I grew up as an only child, enjoying free-range childhood adventures in nature. I would disappear into the forest, fascinated by the mysterious stories of animals around me. When I was about seven, I came across a little cat seriously injured by a board. The vet (兽医) examined her mouth and said, “She’s not going to make it.” I couldn’t understand how he knew that. That moment awakened my interest in understanding animals, and I decided to become a vet. I eventually earned a degree and spent over 25 years working as an environmental health scientist.
In 2017, concerns about antibiotic resistance (抗生素抗药性) led the US government to change laws, meaning beekeepers could no longer buy antibiotics over the counter; they now required a prescription (处方). This change inspired me to establish a veterinary practice specifically for bees—a unique field in the US.
As a bee vet, I assist beekeepers facing various issues in their hives (蜂箱). European foulbrood, a disease often detectable by its special sweet smell, is especially harmful to babies. The queen survives, but over weeks or months, the colony fails.
We’ve had terrible weather here. If bees are struggling to find food, it can put them at risk. Last February was really warm, and wild bees were coming out of hibernation (冬眠) only to find nothing for them to eat. This mismatch in timing is one of the leading risks to both honeybees and wild bees.
Honeybees are protected from some environmental pressures because we house them, we feed them, and we care for them. It is the wild bees that I’m extremely worried about—they depend on how well the environment is supporting them.
My first approach to learning this profession was books, but books can only take me so far. I feel like every bee is so precious now, especially early in the year. That is often when the wild bee queens are out and may be weak. Saving her can save a whole colony. So a lot is resting on that one bee: If I can help her, I will.
4. What inspired the author to become a vet?
A. The experiences of raising pet cats.
B. The joy of exploring nature as a child.
C. The need for a vet specializing in bees.
D. The words of a vet about an injured cat.
5. Why did the author establish a veterinary practice for bees?
A. The government banned antibiotics for bees.
B. Beekeepers needed prescriptions for antibiotics.
C. Bee diseases had become more difficult to treat.
D. Beekeeping had become more popular in the US.
6. According to the author, what is probably the deadliest threat to wild bees?
A. The overuse of antibiotics. B. The increased honey demands.
C. The abnormal weather patterns. D. The competition from farmed bees.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Vet’s Journey to Saving Bees B. A New Challenge for Beekeepers
C. The Hidden Dangers of Antibiotics D. The Concerning Loss of Bee Population
C
It was a freezing winter's day in London as customers crowded together at Blank Street, a coffee-shop chain. You might have expected them to pick up a warm cappuccino. Instead, many placed orders for iced matcha lattes (抹茶拿铁).
Such is the craze(狂热) for matcha that fans are willing to risk cold to get their hands on one. Blank Street claims that it sells some form of the green-tea-based drink "every four seconds" from its 80-odd shops in Britain and America. In Japan, one of the world's leading producers of matcha, the export value of tea in 2023 rose by 33% from the previous year. The global market for matcha-based products is worth around $4.24 billion and it is predicted that the number will grow by around 53% by 2029.
Matcha is made from ground leaves of tea trees. Tea culture developed in China during the Tang Dynasty. Myoan Eisai, a Japanese monk, came across it while travelling there and wrote a book stressing green tea's benefits. Matcha later spread through the upper class in Japan with the tea ceremony.
What explains the drink's newfound popularity outside Asia? Matcha fans promote it as an option superior to coffee as some studies suggest that green tea can help prevent heart disease and speed up metabolism(新陈代谢). It also gives a steady boost of energy, compared with the sudden increase and crash of a cup of coffee.
Gen Z—who drink less coffee than their elders, spend more time online and care about wellness—are seeking it out. The irony (有讽刺意味的情况) is that much of matcha's growth in the West is driven by flavoured matcha lattes, which are filled with sugar. The future may not be all that sweet, however. Tea production in Japan is decreasing, as the area of land is being used for farming; farmers are retiring and are put off by rising prices for fertiliser (肥料) and other essentials. Lovers of the trendy iced drink may soon feel a chill when it comes to their bill.
