察世界的方式,并最终启发了《迷宫之城》中一个角色金的故事情节——一个无家可归的女孩,她睡在防水油布下,牺牲了一切来寻找她丢失的妹妹。)”可推知,在这次经历的影响下,作者回家之后开启了自己的创作生涯,创作了一本名为《迷宫之城》的书。故选A。
根据画线词前面的句子“There are similar things that tie us all together and go beyond language and culture. No matter where you go—in this world, or inside the world of fiction, you’ll find that all people share some of the deepest experiences: suffering and love, desperation and hope.(有一些相似的东西将我们所有人联系在一起,超越了语言和文化。

New research has revealed something amazing: it appears that plants can communicate.
It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant, say a bean plant, gets attacked by insects. The plant releases tiny amounts of chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning, or a call for help: “I’m being attacked!” When another bean plant detects the chemicals from its injured neighbour, it starts to release its own
different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others attract insects—the wasps(黄蜂)! The wasps kill the insects that are eating the bean plants. Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow crops without pesticides.
More surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate. People can’t hear these sounds, but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. Corn and chilli plants do this. They also “listen” to the noises from other plants. A chilli plant can tell if a neighbouring plant is helpful, or unfriendly. Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water, indicating drought is arriving.
Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can link nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. While the Internet is a worldwide network of computers linked by cables and satellites, the wood wide web is linked underground by fungi (真菌).This fungal network links the roots of different plants to each other. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other. For example, some pine trees can send food to smaller pine trees to help them grow. But just like our own Internet, the wood wide web has its own version of “cyber crime”. Plants can steal food
from each other, or spread poisons to attack other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will learn how to create a “firewall” to help prevent these attacks within the wood wide web.
Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other. Who knows? Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to “talk” with them ourselves.
( )28. What can we infer from Paragraphs 2 and 3?
A. A bean plant may release its own different chemicals to drive insects away.
B. A bean plant can only attract wasps to kill the harmful insects.
C. Scientists have learnt more about this plant warning system.
D. Most plants can make noises and listen to noises.
A
( )29. What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. The “wood wide web” is in some ways similar to the Internet we use.
B. The “wood wide web” has its own version of “cyber crime”.
C. Plants have an amazing system of communication that can nearly cover a forest.
D. Scientists will create a “firewall” to protect the wood wide web from attacks.
C
( )30. What is the author’s attitude to mastering the secret ways in which plants talk?
A. Worried. B. Uninterested.
C. Optimistic. D. Pessimistic.
( )31. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Secret Language of Plants
B. The Benefits of Plants’ Talking
C. How Plants Communicate with Each Other
D. How Plants Communicate with People
根据第二段中的“When another bean plant detects the chemicals from its injured neighbour, it starts to release its own different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away.(当另一株豆科植物检测到来自受伤邻居的化学物质时,它就会开始释放自己的不同的化学物质。其中一些化学物质会赶走昆虫。)”可知,豆类植物可能会释放自己的不同的化学物质来驱赶昆虫。故选A。
根据第四段中的“Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can link nearly every plant in a forest.(最令人惊讶的是,植物有一个惊人的交流系统,几乎可以连接森林中的每一种植物。)”
根据最后一段中的“Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to ’talk’ with them ourselves.(也许有一天,我们会对植物的交流有足够的了解,从而能够自己与它们’交谈’。)”
通读全文,尤其根据第一段“New research has revealed something amazing: it appears that plants can communicate.(新的研究揭示了一件惊人的事情:植物可以交流。)”

The streets of London are infamously colourful, and even more so now that some local authorities have decided to dress up pedestrian crossings in colours or other equally bright designs. Some of these “colourful crossings” are created by councils around the UK with more than just aesthetics(美学) in mind, focusing instead on preventing pedestrian casualties(伤亡人员).
Two cities in England that have just finished a pilot experiment are Liverpool and Hull. Before the experiment, the former had 99 adult pedestrian deaths or serious injuries per 100,000 people in 2019, making it the worst place in the UK that year, while in Hull 44 pedestrian casualties per 100,000 people were recorded.
“We call these colourful crossings a push because in an urban environment, pedestrians have a choice about where they cross the road,” says Dr.Holly Hope Smith, the consultant working on the two trials. “We’re trying to enhance a crossing that’s already there so that people are more likely to use it.”
While Dr.Holly Hope Smith said that there had been little in terms of international research into colourful crossings, in 2004, research from Australian academics concluded that coloured surfaces of crossings had a positive effect on pedestrian safety with regard to the number of crashes and the severity of injuries suffered by pedestrians. They recommended that they be applied in “busy” and “complex” pedestrian environments. More recently, a 2017 report by Better Bankside about artwork employed at crossings in London’s Southwark Street said, “Our work did make respondents use the crossing more, and 68% told us that the artwork made them experience more pleasure.”
Yet, bright colours aren’t for everyone. People suffering from autism(自闭症) have raised concerns over the nature of having several colours on a road, while guide dog owners have reported their assistance dogs being confused by the new road designs. “Colourful crossings can be really misleading for people with low vision and their guide dogs,” says Dr.Amy Kavanagh, a blind activist and campaigner. But Hope Smith doesn’t agree. “These crossings are placed to enhance existing pedestrian crossings. All the signals that are there for visually disadvantaged road users remain—the touch sensors, the audio signal for when the crossing is on—we haven’t touched them,” he says.
( )32. What do the figures in Paragraph 2 show?
A. Liverpool and Hull should try to improve their traffic system.
B. The populations of Liverpool and Hull had a significant decline.
C. Pedestrians in Liverpool and Hull suffered from road accidents.
D. The experiment in Liverpool and Hull was limited by many factors.
C
( )33. What does Dr.Holly Hope Smith try to do by using colourful crossings?
A. Comfort people suffering from autism.
B. Offer pedestrians more travelling choices.
C. Arouse people’s traffic safety awareness.
D. Encourage people to use crossings more.
D
( )34. What can we learn about colourful crossings around the UK?
A. They have met with conflicting opinions.
B. They have been supported by dog owners.
C. They need to be improved further by designers.
D. They have effectively reduced pedestrian casualties.
( )35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Can Colourful Crossings Give Us More Pleasure?
B. Will Colourful Crossings Make Our Streets Safer?
C. Why Are Colourful Crossings Used Around the UK?
D. How Can Colourful Crossings Influence Pedestrians?
A

