Hawaii is ready to hike a tax imposed (征税) on travelers staying in hotels, vacation rentals and other short-term accommodations and apply the new money for programs to cope with a warming planet. This will raise the total tax rate to nearly 19%, with the state and counties also imposing a combined 4.712%tax. The measure is expected to generate $100 million.
The funds will be used for projects like adding sand to broken beaches, protecting coral reefs, and removing wildfire-fueling grasses. Josh Green, who supports the bill, believes that the tax will help prevent future disasters like the Maui wildfire, which caused a 13 billion loss and claimed 102 lives. He argues that Hawaii’s 10 million annual visitors should contribute to protecting the environment.
Jerry Gibson, president of the Hawaii Hotel Alliance, said the hotel industry was pleased Hawaii didn’t adopt a higher increase that was initially suggested. “I don’t think that there’s anybody in the tourism industry that says, Well, let’s go out and tax more. No one wants to see that,” Gibson said. “But our home needs money to beautify Hawaii’s environment, and it will be worth it.”
Hawaii has long struggled to pay for the vast environmental and conservation needs. Hawaii had previously considered requiring tourists to pay for a license to visit it but this idea was rejected. Boosting this tax is their compromise (折中) solution, one made more urgent by the Maui wildfires.
There is a$561 million shortfall in Hawaii’s conservation funding needs. The tax increase won’t fully cover the gap, but Hawaii plans to issue bonds to ensure sufficient funds. Kawika Riley, an officer of Hawaii, pointed to the Hawaiian saying, “A stranger only for a day,” to explain the new tax. It means that a visitor should help with the work after the first day of being a guest. “Nobody is saying that literally our visitors have to come here and start working for us. But what we are saying is that it’s crucial to be part of the solution,” Riley said.
8. What is the purpose of Hawaii’s plan to increase tax on accommodation?
A. To boost tourism income. B. To address environmental challenges.
C. To punish illegal tourists. D. To solve people’s livelihood problems
9. How does the hotel industry respond to the increasing tax?
A. Unsure of the long-term benefits. B. Relieved by the current tax increase
C. Eager for the arrival of the tax increase D. Concerned about the tourism impact.
10. What makes the tax increase more urgent?
A. The impact of the natural disaster. B. The rejection of the license policy.
C. The decline in national support. D. The increase in local tourism.
11. What is Riley’s attitude to the tax increase?
A. Intolerant. B. Skeptical. C. Approving. D. Objective.

Sleep is one of the most fundamental building blocks of life. All animals sleep from dogs to humans. It has long been known that sleep also plays a significant role in physical and emotional health. But nobody might think that memory and learning are acquired while one is sleeping. However, in fact, the researchers from the University of South Australia have recently found that just the reverse is true.
The researchers conducted an experiment with 35 native English speakers. These 35 participants were in the process of learning a mini-language called Mini Pinyan. Half of the students learned the language in the morning and then went on with their days, while the other half studied in the evening and then slept at the lab so that the researchers could record their brainwaves. Both groups were tested on their knowledge of Mini Pinyan in the morning, and the group that had slept soon after they studied performed significantly better than those who had not.
According to previous research, there are two phases that the brain cycles through when sleeping. The first is called REM sleep. During this phase, which usually takes place about an hour and a half after a person has fallen asleep, brain activity peaks and shows levels similar to when that person is awake. This is when dreams occur. In non-REM sleep, brain activity is low.
“Sleep is not just restful; it’s an active, transformative state for the brain,” Dr. Scott Cousins, a researcher of the study, said. They found that the improvements were linked to two types of brainwaves — slow oscillations and sleep spindles, which become coupled during non-REM sleep. The coupling of these brainwaves appears to help the transfer of information from the hippocampus to the cortex (大脑皮层), which is where long-term memory is stored.
This is no doubt good news for anyone who wants to study a foreign language. What’s more, the implications of this study could also help improve the lives of those with language-related impairments. Now there is one more reason to get a good night’s sleep.
12. What does the underlined word “reverse” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Descriptive. B. Innovative. C. Opposite. D. Prospective.
13. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The setup and result of the experiment.
B. Health benefits of sleeping in the evening.
C. The relationship between brainwaves and memory.
D. Differences between morning and evening learning styles.
14. What is a key characteristic of REM sleep?
A. Absence of dreams. B. High brain activity.
C. Enhancing of memory. D. Frequent information communication.
15. Why did the participants studying before sleeping perform better?
A. Morning study was faced with more distractions.
B. Their cortex stored memories more efficiently while asleep.
C. Physical rest gained from sleep provided them with more energy.
D. Non-REM sleep brainwaves helped strengthen long-term memory.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. D

