The robin was hopping around on the ground. Mary was watching him when she saw  something on the earth. She picked it up. It was an old key. “The key to the secret garden!” she whispered excitedly. A. crazy B. kind - hearted C. polite D. clever D It was a cleaning day for the family. John and his mom were busy cleaning the house. Then  John’s mom noticed an old chair. That old chair was for John’s grandpa. “John, come and help me,” John’s mom said. “We’ll take the chair to the side of the roa The  rubbish truck (垃圾车) will come to   ▲    tomorrow.” When they tried to move the chair, John’s grandpa saw it and cried. “No! You can’t take my  chair.” “But it’s so old,” John’s mom replied. “We’ll buy you a new one.” “No,” he said, trying to  get his chair back. John’s mom finally gave up and left. The old man sat into his chair and closed his eyes. “Grandpa, why won’t you let us throw the chair?” John asked. “You don’t understand, John,” His grandpa said. “I sat in this chair when I asked your grandma to marry me. And I sat in this chairthe night your father was born.Many years later, I sat in this chair when the doctor told me that your grandma was badly ill. I was very sad, but the chair gave me comfort (安慰) and warmth.” The old  man’s voice changed when he thought of that unlucky day. “I understand.” John looked at his grandpa and said, “this is not just any old chair. It is more  like a friend.” “Yes,” he nodded. However, that night, when John and his grandpa were sleeping, John’s parents carried the chair outside. The next morning, John woke up and heard the sound of the rubbish truck. He quickly ran downstairs and found the snow - covered chair stood helplessly (无助地) at the side of the road.  The truck was going to pull it away. “Wait! Stop!”John shouted and rushed outside. The big noises from the truck suddenly stopped.He then ran back inside and cried, “Mom, you can’t throw out grandpa’s chair. It is like a true friend in his life!” Hearing this, John’s mom ran outside and carefully moved away the snow on the chair. She  carried it back with John. 1. D. Grandpa’s Old Chair. E How do you deal with your rubbish when you are outside? Do you sort (分类) rubbish before  throwing it away? When my children were younger, we used to walk a graveled trail (碎石小道) around the lake near our home.   ① One spring day my daughter and I noticed just how much rubbish was lying along the trail. So the next day we brought a big rubbish bag with us and started to pick up the rubbish along our way, slowly, step by step. ② There were pop cans (汽水罐), wrappers (包装纸) for candy bars,  plastic water bottles, empty chip bags, pieces of broken fishing line and even an old worn - out (破旧的) shoe. We stopped and picked up each one and even fished a few pieces of rubbish out of the  edge of the water. By the time we had circled the lake, the bag was nearly full. ③   We stopped before we headed home and took one last look at the lake as the sun set. It looked more beautiful than ever. I know that at times this world’s problems can seem overwhelming and you wonder what you can do to make a difference. But the truth is everything you do makes a difference! Every time you stop to pick up a single piece of rubbish, you make a difference in the world. Every smile you share makes a difference. Every kind word you say makes a difference. Every loving thought you think,  every hug you share, every flower you plant, every animal you save, everything you do, no matter  how small, makes a difference in this world.   ④ Therefore, make your difference today from doing things like picking up a piece of rubbish.   1. What did the writer and her daughter do around the lake that day? A. They just went for a walk. B. They picked up the rubbish. C. They sorted different kinds of rubbish. D. They looked for an old worn - out shoe. 2. What does the underlined word “overwhelming” mean? A. different B. difficult C. dangerous D. dark 3. Where can we put the sentence “Tired but happy, we put the bag in an empty rubbish bin.”? A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④ 4. What may be the best title for the passage? A. Sorting rubbish. B. World’s bad problems. C. Protecting the environment. D. Starting doing small good things. F Pets like dogs and cats are usually popular with people. If you keep a dog or a cat, do you  always turn on the radio or TV when you’re not in just because you don’t want your pet to be lonely?A study shows that around 40% of the British people with dogs would like to turn the radio and that32% would like to turn on the television. But do pets really like this? Sometimes dogs do respond (作出反应) to human music. A study shows that when there is  light music playing, many dogs seem to be quiet. When it comes to rock music, those dogs seem to be very excited, they seldom make response to popular music and human talk. For cats, they seldom respond to human music because their hearing spectrum (频谱) is  different from that of humans, so what they hear when they listen to our music is different from what we hear. Some studies show that cats respond to the sounds within their own hearing spectrum. Scientists once tried to see what would happen if they played “cat music” for the cats. They asked Professor (教授) David Teie to make special music for cats. And it showed that when they’re  playing it to 47 cats, some cats did respond to it. So you’d better play different music for your pets.Good news for cat lovers is that you can buy such special cat music online. David Teie once took part in the cat study and he wrote cat music for sale online. 1. Why do some people leave the radio or TV on for their pet? A. To do a study on pets. B. To stop it being noisy. C. To make it less lonely. D. To make it love music. 2. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about? A. Why dogs respond to some music. B. How to make dogs respond to music. C. How dogs respond to different music. D. What sounds dogs would like to hear. 3. What can we learn from the passage? A. Pets like to listen to the same music. B. Cats have little interest in human music. C. David Teie’s job is to sell things online. D. The cat music can make people excited. 4. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. How can we look after pets? B. What kind of music do dogs love? C. Where can we buy special cat music? D. Do dogs and cats like human music? 1 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
