Xu Yuanchong, a well-known Chinese translator, had tried to convey the beauty of ancient Chinese poetry throughout his life. Since 1978, Xu had published more than 100 translated works in Chinese, English and French, reaching millions of readers at home and abroad. Most notably, he translated Chinese poems into rhymed verses in both English and French. He was also the first Asian winner of the Aurora Borealis Prize for Outstanding Translation of Fiction Literature.
Xu was known to be very fastidious in his work. For him, English is a “scientific” language that needs exactness while Chinese is an “artistic” language that includes a wider range of content. Following this principle, Xu kept not only faithfulness in the sense but beauty in sensibility in his translation.
Through Xu’s translations, time-honored Chinese wisdom has made an impact on Western societies and the world. For example, when former US president Barack Obama tried to begin a healthcare project during his presidency, some senators (参议员) disagreed at first. But after reading the poem titled Fishing in Snow translated by Xu, one senator was so impressed with the fisherman’s independent thinking that he chose to part with the party line to support Obama.
Having made such great achievements, Xu maintained a routine. Every day he translated about 1,000 words, working till 3 to 4 a.m., sleeping for about 3 hours and getting up at 6 a.m. to continue. “Translation is a means of communicating with the writer’s soul. A sudden flicker of a good word or a good line thrills every pore (毛孔) and every inch of my skin,” Xu said.
4. What do we know about Xu Yuanchong from paragraph 1?
A. He mastered at least three foreign languages.
B. He translated about 100 Chinese works into English.
C. He was the first winner of the Aurora Borealis Prize.
D. He was widely known for his translated rhymed verses.
5. What does the underlined word “fastidious” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Particular. B. Confident. C. Inventive. D. Productive.
6. Why is the example mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To promote Xu’s translation works.
B. To show Xu’s great translation skills.
C. To stress the importance of Chinese poetry.
D. To prove the wisdom of the ancient Chinese.
7. Which of the following can best describe Xu?
A. Thoughtful and modest. B. Generous and passionate.
C. Devoted and hard-working. D. Creative and open-minded.

According to a study published this week, habitual napping (小睡) appears to be associated with a large brain volume (容量) in adults although experts stressed that further research was needed. It reduces the cost caused by the lost time and the fatigue-related (与疲劳有关的) errors. The work followed previous studies that suggested a brief nap could improve people’s ability to learn.
Arianna Huffington, a co-founder of Huff Post and founder of Thrive Global, said, “Given the latest science on the effectiveness of napping and the clear link between employees feeling well rested and their productivity, it’s long time that businesses allow short naps at work.”
Some businesses, including Thrive Global, have already introduced facilities for employees to take naps. Google introduced sleeprooms as far back as 2014 and companies like Nike and Ben & Jerry’s introduced nap rooms. The practice has even been adopted by the NHS, with a growing number of hospitals introducing sleep rooms for staff in an effort to help them get more rest. Employees, it seems, are enthusiastic. Sean Greenwood, of Ben & Jerry’s, said, “If a quick nap gets employees more involved and creative, we’re happy to provide that for our team members.”
Unfortunately, the practice of napping still suffers from our collective concept that sleep equals weakness and laziness. However, the performance-enhancing benefits of naps have been no secret to many leaders throughout history. It also gives the higher-ups the chance to acknowledge the 24/7 work culture and come up with top-down solutions that encourage workers to take care of themselves in and out of work.
While sleep experts stressed that a daytime nap could be beneficial, they said it was crucial to get enough shut-eye at night, which is essential for overall well-being and strengthens the nerve circuits that make for learning and memory. Nevertheless, few people know how to get sufficient sleep during the regular nightly sleep period.
8. What is paragraph 1 mainly about?
A. The brain volume in adults. B. The overwork and its consequences.
C. Previous studies about napping. D. A research finding published recently.
9. What is Arianna Huffington’s attitude to napping?
A. Critical. B. Favorable. C. Unclear. D. Indifferent.
10. Why do many companies offer their staff sleeping facilities?
A They find a new way to sell their products.
B. They’re aware of the advantages of napping.
C. They aim to inspire the staff work extra hours.
D. They’re trying to draw more people to join them.
11. What might be discussed in the paragraph that follows?
A. The collective concept of napping. B. The storage of memory.
C. The ways to a sound sleep at night. D. The secrets to well-being.
D
In late September, an international team of researchers spread out across a remote New Mexico mountain range in search of a plant. The group walked through the rough landscape looking for signs of plants hugging a tree. Seven days later, the scientists left with a sample of nature’s reward: wild bean plants.
The scientists wanted to collect the legume (豆科植物), which is native to dry regions of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. “The plants have adapted to this very hot and dry climate, so they have exceptional drought and heat tolerance,” said Sarah Dohle, an expert with the U. S. Department of Agriculture.
A warming planet is causing huge damage to agriculture around the globe. In the Western U.S., a severe drought affected California’s tomato and rice production. In Guatemala, the combined effects of both drought and rain decreased corn and black bean harvests. In Sub-Saharan Africa, hot conditions have reduced the yields of wheat and corn by more than a third since the early 1960s.
“Crops like the wild bean could help diversify food production, and their genetic material may help make other crops more drought-and heat-tolerant,” said Richard Pratt, who is among a growing number of scientists working to look for crops adapting to climate change.
The University of California is leading a multi-state $ 15 million project involving 20 institutions to speed up the breeding (繁殖) cycles of wheat and to research ways to help the crop grow in a toughened environment. At Auburn University in Alabama, scientists are working to breed a peanut variety that can better tolerate drought conditions. And scientists from various institutions have taken part in an effort funded by the Norwegian government to identify, collect and evaluate wild crops for future development.
Still, there are numerous challenges at play: Crop breeding is a time-intensive process, so it can be difficult for scientists to keep pace with rapidly changing weather. Advances in gene editing can help speed up the process, but come with their own trials.
“As global climate change keeps being hard on us” Sarah said, “there isn’t plenty of time left for us to get crops that are adaptable.”
12. What’s special about the wild legume?
A. It merely grows in New Mexico.
B. It easily survives in a very hot and dry climate.
C. It may limit rice’s growth conditions.
D. It may help researchers improve crop production.
13. How does the author develop paragraph 3?
A. By giving examples. B. By answering questions.
C. By analyzing reasons. D. By making comparisons.
14. What message does Sarah Dohle convey in the last paragraph?
A. Climate change is controllable. B. Crop breeding is time-consuming.
C. Urgent measures should be carried out. D. Efforts to plant crops prove fruitless.
15. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Overlooked Wild Crops Require Preserving
B. Global Warming Influences Crops’ Adaptation
C. A Severe Drought Is Threatening Food Security
D. Scientists Are Looking for Climate-adapted Crops

