Rome can be pricey for travelers, which is why many choose to stay in a hostel (旅社). The hostels in Rome offer a bed in a dorm room for around $25 a night, and for that, you’ll often get to stay in a central location (位置) with security and comfort.
Yellow Hostel
If I had to make just one recommendation for where to stay in Rome, it would be Yellow Hostel. It’s one of the best-rated hostels in the city, and for good reason. It’s affordable, and it’s got a fun atmosphere without being too noisy. As an added bonus, it’s close to the main train station.
Hostel Alessandro Palace
If you love social hostels, this is the best hostel for you in Rome. Hostel Alessandro Palace is fun. Staff members hold plenty of bar events for guests like free shots, bar crawls and karaoke. There’s also an area on the rooftop for hanging out with other travelers during the summer.
Youth Station Hostel
If you’re looking for cleanliness and a modern hostel, look no further than Youth Station. It offers beautiful furnishings and beds. There are plenty of other benefits, too; it doesn’t charge city tax; it has both air conditioning and a heater for the rooms; it also has free Wi-Fi in every room.
Hotel and Hostel Des Artistes
Hotel and Hostel Des Artistes is located just a 10-minute walk from the central city station and it’s close to all of the city’s main attractions. The staff is friendly and helpful, providing you with a map of the city when you arrive, and offering advice if you require some. However, you need to pay 2 euros a day for Wi-Fi.
21. What is probably the major concern of travelers who choose to stay in a hostel?
A. Comfort. B. Security.
C. Price. D. Location.
22. Which hotel best suits people who enjoy an active social life?
A. Yellow Hostel. B. Hostel Alessandro Palace.
C. Youth Station Hostel. D. Hotel and Hostel Des Artistes.
23. What is the disadvantage of Hotel and Hostel Des Artistes?

On Saturday 24 August 1918, it was raining cats and dogs and thundering over a city called Sunderland on the northeast coast of England. The storm lasted for only about ten minutes. People were surprised to see that it was not just rainwater falling from the sky. There were fish falling down, too! People came out to find out what was happening. They could not believe their own eyes. There were thousands of fish — sand eels— lying on the ground. They were about seven centimeters long, and all were frozen solid.
Sand eels swim together in large groups, often in sandy water, and are often found in large numbers in the North Sea, which reaches out to the east of Sunderland. How was it possible for these sand eels to fall from the sky and land on Sunderland?
Scientists believed the heavy thunderstorm that afternoon may have caused a waterspout. Waterspouts can be formed when strong winds move quickly in a circle over water. They are so powerful; anything less than one meter in length can be taken into them and forced into the clouds. The clouds carry whatever has been taken into them for long distances — sometimes over 150 kilometers. It’s very cold up there and everything soon freezes solid.
For hundreds of years there have been reports of small animals being taken into the sky through waterspouts. In 2009, dead tadpoles rained down on the city of Nanao in Japan. In 2012, fifty kilos of prawns fell from the sky over Sri Lanka. In 2017, fish fell on the coastal city of Tampico In Mexico.
It must be a very strange experience to see fish raining down on you. It would probably hurt if one fell on your head! With climate change, global warming and many reports of terrible natural disasters, will the time ever come when it may really begin to rain cats and dogs?
24. What was the rain like on 24 August 1918?
A. It was very heavy. B. It fell around England.
C. It lasted quite a long time. D. It caused many human deaths.
25. What do we know about the sand eels that landed on Sunderland?
A. They were few in number. B. They came in different sizes.
C. They were still alive when landing. D. They probably came from the North Sea.
26. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Clouds. B. Waterspouts. C. Strong winds. D. The waters of the sea.
27. In the end, what does the author probably care most about?
A. Our health. B. Our environment.
C. The wild animals. D. The news reports.

