According to a new study, kids can improve their brainpower by cooking, gardening and cleaning the house.
It’s a study of 207 children. Scientists have found that housework like making meals and caring for plants had something to do with planning, self-controlling and remembering things.
Collected from children aged 5 to 13 in mid-2020, the results showed 86 percent of the kids put their dirty clothes in the right place and cleaned up after playing. But only 59 percent made their own beds, just 26 percent sorted clothes after washing and 10 percent helped with cooking.
Older children are more likely to do housework than younger ones. Girls do more housework than boys. For example, only 49 percent of the boys but 70 percent of the girls made their own beds.
Around 60 percent of the kids, including 50 percent of the boys and 61 percent of the girls, helped do the dishes. Only 34 percent of the kids aged five to seven did this, but 64 percent of those aged 11 to 13 helped.
“Children who often cook a family meal may be more likely to be good at other ways of life—like schoolwork or problem-solving,” the lead researcher of the study, Ms. Tepper said.

(24-25八年级下·河南焦作·期中)What do you do when you meet challenges (挑战)? I often ask my mom for help, “Could you help me?” However, her answer is always like, “Do it yourself, dear.” This makes me feel upset, leading (导致) me to think of her as a lazy mother.
For example, one day, I invited some friends over, but my bedroom was in a mess. Books were all over the table and floor, and I forgot to make my bed. I asked my mother for help to tidy up, but she seriously replied, “Do it yourself, girl.” I had to clean the room myself. Luckily, when my friends arrived, my bedroom was clean enough.
Because of my mother’s laziness, I have to wash my clothes, keep my room clean, and even help with chores. I even have to go to the dentist by myself when I have a toothache. I do all these things reluctantly (不情愿地) with a voice in my heart, “What a cold and lazy mom I have!”
As I grow up, I understand my mother. Her so-called laziness is actually a way to build my independence. It’s really hard to do everything on my own, but I have learned a lot. Through the early hard times, I’ve learned the importance of depending on myself and got important life skills. Now, I am thankful for the lesson my mother taught me, because the skills have shaped (塑造) me into a stronger, and more hard-working person.

According to a new study, kids can improve their brainpower by cooking, gardening and cleaning the house.
It’s a study of 207 children. Scientists have found that housework like making meals and caring for plants had something to do with planning, self-controlling and remembering things.

You should learn to do small things, for example, you can do the dishes, sweep the floor or make the bed. Part of growing up is to be able to take care of yourself. Doing some small things around the house shows that you are becoming responsible (有责任感的).
◆Divide (划分) housework among the family
In fact, it’s too tiring for one person to do all the housework alone. It’s good to divide housework into different parts. All the family members will do the housework together. Dividing housework among all the family members will make everyone’s job much easier.

(24-25八年级下·湖南常德·期中)All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Play time is important to children, and playing outdoors is really good for them. But today more and more children spend their free time indoors in the USA.They watch TV, play computer games, play with their smart phones, etc.
American father Mike Lanza doesn’t think it’s good for children to spend too much time indoors. So he turned his yard into a playground.
Now on the open playground, there is a zip line (飞索) and a large playhouse with a trampoline (蹦床) and a slide. His three sons and other children from the neighborhood like to have fun there.
Mike and his wife live in Menlo Park, California with their three boys Marco, Nico and Leo. They began building their playground in 2020 after they moved into their Menlo Park house. “To let our kids go outside and play on their own, we think it’s a good idea to turn our yard into a ‘playhouse’.” said Mike.
Unlike many“helicopter parents”, Mike encourages (鼓励) his three boys to take risks (冒险) when they play on the playground. They also welcome three to four children from the neighborhood every day to play there. “Usually within about half an hour, every kid becomes excited and they play, run and laugh. It’s just so wonderful for me to see that.”said Mike.
