At noon, just as I was leaving my friend’s office, it suddenly struck me that I had no idea where I had parked my car. I almost wanted to go up to a policeman and tell him that I had lost a small green car somewhere. Walking down street after street, I examined each car closely and was very happy to see a small green car just behind an old car. But how disappointed that I was to discover that, though the car was exactly like my own, it belonged to someone else. Feeling quite tired, I went off for lunch. Some time later, I left the restaurant and walked down the street. Turning the corner, I nearly jumped for joy. My car was right in front of me and there was no problem this time. To tell the truth, driving in crowded cities is far from being a pleasure, and it is much easier to walk than to drive.

Jacky Hunt-Broers ma, who lost one leg to cancer, is seeking to break a world record by completing 102 marathon runs. She set her goal in mid-January. And since then, she has been running the distance of a marathon. Most of the time, she averages just over five hours to complete a run. If she keeps successfully completing marathon runs every day, she will reach her goal by April 28.
Until five years ago, she was not very active. But then she looked into running and decided to give it a try. The sport ended up being quite costly. Currently, she runs on an artificial leg made of a strong, light material known as carbon fiber. The material, which is designed specially for running, costs about $10, 000.
But Jacky says her investment has been well worth it. The biggest struggle used to be that she had to admit part of her body was gone. “Running really changed my life,” she said. “It helped me accept myself as an amputee (截肢者). It gave me a sense of freedom. I fell in love with the process of pushing my body further just to see what I could do.”
However, she has faced both physical and mental difficulties during her record-breaking attempt. On one recent day, Jacky said she felt like giving up at 24 kilometers and began to cry. “I had a total emotional breakdown. I was like, ‘I just can’t do this.’” she said.
Jacky is documenting her progress online and has also gained a large social media following. As she nears the end of her goal, Jacky is hoping to inspire a single thought in others. She tells people, “You’re stronger than you think and you’re able to do so much more.”
24. What is Jacky’s goal according to paragraph 1?
A. To defeat a deadly disease. B. To break her 5-hour record.
C. To be a professional runner. D. To finish 102 marathon runs.

A. Difficult but rewarding. B. Interesting but challenging.
C. Enjoyable and eye-opening. D. Stressful and time-consuming.
26. Why does Jacky record her running online?

A young Dutch inventor is widening his effort to clean up floating (浮动的) plastic from the Pacific Ocean. He has developed a floating device (设备) to trap plastic waste moving ioto rivers before it reaches the oceans.
Bogan Slat was just 18 years old when he invented a system for catching waste in the ocean. He also founded an environmental group called The ocean cleanup. Its purpose is to develop the system. In 2019, Slat showed the next step: a floating device called Interceptor. It removes pastie out of rivers. The device is powered by energy from the sun. “The 1,000 rivers are responsible: for shout 80% of plastic going into the world’s oceans,” said Slat. Three of the machines have already been used. Each machine costs about $775,600, but the cost might drop as production increases.
Since they were used, the machines have been doing very well, collecting the plastic bottles and all the rubbish in the rivers. According to Slat, it is necessary to close “the tap”, which means preventing more plastic from reaching the oceans in the first place. He wanted to clean them all in the next five years. “This is not going to be easy, but if we do get this done, we could truly make our oceans clean again,” said seal.
The device is designed to be safe in rivers. Its nose is shaped to change directions to keep it away from larger floating things. It works by guiding plastic waste into an opening in the front of the device. The waste is then called inside the machine: where it is dropped into containers. The device sends a text message to local operators that can come and empty it when it is full.
28. What can we know about interceptor?
A. It is being under test. B. It can help sort waste.
C. It needs solar power to work. D. It is mainly used in the deans.
29. What does “the tap” refer to in paragraph 3?
A. The rivers. B. The machines. C. The oceans. D. The waste.
30. What’s the function of the device’s nose?
A. To empty the waste. B. To serve as containers.
C. To ensure the device’s safety. D. To send operators text messages.
31. Where is the text most likely from?
A. A diary. B. A guidebook. C. A novel. D. A magazine.
C 29. A 30. C 31. D

