Fourteen-year-old Harini Logan won the Scripps National Spelling Bee last Thursday, defeating 12-year-old Vikram Raju in a tie-breaker. It’s the first time the contest has ever been decided by a tie-breaking round of spelling.
A spelling bee is a contest where players take turns spelling words. Players who spell a word wrong are out of the contest. As the contest goes on, the words get more difficult. Normally, the contest ends when there’s only one player left who hasn’t made a mistake. Though the bee is mainly about spelling, since 2021 it has changed slightly to also focus on the meaning of the words. During parts of the contest, students were asked to choose the correct meaning of a word.
That caused trouble for Harini. She was asked about the meaning of the word “pullulation”. She said the word described the nesting of birds. The contest organizers had expected the answer the “swarming of bees”. Harini was removed from the contest. But soon she was back in—the judges double-checked and learned that Harini’s definition was also correct. One by one, the other students spelled a word wrong and got out. Finally, only Harini and Vikram were left.
The Scripps bee has been running for over 90 years. Many times it ended in a tie. As a result, the contest organizers changed the rules. They added a “spell-off” to the contest to make future ties much less likely. In the spell-off, Vikram and Harini each took turns trying to spell the words they were asked, but both made mistakes. At one point, Harini could have won by spelling the word “drimys” (a kind of plant) correctly. But she missed it.
That put the two into a super tie-breaking event, where they were each given 90 seconds to correctly spell as many words as they could. In 90 seconds, Vikram had spelled 15 words correctly. Harini had 21 correct spellings, making her the new winner.
4. What does the author want to show in Paragraph 2?
A. The rules of the contest. B. The awards of the contest.
C. The organization of the contest. D. The way to take part in the contest.
5. Why did the contest organizers change the rules?
A. To attract more teenagers. B. To avoid the result of a tie.
C. To make the contest fair. D. To reduce unexpected mistakes.
6. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. A close spelling contest was held online. B. The Scripps Spelling Bee changed its rules.
C. Many people won spots at a national contest. D. A teenager wins Spelling Bee in exciting tie-breaker.
7. What is the text?
A. A news report. B. A book review. C. A research paper. D. A class presentation.
A 5. B 6. D 7. A

根据第二段“A spelling bee is a contest where players take turns spelling words. During parts of the contest, students were asked to choose the correct meaning of a word.(拼字比赛是选手们轮流拼字的比赛。拼错一个单词的选手将退出比赛。随着比赛的进行,单词变得越来越难。通常情况下,当只剩下一名选手没有犯错时,比赛就结束了。尽管比赛主要关注拼写,但自2021年以来,它略有变化,也关注单词的含义。在部分比赛中,学生们被要求选择单词的正确含义。)”可知,本段主要讲述了拼字比赛的一般规则以及后来的变化。故选A。
根据第四段中的“As a result, the contest organizers changed the rules. They added a ‘spell-off’ to the contest to make future ties much less likely.(结果,比赛组织者改变了规则。他们在比赛中增加了一个‘拼字比赛’,以减少未来平局的可能性。)”可知,比赛组织者改变规则是为了避免平局的结果。故选B。
【6题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文可知,第一段中的“Fourteen-year-old Harini Logan won the Scripps National Spelling Bee last Thursday, defeating 12-year-old Vikram Raju in a tie-breaker.(上周四,14岁的Harini Logan在决胜局中击败12岁的Vikram Raju,赢得斯克里普斯全国拼字比赛。)”

After a heavy snowstorm, I ran outside excitedly to build a snowman. No matter how I rolled my snowball, it refused to grow. After resting for a while, I restarted the job. Then I noticed I had an audience—a prim-looking (古板的) couple with obvious disapproval. My face turned red as I tried to answer their unspoken question: Don’t you have anything better to do?
An adult playing by herself seems strange, but maybe it shouldn’t. New research suggests that modern adults have ignored their play instinct (本能). Most animals stop playing as adults. However, there are a handful of animals that never stop.
One possibility is that adult play is important and beneficial—a theory supported by a study. Researcher Camilla Cenni from the University of Lethbridge left some puzzle boxes for some monkeys to solve. To get the food inside, they had to drop a rock into the container. The monkeys that previously had dropped rocks for fun were more likely to solve the puzzle. This finding also suggests somewhere in our evolutionary history—a playful human invented stone tools. Even today, the urge to play accounts for some of humans’ greatest inventions. Adult play is also about preparing for the unexpected. And biologists found its most important function is improving relationships and helping individuals get along.