Destructive earthquakes rock the world from time to time. Nothing can be done to prevent them from striking. The best way to ease these future disasters is to draw maps of the underworld, recording every fault (断层) and tracking its behavior.
To create those maps, researchers employ machines that sense and record all sorts of vibrations (震动). This work, historically, has sometimes been inaccurate. When Zachary Ross, an assistant geophysics professor, started in the field in the early 2010s, he tried to find a new way forward. “Even the best computer programs at the time missed certain earthquakes. There had to be a better way,” he says. He made the study in California which is so geologically active and there were more data than human experts alone could reasonably handle.
In 2017 Ross started to focus on tiny quakes. They might be harmless, but that doesn’t make them unimportant — their waves can explain each fault they pass through, including the more precarious, stressloaded ones that may one day crack and set off a disaster. Ross and his colleagues set an algorithm (算法) upon the seismic (地震的) record. The algorithm quickly identified nearly two million previously hidden tiny quakes.
However, his program could only find earthquakes in the seismic record that it was taught to recognize. So Ross turned to more advanced tools: selflearning programs, software that could make predictions about the future — in this case, what a greatly wider variety of earthquakes might sound like. Very quickly, these programs found all sorts of unfamiliar-sounding quakes — later confirmed by human scientists.
These AI learning programs can also be used to improve the speed and accuracy (精确度) of earthquake earlywarning systems — largely autonomous (自主的) programs that forecast threats to life and property in the moments after an earthquake starts and send people emergency text messages before seismic waves reach them. But for all their promise, AI programs won’t replace human scientists. “They’re just tools,” Ross says — ones that in time, he believes, will become as ordinary as seismometers (地震仪) themselves.
28. What inspired Ross to carry out the new study?
A. The massive amounts of data available.
B. The geographical location of California.
C. The limitation of the traditional method.
D. The breakdown of the computer programs.
29. What does the underlined word “precarious” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Unusual. B. Unstable.
C. Inaccessible. D. Informal.
30. What is the advantage of selflearning programs over Ross’ algorithm?
A. They forecast new earthquakes.
B. They help restore hidden faults.
C. They rely on previous information.
D. They use the best computer programs.
31. What do we know about the AI programs from the last paragraph?
A. They will replace seismometers.
B. They serve as an efficiency booster.
C. They reduce the threats to life and property.
D. They prevented seismic waves from reaching people.

With the young unable to afford to leave home and the old at risk of isolation(孤独), more families are choosing to live together.
The doorway to peace and quiet, for Nick Bright at least, leads straight to his mother-in-law, she lives on the ground floor, while he lives upstairs with his wife and their two daughters.
Four years ago they all moved into a three-storey Victorian house in Bristol - one of a growing number of multigenerational families in the UK living together under the same roof. They share a front door and a washing machine, but Rita Whitehead has her own kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living room on the ground floor.
“We floated the idea to my mum of sharing at a house,” says Kathryn Whitehead. Rita cuts in: “We spoke more with Nick because I think it’s a big thing for Nick to live with his mother-in-law.”
And what does Nick think? “From my standpoint, it all seems to work very well. Would I recommend it? Yes, I think I would.”
It’s hard to tell exactly how many people agree with him, but research indicates that the numbers have been rising for some time. Official reports suggest that the number of households with three generations living together had risen from 325,000 in 2001to 419,000 in 2013.
Other varieties of multigenerational family are more common. Some people live with their elderly parents; many more adult children are returning to the family home, if they ever left. It is said that about 20% of 25-34-year-olds live with their parents, compared with 16% in 1991.The total number of all multigenerational households in Britain is thought to be about 1.8 million.
Stories like that are more common in parts of the world where multigenerational living is more firmly rooted. In India, particularly outside cities, young women are expected to move in with their husband’s family when they get married.
32. Who mainly uses the ground floor in the Victorian house in Bristol?
A Nick. B. Rita. C. Kathryn D. The daughters.
33. What is Nick’s attitude towards sharing the house with his mother-in -law?
A. Positive. B. Carefree. C. Tolerant. D. Unwilling.
34. What is the author’s statement about multigenerational family based on?
A. Family traditions. B. Financial reports. C. Published statistics. D. Public opinions.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. Lifestyles in different countries. B. Conflicts between generations.
C. A housing problem in Britain. D. A rising trend of living in the UK.

It was somewhere between spring and summer and my mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then, I was 13 years old, and always felt unhappy with Mom. But I didn’t know that this trip was going to be a special one.
A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose heavenly fragrance(香味)filled the car. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom stopped the car. “What are you doing?” I shouted, fearing that the car had broken down and we’d be trapped there, so far from home. But that wasn’t the case. My mom jumped out of the car, grabbing(抓)the flowers from the back seat. “It’ll just be a minute,” she called back through the open windows.
I impatiently looked at the side of the road before finding a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, a little annoyed, as my mom reappeared ——empty- handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, “Do you know someone there?” She shook her head. “Then what did you do with the flowers?” She smiled slightly, “I gave them to the receptionist (前台接待员).” “What?” She laughed at my confusion. “I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially those who haven’t gotten any in a while.”
I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we continued our driving, I spoke again, “Did you leave your name?” To this, she answered instantly, “No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me.”
Suddenly, still thinking about Mom’s deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn’t know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by, since we had seen so few people along the way.

