The Admonitions Scroll is considered a milestone in Chinese painting history.
Traditionally attributed to Gu Kaizhi (about AD 345—406) it probably dates to between AD 400 and 700.
This masterpiece shows a poetic text composed by an official Zhang Hua(about AD 232—300) aimed at correcting the behavior of an empress. The Scroll carries inscriptions (题字) by later collectors including the Qianlong emperor (1736—1795). The British Museum purchased the Scroll from Captain Clarence Johnson (1870—1937) who was in Beijing in 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion (1899—1901). Originally a hand scroll, the painting and later inscriptions were separated and mounted onto panels in 1914.
Visiting information
The Admonitions Scroll will be on display from Monday, 14 July — Monday, 25 August, 2025. Due to conservation precautions, it can only be displayed for six weeks each year.

In Silver Spring, Maryland, Manuel Vera found a simple way to encourage his neighbors to enjoy the outdoors and stay active — by fixing their old bikes. At 74, retired from the power company, he offered to repair bikes for free, asking only to be repaid for any parts. Soon he realized many bikes were just collecting dust in garages. He invited neighbors to donate them, then got to work in his workshop.
Vera’s workshop is nearly as tricked out as his bikes. The green gardening workshop, its inner walls lined with tools, holds a workbench and repair stand, and even has air conditioning and Wi-Fi. You’ll know Vera is at work when classic rock or folk music floats out its open doors. Space is tight, so Vera prefers to work alone — though not for lack of volunteers.
When many Afghanistan refugees (难民) arrived in 2021, the need for bikes grew. Vera repaired and delivered them to parks, food banks, and churches. Setting up a “Free Bikes” sign, he waited as people came by. “Are they really free?” they’d ask. “Yes,” he’d reply. “If you like this bike, it’s yours.” His first event gave away six bikes in less than 30 minutes.
Neighbors now call him the “Bike Guy.” They supply him with bikes, helmets, and locks. He works with nonprofits and resettlement groups, who send him a person’s age and height. Then Vera delivers the perfect bike right to their door. “People came to the U. S. with nothing,” says Vera, “They used to be professionals — but now they’ve lost everything and need help starting over.”
So far, Vera has given away more than 700 bikes. One Afghan man received a bike with lights and safety gear for his night job. Syrian refugee Alashe got a sports bike for exercise — worth up to $800. “It was one of my dreams,” he said. “Now I can ride, stay healthy, and feel free.”
24. What was Vera’s original purpose of repairing old bikes?
A. To collect rare bicycle parts. B. To promote outdoor activities.
C. To clear out his dusty garage. D. To earn extra retirement income.
25. What best describes Vera’s workshop?
A. Tiny but well-equipped. B. Spacious but rarely used.
C. Noisy and poorly organized. D. Shared and frequently visited.
26. Why did Vera ask for a person’s age and height?
A. To arrange a bike pickup.
B. To deliver a tailored bike.
C. To track refugee information.
D. To cooperate with local groups.
27. What’s the significance of Ibrahim Alashe’s words?
A. They describe a costly gift.
B. They reveal safety concerns.
C They show sincere gratitude.
D. They suggest a hopeful dream.

