As Elizabeth Stone once said, “Having children is like having your heart go walking around outside of your body.” You send them off to school and hope that the world treats them kindly because when they hurt, you hurt. Surely it’s unavoidable (不可避免的) that your child will experience hurt feelings at some point. So, it’s wise to be ready for those moments.
But what truly prepares you for the moment when the child you love so much unexpectedly heals (治愈) the wounds of your own inner child? A mom named Soogia, posted a video on TikTok explaining a phone call she received from a parent in her daughter’s classroom. The mom called to inform Soogia that their kids had been sharing lunch with each other.
Soogia wasn’t prepared for what came next. The classmate’s mother informed her that her son loved the food Soogia’s daughter brought to school and wanted to learn how to cook it too.
That may seem like a small thing to some, but the small gesture healed a little bit of Soogia’s inner child. Growing up as a Korean kid in California, Soogia had different experiences from her children.
“I guess I just never thought that my kids would be the generation of kids that could go to school and not just proudly eat, but share their food with other kids that were just so open,” Soogia said through tears. “They don’t sit there eating their food alone, feeling ashamed and wishing that their fried rice was bread instead or something like that. And I know, it sounds so small and it sounds so stupid, but knowing that their experience at school is so different from mine in such a positive way is just so hopeful.”
Soogia’s tearful video pulled at the heartstrings of her viewers who shared their thoughts in the comments.
“These Gen Alpha babies (千禧一代) really are a different, kinder generation. I love them so much,” someone revealed.
4. What is the purpose of quoting at the beginning of the passage?
A. To show the physical tiredness of raising children.
B. To describe the development of children’s personalities.
C. To stress parents’ constant concerns about their children.
D. To contrast the different feelings between parents and children.
5. Why did the classmate’s mother call Soogia?
A. To share the video taken by her son.
B. To ask about the recipe of the lunch her son liked.
C. To invite Soogia to cook lunch for the children together.

Research in Scientific Reports shows cats are better than human babies at a simple language comprehension test. Previous studies found that cats can recognize not only their own names but those of familiar humans and animals. But can they link words to objects?
To test this theory, Saho Takagi and her team gave 31 adult cats a simple word game used to test the same ability in human babies. They showed the cats two nine-second cartoon clips (电影片段), in which the cats’ owners repeated made-up words while the images were shown. These two clips — a red sun labeled “paramo” and a blue unicorn labeled “keraru” — were repeated until the cats got bored and paid 50% less attention to the screen.
After a short break, the clips were shown again, but this time, half of the pairings of words and images were changed. The changed clips visibly affected the cats. When “paramo” was shown with the unicorn and “keraru” was shown with the sun, the cats stared at the screen 15% longer. The cats were sensitive to this change and were clearly confused by it, which is good evidence that they had formed a link between the words and images.
The experiment revealed that the cats were able to learn the combinations from just two nine-second exposures — significantly faster than babies, who required at least four 20-second trials.
However, one should not read too much into these comparisons. “Comparing adult cats to baby isn’t fair as they are different species at different life stages,” said Dr. Carlo Siracusa, an animal behaviorist at the University of Pennsylvania. “Moreover, some cats were left out of the study, which caused bias (偏见) — not a fault of the research, and working with cats in experiments is difficult.” he added. Despite its limitations, the study does show that cats are capable of forming picture-word associations, although whether this is an inborn ability or a product of domestication (驯养) is unknown.
8. Cats’ picture-word association ability is proved by _______.
A. sudden refusal to watch the screen
B. complete loss of attention to the screen
C. longer staring duration when pairs changed
D. frequent physical interaction with the screen
9. What might be a possible limitation of the study according to the text?
A. The sample size of cats was too large.
B. Some cats were not included in the study.
C. The clips were too difficult for cats to understand.
D. The clips were too short to draw accurate conclusions.
10. Which of the following statements about the study is TRUE?
A. Cats’ ability to form associations is definitely inborn.
B. Cats learned the word-image combinations slower than babies.
C. The study is based on cats’ established name recognition ability.
D. The changed pairings of words and images had no effect on cats.
11. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A popular science magazine. B. A science fiction novel.
C. A children’s educational blog. D. An academic research paper.
C 9. B 10. C 11. A

The cats were sensitive to this change and were clearly confused by it, which is good evidence that they had formed a link between the words and images.
根据最后一段中“Moreover, some cats were left out of the study, which caused bias — not a fault of the research, and working with cats in experiments is difficult. (此外,一些猫咪未被纳入这项研究,这造成了偏见——这并非研究本身的过错,而且用猫咪做实验本就难度很大)”可知,部分猫未被纳入研究是该研究可能存在的局限性。故选B。

