The following 4 famous paintings — from Jan van Eyck’s portrait to Pablo Picasso’s masterpiece — have stood the test of time.
The Amolfini Portrait
Jan van Eyck’s Amolfini Portrait, an oil painting on wood produced in 1434, in which a man and a woman hold hands with a window behind him and a bed behind her, is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces in the Nation document on fifteenth-century society, through Van Eyck’s heavy use of symbolism. While husbands went out to engage in business, wives concerned themselves with domestic duties. This painting is as visually interesting as it is famed. It is also informative.
The Starry Night
Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night, oil on canvas, a moderately abstract landscape painting of an expressive night sky over a small hillside village, during his 12 months stay at the mental hospital near Saint-Remy-de-Provence, France between 1889 and 1890. When the Museum of Modern Art in New York City purchased the painting from a private collector in 1941, it was not well known, but it has since become one of van Gogh’s most famous works.
The Harvesters
The Harvesters is an oil painting on wood completed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1565. It describes the harvest time which most commonly occurred within the months of August and September. Nicolaes Jonghelinck, a merchant banker and art collector from Antwerp, commissioned this painting. The painting has been at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City since 1919.
Guernica
Guernica, a large black-and-white oil painting, was painted by the Cubist Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso in 1937. The title “Guernica” refers to the city that was bombed by Nazi planes during the Spanish Civil War. The painting depicts the horrors of war and as a result has come to be an anti-war symbol and a reminder of the tragedies of war. Today, the painting is housed at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid.
1. Which of the following paintings was produced earliest?
A. The Harvesters. B. The Starry Night.
C. Guernica. D. The Amolfini Portrait.
2. Who created the painting describing the harvest seasons?
A. Jan van Eyck. B. Vincent van Gogh.
C. Pieter Bruegel the Elder. D. Pablo Picasso.
3. What do we know about the painting The Starry Night?
A. It was painted on wood in oils.
B. It wasn’t widely recognized before 1941.
C. It was given away to the museum by a collector.
D. It described the painter’s life in hospital.
B
Most parents do not enjoy watching their children act out. Bad behavior by children often results from bad behavior by parents. The first idea that has to go is that poor parenting is what makes children misbehave. The cause of the child’s behavior may lie in the biology of the child. The most important issue is how the parent treats the behavior of the child.
Aggressive (侵略性的) behavior starts early in children’s lives. A study looked at children 6 to 24 months of age. Mothers reported how often their children acted out. They listed kicking, hitting, pulling hair, biting and even hurting animals. The most common actions were hitting or slapping another person. The least common action was hurting animals.
A good many toddlers (学步儿童) began to hit more as they get older. The 24-month-olds were hitting about four to six days a week. Experts can assure parents that these behaviors are normal in small children. The big job is to guide parents. From the start, parents should set limits. They need to respond in ways that may help redirect a child or take his or her attention away. They are better than punishing the child with anger, yelling or beating.
Almost all children will misbehave once in a while. The more aggressive toddlers will need more help. Parents often use their instincts (直觉) to deal with their children. They may respond with anger, threats, and punishment. The better way is to plan to avoid potential battles. If getting ready for school is a problem, come up with ways to make it easier. Ask the child what he or she needs.
You should ignore small bad behavior such as complaining or disrespect. Pick your battles. Do not start with punishments such as ‘no play dates, no TV, no screen time.’ These punishments do not result in better behavior, It is also important to make sure you reward good behavior.
4. What is the key to kids’ bad behavior?
A. Parents’ attitude towards it.
B. Parents’ way of thinking.
C. Parents’ way of dealing with it.
D. Parents’ way of recognition.
5. What do experts think of bad behavior in small children?
A. It is natural. B. It is abnormal.
C. It is dangerous. D. It can be avoided.
6. What should parents do with their kids’ aggressive behavior?
A. Punish their kids severely. B. Prevent possible battles.
C. Be ignorant of their kids. D. Respond with threats.
7. Who is the text intended for?
A. Teachers. B. Writers.
C. Students. D. Parents.

Some people say global English is no longer just controlled by British or American English, but is running free and developing uniquely local forms. Can you figure out the following terms?