It was a sunny autumn morning during the break at Sunshine High School. The passages were filled with sounds of the students chatting and laughing cheerfully. In a classroom on the first floor, some of the freshmen were catching up on their homework, while others were sharing stories about their weekends.
Among them were Alex, a tall and well-built boy crazy about fitness. He was tidying up the teacher’s desk in the front of the classroom. Alex was a popular fellow, always wearing a big smile on his face and ready to help others. Alex’s deskmate Ben was busy preparing for his favourite literature class to be given by their headteacher Ms Eyre. Ben was a newcomer who had just joined the class a week before. He had suffered from a rare condition that led to his extremely limited physical strength, a thin body and reliance on a wheelchair for mobility. Ben usually left his wheelchair outside classrooms during school due to the restricted room capacity. Despite his disability, his friendly nature and optimistic attitude to life quickly endeared him to his new classmates.
Every student was enjoying their brief break when suddenly the ground started to shake violently, sending almost all the books and learning tools flying off the desks. Next, the familiar sound of earthquake alarms rang loudly throughout the school. “Earthquake! Take cover under the desks!” shouted Alex. Thanks to the regular emergency drills (演练) by the school, the students didn’t panic but immediately sprang into action. They quickly pushed away their chairs and hid under the desks, just as they had been taught and practiced many times.
However, Ben, who had never experienced such a disaster, was terribly frightened and at a loss what to do. Seated on his chair and holding on to the edge of his desk, he was trembling along with the ground, his face turning deadly pale. Aware of Ben’s situation, Alex, rose to his feet from under the teacher’s desk.

A. They find a new way to sell their products.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. B 11. C

“As global climate change keeps being hard on us,” Sarah said, “there isn’t plenty of time left for us to get crops that are adaptable.”
12. What’s special about the wild legume?
A. It merely grows in New Mexico.
B. It easily survives in a very hot and dry climate.
C. It may limit rice’s growth conditions.
D. It may help researchers improve crop production.
13. How does the author develop paragraph 3?
A. By giving examples. B. By answering questions.
C. By analyzing reasons. D. By making comparisons.
14. What message does Sarah Dohle convey in the last paragraph?
A. Climate change is controllable. B. Crop breeding is time-consuming.
C. Urgent measures should be carried out. D. Efforts to plant crops prove fruitless.
15. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Overlooked Wild Crops Require Preserving
B. Global Warming Influences Crops’ Adaptation
C. A Severe Drought Is Threatening Food Security
D. Scientists Are Looking for Climate-adapted Crops
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. C 15. D

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

(1)续写词数应为 150 左右;

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version
He made his way to Ben, saying firmly, “Don’t panic! We’ll get out safe.” Ben, his eyes wide with fear, nodded with a forced smile. The second the ground stopped shaking, the students didn’t hesitate to come out from under the desks and make for the exit in an orderly fashion, following the route they were familiar with from the drills. Alex quickly lifted Ben out of his chair, carried him in his strong arms and made his way out of the classroom. He put Ben into his wheelchair outside and pushed it forward quickly. They succeeded in escaping from the teaching building to the open ground.
As Ms Eyre made it to her classroom, she found nobody left behind. Relieved, she quickly reached the playground where her class gathered. When she scanned the crowd and finally spotted Ben, she hurried over, patting him on the shoulder and saying, “Thank goodness, Ben. You’re here.” “Alex helped me out,” Ben responded with gratitude. “You did a great job.” Ms Eyre praised Alex, who just shrugged, saying smilingly, “We’re all here. That’s what matters.” Everyone clapped. The students’ unity and courage made this earthquake an unforgettable experience, strengthening their bond and deepening their understanding of how vital it was to look out for each other.