D
In 1240, the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Ⅱ built Castel del Monte on a lonely hill in central Puglia, where he had a perfect view of approaching enemies. He probably never imagined the enemies might be tourists one day. But these days, the old castle has been polished clean, and hundreds of multicolored Pullman buses snake up the winding roads to its grounds, now filled with T-shirt stands, Coca-Cola signs and a 200-car parking lot. All this thanks to the fact that UNESCO has designated (认定) it a World Heritage Site in 1996.
Officially, UNESCO honor s places that exemplify (是……的典范) an area’s ancestry, with the purpose of ensuring they are preserved. Unofficially, this designation is a kind of fairy dust that often turns little-known cultural sites into overnight tourist sensations. This is both a gift and a cuss. Lisa Mastny, senior adviser to the World Watch Institute, says, “tourism is double-edged for places considered of ‘outstanding value to humanity’. It offers many poor communities the chance to obtain financial rewards, but also threatens the very resources — human and natural — upon which the industry is ultimately built.”
There is growing awareness that assigning UNESCO designation is worthless — or worse, harmful — without some kind of follow-up preservation program. “In the early days there wasn’t much attention given to what would happen once these sites became World Heritage. But that’s changing slowly,” says Joseph King, director of the sites unit at the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM). In Africa, a 12-year training program is currently underway to teach locals not only how to preserve their immovable cultural heritage, but how to use it for economic development. In Eastern Europe, where tourism is a relatively new thing, cities are looking for help in figuring out where to draw the line between preserving historical centers and promoting urban development.
12. What can we learn about Castel del Monte?
A. It was originally built to enjoy the view.
B. It serves as a Coca-Cola distribution base.
C. It offers no practical value to the local economy.
D. It has transformed into a popular tourist destination.
13. Which word is closest in meaning to the underlined word “cuss” in paragraph 2?
A. Disaster. B. Relief. C. Solution. D. Opportunity.
14. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. All UNESCO-designated sites have received proper follow-up preservation.
B. The early UNESCO designations failed to consider the long-term impact on sites.
C. Economic benefits from tourism always outweigh environmental and cultural risks.
D. Africa and Eastern Europe are the only regions taking action on cultural preservation.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Is UNESCO Helpful in Driving Global Tourism?
B. How Can a Place Be Included in the UNESCO List?
C. Why Is It Important to Market World Heritage Site Tours?
D. Does Identifying World Heritage Sites Do More Harm Than Good?
D 13. A 14. B 15. D
根据第一段中“But these days, the old castle has been polished clean, and hundreds of multicolored Pullman buses snake up the winding roads to its grounds, now filled with T-shirt stands, Coca-Cola signs and a 200-car parking lot. All this thanks to the fact that UNESCO has designated (认定) it a World Heritage Site in 1996. (但现在,这座古老的城堡已被清理得一尘不染,数百辆色彩斑斓的普尔曼巴士沿着蜿蜒的道路驶向城堡的场地,现在这里摆满了T恤摊、可口可乐标志和一个能停200辆车的停车场。这一切都要归功于联合国教科文组织在1996年将其列为世界遗产)”可知,卡斯特尔德尔蒙特城堡如今已经变成了一个受欢迎的旅游胜地。故选D。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“Officially, UNESCO honors places that exemplify (是……典范) an area’s ancestry, with the purpose of ensuring they are preserved. Unofficially, this designation is a kind of fairy dust that often turns little-known cultural sites into overnight tourist sensations. This is both a gift and a cuss. (从官方角度看,联合国教科文组织表彰那些能体现一个地区祖先遗产的地方,目的是确保它们得到保护。从非官方角度看,这一称号就像一种仙尘,常常让鲜为人知的文化遗址一夜之间成为旅游热点。这既是礼物,也是cuss)”和下文“ Lisa Mastny, senior adviser to the World Watch Institute, says, “tourism is double-edged for places considered of ‘outstanding value to humanity’. It offers many poor communities the chance to obtain financial rewards, but also threatens the very resources — human and natural — upon which the industry is ultimately built.”(世界观察研究所(World Watch Institute)高级顾问Lisa Mastny表示:“对于那些被认为‘对人类具有突出价值’的地方来说,旅游业是一把双刃剑。它为许多贫困社区提供了获得经济回报的机会,但也威胁到该行业最终赖以建立的人力和自然资源。”)”可知,联合国教科文组织对文化遗址的认定既有好处也有坏处,由此可推测cuss与“Disaster”意思相近,意为“灾难”。故选A。
根据最后一段中“There is growing awareness that assigning UNESCO designation is worthless — or worse, harmful — without some kind of follow-up preservation program. “In the early days there wasn’t much attention given to what would happen once these sites became World Heritage. But that’s changing slowly,” says Joseph King, director of the sites unit at the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM).
根据第二段中“Officially, UNESCO honors places that exemplify (是……的典范) an area’s ancestry, with the purpose of ensuring they are preserved. Unofficially, this designation is a kind of fairy dust that often turns little-known cultural sites into overnight tourist sensations. This is both a gift and a cuss.

