If you’ve long assumed that you must rid yourself of delicious foods to be healthy, a new study offers encouraging news: Eating dark chocolate has been associated with a reduced risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
The research did not prove that the chocolate itself was responsible for this health benefit; it could be something else about the people who ate dark chocolate that made them less likely to develop diabetes. And dark chocolate should not be considered a “magic bullet” for preventing diabetes, said Dr. Sun, a professor of nutrition from Harvard.
But the findings do build on a larger body of research demonstrating links between dark chocolate consumption and reduced risks of certain health conditions like high blood pressure.
“The results”, Dr. Sun added, “suggest that a little dark chocolate can be part of a healthy diet”. In the mid-1980s and early 1990s, researchers began studying three groups of mostly white health professionals. Every four years, the more than 190,000 participants completed detailed diet questionnaires, which asked how often they consumed chocolate.
Beginning in 2006 and 2007, depending on the group, the researchers tweaked (调整) the questionnaires to ask how often participants ate dark chocolate and milk chocolate. They followed the participants’ health for up to 34 years. During that time, nearly 19,000 participants developed Type 2 diabetes.
After adjusting for other aspects of their lifestyles, such as exercise, alcohol consumption, as well as their age and family history of diabetes, the researchers found that people who consumed at least five servings of any type of chocolate per week had a 10 percent lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes compared with those who rarely or never ate chocolate.
But when they drilled down into the data from the nearly 112,000 people who provided details on the types of chocolate they consumed, the researchers found an even more striking result: Those who consumed at least five servings of dark chocolate per week had a 21 percent lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes than those who consumed dark chocolate less than once per month.
24. Which statement would Dr. Sun agree with?
A. Dark chocolate alone can not prevent diabetes.
B. Dark chocolate can be eaten in large quantities.
C. Chocolate is likely to directly prevent Type 2 diabetes.
D. Milk chocolate and dark one have equal health benefits.
25. How did the researchers carry out the study?
A. By tracking people with a family history of diabetes.
B. By observing participants’ chocolate-eating habits.
C. By performing experiments and making comparisons.
D. By conducting surveys and making adjustments.
26. In which section of a newspaper might you read this article?

The conflict between Harvard University and the US government regarding the ban on international students has drawn global attention. The US government’s sudden decision to prohibit international students from studying at Harvard has sent shockwaves through the educational world.
One of the main reasons the US government gave for the ban was national security threats allegedly posed by international students. However, Harvard has vehemently refuted this claim. The university emphasizes that international students have always abided by US laws and regulations and have made positive contributions to the academic and social life on campus. For instance, many international students actively participate in community service activities organized by the university, promoting cultural exchange and understanding.
In addition, Harvard highlights that the ban will have a negative impact on the entire US higher-education system. International students contribute not only to the academic diversity but also to the economic development of the country. They pay tuition fees, which support the operation of universities and create job opportunities. Moreover, the knowledge and skills they acquire in the US may lead to future cooperation and exchanges between different countries.
The lawsuit filed by Harvard is not just for its own sake but also for the principle of fairness and the future of international education in the US. The university hopes that the court will carefully consider the case and make a just decision that respects the rights of international students and the freedom of academic exchange.

A. They were happy about it.
B. They paid little attention to it.

A. Because international students caused economic problems.
B. Because international students were considered a national security threat.
C. Because international students didn’t like American culture.
D. Because international students didn’t get along well with American students.
30. What positive contributions do international students make according to Harvard?
A. They only bring economic benefits.
B. They participate in community service and promote cultural exchange.
C. They help the US government solve national security problems.
D. They make American students more competitive.
31. What is the significance of Harvard’s lawsuit?
A. It is only for the university’s own interests.
B. It is for the principle of fairness and the future of international education in the US.
C. It is to show the university’s power.
D. It is to make the US government change its attitude towards Harvard.
【答案】28. C 29. B 30. B 31. B