Adult play promotes inclusivity, cooperation and creativity—all qualities that we humans could use. Unfortunately, social norms hold back our urge to let loose. “Generally speaking, we like to do the things that are necessary for our survival,” says Peter Gray, a play researcher at Boston University, “Humans took one giant step away from fun when we started planting crops. Plowing (耕) fields is hard and boring. Then we invented factories and lost sight of play.”
With threats like climate change, it’s easy to get into seriousness. But we should understand the value of encouraging adult play. So next time I’m caught playing, I know what to say, “I’m playing for the benefit of all humankind. You’re welcome.”
8. Why did the author’s face turn red?
A. She was considered too old to play.
B. She had difficulty making a snowman.
C. She was ignored by a prim-looking couple.
D. She couldn’t answer the couple’s question.
9. What can be inferred about adult play from Paragraph 3?
A. It is the natural need of humans.
B. It can contribute to useful creations.
C. It has slowed down human evolution.
D. It is particularly noticeable in animals.
10. What got humans to lose the fun of playing according to Peter Gray?
A. The arrival of agriculture.
B. Modern science.
C Climate change.
D. The need to prepare for the unexpected.
11. What’s the main idea of this passage?
A. The ways adults can be more playful.
B. The ways to add more play to your grown-up life.
C. The reasons why adults need to make time for playtime.
D. The differences exist between human and animals’ play.
A 9. B 10. A 11. C
根据第一段“After a heavy snowstorm, I ran outside excitedly to build a snowman. No matter how I rolled my snowball, it refused to grow. After resting for a while, I restarted the job. Then I noticed I had an audience—a prim-looking (古板的) couple with obvious disapproval. My face turned red as I tried to answer their unspoken question: Don’t you have anything better to do?(一场暴风雪过后,我兴奋地跑到外面去堆雪人。 故选A。
根据第三段中“This finding also suggests somewhere in our evolutionary history—a playful human invented stone tools. Even today, the urge to play accounts for some of humans’ greatest inventions.(这一发现还表明,在我们人类进化史的某个阶段,一个爱玩的人发明了石器。即便到了今天,玩耍的冲动依然是人类诸多伟大发明背后的驱动力之一)”可推知,成年人玩耍有助于发明。故选B。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中Peter Gray所说的话“Humans took one giant step away from fun when we started planting crops. Plowing (耕) fields is hard and boring. Then we invented factories and lost sight of play.(当人类开始种植庄稼时,便与乐趣渐行渐远了一大步。耕田劳作既辛苦又乏味。后来,我们又发明了工厂,从此便将玩耍抛诸脑后)”可知,农业出现后,农耕辛苦又枯燥,让人们失去了玩的乐趣,故选A。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。 通读全文,尤其是第三段“This finding also suggests somewhere in our evolutionary history—a playful human invented stone tools. Even today, the urge to play accounts for some of humans’ greatest inventions. Adult play is also about preparing for the unexpected. And biologists found its most important function is improving relationships and helping individuals get along.(这一发现也表明,在我们人类进化史的某个阶段,一个爱玩的人发明了石器。即便到了今天,玩耍的冲动依然是人类诸多伟大发明背后的驱动力之一。成年人玩耍还关乎为意外情况做好准备。生物学家发现,玩耍最重要的功能是改善人际关系,帮助个体融洽相处)”可知,文章主要讲述了在现代社会中,人们常会对充满玩心的成年人持否定态度,但事实上,“玩”这一活动非常重要,可以帮助人们培养各种素质,从而能够更好地解决问题,由此可知。 C项“The reasons why adults need to make time for playtime.(为什么成年人需要腾出时间玩耍)”是文章的主旨,故选C。
D
Portia Kapraun has always seen unwelcome ads on Twitter, usually from major brands pitching (竭力推销) her expensive jewelry or vehicles that she, as a librarian in Indiana, could not afford. Ms. Kapraun was not interested. But she soon saw the ads again. And again. And again. “These feel like low-end ads,” she said. In a shaky advertising market in an uncertain economy, ads that few people want to see suddenly seem to be everywhere.
