Passage A(英国国家健身日)
National Fitness Day is the most active day of the year in the UK, when people of all ages and backgrounds come together to celebrate the fun of fitness. It brings the nation together to explain why it's so good to move, highlighting the role that physical activity plays in helping us lead healthier and happier lives.
Physical inactivity has been listed as a leading cause of illnesses. However, according to a report by ukactive, adults in the UK spend eight times longer watching TV than exercising. That's why National Fitness Day wants to open a national conversation about the advantages of physical activity, both to the individual and to society as a whole.
Being more active helps improve our physical health. It is also good for our mental health. Held yearly during the European Week of Sport (taking place every year from September 23 to September 30), National Fitness Day made more than four million people active on the day last year, from school classes to workplaces across the UK.
In 2020, thousands of clubs, parks, sports centers and gyms will open their doors to welcome everyone to get active. Across the UK, schools and communities will also celebrate the day by holding their own events and activities to get the nation moving. Of course, National Fitness Day isn't just about one day.
It brings the nation together to explain why it's so good to move, highlighting the role that physical activity plays in helping us lead healthier and happier lives.
分析:主句结构:主语"It" + 谓语"brings" + 宾语"the nation" + 目的状语"to explain..." 宾语从句:"why it's so good to move"作"explain"的宾语;现在分词短语:"highlighting..."作伴随状语,补充说明主句动作;定语从句:"that physical activity plays"修饰"the role";介词短语:"in helping us..."
Passage B(黑色星期五)
The fourth Friday in November is super special, even more exciting than summer holidays or birthdays. Why? Because it’s Black Friday, one of the busiest shopping days when you can find amazing deals on things you love. But what is Black Friday, and why is it so much fun?
It began in the US on the Friday after American Thanksgiving, which falls on the fourth Thursday in November. The first people to use “Black Friday” were the Philadelphia (费城) police in the 1960s. On the day large numbers of people traveled there for Christmas shopping as well as an annual Army-Navy football game. The day was “black” because the police couldn’t take a day off after Thanksgiving, and instead had to work extra hard to control the crowds. It was in Philadelphia that stores first began to use this Friday as a good day for shopping, with some trying to call it “Big Friday”. But later the name “Black Friday” was widely used among people. In the end of the 1980s, it became an important shopping day across the US and, in time, around the world!
While in the past, videos would show crowds of people running into shops and fighting for the best prices, a lot of the buying now takes place online. Many companies now even begin their sales long before Black Friday itself, starting as early as the beginning of November, meaning there’s no need to line up as people did before.
Whether in stores or online, enjoy your Black Friday adventure to find great deals and have fun!
Task 1: Fill in the chart according to the passage. Fill in each blank with no more than 3 words.
1. ________
2. ________
3. ________
4. ________
5. ________
Task II: Answer the following questions.
6. When did “Black Friday” become an important shopping day across the US?

7. How many ways of enjoying Black Friday adventure are mentioned in the passage?

8. Do you prefer shopping in the stores to shopping online? Why?

Because it’s Black Friday, one of the busiest shopping days when you can find amazing deals on things you love."
Because it’s Black Friday"(因为这是黑色星期五)—— 原因状语从句。同位语:"one of the busiest shopping days"(最繁忙的购物日之一)—— 补充说明 Black Friday 的性质。定语从句:"when you can find amazing deals on things you love"(在这天你可以找到心仪商品的超值优惠)—— when 引导的定语从句,修饰 "shopping days"。
例句 ① Halloween is a fun festival when people dress up in costumes.(万圣节是一个人们会装扮的节日。)
例句 ② This is the book that I recommended to you.(这就是我向你推荐的那本书。)

. In the UK, Bonfire Night is the anniversary of a plan to kill the king in 1605. At that time, King James I treated Catholic people badly because they had a different religion from him. Life was very unfair and dangerous for Catholic people. A group of men were so unhappy about this that they decided to try to kill the king when he was inside the Parliament building on 5 November 1605.
The men put lots of gunpowder under the Parliament building. One man, called Guy Fawkes, stayed with the gunpowder, ready to make it explode when the king arrived. But the king found out about the plan, and Guy Fawkes was caught. Later, he was executed.
After Guy Fawkes was caught, everybody was allowed to have a big fire (a bonfire), to celebrate that the plan didn’t happen and the king didn’t die. And so, 5 November became Bonfire Night, and it’s celebrated every year.
Lots of towns organise a big bonfire and a fireworks display. They build a very big fire, usually in a big, open park, and they make a model of a man that looks like Guy Fawkes. This model is called a “guy”. Then they put the guy on top of the fire. Lots of people go out in the evening to watch the fire and the fireworks. They can look amazing!
There is also a special poem about Bonfire Night, which many children learn and say:
Remember, remember the fifth of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.
In the UK, it’s usually very cold in the evenings in November, so people like to eat hot food while they watch the bonfire and fireworks. Things like baked potatoes, sausages and burgers are very popular, as well as toffee apples—an apple on a stick, covered in sweet, sticky toffee.

Fill in each blank with no more than 3 words.