根据第二段中的“Before the experiment, the former had 99 adult pedestrian deaths or serious injuries per 100,000 people in 2019, making it the worst place in the UK that year, while in Hull 44 pedestrian casualties per 100,000 people were recorded.(在实验之前,利物浦在2019年每10万人中有99名成年行人死亡或重伤,使其成为当年英国最糟糕的地方,而在赫尔,每10万人中有44名行人伤亡。)”
根据第三段中的“We’re trying to enhance a crossing that’s already there so that people are more likely to use it.(我们正在努力改善已经存在的十字路口,这样人们就更有可能使用十字路口。)”和第四段中的“Our work did make respondents use the crossing more, and 68% told us that the artwork made them experience more pleasure.(我们的工作确实让受访者更多地使用人行横道,68%的人告诉我们,艺术作品让他们体验到了更多的乐趣。)”
根据第四段中的 “While Dr. Holly Hope Smith said that... with regard to the number of crashes and the severity of injuries suffered by pedestrians.(Holly Hope Smith博士说,国际上对彩色人行横道的研究很少,但2004年,澳大利亚学者的研究得出结论,从交通事故的数量和行人受伤的严重程度来看,彩色人行横道表面对行人安全有积极影响。)”以及最后一段中的“People suffering from autism(自闭症) have raised concerns over the nature of having several colours on a road, while guide dog owners have reported their assistance dogs being confused by the new road designs.(自闭症患者对道路上的几种颜色表示担忧,而导盲犬的主人则表示,他们的导盲犬对新的道路设计感到困惑。)” 故选A。

Good morning, everyone! I feel delighted to share some of my views here. Being a better self, I think, means more than being excellent in studies but being an all-round person.
To be a better self, we should recognise ourselves correctly by knowing our strengths and weaknesses. Then, based on self recognition, we need to take action to enhance what we are good at and gain experience from our failures. It is also essential to improve our ability to communicate properly and overcome difficulties.
I strongly believe that a better self can definitely lead us to a better future and let’s make changes from now on. Thank you!
A Four-Legged Guardian Angel
Snow had just melted off the ground that April day at our house in Regina Beach, Saskatchewan. I had just cleaned up the pool in preparation for selling the house. The year before, I had lost my job with the provincial government, and now our financial situation was grim. In despair, I had finally put the house on the market, and a real estate agent
was due to show up later that day. Even worse, I would have to give up my beloved Great Dane(大丹犬), Brigitte, because I could no longer afford the cost of feeding it. The thought of losing the dog and our beautiful house was almost more than I could bear.
Deep in despair, I sat typing up résumés and cover letters. Out of the corner of my eye I could see my thirteen-month-old son, Forrest, as he lay on the carpet, playing near our big, gentle dog, Brigitte. It seemed as if Brigitte was always meant to be in this family and she turned out to be a perfect companion.
Brigitte came to our house on Christmas eve when the doorbell rang and I was sure some of my Christmas packages had arrived. I ran to the door and swung it open, but no one was there. I sensed something and looked down, only to find a beautiful Great Dane sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes. There was no way that she could have rung the doorbell by herself, was there? Perhaps, someone had found the puppy somewhere and left her there, and then rang the doorbell and ran away. They accurately guessed I would welcome an additional family member and take care of her.Thinking of these, I couldn’t help heaving a sigh and went straight back to work. However, I hadn’t typed more than two sentences when Brigitte began barking furiously and running back and forth to the sliding glass door overlooking our pool.
I raced to see what was happening and noticed that the sliding door was slightly open. Suddenly, I realised Forrest was nowhere to be seen. In panic, I opened the door and ran outside.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
One possible version:
There I was surprised to see Brigitte, who was terrified of water, dive into the pool. ___________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then to my horror, I caught sight of Forrest’s yellow pyjamas. Brigitte was bravely doing her best to keep him afloat by holding on to his pyjamas with her mouth. At the same time, she was desperately trying to swim to the shallow end. Only then did I realise that Forrest had somehow opened the door, wandered out and fallen into the pool. In a split second, I dove in, lifted my precious baby out and carried him inside. Hands shaking, I called 911 and we were rushed to hospital immediately, where the doctor kept him for observation for one night.
Finally, the doctor said Forrest was all right and could be released from hospital. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Back home, once Brigitte saw him, she barked with apparent joy and wouldn’t let Forrest out of her sight. In time she settled down, but remained dedicated to Forrest and followed him everywhere, concerned about his safety. Even when Forrest was asleep, Brigitte crammed herself under the crib, keeping a vigil. Our dog was indeed an angel, erasing any despair I might have had about losing our house. A house could always be replaced, but knowing we had each other around was the greatest blessing of all. I was grateful she was part of our lives, who I would never give up.