Scientists warn that the way people store fat in their bodies could influence their risk of developing certain types of cancer, particularly colorectal (结直肠的) cancer.
Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. In the U. S. alone, around 150,000 new cases are expected in 2024. While unhealthy diet, smoking, heavy drinking, and general obesity have long been recognized as major risk factors, recent research is focusing on how fat is distributed in the body.
A common way to describe fat distribution is by body shape—such as “apple-shaped” (fat mainly around the waist) and “pear-shaped” (fat mainly around the hips). Studies have shown that people with apple-shaped bodies face higher risks of heart disease. Now, evidence suggests that this body type may also raise the risk of colorectal cancer, even in those with a normal Body Mass Index (BMI).
The study, published in Science Advances, analyzed data from 329,828 UK Biobank participants to investigate this relationship between body type and cancer risk. It found that taller individuals with central obesity (an apple-shaped body) faced a higher risk of colorectal cancer, as did those with general obesity.
The team also explored genetic data from 460,198 participants and found that certain genes associated with body fat distribution might affect cancer risk in different ways. For example, general obesity was linked to genes highly expressed in the brain, while central obesity was related to genes active in fat tissue. “These findings suggest that digestive (消化的) health may partly originate in the brain and fat tissue,” said lead researcher Heinz Freisling.
Although more research is needed, scientists believe that recognizing body shape and fat distribution can improve our understanding of cancer risk. In the meantime, staying physically active and maintaining a balanced diet remain important steps in reducing cancer risk.
28. To better understand the risk factors, the recent research changed its focus to ________.
A. fat stored around waist. B. harms of heavy drinking.
C. fat distribution patterns. D. number of cancer cases.
29. What do the genetic data reveal?
A. The brain controls digestion. B. Fat tissues affect brain health.
C. Genes determines fat distribution. D. Fat-related genes influence cancer risk.
30. What is the author’s attitude toward the study’s findings?
A. Partly supportive. B. Strongly doubtful.
C. Generally optimistic. D. completely convinced.
31. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. Apple or Pear? Your Cancer Risk May Differ.
B. Why Fat Storage Affects Cancer Treatment.
C. How Genes Shape Both Your Body and Mind.
D. Diet or Genes? The Causes of Colorectal Cancer.

Globally, two billion people use 5G wireless networks. These users benefit from faster upload and download speeds, lower delays, and improved reliability. But this progress comes with a cost—5G networks use far more energy than previous generations.
To address this, researchers at the University of Notre Dame, with support from the U. S. Army, are working on a solution. They aim to create an energy-efficient antenna (天线) that still delivers 5G-level performance. The team will build on their earlier research in low-power antennas and work with industry partners to complete the design.
The effort is led by Jonathan Chisum, an associate professor of electrical engineering. His team is developing a new type of antenna using man-made materials created in his lab. Traditional cell towers require separate antennas and power-hungry chips for each frequency band. Chisum’s idea is to replace many of these with one wideband antenna that uses the physics of materials to guide and focus radio waves — just like a lens (透镜) bends light — removing the need for multiple active chips.
The result is a millimeter-wave gradient index(GRIN) lens antenna. Though GRIN lenses have been known for over a century, using them for 5G networks was once seen as unrealistic. However, years of work in wideband beam steering (波束控制) have allowed Chisum’s lab to create one antenna that works across all 5G bands. This breakthrough is especially valuable to the U. S. Army, which depends on 5G for secure communication, tracking equipment, and monitoring soldier health in remote areas. The antenna’s low power use and small size make it perfect for mobile operations.
Looking ahead, Chisum hopes this technology will also benefit commercial users. Many 5G base station setups have stalled due to the high cost of using multiple antennas. The wideband GRIN antenna may change that by lowering both costs and energy demands. Chisum’s lab is working with partners to improve the design using advanced 3D printing. With further testing, this innovation could power both military and civilian networks — bringing efficient “5G-on-the-move” to the world.
32. What is the main drawback of 5G networks?
A. Higher energy use. B. Weak signal reliability.
C. Slower upload speeds. D. Limited frequency bands.
33. What is the key idea of Chisum’s plan?
A. Build more cell towers. B. Use one antenna for all.
C. Employ lens-like materials. D. increases frequency bands.
34. What is the main idea of paragraph 4?
A. Difficulty in adapting GRIN lenses. B. GRIN lenses’ historical development.
C. Challenges in 5G military applications. D. A breakthrough in multi-band antenna.
35. What does the underlined word “stalled” in paragraph 5 most probably mean?
A. Continued. B. Expanded. C. Stopped. D. Simplified.

