Sometimes, life gives us the dog we need instead of the one we want. That’s exactly what happened with Sunny, a Border Collie mix. Before coming to our home at ten months old, he had been returned to the shelter three times. The tough past made him psychologically damaged. As a typical Border Collie, he was smart and learned quickly, but we were frustrated by his fear-based aggression.
Over time, we realized he had an amazing ability to sense grief, wound and illness. Not only would he sense something was wrong, but he would change his behavior and look for ways to comfort us during our darkest moments. We were shocked at his gift.
A year after Sunny settled in, I got a brain injury. I felt terrible, and others didn’t understand me. But Sunny stayed by my side. When I was down, he’d lie next to me. When I was in bed, he’d lean against me. He was like my doctor, teacher, and friend all in one. His care helped me a lot. I sort of learned how to be a dog, too — to clear my mind, to be in the moment, and to be content just hanging out doing “nothing”.
Since then, Sunny has been with us through the loss of friends and family members, illness and upheavals (剧变). After sixty-three years of spirited marriage, losing my mom put my dad into a deep depression. Usually Dad was seen sitting outside on our deck, crying quietly. His emotional state did great damage to his physical body.
Sunny had a different healing approach. One day, I heard a giggle, then full-blown laughter, from outside. I walked to the window and looked out to see Sunny, his paws up on the chair, covering kisses on my dad’s face and washing away his tears. My dad was laughing, really howling, for the first time in ages. Sunny gave Dad a new reason to live. They played together, and my dad’s mobility and mood improved when he was around the dog. He showed pictures of his grand-dog to anyone who would look.
4. What was Sunny’s trouble before coming to the author’s home?
A. He was born with illness.
B. He didn’t have a stable environment.
C. He had no friends to play with.
D. He had to get starved.
5. What special ability did Sunny have?
A. He knew when and how to comfort his owner.
B. He had his own way to treat illnesses.
C. He could tell the good from the wrong.
D. He was cleverer than humans.
6. What did Sunny do to make the father laugh?
A. Touching his own face.
B. Drying the father’s tears by kissing him.
C. Playing a game with the father.
D. Touching the chair with his paws.
7. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. A dog helped a family through hardships.
B. Border Collies are intelligent and sensitive dogs.
C. Pets can improve people’s physical and mental health.
D. The bond between humans and animals is unbreakable.

In the world of deep-sea exploration and innovation, OceanGate once stood at the crossroads of cutting-edge engineering and daring adventure. Known for its exploration and commercial operations, the company gained international attention in June 2023 when its Titan submersible (潜水器) tragically imploded (内爆) during a dive to the Titanic sleeping site.
The Titan, a carbon fiber and titanium ship designed for extreme depths, was on an expedition to explore the Titanic shipwreck when the submersible lost contact with its support ship, the Polar Prince, shortly after launching off the coast of Newfoundland. The submersible implosion led to the deaths of all five passengers aboard, including OceanGate’s cofounder and CEO, Stockton Rush.
Despite early hopes, the U.S. Navy had detected an acoustic signature (声波信号) consistent with a catastrophic implosion shortly after Titan lost contact, but this information was not made public until after the remains were found. The U.S. Coast Guard, working alongside Canadian and international partners, launched a massive search effort involving sonar (声纳), other equipment and remotely operated vehicles. After several tense days, remains from the Titan was located on the ocean floor, near the front end of the Titanic. Pieces of the vessel and recovered human remains were later brought to the surface for DNA testing.
The Titan’s innovative design used carbon fiber, which some experts questioned for its durability at deep-sea pressures. As examination went on, OceanGate suspended all commercial operations. A Marine Board of Investigation, the highest level of inquiry conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard, was formed to determine what went wrong, including details about the company’s development, fleet and operational standards.
OceanGate’s approach, once praised as creative, now faces criticism for lacking sufficient engineering oversight. Videos, interviews, and reports, including from the Associated Press, point to concerns that were downplayed in pursuit of rapid development.
The five passengers aboard the Titan were not just tourists; they were explorers driven by curiosity. Their loss serves as a solemn reminder of both the promise and danger that comes with reaching into Earth’s final frontiers, from the sea floor to the stars.
8. Which of the following best describe OceanGate?
A. An engineer working on sea life.
B. A project on the development of oceans.
C A company aiming to explore the deep sea.
D. A ship especially designed for deep-sea voyages.
9. Who probably was the first to get the signal from the Titan’s implosion?
A. Canadian explorers.
B. Its support ship, the Polar Prince.
C. International partners.
D. The U.S. Navy.
10. What is the main focus of the fourth paragraph?
A. The innovative materials used in Titan’s design.
B. The investigation into potential causes of the disaster.
C. The immediate suspension of company operations.
D. The future regulations for deep-sea exploration.
11. What did the accident make people think about?
A. The beauty of the deep sea.
B. The importance of space tourism.
C. The safety challenges of extreme exploration.
D. The economic benefits from exploration.

