To his surprise, they all agreed and even helped him move the man onto the bus. Thanks to the driver and the passengers. The man was saved in time. 2b He lost his arm but is still climbing An American mountain climber, who is used to taking risks, is interested in mountain climbing. He almost lost his life because of accidents. One day, his arm was caught under a big rock when climbing. Five days later, when his water ran out, he had to cut off half his right arm to save his life. In order not to lose too much blood, he bandaged himself with his left arm. After losing his arm, he wrote a book which tells of the importance of making good decisions and being in control of life. After the experience, he kept on climbing mountains. Do we have the same spirit as him? Before we make a decision that means life or death, let’s think about it. Unit 2 I’ll help to clean up the city parks 2d Last summer, Tom worked in an old people’s home to help out with many things, like reading the newspaper to the old people or just talking to them. The old people told him stories about the past and how things used to be. Tom thinks we should care for the old people who are lonely. Helen agrees, because we’re going to be old one day. She plans to do the same thing this summer. 3a Students who volunteer Mario and Mary give up several hours each week to help others. Mario volunteers at an animal hospital to learn more about how to care for animals. He gets a strong feeling of satisfaction when seeing animals get better. Mary could read at the age of four. She tried out to be a volunteer to help kids read. Kids are going on a different journey with each book. She can do what she loves to do here and help others at the same time. Her dream comes true. 2b Dear Miss Li, Thank you for giving money to Animal Helpers which was set up to help disabled people. You make it possible for me to have lucky that makes a big difference to my life. Most people can’t imagine being blind or deaf, but many people have these difficulties. I can’t use my arms or legs well, so normal things are difficult for me. To help me out and cheer me up, a friend of mine got me a special trained dog. I was excited about it. After six months of training with a dog at Animal Helpers, I was able to bring it home. The dog’s name is lucky, because I feel lucky to have him. Lucky is clever enough to understand English words and my orders I’ll send you a photo of him to show you how he helps me. Thanks to your kindness, my life is changed. Best wishes, Ben Smith Unit 3 Could you please clean your room? 2d Tom wants to finish watching the show on TV, but his sister thinks two hours of TV is enough, because Mom will be back from shopping any minute and she won’t be happy if she sees the mess. She wants Tom to take out the rubbish, fold the clothes and do the dishes. Although the house is pretty clean and tidy, it’s not “mother clean” 3a One day, as soon as I came home from school and sat down in front of TV, mom came over to ask me to take the dog for a walk. I was so tired that I wanted to watch one show first. Mom was angry with me and she thought I watched TV all the time and never did chores. However, I was as tired as her, so I shouted back. Mom said nothing and walked away. For one week, neither of us did any housework. As a result, I couldn’t find a clean dish or a clean shirt. The next day, after coming home from work, mom was surprised to find the house was clean and tidy. I said sorry to her, because I finally understand that we need to share the housework to have a clean and comfortable home. 3b 1. As for me, parents shouldn’t make their kids do chores at home. The following are some reasons. To begin with, housework is a waste of time, because kids have so much stress from school that they have no time do to it. What’s more, in order to get good grades and get into a good university, kids should spend their time on schoolwork. Most of all, when kids get older, they will have to do housework, so there is no need to do it now. 2. I think it is important for children to learn how to do chores and help their parents with housework. The reasons are as follows. To start with, doing chores helps to develop children’s independence and teaches them how to look after themselves, because many children depend on their parents so much that they have no idea how to take care of themselves. Also, doing housework helps children understand the idea of fairness. Since they live in one house with their parents, everyone should take their part in keeping it clean and tidy. All in all, it’s not enough to just get good grades at school. The earlier kids learn to be independent, the better it is for their future. Unit 4 Why don’t you talk to your parents? 2d Kim found his sister looking through his things and took them. Although she gave them back, he is still angry with her. Dave thinks he should tell her to say sorry and forget about it. After all, it’s not a big deal. He hopes things will work out. 3a 1. At home, I always feel lonely and nervous, because I can’t get on well with my family. On the one hand, my parents often argue and fighting is the only communication they have. I don’t know if I should say anything to them about this. On the other hand, my elder brother is not very nice to me. He always refuses to let me watch my favorite TV show. Instead, he watches whatever he wants. What should I do? 2. It’s normal to have these feelings at your age. Why don’t you talk about these feelings with your family? Firstly, you can offer to help your parents with housework so that they will have more time for proper communication. Secondly, why not sit down and communicate with your brother? Then he will allow you to watch your favorite show. I hope things will be better for you soon. 2b Should students take after-school classes? Should students take after-school classes? Different people have different opinions about it. For my part, I’m against it. Firstly, taking these after-school classes causes too much pressure for children, which is bad for their development. Secondly, children have no time to relax or think for themselves, because these classes take up most of their free time. Last but not least, some parents want their children to be successful, so they send them to these classes. But for children, it’s even more important to be happy. To sum up, parents shouldn’t push their children too hard and stop comparing them with other children. Instead, just let their kids be kids. Unit 5 What were you doing when the rainstorm came? 2d Mary needed help with her homework, so she called Linda three times from 7 to 9 in the evening. But Linda didn’t pick up. What was she doing at that time? At seven, she was in the kitchen helping her mom. At eight, she was taking a shower. At nine, she was sleeping. Finally, Mary had to call Jenny to help her while Linda was sleeping. 3a The Storm Brought People Closer together A heavy rainstorm happened in the area. Before the storm, black clouds were were making the sky very dark. With no light outside, it felt like midnight. When the rain began to beat heavily against the windows, Ben was helping his mom make dinner. After dinner, Ben went to bed. At first, he couldn’t fall sleep. When the wind was dying down, he finally fell asleep. When he woke up and went outside, the sun was rising. He found everything was in a mess. To clean up the neighborhood, all the neighbors worked hard. 2b Do you remember what you were you doing? In 1968, Martin Luther King was killed, which was an important event in American history. Many people remember what they were doing when they heard the news. Allen was eating dinner with his parents when they heard the news on the radio. They were completely shocked and finished the rest of dinner in silence. In 2001, the World Trade Center was taken down by terrorists, which has meaning to most Americans. Kate was working in her office when she heard the news. She didn’t believe it until she looked out of the window. She was too scared to think clearly. Unit 6 An old man tried to move the mountains 2d Two students have different opinions about the story of Yu Gong. Wang Ming thinks the story shows that anything is possible if we work hard. Yu Gong found a good way to solve his problem. He kept trying instead of giving up. However, Claudia disagrees. She thinks it’s a little silly to move a mountain. Instead, we should try to find other ways to solve the problem, like building a road. Although they have different opinions about the story, neither of them are wrong, because there are many sides to a story and many ways to understand it. 3a Most of pupils in England didn’t know the story of Monkey until they watched they watched a new TV program called Monkey. Hansel wanted to get more stones, but his stepmother didn’t let him go out. The next morning, the wife sent the children to the forest again. Hansel had no stones, so he dropped pieces of bread.