On the top floor of a workshop in Athens, Greece, a team of artists are busy creating faithful copies of the famous statue of Alexander the Great and the Venus de Milo.
“Our work mostly ends up at gift shops around the world. Museums also ask us to make copies of artworks. Prices start at $24 for a small Venus statue and go as high as $11,560 for a faithful copy of it.” says Maria Zafeiri, an artist at the workshop for 30 years. “It’s exciting when our statues end up in a museum and thousands of eyes admire them. They bring even more visitors to Greece.”
Making copies of ancient Greek statues isn’t new. Researchers and artists began reproducing ancient Greek sculptures shortly after the National Archaeological Museum in Athens opened in 1829.
“The first copies were not for commercial reasons, but for scientific ones. Scholars wanted to study the ancients.” says Maria Zafeiri. “Later, everyone wanted statues in their house, above the fireplace. They were in all European living rooms.”
Some copies of ancient statues were terrible, but other reproductions were so faithful that they ended up in places like the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. In 2018, the museum determined its famous Kouros statue—supposed to date from 650 to 480 BC and bought for $6 million—was probably a forgery (赝品), and removed it from view. “There are methods to fool the experts.” Maria Zafeiri says. “Such forgeries create a false image of Greek culture and mislead researchers.”
But aren’t Maria Zafeiri and her workshop also producing forgeries? “I think the difference between a forgery and a reproduction is the intention. There are reproductions of designer bags, but that becomes forgeries when the reproducer says they’re real.” says Maria Zafeiri. “Our shop just feeds the desire of travelers to own something lovely to pack up or ship home. A good reproduction can extend your trip. It’s similar to a photograph of yourself while on vacation, it brings you back to that beautiful day at the Acropolis.”
32. How does Maria Zafeiri most probably feel about her work?
A. Ashamed. B. Proud. C. Bored. D. Dissatisfied.
33. Who were the targeted customers of the reproduced ancient Greek statues in the 1830s?
A. Researchers. B. Businessmen.
C. Souvenir seekers. D. Treasure hunters.
34. What can be inferred about the Kouros statue bought by the Getty Museum?
A. The reproduction was worth the money. B. The museum had a lot of such forgeries.
C. It was probably from a skilled artist. D. It was created between 650 and 480 BC.
35. What sets a forgery apart from a reproduction according to Maria Zafeiri?
A. The price. B. The material. C. The quality. D. The purpose.
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. C 35. D
【解析】

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了向朋友表达爱意的五种方式。
【36题详解】
上文“If you want to tell your friends you love them, consider arranging a day trip or group activity.(如果你想告诉你的朋友你爱他们,可以考虑安排一日游或团体活动)”说明通过安排活动向朋友表达爱意,下文“There might be plenty of opportunities to sightsee or try new things in your local area.(在你的当地地区,可能有很多观光或尝试新事物的机会)”说明在当地有很多机会做有意义的事情,空处需要一个能够承接上下文的句子,既要与安排活动相关,又要与在当地地区相关。选项C“也没必要离家太远。”符合语境,其中“not go too far from home” 与后文“local area”形成呼应,衔接自然。故选C。
【37题详解】
下文“Creating a special meal for your friends may be one of the easiest ways to show them you care.(为你的朋友准备一顿特别的饭可能是向他们表达你关心他们的最简单的方法之一)”说明通过准备食物向朋友表达爱意,空处需解释为何晚餐是表达关爱的方式。选项D“纵观历史,人们因为食物聚在一起。”符合语境,其中 “come together over food”为主题“host dinner”提供背景支撑,逻辑连贯。故选D。
【38题详解】
上文“Send them a radio shout-out, have a cake baked with their faces on it, or throw them a surprise party.(给他们一个电台的呼喊,烤一个印有他们脸的蛋糕,或者给他们举办一个惊喜派对)”说明可以通过送礼物来表达对朋友的庆祝和关心。空处需总结或补充此类行为的核心目的。选项F“想办法让他们脸上露出笑容。”符合语境,其中“put a smile on their faces”概括了前文所有行动的共同目标,形成呼应。故填F。
【39题详解】
上文“If someone you care about is struggling or needs a boost (激励), be there to encourage them.(如果你关心的人正在挣扎或需要鼓励,就在那里鼓励他们)”说明要鼓励朋友。下文“But if that does not work, you could show them how much you believe in them. Send them flowers or hug them.(但如果那不起作用,你可以向他们展示你有多相信他们。送他们花或拥抱他们)”说明如果直接的鼓励不起作用,还可以通过其他方式来表达爱意,空处需具体说明几句真心话可以帮助别人看到积极的一面,并和下文形成转折关系。选项E“几句真心话可以帮助别人看到积极的一面。” 符合语境,“A few heartfelt words”是一种直接的鼓励方式,与后文“若不起作用则用送花或拥抱”形成转折对比。故选E。
【40题详解】
上文“Perhaps you hear a joke you think they would like or come across an inspirational message you think they need to hear.(也许你听到了一个你觉得他们会喜欢的笑话,或者遇到了一个你觉得他们需要听到的鼓舞人心的信息)”说明你可能想到了朋友会喜欢的东西。空处和前文为顺接关系,说明可以考虑把这些分享给朋友。选项A“考虑把它发送过去。”符合语境,“sending it along”对应前文“笑话或信息”,并与后文“make it known”形成因果关系。故选A。

