Look around, and you will see people busy on their cellphones. Cellphones do make our lives easier. But have you ever thought about what they mean to your eyes?
According to a study, half of British people own cellphones and they spend an average of two hours a day using them. There has been a 35% increase in the number of people in the UK who suffer from shortsightedness (近视) since cellphones were introduced in 1997.
Staring at cellphones for a long time gives you dry eyes. When you look at something in the distance, your eyes automatically blink (自动眨眼) a certain number of times. However, when you look at things closer to your face, the blinking slows down. This reduces the amount of tears and causes discomfort in your eyes. Another bad habit is using cellphones in dark rooms before going to sleep. If you look at bright screen in the dark, too much light enters your eyes. This can do harm to your eyes and cause a disease called glaucoma (青光眼).
While you’ re probably not going to stop using your cellphone, there are a few things you can do to protect your eyes. Hold your phone at least 30 centimeters away from your eyes when using it. After a busy day of work and play, the body needs to rest. Sleep is necessary for good health. During this time, the body recovers from the activities of the previous day. The rest that you get while sleeping enables your body to prepare itself for the next day.
There are four levels of sleep, each being a little deeper than the one before. As you sleep, your muscles (肌肉) relax little by little. Your heart beats more slowly, and your brain slows down. After you reach the fourth level, your body shifts back and forth from one level of sleep to the other.
Although your mind slows down, from time to time you will dream. Scientists who study sleep say that when dreaming occurs (出现), your eyeballs begin to move more quickly (although your eyelids are closed). This stage of sleep is called REM, which stands for rapid eye movement.
If you have trouble falling asleep, some people recommend (建议) breathing very deeply. Other people believe that drinking warm milk will help make you drowsy. There is also an old suggestion that the counting sheep will put you to sleep.

Take a break every hour and try the following: look at something at least five meters from you and then focus on the tip of your nose.