Choosing new technology for schools can be exciting, but poor planning often leads to wasted time and money. ____36____ Here are three that matter most.
Timeline for implementation (实施)
We often plan tech adoption on a school-year cycle starting in August or September. But that timing can backfire. Instead, the best time to begin test cases is during the spring of the year before full implementation. ____37____ Schools should seek companies that support multi-year plans with fair prices, starting early to lower the risk.
Professional Learning
New contracts often include initial training. But what happens in later years with new teachers, deeper implementation, or refresher needs? ____38____ If two products offer similar features, knowing which one includes long-term professional learning — and which one charges extra — can make or break a decision.
Working with old systems
New tools don’t work alone. Schools already have systems in place, like learning management platforms and student databases. ____39____ Educators and students benefit when systems are connected and simple to use. ____40____
By carefully considering implementation timing, ongoing training needs, and system integration, schools can turn technology investments from potential wastes into lasting educational resources. Thoughtful planning in these three areas ensures new tools truly improve teaching and learning.
A. New tools must work well with those already in use.
B. Not every new tool needs to interact with existing ones.
C. However, poor system integration can waste teachers’ time.
D. But problems can arise if certain questions aren’t considered.
E. Trying out tools during spring makes full use easier in the fall.
F. Some companies are generous at first but later become hard to reach.
G. To avoid failure, schools should ask key questions before making a purchase.

It all started with a simple question, “Can I paint your portrait (肖像)?”
In the summer of 2024, Brian Peterson and his wife, Vanessa, had just moved into a small apartment in Santa Ana, California. The neighborhood was unfamiliar, the streets quiet and still. But one sound stood out — every morning and evening, a man’s shouting came from the corner. Dirty clothes, wild hair, long fingernails — the man looked like he hadn’t showered in a year. Brian passed him on the way to work every day. But they never spoke.
One quiet afternoon Brian sat on his couch, reading Love Does, a book filled with stories about love expressed through action. The sun poured through the window. Then — another shout from outside. Annoyed at first, Brian looked up. But something from the book moved him. Maybe love wasn’t just a feeling. Maybe it was a decision.
Without overthinking, he stood up, walked outside, and approached the man.
“Hi,” he said gently. “I’m Brian.”
The man blinked, surprised. “Matt,” he replied after a pause.
In that first conversation, Peterson learned that Matt Faris had come to California from Kentucky with a dream — he wanted to become a musician. But things fell apart. No job, no money, no home. For more than ten years, he had lived on the streets.
Brian listened. And as he looked at Matt, something unexpected happened. Under the dirt and roughness, he saw depth. He saw a story worth telling.
“It sounds crazy,” Brian said, “but I saw beauty.” And even though Brian, a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in about eight years, he found himself asking, “Would you let me paint your portrait?”
Matt looked at him for a long moment. Then he smiled and said, “Sure.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When Brian shared the finished painting online, something unexpected happened.

D To cooperate with local groups.
27. What’s the significance of Ibrahim Alashe’s words?
A. They describe a costly gift.
B. They reveal safety concerns.
C. They show sincere gratitude.

30 What is the author’s attitude toward the study’s findings?

A. Continued. B. Expanded. C. Stopped. D. Simplified.
【答案】32. A 33. B 34. D 35. C

【答案】Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m writing to express my concern about the cafeteria’s use of single-use plastic tableware. While convenient, these items create unnecessary plastic waste, harming the environment. Worse still, plastic takes hundreds of years to decompose, polluting oceans and endangering wildlife.
To reduce waste, I suggest switching to reusable tableware or biodegradable alternatives. Encouraging students to bring their own containers could also help. Small changes like these would make our school more eco-friendly.
Thank you for considering my suggestions.
Best regards,
Li Hua

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One quiet afternoon, Brian sat on his couch, reading Love Does, a book filled with stories about love expressed through action.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
When Brian shared the finished painting online, something unexpected happened. Within hours, likes and comments poured in. People were drawn not only to the painting, but to the story behind it — a man so often ignored, now seen in full color. Strangers wrote to say they were moved to tears. A local gallery offered to buy the painting, and the money from the sale was used to help Matt. He got a haircut, new clothes, and even a small room to sleep in. For the first time in years, Matt felt human again. “You didn’t just paint me,” he told Brian gratefully. “You reminded me I still matter.”
Inspired, Brain decided to help more people. He couldn’t stop thinking about the others — men and women with untold stories, passed by every day. With Vanessa’s help, he launched Humans of the Streets, a project that used portrait art to restore dignity and hope. Brian would sit, talk, and listen before lifting a brush. Each portrait came with a name, a face, and a second chance. Donations from the paintings went directly to support the people he painted — food, shelter, even job training. What began as one painting on a quiet afternoon had grown into something far bigger: a movement of love, one face at a time.
