A good shower can relax not only your body but also your mind, unleashing (
streams of consciousness(意识流)and creativity..
Research shows that what is known as the "shower effect"also can occur outside the
shower, and many of our best thoughts don't happen at work or school-but occur while
going about our days with ideas incubating()in the background.
In a study,98 professional writers and 87 physicists recorded their most ereative ideas
each day,as well as what they were doing and thinking when it struck them. While most of
the ideas occurred at work,20 percent of their most meaningful ideas came while doing
something else-washing dishes or taking a shower.Notably, the ideas the writers and
physicists had away from their jobs were self-assessed to be just as creative and important
as the ones they had at work.
高二级英语试题第6页(共12页)
However, the shower effect on creativity is the product of mind-wandering,where
your thoughts are anywhere but on the task at hand.Historically, researchers focused on the
negative effects of mind-wandering,which can disrupt (performance and have been
associated with unhappiness. But the nature of the mind-wandering matters.
In another study, over 300 university students were first asked to come up with as
many novel uses as possible for ordinary objects such as a brick or paper clip (in
90 seconds. This is known as an alternative use task, which tests creativity. The students
then watched a boring video. The activity gave time for the students'ideas to incubate and
for their minds to wander. When the students were tested again, their mind-wandering led
to more creative ideas.
An activity such as taking a shower or a walk(or watching a romantic comedy video)
"takes some of your attention so that they can influence your thoughts, but doesn't take all
of it so that you pay no attention to these creative ideas that are incubating in the
background"said Zachary Irving, author of the study.
28.What do we know about the shower effect?
A.It requires focused attention.
B.'It fails to work outside the shower.
C.It enables people to have innovative ideas unconsciously.
D.It is the main cause of people's poor performance at work
29.How did the researchers conduct the study among writers and physicists?
A.They assessed their ideas at work.
B.They asked them to record their creative ideas.
C.They tested their creativity after they took a shower.
D.They required them to use an ordinary object creatively.
.30.What does the study among university students show?
AMind-wandering can disrupt performance.
B.People's thoughts are anywhere but on the task at hand.
C.Free-flowing thoughts in moderate task boost creativity.
D.Mind-wandering has been associated with unhappiness.
31.What is the best title for the text?
A.Why does the mind wander?
B.Why do we get our best ideas in the shower?
G.How can you become a more creative person?
D.How may your shower routine affect your health?

shared his experiences as a teacher, which inspired me to value knowledge and perseverance.
Seeing their smiles made me realize how small actions can bring great joy.

I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs.Bartlett.My heart pounded as I hesitantly
explained my disappointment and asked if there had been a mistake in the group assignment. With a
calm smile and eyes full of understanding,Mrs.Bartlett assured me that her decision was deliberate,
emphasizing that true leamning often begins when one steps out of their comfort zone."Sometimes,"
she said,"the students you least expect to connect with can teach you the most about life, empathy,
and creativity."Although reluctant at first,I realized that her insightful words challenged me to
reconsider my narrow view of friendship and potential.
Halfway through the week,I felt myself enjoying the company of these three misfits. As we
gathered after school in a cozy corner of the library, each of us contributed unique ideas and
talents-Mauro's quiet nature,Juliette's inventive perspectives,and Rachel's thoughtful
humor-combining together to enrich our project. While working on our poster, which described
not only world history but also our diverse experiences,I began to see that Mrs.Bartlett's
unconventional grouping was a masterstroke of teaching.I was fortunate to be given the
opportunity to view them in a new light. The project progressed smoothly thanks to our joint efforts.
Mrs.Bartlett awarded us an A for the assignment-a grade that truly belonged to her,as she was the
one who deserved it most.