“I like your smile, but unlike you put your shoes on my face.” This is a way of saying “Keep off the grass.” Or “people mountain, people sea”, which means “very crowded”.
These examples are what we call Chinglish. When it comes to Chinglish, if all you know is “good good study, day day up”, you will be considered “out man”.
Nowadays, more Chinglish words have been created, for example, a Chinese idiom is translated as “smilence”, a combination by the English word smile and silence.
Chinglish usually offers a humorous look at misuses of the English language in Chinese street signs products, and advertising. They are favoured by some English speaking tourists and visitors. Dominic Swire has been living in Beijing for a couple of years. “I think many Chinese people complain about the Chinglish and badly translated English. But you know, sometimes for us foreigners, it’s actually quite charming to see them. I think if the translations of English in China were all perfect, then something would be lost from Chinese culture.”
However,Chinglish will probably become a “cultural relic” in the near future. Beijing has made a comprehensive plan to improve foreign language services and correct Chinglish within five years. “It is very ridiculous to see Chinglish on the signs in some scenic spots. And they are a kind of barrier for communication between Chinese and people from other countries,” a Beijinger said.
Some Chinese university experts side with Chinglish. They argue that English has absorbed elements from other languages such as French and Spanish in its growth, and now it’s Chinese’s turn.
8. What can we call Chinglish?
A. English words which get new Chinese meanings.
B. The Chinese words which are difficult to translate.
C. The words combining English vocabulary and Chinese grammar.
D. The local words preventing foreigners from learning Chinese well.
9. What does “smilence” most probably mean?
A. Saying nothing but to smile. B. Smiling without being noticed.
C. Laughing at somebody. D. Knowing little about speech.
10. What is Swire’s attitude to Chinglish?
A. It can show the humour of Chinese. B. It will attract more foreign tourists.
C. It helps him to learn Chinese well. D. It seems part of Chinese culture.
11. Why Chinglish is likely to become a “cultural relic” in Beijing?
A. Because it has become a unique bridge between Chinese and English.
B. Because Chinglish is a chance to enrich Chinese and English.
C. Because it improves the understanding between Chinese and foreigners.
D. Because Beijing is determined to get rid of Chinglish signs.
D
New research has highlighted the deep link between dietary choices and brain health. Published in Nature, the research showed that a healthy, balanced diet was linked to superior brain health, cognitive function and mental well-being. The study, involving researchers at the University of Warwick, sheds light on how our food preferences not only influence physical health but also significantly impact brain health.
The dietary choices of a large sample of 181,990 participants from the UK Biobank were analyzed and a range of physical evaluation including cognitive functions, blood metabolic biomarkers, brain imaging, and genetics unveil new insights into the relationship between nutrition and overall well-being.
A balanced diet was associated with better mental health, superior cognitive functions and even higher amounts of grey matter in the brain — linked to intelligence — compared with those with a less varied diet.
The study also highlights the need for gradual changes in eating habits, especially for people who are used to tasty but nutrient-poor foods. By slowly reducing sugar and fat intake over time, people may find themselves naturally tend to make healthier food choices.
Genetic factors may also contribute to the association between diet and brain health, the scientists believe, showing how a combination of genetic predispositions (倾向) and lifestyle choices shapes well-being.
Lead author Professor Jianfeng Feng, University of Warwick, emphasized the importance of establishing healthy food preferences early in life. He said, “Developing a healthy balanced diet from an early age is crucial for healthy growth. To foster the development of a healthy balanced diet, both families and schools should offer a diverse range of nutritious meals and cultivate an environment that supports their physical and mental health.”