Advancements in digital advertising technology were meant to improve users’ experience. People interested in shoes are intended to get ads for sneakers and boots, not repeated pitches promoting gold investments. And the technology is supposed to remove misleading or dangerous pitches. But lately, on several platforms, the opposite seems to be happening for a variety of reasons, including a slowdown in the overall digital ad market. As numerous deep-pocketed markets have pulled back, and the softer market has led several digital platforms to lower their ad pricing, opportunities have opened up for less demanding advertisers.
Advertising experts agree that poor-quality ads appear to be increasing greatly. They point to a variety of potential causes: internal troubles at technology companies, weak content moderation (审核), and high-level advertisers seeking other choices. Then, there’s the economy: A recent survey of 43 multinational companies representing more than $44 billion in advertising spending found that nearly 30 percent planned to cut back on their marketing spending last year.
Other factors are also contributing to lower advertising quality. Social media advertising, once only practiced by specialists, is now easily available to anyone. Many of them are avoiding targeted ads—placements intended to reach specific audiences, usually at a higher cost -- in favor of a cheaper spray-and-pray (广撒网式的) approach online, hoping to catch the attention of gullible (容易受骗的) or bored shoppers. Major social media platforms are now like “a mall that used to be good”, Corey Richardson, vice president at a multicultural ad company, says. “But now there’s no longer a mall there —it’s just a place selling anything.”
12. What message does the author want to deliver in Portia Kapraun’s story?
A. Repeated ads have a strong power of persuasion.
B. Social media users often encounter unwanted ads.
C. Major brands usually prefer social media advertising.
D. An uncertain economy leads to lower levels of consumption.
13. What can be inferred about the “less demanding advertisers” mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. They are forced to exit the digital ad market.
B. They have benefited from advertising experts.
C. They work hard to improve their users’ experience.
D. They can now advertise at a more affordable price.
14. What is Corey Richardson’s attitude to major social media platforms?
A. Negative. B. Unclear. C. Favorable. D. Hopeful
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Where is social media advertising heading?
B. What is shaking up the online advertising market?
C. Why are you seeing so many bad digital ads now?
D. How are targeted ads impacting your-purchase decisions?
B 13. D 14. A 15. C
根据第一段中“Portia Kapraun has always seen unwelcome ads on Twitter, usually from major brands pitching (竭力推销) her expensive jewelry or vehicles that she, as a librarian in Indiana, could not afford. Ms. Kapraun was not interested. But she soon saw the ads again. And again. And again.
根据最后一段中“Many of them are avoiding targeted ads—placements intended to reach specific audiences, usually at a higher cost -- in favor of a cheaper spray-and-pray (广撒网式的) approach online, hoping to catch the attention of gullible (容易受骗的) or bored shoppers.(他们中的许多人都在避免针对特定受众的定向广告投放(通常成本较高),而倾向于采用更便宜的在线投放方式,希望吸引易受骗或无聊的购物者的注意。)”以及“Major social media platforms are now like “a mall that used to be good”, Corey Richardson, vice president at a multicultural ad company, says. “But now there’s no longer a mall there —it’s just a place selling anything.””(一家多元文化广告公司的副总裁Corey Richardson表示,主流社交媒体平台现在就像“一个曾经很好的购物中心”。“但现在那里已经没有购物中心了——只是一个卖东西的地方。”)”可知,如今的社交媒体平台倾向以更便宜的在线“广撒网式的”方式投放广告吸引吸引购物者的注意而非更高成本的定向投入广告,因此降低了广告的质量,因此Corey Richardson对当前社交媒体平台的态度是消极的。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第二段“But lately, on several platforms, the opposite seems to be happening for a variety of reasons, including a slowdown in the overall digital ad market. As numerous deep-pocketed markets have pulled back, and the softer market has led several digital platforms to lower their ad pricing, opportunities have opened up for less demanding advertisers.(但最近,在一些平台上,由于各种原因,包括整体数字广告市场的放缓,情况似乎正好相反。随着众多财力雄厚的市场收缩,以及市场疲软导致数家数字平台降低广告定价,机会为要求较低的广告商敞开了大门。)”,第三段“Advertising experts agree that poor-quality ads appear to be increasing greatly. They point to a variety of potential causes: internal troubles at technology companies, weak content moderation (审核), and high-level advertisers seeking other choices.(广告专家一致认为,低质量的广告似乎正在大幅增加。他们指出了各种各样的潜在原因:科技公司的内部问题,内容审核不力,以及高级广告商寻求其他选择。)”和第四段“Other factors are also contributing to lower advertising quality.(其他因素也导致广告质量下降。)” 因此C选项“Why are you seeing so many bad digital ads now?(为什么你现在看到这么多糟糕的数字广告?)”