A 25. D 26. B 27. B
根据第一段中“On Saturday 24 August 1918, it was raining cats and dogs and thundering over a city called Sunderland on the northeast coast of England.(1918年8月24日星期六,雨下得很大,在英格兰东北海岸一个叫桑德兰的城市上空轰鸣)”可知,1918年8月24日的雨下得很大。rain cats and dogs 表示“倾盆大雨”,故选A。
根据第二段中“Sand eels swim together in large groups, often in sandy water, and are often found in large numbers in the North Sea, which reaches out to the east of Sunderland.(沙鳗经常成群结队地在沙质水域中游动,经常大量出现在一直延伸到桑德兰东部的北海)”可知,降落在桑德兰的沙鳗可能来自北海。
根据画线词上文“Scientists believed the heavy thunderstorm that afternoon may have caused a waterspout. Waterspouts can be formed when strong winds move quickly in a circle over water. They are so powerful; anything less than one meter in length can be taken into”(科学家认为那天下午的大雷雨可能造成了水龙卷。
根据最后一段中“With climate change, global warming and many reports of terrible natural disasters, will the time ever come when it may really begin to rain cats and dogs?(随着气候变化、全球变暖和许多可怕的自然灾害的报道,真有一天会下起倾盆大雨吗?)”
C
C The limitation of the traditional method.
C 29. B 30. A 31. B
根据第二段中的“When Zachary Ross, an assistant geophysics professor, started in the field in the early 2010s, he tried to find a new way forward. “Even the best computer programs at the time missed certain earthquakes. There had to be a better way,” he says. (地球物理学助理教授扎卡里·罗斯在2010年代初进入该领域时,试图找到一条新的研究路径。他说:“即使是当时最好的计算机程序也会漏掉某些地震。一定有更好的方法。”)”可知,传统方法的局限性(计算机程序漏检地震)促使罗斯开展新研究。故选C项。
29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“They might be harmless, but that doesn’t make them unimportant — their waves can explain each fault they pass through, including the more precarious, stressloaded ones that may one day crack and set off a disaster (它们可能是无害的,但这并不意味着它们不重要——它们的波浪可以解释它们所经历的每一个断层,包括那些更precarious、压力更大的断层,这些断层有朝一日可能会破裂并引发灾难)”可知,这些断层有一天可能会破裂并引发灾难,说明它们是不稳定的,所以画线词precarious的意思是“不稳定的”,与“unstable”同义。
根据第四段中的“Very quickly, these programs found all sorts of unfamiliarsounding quakes—later confirmed by human scientists.(很快,这些程序就发现了各种听起来不熟悉的地震——后来得到了人类科学家的证实。)” 故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“These AI learning programs can also be used to improve the speed and accuracy of earthquake earlywarning systems — largely autonomous programs that forecast threats to life and property in the moments after an earthquake starts and send people emergency text messages before seismic waves reach them.(这些AI学习程序还可用于提高地震预警系统的速度和精度——预警系统是高度自主的程序,能在地震发生后立即预测对生命和财产的威胁,并在地震波到达前向人们发送紧急短信。)”
D
A. Nick. B. Rita. C. Kathryn D. The daughters.
33. What is Nick’s attitude towards sharing the house with his mother-in -law?
A. Positive. B. Carefree. C. Tolerant. D. Unwilling.
34. What is the author’s statement about multigenerational family based on?
A. Family traditions. B. Financial reports. C. Published statistics. D. Public opinions.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. Lifestyles in different countries. B. Conflicts between generations.
C. A housing problem in Britain. D. A rising trend of living in the UK.
B 33. A 34. C 35. D
根据第三段“ but Rita Whitehead has her own kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living room on the ground floor.”
根据第五段“And what does Nick think? “From my standpoint, it all seems to work very well. Would I recommend it? Yes, I think I would.”可知,尼克是怎么想的?“从我的角度来看,一切都很顺利。我推荐它吗?是的,我想我会推荐在一起居住的。”由此判断出,尼克对和和岳母合住房子的态度是积极的。故选A项。
根据第六段“ Official reports suggest that the number of households with three generations living together had risen from 325,000 in 2002 to 419,000 in 2013.” 根据第七段“It is said that about 20% of 25-34-year-olds live with their parents, compared with 16% in 1991.The total number of all multigenerational households in Britain is thought to be about 1.8 million.”

It was somewhere between spring and summer, and my mom and I were driving through the countryside.
注意:1. 续写的短文的词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1
We were worrying about what could be done.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2
As we drove along, a flower shop came into sight on the road.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
We were worrying about what could be done. But after waiting in vain for a considerable time, mom and I decided to walk back the road to the nursing home and seek help. God knows how far we had driven! When we arrived, the receptionist was surprised, but warmly helped us contact the garage. There, the old men who had received the flowers were excited to meet us, talking about how great that day was. It amazed me what random actions of kindness could mean to the people who received it. While we were laughing and talking merrily, the garage got our car repaired.
As we drove along, a flower shop came into sight on the road. I asked my mom to stop the car and then I paced quickly into the flower shop, where a bunch of flowers glowing red in full bloom caught my eye. Having witnessed the effect of kindness, I decided to send mom the sweet flowers. Soon, the heavenly scent filled the car again. Mom tried to cancel her excitement, but she glittering tears failed her. Through this trip, I discovered that, despite my occasional anger towards her, I actually felt proud of her. This was the trip of my life.