Life can be so wonderful, full of adventure and joy. It can also be full of challenges, setbacks and heartbreaks. Whatever our circumstances, we generally still have dreams, hopes and desires—that little something more we want for ourselves and our loved ones. Yet knowing we can have more can also create a problem, because when we go to change the way we do things, up come the old patterns and pitfalls that stopped us from seeking what we wanted in the first place.
This tension between what we feel we can have and "what were seemingly able to have is the niggling suffering, the anxiety we feel. This is where we usually think it's easier to just give up. But we're never meant to let go of the part of us that knows we can have more. The intelligence behind that knowing is us—the real us. It's the part that believes in life and its possibilities. If you drop that, you begin to feel a little "dead" inside because you're dropping "you".
So, if we have this capability but somehow life seems to keep us stuck, how do we break these patterns?
Decide on a new course and make one decision at a time. This is good advice for a new adventure or just getting through today's challenges.
While, deep down, we know we can do it, our mind—or the minds of those close to us—usually says we can't.
That isn't a reason to stop, it's just the mind, that little man or woman on your shoulder, trying to talk you out of something again. It has done it many times before. It's all about starting simple and doing it now.
Decide and act before overthinking. When you do this you may feel a little, or large, release from the jail of your mind and you'll be on your way.
32. It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that we should .
A. slow down and live a simple life
B. be careful when we choose to change
C. stick to our dreams under any circumstances
D. be content with what we already have
33. What is the key to breaking the old patterns?
A. To focus on every detail.
B. To decide and take immediate action.
C. To listen to those close to us.
D. To think twice before we act.
34. Which of the following best explains the underlined part in the last paragraph?
A. Escape from your punishment
B. Realization of your dreams.
C. Freedom from your tension.
D. Reduction of your expectations.
35. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. It's easier than we think to get what we want.
B. It's important to learn to accept sufferings in life.
C. It's impractical to change our way of thinking.
D. It's harder than we expect to follow a new course.
C 33. B 34. C 35. A

Decide on a new course and make one decision at a time.

故选A项。

Ways to Boost Your Self-Control
Contrary to popular belief, self-control does not come along by denying yourself something or being “strict” with yourself. It is about loving yourself and developing new habits. ____36____This is how you get there:
Set clear goals so when it comes down to it, you can think first, act later. When you have knowledge that a greater reward is at stake (得失难料), you are going to have an easier time letting go of immediate satisfaction. Prioritize your list according to what you want to achieve in the future. ____37____
Motivate yourself to win and remember that life doesn’t happen to you, it happens for you. Anxiety arises from the belief that you are not in control of your life circumstances but are a victim of them. ____38____ That will set the stage for you to regain your power and access your inner motivation to win and achieve.
Know your triggers (诱因) and control the stress response. Certain situations, people or even foods will cause your stress response to be triggered. Your job is to pay attention. ____39____It could be sleep deprivation, or it could be a tendency to feel overly criticized by your boss. By knowing your triggers, you can either avoid them or develop ways to deal with them.
____40____ Either enlist friends or family members to join you or ask for their support to remind you of your long-term goals. The key here is that no one is allowed to criticize you or cause you to feel guilt or shame. Instead, they are to remind you to love yourself and help you get back on track when you slip up.

本段第一句“Set clear goals so when it comes down to it, you can think first, act later. (设定清晰的目标,这样当你面临选择时,就能先思考、再行动。)”表明,本段写根据目标先思考、后行动有助于进行自我控制,G项“遵循这一过程,你会在冲动之前三思而后行。”中所说的“这一过程”即为前文提到的“设定清晰的目标,先思考、再行动”。同时空处位于本段最后,G项正是对本段的总结,遵循这一过程,可以避免冲动。故选G项。
【38题详解】
前文“Anxiety arises from the belief that you are not in control of your life circumstances but are a victim of them. (焦虑源于你认为自己无法掌控生活中的境遇,而是成为它们的受害者。)”指出焦虑的根源,后文“That will set the stage for you to regain your power and access your inner motivation to win and achieve. (这种认知会为你重获力量并激发你内心追求胜利和成就的动力奠定基础。)”指出按本空处所说的内容做会带来什么好处,这表明本空处应是一句告诉人们如何摆脱受害者心态的具体做法。D项“改变你的思维模式,成为自己生活的胜利者。”能够衔接前后文,且其中的victor一词与前文中的victim一词形成呼应。故选D项。
【39题详解】
前文“Your job is to pay attention. (你要做的就是引起注意。)”及后文“It could be sleep deprivation, or it could be a tendency to feel overly criticized by your boss. (它可能是睡眠不足,或你觉得被老板过度批评。)”说明,空处需要一句话既能表明需要引起注意的具体内容是什么,也就是使人们不能很好地进行自我控制的因素是什么,又能概括“睡眠不足”、“觉得被老板过度批评”这两个例子的共同特点。B项“是谁、或是什么让你感觉情绪化?”满足这一要求,能承上启下。故选B项。
【40题详解】
后文“Either enlist friends or family members to join you or ask for their support to remind you of your long-term goals. (你可以邀请朋友或家人加入你,或者请求他们的支持,让他们提醒你长期目标。)”提到周围的人这个因素在自我控制中的重要作用。A项“找一些可靠的伙伴。”直接点明人这个因素,起到引领全段的作用。故选A项。