____16____There is a hidden secret in the front wheel design of supermarket shopping carts — two of the four wheels are slightly tilted. This “caster” design prevents sudden turns during straight-line rolling but requires the user to continuously apply lateral pressure. Engineers have found that when the shopping cart is loaded with more than 23kg, this design can reduce side-flipping accidents by 37%.
You might not know that ____17____. Inverting fresh strawberries in a breathable cardboard box can extend their shelf life by three days. Experiments have shown that the mold growth rate on the strawberry surface in contact with the container is 2.4 times faster than that on the suspended surface, which is related to the difference in the density distribution of the fruit's epidermal wax layer.
____18____. The most durable key on a standard keyboard is actually the number “5” which can withstand an average of 15 million presses, while the space bar has a lifespan of only 3 million presses. This is because frequent use has prompted manufacturers to install titanium alloy supports inside the “5” key, a design that originated from a 1987 typewriter anti-jamming patent.
When heating food in a microwave, ____19____. Placing a cup of water in the center can increase the uniformity of heating by 62%. This trick is based on the principle of microwave standing waves — the dielectric constant of water can effectively balance the distribution of the electromagnetic field, avoiding cold and hot spots.
____20____. In fact, turning off the Wi-Fi router at night is more power-consuming. The instantaneous power during the reboot process is 18 times that of the standby state. The annual power consumption of continuous standby is equivalent to only five hours of reboot power consumption. This counterintuitive phenomenon is related to the charging and discharging characteristics of the power module’s capacitors.
A. The green indicator light of the router in standby mode consumes about 1.2 kWh per year.
B. Banana peels can effectively delay the ripening of other fruits.
C. The numeric keypad applied backlight technology earlier than the main keyboard area.
D. Inverting the storage of berries can reduce mold growth.
E. Placing metal utensils in the corner can speed up the heating process.
F. Pushing the shopping cart diagonally is more ergonomic.
G. Placing a cup of water in the center can optimize microwave heating.
F 17. D 18. C 19. G 20. A
下文“There is a hidden secret in the front wheel design of supermarket shopping carts — two of the four wheels are slightly tilted. This “caster” design prevents sudden turns during straight-line rolling but requires the user to continuously apply lateral pressure. Engineers have found that when the shopping cart is loaded with more than 23kg, this design can reduce side-flipping accidents by 37%.(超市购物车的前轮设计有一个隐藏的秘密——四个轮子中有两个是微微倾斜的。
下文“Inverting fresh strawberries in a breathable cardboard box can extend their shelf life by three days. Experiments have shown that the mold growth rate on the strawberry surface in contact with the container is 2.4 times faster than that on the suspended surface, which is related to the difference in the density distribution of the fruit's epidermal wax layer.(将新鲜草莓倒置在透气纸箱中可以延长其保质期三天。实验表明,与容器接触的草莓表面的霉菌生长速度是悬空表面的2.4倍,这与果实表皮蜡层密度分布的差异有关)”介绍了草莓倒置储存可延长保质期以及不同表面霉菌生长率的差异。空处应起到引出草莓倒置储存这一内容的作用。D项“倒置储存浆果可以减少霉菌生长”符合语境,直接对应后文关于草莓倒置储存的内容,该项中的“Inverting the storage of berries”和下文中的“Inverting fresh strawberries in a breathable cardboard box”先呼应。故选D。

____16____There is a hidden secret in the front wheel design of supermarket shopping carts — two of the four wheels are slightly tilted. This “caster” design prevents sudden turns during straight-line rolling but requires the user to continuously apply lateral pressure. Engineers have found that when the shopping cart is loaded with more than 23kg this design can reduce side-flipping accidents by 37%.