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Living with my mom and grandma was never easy, but we made the best of it. We didn’t have much, and life was tough, but love was enough for me. Still, I couldn’t help but feel excited about the dancing party. Like most girls, I dreamed of wearing a beautiful dress and feeling like I belonged.
One morning, my mom, Dina, and grandma, Holly, surprised me with an envelope containing some money. “We’ve been saving up,” Mom said softly, sliding the envelope across the table. Inside, there was just enough money to buy a dress. “Thank you!” I hugged them. “I can’t believe you did this for me!” I was super happy and couldn’t wait to buy the perfect dress.
On the bus ride to the dress shop, I held the envelope tightly, imagining the gown I’d choose. But my thoughts were interrupted when two conductors started checking tickets. That’s when I noticed a man at the back of the bus. He looked worried.
“I don’t have my ticket,” he said in a whisper, looking embarrassed. “I forgot my wallet at home.” Hearing that, the conductors exchanged annoyed glances.
“No ticket means a fine,” one of them said seriously. “You need to pay the fine, or we’ re calling the police to deal with this matter.”
“Please, I’m begging you,” the man said. “I need to go to the hospital to look after my daughter because she’s sick, and my wife told me she is in danger. I left my wallet in my room when rushing here. Please, I just need to get to her. I have no money to pay for the ticket.”
The bus workers didn’t seem convinced of what the man said. One of them shook his head and said, “We’ve heard many excuses during my job. If you can’t pay the fine, you’ll have to explain yourself to the police.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
My heart ached, watching the sadness in the man’s eyes.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I returned home empty-handed and told my grandma what had happened.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
My heart ached, watching the sadness in the man’s eyes. I hesitated, thinking about the dress, but something inside me told me this man needed my help more than I needed a dress. Before I could think twice, I stood up and said, “I’ll pay his fine.” The man looked at me with wide eyes as I handed the money to the bus driver. “I can’t believe you did that,” he said with tears in his eyes. “You’ve saved me. Thank you!” “It’s okay,” I smiled. “I hope your daughter feels better soon.”
I returned home empty-handed and told my grandma what had happened. My grandma hugged me. “You did the right thing,” she whispered. “Kindness always comes back.” A few days later, I heard someone knocking on the door. I opened the door, finding the man I met on the bus standing there. He gave me a box. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I unwrapped it. It was the most beautiful dress I had ever seen. He said the dress was a gift from his daughter. At that moment, I realized my grandma was right.

24 Which statement would Dr.
A. Diet & Culture. B. Health & Science.
C. Food & Lifestyle. D. Sports & Exercise.
27. Which can be the best title of the passage?
A. Dark Chocolate: A New Cure for Diabetes
B. Dark Chocolate: A Promising Healthy Diet
C. Could Dark Chocolate Reduce Your Risk of Diabetes?
D. What’s the Link Between Dark Chocolate and Health?
28. What was the reaction of the educational world to the US government’s ban on international students at Harvard?
A. They were happy about it.
B. They paid little attention to it.
C. They were shocked.
D. They supported the US government.
29. Why did the US government ban international students according to the passage?
