Thai wildlife officials have laid out a plan to bring peace to a central Thai city after at least a decade of human-monkey conflict (冲突).
The monkeys that hang around Lopburi are a major tourist draw. But after years of conflicts with residents and visitors, and several failed attempts to bring peace with population controls, local people and businesses have had enough.
The monkeys often try to take food from humans, sometimes leaving people with injuries. In March a woman got her knee hurt after a monkey pulled her off her feel, and another man was knocked off a motorcycle by a hungry monkey.
The authorities hope to catch some 2,500 monkeys and place them in massive wildlife preserves, said Athapol Charoenshunsa, the director-general of the Department of National parks, Wildlife and plant Conservation. They’ll work with wildlife experts to find a way for a limited number of monkeys to stay freely in the city, he added.
“I don’t want humans to have to hurt monkeys, and I don’t want monkeys to have to hurt humans,” he told reporters during a news conference in Bangkok. “I expect the first period of the operation to start within weeks, and I believe the wildlife preserve will be able to contain (容纳) thousands of them and will solve the problem very quickly.”
Athapol said they are also working in other areas of Thailand that are facing problems with monkeys. He said 52 of the country’s 77 provinces often report monkey problems.
The monkeys are said to be a symbol of the province, about 140 kilometers north of Bangkok, where the ancient Three Pagodas temple celebrates a yearly “Monkey Buffet” festival. However, some have complained about the city’s monkey troubles on tourists and residents feeding the animals, which they say drew monkeys into the city, helped with their numbers, and got them used to getting food from humans.
4. What does the underlined phrase “have had enough” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. They are fond of those moneys. B. They hope to feed more monkeys.
C. They are troubled by those monkeys. D. They want to protect those monkeys.
5. How will the authorities deal with those monkeys?
A. Cut off the monkey’s food supply. B. Catch them for use as research subjects.
C. Enclose them in a zoo to entertain tourists. D. Cut down the numbers of them in the town.
6. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The significance of those monkeys.
B People’s different opinions on those monkeys.
C. The environmental problems caused by those monkeys.
D. Reasons why monkeys become a symbol of the province.
7. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Thailand Residents Suffered from Too Many Tourists
B. Thailand Decides to Limit Monkeys in Tourist Town
C. Monkeys Serve Special Meaning in the Thailand Town
D. People in Thailand Try to Improve the Life of Monkeys

Have you ever seen a car without a driver? It sounds crazy, but these computer-driven driverless car s will soon be filling roads near you. Tech companies around the world have been designing and testing driverless vehicles and the technology is available already.
So, how do they work? The cars are covered in sensors that can detect other cars and obstacles on the road. Sensors on the wheels also help when parking. Road signs are read by cameras, and satellite navigation systems are used. Finally, a central computer system takes in all the information and processes this to work out when to accelerate, brake and steer. All you have to do is type in the destination.
Sounds like your idea of heaven? Siting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film while “driving” will all be possible with this new technology. In addition, computers are generally more efficient drivers than humans, meaning emissions can be reduced. They also drive more safely than people—they don’t get distracted by music or friends, they obey the speed limit and they have quicker reaction times in case of an emergency.
However, there are still many drawbacks of driverless cars. Computers will have difficulties making ethical(道德上的) decisions. If a child ran out into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or turn aside sharply and potentially hurt the car’s passengers instead? Moreover, I personally find driving fun. I’d miss never being behind the wheel myself. There would also be legal questions. Should children or drunk people, be allowed in a driverless car by themselves? Or would there need to be a responsible adult with a driving licence in the car at all times?
Although being driven around by a machine would perhaps mean that no one needs a driving license, many people would be put out of a job by the population of driverless cars. Bus, taxi and train drivers would be made redundant.
I’m not convinced I’d want a driverless car, let it’s only a matter of time before they’ll become more affordable and commonplace on our roads.
8. What do you need to do when using a driverless car?
A. Control the sensors. B. Read the road signs carefully.
C. Put the address into the computer. D. Check the satellite navigation systems.
9. How does the author analyze the shortcomings of driverless cars?
A. By making a comparison. B. By raising some questions.
C. By sharing personal experiences. D. By analyzing their harmful effects.
10. What is the underlined word “redundant” closest in meaning to?
A. Replaceable. B. Crucial. C. Distinctive. D. Unwanted.
11. What does the author think of future driverless cars?
A They will be less expensive. B. They will consume less energy.
C. They will do more harm than good. D. They will be more strictly controlled.
D
In many parts of the world there may not be much rainfall, but there is a fair amount of water vapor (水蒸气) in the air — particularly at night. An experimental new device draws in that vapor and uses it to water eatable plants.
Known as the SmartFarm, the small device was designed by a team at the National University of Singapore led by Prof. Tan Ching and aimed to address two of the world’s biggest problems — water shortage and food shortage. It’s a transparent (透明的) box that has vegetable plants growing in soil on the bottom — on the top, a hydrogel panel (水凝胶面板) lies under a solar-powered motorized (机动的) cover.
The hydrogel can easily draw water vapor from the cool night air when the cover is open. An integrated timer closes it at daybreak, with the sunlight heating the hydrogel through the clear cover. The gel responds by releasing its stored water in the form of vapor, which turns into liquid on the inside of the cover. When that cover regularly slides open in the day, the liquid gets wiped off along the inside walls of the box and runs down into the soil.
According to scientists, the gel can absorb up to 300 times its weight in water at night. During the day, it releases that water at an hourly rate of 2.24 grams of water per gram of gel. The whole process doesn’t involve any human work and thus cuts the cost. Besides, the released water proves to be suitable to drink.
Prof. Tan said, “The SmartFarm device greatly reduces farms’ demand for water and is suitable for urban farming techniques such as rooftop farming. This is an important step forward in easing water and food shortage.” However, he also noted that it can be further improved with additional functions before it moves to mass and commercial production. For example, it can add wireless networking to enable users to monitor the process using smartphones.
12. What is the main purpose of designing SmartFarm?
A. Increasing food production.
B. Collecting rainwater for farms.
C. Monitoring the growth of crops.
D. Drawing water vapor from the air for crops.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about concerning the SmartFarm?
A. How it works. B. Why hydrogel is applied.
C. What materials are needed. D. Why it needs a cover.
14. What can be concluded about the SmartFarm from paragraph 4?
A. It is difficult to operate. B. It is effective.
C. It is nonmotorized. D. It is expensive.
15. What does Prof. Tan suggest about the SmartFarm in the last paragraph?
A. It needs further improvement.
B. It can be marketed immediately.
C. It is only suitable for urban farming.
D. It opens up urban farming.