Thank you!
Film adaptations or original works?
Dear classmates,
Nowadays, more and more novels have been adapted into films.
Watching film adaptations has its advantages. Films bring stories to life with vivid visuals and sound effects, making them more engaging. They also save time compared to reading long books. However, reading original works allows us to explore the author’s deeper thoughts and imagination. Books provide more details and let us interpret the story in our own way.
Personally, I prefer reading books because they stimulate my imagination and offer a richer experience.
Thank you!

At 6:00 am, I stepped out of my car and into one of the hottest July days ever recorded in Houston. My T-shirt was soon wet with sweat as I waited in the parking lot. Experienced runners surrounded me, all wearing appropriate clothes for the intense heat. At the age of 53, I was about to train for my first half marathon. This was my plan for building friendships in an unknown city.
Houston was quite different from Southern California where I grew up, went to college, married, and raised two daughters. Moving here due to my husband’s job transfer(调动) was a real challenge, especially at a time when many of my friends were thinking about retirement. With my daughters grown, gone were the days of PTA meetings, team mom duties, and attending my children’s high school events. How could I make any friends in a city where I hardly knew anyone? What would each day look like? Would my two aging dogs be my only companions(伙伴)?
The answer arrived when Annie, the real estate agent, unexpectedly called me one day. “Dana, would you be interested in joining the local chapter of USA Fit here in town?” Honestly, I had no idea what she was talking about. What I did know was that Annie was a runner. I had even heard her mention marathons before.
“What does it involve? I mean, is this about running? But that’s just not my thing.” I was hoping she would hear the disinterest in my voice. Not Annie! She didn’t give up easily. “Come on! You’ll love it! It’s a group of runners and walkers who meet for six months, training for the Houston Marathon and Half Marathon. You’ll make friends, Dana. Trust me.”
Excuses raced through my mind, but Annie’s promise of potential friendships won me over. The prospect of connecting with others who shared a common goal was irresistible and soon I found myself standing among the “purple people”, the group of half marathon walkers, on that first training day.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
The experienced walkers welcomed me with open arms.

On the race day, I felt both physically and emotionally prepared.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The expertenced walkers welcomed me with open arms. For the next six months, my group members never left my side. They patiently taught me the basics of finishing a half marathon. They emphasized the importance of pacing, stretching, proper footwear and listening to my body. Every Saturday we took training courses together and shared stories of our lives, while pursuing the goal of completing the half marathon. Gradually, I came to believe I could walk the half marathon at the rapid pace required by the sponsors.
On the race day. I felt both physically and emotionally prepared. As I set off, I reminded myself of all the training sessions that had prepared me for this moment. And whenever doubt appeared. a friendly voice from the group would shout, “You’ve got this, Dana!” Their encouragement and firm belief pushed me forward step by step. Eventually, I completed my first half marathon. As I stood among my “purple people”, exchanging sweaty hugs and smiles of victory. I knew that beyond the physical achievement. I had found a community where I belonged and made lifelong good friends.

D. To inform Soogia of her daughter’s understanding behavior at school.
6. What makes Soogia feel comforted?
A. Her child is popular on TikTok.
B. Her child can enjoy sharing meals with classmates.
C. Her child has gained friendship and recognition at school.
D. Her child needn’t feel ashamed of their cultural background.
7. What can we infer about Soogia’s opinion of the new generation of children?
A. Open-minded and accepting. B. Caring and persistent.
C. Adventurous and decisive. D. Friendly and determined.

However one should not read too much into these comparisons.

B. complete loss of attention to the screen
C. longer staring duration when pairs changed
D. frequent physical interaction with the screen

Going to the gym can be something that many people find a tiring experience. ___16___ Most weight-related exercises require 6–8 repetitions per set, performed consistently over three months to get results. Besides, there is nothing more boring than endless running on a running machine.
But what if there were a way to ease the boredom of exercise while still getting a good work out? ___17___ In the past, “playing video games was a sedentary (久坐不动的) experience,” says Jo Stauffer of the VR Health Institute, “but VR changes all of that”.
Trust me.”
Excuses raced through my mind but Annie’s promise of potential friendships won me over. The prospect of connecting with others who shared a common goal was irresistible and soon I found myself standing among the “purple people”, the group of half marathon walkers, on that first training day.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
The experienced walkers welcomed me with open arms.