Is happiness the result of inner personal qualities or from outside influences such as connections, well-being, and career fulfillment? Researchers examined this question in a study recently released in Nature Human Behaviour.
Their aim was to better grasp the roots of happiness to create improved public policy methods and programs to boost happiness across communities. “We need to identify the causes of happiness to design effective solutions,” said lead author Dr. Emorie Beck, Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of California.
If happiness is mainly linked to outside influences, public policy efforts to enhance happiness should aim to better areas like health and financial security. However, if happiness is mostly shaped by inner factors like individual traits (特性) and outlooks, policy strategies should concentrate on uplifting mental well-being through methods like counseling, reflection, and awareness practices.
The experts collected survey answers from over 40,000 individuals who had joined earlier studies on life contentment over a period of up to 33 years. Participants were from Great Britain, Switzerland, Germany, The Netherlands, and Australia, and the surveys measured both overall life satisfaction over time as well as fulfillment in five areas: relationships, job, health, earnings, and living conditions.
Their findings revealed that respondents split into one of four nearly equal groups based on the main sources of their happiness: 1) inner personal traits (“top-down” model ); 2) outside influences (“bottom-up” model); 3) a mix of inner and outer factors; or 4) no clear tie to inner or outer factors.
According to Beck, “We observe roughly equal groups showing each trend. Some are bottom-up; some are top-down, the areas don’t impact their happiness; some are two-way, and some are uncertain.”
In the group where no clear link to inner or outer factors was found, the researchers suggested that other elements beyond the five studied areas might be shaping their happiness.
These results indicate that studies of happiness combining data from whole groups do not account for personal differences. Public policy plans for raising happiness across society that focus only on top-down or only on bottom-up methods are unlikely to work. Instead, policies must offer ways to better both inner and outer factors while being adaptable enough to suit individuals.
12. What is the main purpose of the study led by Beck?
A. To compare happiness levels across different countries.
B. To understand the sources of happiness for better public policies.
C. To prove that money is the key factor in happiness.
D. To encourage people to try all ways for happiness.
13. How did the researchers conduct the study?
A. By interviewing people face-to-face.
B. By observing people’s daily behaviors.
C. By analyzing data from previous long-term studies.
D. By conducting experiments in different communities.
14. What can we learn from the findings of the study?
A. Most people’s happiness comes from outside influences.
B. Inner personal traits have no impact on people’s happiness.
C. There are no areas that don’t impact people’s happiness.
D. Different people may have different main sources of happiness.
15. What does the study suggest about public policies aimed at improving happiness?
A. They should focus only on improving economic conditions.
B. They should target the improvement of individual qualities.
C. They should be flexible and address both inner and outer factors.
D. They should ignore individual differences and focus on averages.

I had just returned to Canada after spending almost a month in a warm mountain valley in Mexico. I had gone to spend Christmas with my husband who was teaching there. What a change it was being back in freezing cold Alberta.
I was scheduled to work on New Year’s Day so I got up at seven and walked outside to assess the weather. The warm winds assured me that we were in for a good day. I didn’t bother to retrieve my winter gloves from our other vehicle.
My first day back at work went well and as night approached I remembered the car needed gas. It felt a lot colder by the time I headed for the only gas station that was open at eight in the evening. I hadn’t wanted to use that particular station because it was self-service only and it was starting to get very cold again.
I must have looked pretty funny as I tried to squeeze the gas handle with my hand in my coat pocket. There was a young man watching me from one of the other pumps.
I felt that I should provide an explanation. “I know I look silly, but my hands are so cold and I thought if I put my hand in my pocket I could use my coat for protection. Of course, that means I have to stand in this awkward position.” I looked as though I was hugging the car.
For a moment, he said nothing. “He probably thinks I’m a real nut case (古怪的人),” I thought to myself. Then I heard a voice and saw a pair of gloves sticking out beyond his gas pump. “Could you use a pair of gloves?”
I shut off the pump and walked over. “Oh, yes please,” I replied, taking the offering and slipping my hands into the warm leather gloves. I went back and returned to filling my tank.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then I noticed the young man was pumping gas with nothing to protect his own hands from the cold.

【答案】Dear Kimmy,
I’m writing to share with you my experience of the reading sharing activity held in our school last week.
In this activity, students recommended their favorite books and shared insights. Not only did we get to know about a wide range of wonderful works, but we also actively debated on various ideas presented. We listened to different perspectives, which broadened our horizons. I also made some new friends who have the same reading interests.
This activity deepened my love for reading and improved my communication skills. It was really a rewarding experience.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】
Then I noticed the young man was pumping gas with nothing to protect his own hands from the cold. Guilt washed over me, and I quickly walked over to him. “You really shouldn’t be out here in the cold without gloves,” I said, trying to take off the gloves he had lent me. But he just smiled and waved his hand. “Keep them. I’ll be okay. It makes me happy to help someone,” he replied. Touched by his generosity, I thanked him profusely. As I drove away, I decided that I would pay this kindness forward.
Another chilly evening a week later, I found myself at the same station with a pair of extra warm gloves in my bag. I was filling my tank when I saw an elderly woman struggling with the gas pump, her hands red from the cold. Remembering my own experience, I approached her. “Ma’am, would you like to borrow these?” I asked, holding out the gloves. Her eyes widened with surprise and gratitude. “Oh, that’s so kind of you!” she exclaimed. Watching her slip on the gloves, I felt a warmth inside that no cold could ever touch. The cycle of kindness continued, just as it should.