任务型阅读
Eric was working in a selling business. He had been on the road visiting people for more than a month without going home. He couldn’t wait to get back to see his wife and children. It was coming up on Mother’s Day, and he usually tried to make it “back home”, but this year he was just too busy and too tired. The day when he was driving in a small town, he saw a flower shop. He said to himself, “I know what I will do. I’ll send my mother some roses.”
He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a young man talking to the girl in it. “How many roses can I get for five dollars, Miss?” the young man asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the young man would be happy with something else.
“No. I have to have roses,” he said. “My mom was badly sick last year and I didn’t get to spend much time with her. I want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because that is her favorite.” He was stubborn.
The girl in the shop looked up at Eric and was just shaking her head. Something inside of Eric was touched by the boy’s voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. Eric had been lucky in his business, and he looked at the girl and silently said that he would pay for the young man’s roses.
The girl looked at the young man and said, “OK, I will give you a dozen red roses for your dollars.” The young man almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran down the store. It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement.
Eric ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have it delivered to his mother. After that, with a relief he drove down the road. Not long after his driving,he saw the young man walking to a graveyard (墓地).

B. People’s different opinions on those monkeys.
C. The environmental problems caused by those monkeys.
D. Reasons why monkeys become a symbol of the province.
7. Which is the most suitable title for the text?

A. They will be less expensive. B. They will consume less energy.
C. They will do more harm than good. D. They will be more strictly controlled.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. A

Or would there need to be a responsible adult with a driving licence in the car at all times?( 然而,无人驾驶汽车仍然存在许多缺点。 B选项“By raising some questions.( 通过提出一些问题。)”符合题意。故选B。
【10题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词前面的句子“Although being driven around by a machine would perhaps mean that no one needs a driving license, many people would be put out of a job by the population of driverless cars. (虽然由机器驾驶可能意味着没有人需要驾驶执照,但无人驾驶汽车的数量将使许多人失业。)” 可知,无人驾驶汽车的出现可能会让很多人失业,因此公共汽车、出租车、火车等司机的工作可能会变得不再被需要。故划线词与D选项“Unwanted.(不需要的)”为同义词。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“I’m not convinced I’d want a driverless car, let it’s only a matter of time before they’ll become more affordable and commonplace on our roads.( 我不太确定我是否会想要一辆自动驾驶汽车,但它的普及和价格下降只是时间问题,它们将变得在我们的道路上更加普遍和负担得起。)” 可知,作者认为无人驾驶汽车迟早会变得更便宜更常见。故选A。

14 What can be concluded about the SmartFarm from paragraph 4?
A. It is difficult to operate. B. It is effective.
C. It is nonmotorized. D. It is expensive.
15. What does Prof. Tan suggest about the SmartFarm in the last paragraph?
A. It needs further improvement.
B. It can be marketed immediately.
C. It is only suitable for urban farming.
D. It opens up urban farming.

第四部分 任务型阅读(满分20分)