Co-author Wei Cheng, Fudan University, added, “Our findings underline the associations between dietary patterns and brain health, urging common efforts in promoting nutritional awareness and fostering healthier eating habits across diverse populations.”
12. What did the research done at the University of Warwick centre on?
A. The link between exercise and brain health.
B. The association between diet and brain health.
C. The impact of well-being on cognitive functions.
D. The effects of a balanced diet on mental well-being.
13. How did researchers draw their conclusion?
A. By analyzing data. B. By conducting surveys.
C. By doing experiments. D. By observing participants.
14. Which of the following is influenced by the amount of grey matter in the brain?
A. A person’s age. B. A person’s weight.
C. A person’s height. D. A person’s cognition.
15. What may the two authors, Jianfeng Feng and Wei Cheng, suggest?
A. Getting regular brain health checks. B. Improving the nutrition in every meal.
C. Forming healthy eating habits early. D. Promoting health awareness in school.

The Science Fair Dream
That spring, my fifth-grade self-became determined to win the school Science Fair’s gold medal. Every year, the gym turned into a magical space: third graders’ “talking” plants in pots, sixth graders’ robot fish feeders, and eighth graders’ erupting volcano models that always amazed everyone. This time, I couldn’t stop staring at the shiny medal, as if it belonged to me already.
With two weeks left, I felt nervous. My notebook was still empty. “What if you build a rocket?” Mom suggested at breakfast, waving her spoon. The idea lit up my mind — a smooth silver rocket with bright blue flames shooting upward. Nothing could be cooler!
We rushed to the store that afternoon. Cardboard turned into rocket parts, and glitter (小发光物) became my space magic. At the kitchen table, I worked like a scientist: pizza box wings, tin foil (锡纸) tips shining like ice. When Dad asked how it would fly, I shook my jar of glitter: “This is the special fuel!”
On the morning of the fair, my glittering rocket stood by the door. In the gym, Mary’s plants grew in real dirt, and Tom’s robot arm picked up candies. I placed my rocket under the sunlight, rainbow colors dancing on its surface. As the judges walked closer, I stood tall, waiting for their amazed faces.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One of the judges asked softly, “Can you explain how your rocket works?”

【46题答案】
【答案】Dear fellow schoolmates,
It’s my privilege to stand here sharing feelings related to coming-of-age ceremony on behalf of all the schoolmates. Admittedly, it’s high time to extend endless gratitude to people backing us up selflessly.
Initially I’d like to convey heartfelt gratitude to our beloved teachers and parents. But for your dedication and care, we couldn’t gain the tremendous improvement today. We are growing up gradually while you are aging unconsciously. Ultimately, I couldn’t thank my relatives and friends too much. Words fail to demonstrate my sincere love to you.
Congratulations again! What we should do is endeavor to take an adult’s responsibility. After all, the marvelous future belongs to us.
Thanks for your attention!
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
One of the judges asked softly, “Can you explain how your rocket works?” My throat tightened. The glitter fuel jar felt suddenly heavy in my palm. “Well…the glitter creates driving force when it sparkles,” I stammered, watching the judge’s smile fade into polite confusion. Beside me, Tom demonstrated his robotic arm’s precise candy-sorting calculation using real coding terms. My cardboard wings bent under the gym’s colorful lights as I finally understood — while I’d been crafting decorations, others had been studying actual science.
When the awards were announced, my name wasn’t called. Mary got third place for her plant experiment. Tom won second with his robot arm. The gold medal went to an eighth grader who made a water cleaner using real science. I clapped but felt my face turn hot. My rocket’s glitter looked childish now. Mom hugged me and said, “Real scientists fail many times before they succeed.” Dad pointed to the gold medal winner — she had made a volcano the year before but worked harder this time. Walking home, I held my rocket tightly. That night, I started drawing new plans for next year’s science fair. The medal still mattered, but I wanted to earn it properly — with real experiments, not just glitter.