However, in fact, the researchers from the University of South Australia have recently found that just the reverse is true.
根据第二段“The researchers conducted an experiment with 35 native English speakers. These 35 participants were in the process of learning a mini-language called Mini Pinyan. Half of the students learned the language in the morning and then went on with their days, while the other half studied in the evening and then slept at the lab so that the researchers could record their brainwaves. (研究人员对 35 名以英语为母语的人进行了一项实验。这 35 名参与者正在学习一种名为 Mini Pinyan 的迷你语言。一半的学生在早上学习这种语言,然后继续他们的日常活动,而另一半在晚上学习,然后在实验室睡觉,以便研究人员记录他们的脑电波。)” 介绍了实验的设置。以及“Both groups were tested on their knowledge of Mini Pinyan in the morning, and the group that had slept soon after they studied performed significantly better than those who had not. (两组都在早上测试了他们对 Mini Pinyan 的知识,学习后不久就睡觉的那组表现明显好于没有睡觉的那组。)” 说明了实验结果。所以第二段主要关于实验的设置和结果。故选A。

Ethan, a 15-year-old boy from a small village surrounded by green hills, loved playing the guitar more than anything else. Every evening, when the sun turned his room golden, he would sit on the floor with his loved guitar. His fingers moved quickly over the strings, creating music that sounded like the wind in the trees or birds singing. Villagers often stopped outside his house to listen, saying things like “He’s amazing!” But Ethan didn’t believe them. “What if my music is only good for this tiny place?” he thought, staring at the scratches on his guitar.
One autumn day, a bright poster on the village board caught his eye. “Annual Talent Show!” it said, with a picture of a shiny trophy (奖杯). The prize was a chance to play at the big county fair. Ethan’s heart raced. For days, he walked around the poster, his hands deep in his pockets. He imagined people clapping, but also heard voices in his head, “What if I play the wrong notes? What if they think I’m just a nobody?” He touched the guitar’s worn edges, remembering all the hours he’d practiced.
His grandfather, a gray-haired man with kind eyes, noticed Ethan’s worry. One evening, as the sky turned orange, he said, “Let’s take a walk.” They went to their favorite oak tree. Sitting on a rock, the old man said, “When I was young, I wanted to be a painter.” He told Ethan how he once visited an old artist’s studio. “The artist asked me to paint publicly. I was so scared, and I almost ran away.”
Ethan leaned closer, eager to know more. “But then,” his grandfather added, “the artist told me, ‘Don’t think about others. Just paint what you feel.’” He pretended to hold a brush. “I painted a wild ocean-messy waves, crooked rocks. When I finished, people didn’t care about mistakes. They felt the storm.” He patted Ethan’s hand. “Your music doesn’t need to be perfect. It needs to be real.” Ethan decided to sign up. A few days later, the day of Annual Talent Show finally arrived.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Backstage, Ethan grasped his guitar, palms sweating. His heart beat so fast that he could barely hear the crowd cheering. Suddenly, he remembered his grandfather’s words, “Just play what you feel.” Taking a deep breath, he stepped onto the stage. The bright lights blinded him for a moment, but as his fingers touched the strings, the music flowed out like a river. At first, his hands shook, but soon he closed his eyes and lost himself in music. When he finished, the audience clapped wildly. Although Ethan performed very well, the grand prize went to someone else.
However, Ethan didn’t mind who got the grand prize. “Maybe real success is about courage, not winning,” he thought to himself. Sunlight streamed through the window, glowing on Ethan’s guitar. Outside, a group of kids stopped to listen. One boy pretended to play an air guitar, copying Ethan’s moves while a girl tapped rhythmically on a wooden stick. Nearby, elderly villagers paused their chores, singing along to his music. Laughing, Ethan waved at them. He kept playing, not for prizes or praise, but for the joy it brought. As the music floated through the village, he knew his grandfather was right — true art comes from the heart.

Hawaii had previously considered requiring tourists to pay for a license to visit it, but this idea was rejected.

Sleep is one of the most fundamental building blocks of life. All animals sleep, from dogs to humans.