8. What does paragraph 2 suggest about matcha?
A. It has an unstable market. B. It is a low-profit business.
C. It is mainly produced in Japan. D. It is gaining global popularity.
9 What does the underlined part "superior to" in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Less realistic than. B. Rarer than.
C. More economical than. D. Better than.
10. What is the irony about matcha?
A. Its demand falls while sales figures rise.
B. Customers are fascinated by its bitter taste.
C. Health-seeking Gen Z choose sugary matcha lattes.
D. It's exported from Asia but surprisingly cheap in the West.
11. What may be the future problem for matcha lovers?
A. Matcha's poor quality. B. Matcha's rising prices.
C. Matcha's fewer varieties. D. Matcha's tasteless flavor.

“Generative AI has transformed education dramatically,” says senior study author Chin-Hsi Lin, an education technology researcher at the University of Hong Kong. Lin and his colleagues recruited postgraduate students from 14 regions who were studying in the U.K. and used AI in their work. The students were asked to come up with and explain a metaphor (隐喻) for the way generative AI impacted their academic writing.
By analyzing the responses, the researchers found four categories for how students were using and thinking about AI in their work. The most basic of these was the use of AI to check English grammar or format a reference list. Participants compared AI to aesthetic (美学的) enhancements such as makeup or high heels, or a mechanical tool such as a packaging machine or measuring tape.
In the next category, AI was more involved in the writing process itself. Some students used it to organize the logic of their writing; some equated it to Tesla’s Autopilot because it helped them stay on track.
In the third category, students used AI to more meaningfully transform their writing process and final product. Here, they called the technology a “bridge” or a “teacher” that could help them overcome cross-cultural boundaries in communication styles — especially important because academic writing is so often done in English.
In the fourth category, students’ metaphors highlighted the potential danger of AI. Some of the participants expressed discomfort with the way it enabled a lack of innovation or a lack of deeper understanding (like fast food, convenient but not nutritious). In this category, students most commonly considered it handy.
“Metaphors really matter, and they have shaped the public discourse (论述) for all kinds of new technologies,” says Emily Weinstein, a technology researcher. “The comparisons we use to talk about new technology can reveal our assumptions about how they work — and even our blind spots. There’s never only one right metaphor to talk about a new technology. When we try to assign just one metaphor to a new technology, we risk flattening it and overlooking both its benefits and dangers.”
12. What is the primary focus of the study conducted by Lin and his colleagues?
A. The moral concerns about AI in education.
B. The role of AI in postgraduates’ academic writing.
C. The effectiveness of AI in writing academic papers.
D. The impact of AI on students’ creativity in research.
13. Which aspect of AI does the third category of metaphors emphasize?
A. Its impact on narrowing cultural gaps.
B. Its method for enforcing language rules.
C. Its effect on simplifying technical language.
D. Its function of reducing academic workloads.
14. What concern is raised in the fourth category of metaphors?
A. AI’s highly addictive feature.
B. AI’s high costs and inaccessibility.
C. AI’s lack of creativity and inspiration.
D. AI’s ineffectiveness in academic writing.
15. What is Weinstein’s attitude towards using a single metaphor for Al?
A. Positive. B. Indifferent.
C. Unclear. D. Negative.

Talking comes naturally to most people in everyday life. ____16____ That’s different. Conversations are more than just words; they involve emotions, listening, and engagement. Without these, even the most talkative person can struggle to truly connect with others. Thankfully, the conversation is a skill you can learn and improve.
Prepare for the conversation.
People who prepare themselves for the conversation say they experienced fewer awkward pauses(停顿). So in the moments before a conversation starts, ask yourself: ____17____ What is the thing you hope to say? What is one question you will ask? The benefit of this exercise is that, simply by preparing what you’ll discuss, you’re likely to feel more confident.