故填that。

故填what。
故填to strengthen。
“eco-therapy won’t cure everything”和“it is still an option for therapists to use”之间是转折关系,所以用并列连词but连接。故填but。

Last week we had a class discussion about whether humans should continue ocean exploration.
Some students thought we should keep exploring. They said the ocean has rich resources, like energy and minerals, which can solve resource shortages. It also helps us understand climate change better.
However, others disagreed. They worried exploration might pollute the ocean and harm marine life. It could also cost too much money.

David is a 22-year-old man. Not having received a college education, he found it difficult to find a job. He worked at a small company and wasn’t paid well. He thought life was unfair and often complained.
One day, his boss asked him to go to his office. To his sadness, he was told he didn’t need to come to work again.
That day, David didn’t go straight back to the small apartment he shared with another man. He wanted to find a quiet place and sit there quietly for some time. Having lost his job, he had no idea what to do.
He walked and walked. Finally he stopped in front of a beautiful house. The house had a very big garden behind it. He saw an old man sitting in the garden.
“The old man must be a millionaire,” thought David. “How I wish I were him! If I were him, I wouldn’t have to work and I’d have a large amount of money. I would be the happiest man in the whole world.
Thinking how poor he was, David was even sadder. He hurriedly walked forward and found a place and sat there quietly.
Finally, he became hungry and decided to go back home. On his way back home, he passed the old man’s house again. This time the man was sitting in his front yard. When David passed by him, he noticed that the old man was looking at him. The old man looked as if he admired him very much. David was confused. Why would such a rich man admire him? He was so poor while he was so rich.
Finally, David decided to have a talk with the old man. So he stopped and walked to the old man.
”Hello,“ he said.
”Hello,“ said the old man.
Then they started talking. David told the old man he really admired him.
”You have such a beautiful house. You’re so rich! How I wish I were you!“ said David.
Hearing that, the old man smiled and said, ” And I admire you, too! I wish I were you! If I were you, I’d still enjoy my youth. Now I’m so old. Wealth doesn’t mean much to me!“
Paragraph 1 :
What the old man said struck David.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
David stopped complaining about his life.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
What the old man said struck David. He suddenly realized that wealth wouldn’t really mean much if one was already so old. What the old man really wanted was what he still enjoyed his youth. It was the most valuable thing he had. He realized that he was still young and everything was possible for him. David looked at the old man again and this time he no longer admired him. He knew he still had chance to become rich. But the old man could never become young again.
Paragraph 2:
David stopped complaining about his life. Instead, he decided to make a change. Later he found work again. This time he worked hard and tried his best to learn new things in his free time. He even went to attend a course at a night school. Two years later, he found better work. And some years later, he started his own business. Finally, he became rich. But he knew that wealth wasn’t the most important in his life. He wanted to live his life to its fullest.

Chinese poetry through the guqin:
a practical tool to learn Chinese language and culture
Confucius said: “To educate somebody, you should start with poetry, and finish with music”. The North American Guqin Association (NAGA) has developed a new class series that will combine (融合) poetry and music with guqin study and aims to deepen the appreciation of Chinese poetry and guqin culture through the exploration of guqin songs.
Course description

28 What can we know about interceptor?
C. A novel. D. A magazine.

C Freedom from your tension.
D. Reduction of your expectations.
35. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. It's easier than we think to get what we want.
B. It's important to learn to accept sufferings in life.
C. It's impractical to change our way of thinking.
D. It's harder than we expect to follow a new course.

”Hello“ said the old man.