Listen to understand.
Want to know how to talk to anyone without being awkward? Don’t just wait your turn to talk. The key to better conversations is actively listening, paying attention to both the content of what the person is saying and how they are saying it. ____18____
Show warmth with a smile.
____19____ It helps people feel welcomed and at ease (自在). However, not everyone smiles often. Some people may just have an angry face, and that isn’t a character flaw (缺陷). For these people, it’s even more important to remember to smile and keep open body language, especially important when meeting someone new.
____20____
Creating a natural give-and-take will make the conversation continue smoothly. This is particularly true when you talk about feelings. You don’t have to share anything you’re not comfortable with, but if someone says they are struggling with their work, sharing a struggle or two with your own can create a deeper connection.
A. Find ways to agree.
B. Give and take equally.
C. But really communicating?
D. What is the topic you might discuss?
E. A warm smile means “I am so happy to see you”.
F. That’s why you should learn how to focus and give your full attention.

It was a hot summer night in the town of Riverton, the kind of night where the air felt thick and heavy even without the rising smoke. Firefighter Tom Walsh and his team raced down Maple Street in their truck through the quiet town. Tom’s mind was focused on the fire ahead. As a firefighter for fifteen years, Tom was known not just for his courage, but for his soft spot for animals. He had rescued cats from storms, a bird from a collapsed (倒塌的) roof, and once even an escaped horse from the highway. But tonight’s fire was different.
As they arrived, the fire was burning the two-story house, painting the sky in shades of orange and black. On the front lawn (草坪) stood a family — two parents and their teenage children, all in pajamas (睡衣). The mother held her son’s arm, tears falling down her cheeks. The father took a step toward Tom, and his face was lighted by the glow of the fire.
“Please!” he said, pointing toward a side window. “Our dog Buster is trapped inside! He’s deaf — he couldn’t hear us call for him!”
Through the glass, Tom spotted movement. It was a golden retriever (金毛寻回犬),whose eyes widened with fear. Tom’s chest tightened. He knew that fear all too well. Years ago, he had lost his dog Max in a fire that had consumed his family’s old barn (谷仓). He could still remember the helplessness of knowing he couldn’t reach him in time. Not again, he thought.
Captain Reyes shouted at Tom, pulling his attention back to the moment. “Focus on the fire! The roof could collapse any minute!”
Tom hesitated. He understood the risk. But he quickly made up his mind. He wasn’t leaving without Buster. He ran around the back of the house. Smoke poured out of the kitchen door, filling the air with a heavy fog. Tom raised his boot and kicked the door hard. Then the door opened, and the light from the fire inside lit up the walls.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Heat enveloped him as he dropped low to the ground, crawling (爬行) beneath the thickening smoke.

Heat enveloped him as he dropped low to the ground, crawling (爬行) beneath the thickening smoke. The air was filled with the crackling of burning wood and acrid smoke. Tom’s eyes stung and his lungs burned, but he pressed on, calling out Buster’s name. Suddenly, he felt a brush against his leg. It was Buster, trembling but alive. Tom grabbed the dog and turned back. The heat was intense, and as he neared the door, part of the ceiling collapsed behind him. He burst out, gasping for air. Around him, fellow firefighters continued battling the blaze, their shouts barely audible over the roaring flames.
Seeing Tom and Buster, the family rushed forward. The mother fell to her knees, hugging Buster tightly, tears streaming down her face. “Thank you!” she sobbed. The father hugged Tom, his body shaking with emotion. Tom smiled weakly, “Just doing my job.” Captain Reyes approached, “You took a huge risk.” Tom nodded, watching the family’s reunion. The children gathered around their beloved pet, their small hands stroking Buster’s singed fur as the dog weakly wagged his tail. Saving Buster had been worth every danger, and in this moment of pure relief and joy, Tom felt the true meaning of his calling.
