Imagine cities where buildings breathe like plants, streets flow like rivers, and neighborhoods develop naturally like forests. This vision is becoming real as urban designers use nature-inspired ideas like biomimicry, permaculture (永久农业), and Feng Shui. Ancient wisdom inspires modern solutions:
Biomimicry
The Eastgate Centre in Zimbabwe copies termite mounds to stay cool. Its thick brick walls absorb heat by day and release it at night. Cool air flows in through openings at the bottom, lowering temperatures naturally. This avoids costly air conditioning, saving over 50% energy and $3.5 million compared to traditional building.
Permaculture
Christchurch’s Ōtākaro Orchard creates self-sustaining food systems after a 2011 earthquake. This project features 5 public food forests, 26 community gardens, 70 food-producing gardens in schools, and 26,000 fruit trees on public land, which help make sure there’s enough food in case of disasters.
Feng Shui
Feng Shui makes people and their surroundings work well together by balancing the flow of energy, or chi. In Hong Kong, buildings are put near natural things to bring good energy. The Bank of China Tower uses triangular shapes to help things grow, and the International Commerce Centre has round edges for smooth energy flow.
Old Ideas, New Uses
Long ago, the Aztecs made floating gardens. Egyptians built cool houses. Now, Singapore beautifully mixes these old ideas with new ones in its Gardens by the Bay, applying biomimicry, permaculture, and Feng Shui.
Looking Ahead
When cities work with nature, they save energy, grow food, and feel peaceful Want to help? Join Earth Day’s talks about clean energy.

Li Dongju, a 66-year-old grandmother from Zhengzhou, has cycled alone through 12 countries across Asia, Europe, and Australia. Her journey began in 2013 when she saw cyclists speeding past. “Before cycling, I was like a frog in a well,” she recalls. “Now I’m a wild wolf — free and fearless!”
In 2005, Li divorced. She struggled with depression for years. With only 3,000 yuan monthly pension (退休金), Li budgeted carefully. To save money, she worked as a cleaner and hotel dishwasher. Her son gifted her a folding bike, and she traveled cheaply by camping or staying with locals. Her first Southeast Asia trip left her alone in Vietnam after losing her group. Undeterred, she continued to bike across China, accompanied only by her brown pet dog Xili.
In 2017, Li returned to Southeast Asia, this time better equipped with a smartphone and a travel plan. Her companions chose to return home after three weeks, but Li pressed on, cycling through Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar. By 2019, she was ready for her most ambitious challenge yet: cycling through six European countries over 66 days.
In November, she flew to Australia. As she cycled along the Pacific Highway, a quiet coastal road, she spotted smoke shooting from nearby brush and alerted the local police with a video she shot, preventing a serious fire from developing. “I was so proud of myself.” Li said. “I felt like I’d done a little bit for Australia.”
Though she lost her backpack once, she remembers most the strangers’ kindness and brings Chinese knots to show gratitude to all those who have helped her out of trouble during travelling. When the pandemic held up her travels in 2020, Li realized she’d stopped taking pills for depression. Now planning to ride from Kazakhstan to UAE, she aims for 100 countries “Travel is like a drug,” she smiles. “Once you taste it, you can’t stop.”
4. What initially inspired Li Dongju’s cycling journey?
A. Her doctor’s suggestion. B. Her son’s encouragement.
C. Seeing passing cyclists. D. Recalling the travel journal.
5. What does the underlined word “Undeterred” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Not determined. B. Not discouraged.
C. Not identified. D. Not injured.
6. What did Li do to prevent a fire in Australia?
A. Sound the alarm nearby. B. Put out the fire with water.
C. Inform the police with a video. D. Guide firefighters to the scene.
7. Which of the following best describes Li’s bike journey?
A. Tough but life-changing. B. Lonely but comfortable.
C. Costly but rewarding. D. Brief but meaningful.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. C 7. A

The small Paris café was filled with the bitter smell of coffee and people’s chatting. I sat across from Charles Strickland at a wooden table. Once a wealthy businessman in fine suits, he now wore an old coat with white paint on its sleeves.
When I asked him why he abandoned his wife and two children and moved to this place, he remained calm and cold, explaining that painting had become as important to him as breathing to a living creature. Forty years old as he was, he believed this was his final opportunity to change his life. “My relatives will take care of my family,” he said without any guilt, as if his children were strangers he had met only once.
For more than a year, he had lied to his wife by telling her he was playing cards with friends in the evenings, but in reality he was taking art classes to learn painting. With his hands shaking slightly, he said in an urgent voice, “I have to paint. When a man falls into the water, it doesn’t matter how he swims: he has to get out or else he’ll drown.”
When I asked him “What will you do if you never become successful?” he just repeated, “I have to paint.” His strong determination, which showed no sign of doubt or regret, made it clear that he had completely turned down the normal rules of society.
Looking at his worn shoes and fingers with different colors of paint, I finally said, “You have become a heartless man.” To my surprise, he just stood up calmly, adjusted his old hat, and suggested, “Let’s go find somewhere to eat.” Around us, waiters cleared tables while people laughed and drank coffee. These happy sounds felt strange after our serious talk, like sunshine breaking through storm clouds.
8. What do we know about Strickland’s life in Paris?
A. He sought social recognition.
B. He made friends in cafe easily.
C. He felt lonely after leaving his family.
D. He lived poorly but pursued painting.
9. What metaphor (隐喻) does Strickland use to explain his situation in paragraph 3?
A. A drowning man struggling to survive.
B. A shaking hand indicating urgency.
C. A strong breath essential for life.
D. A friendly player in a card game.
10. Which of the following best describes Strickland?
A. Indifferent but guilty. B. Cold but determined.
C. Selfish but traditional. D. Stubborn but regretful.
11. Which real-life situation reflects the passage?
A. A runner trains for medals with pain.
B. A scientist breaks rules for discovery.
C. A student attends school for sports career.
D. A banker writes despite family opposition.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. B 11. D

Curiosity, the rover (探测器) has found strong evidence that Mars once had a carbon cycle — a process crucial for sustaining life. While examining rocks in Gale Crater, the rover discovered siderite, a special mineral that forms when carbon mixes with iron. This suggests Mars’ environment long ago was similar to early Earth’s. The discovery, published in Science on April 17, makes scientists hopeful that future Mars samples might show signs of past life.
Lead researcher Ben Tutolo, from the University of Calgary, described the excitement about the discovery: “When we realized these rocks contained so much siderite, I knew its significance immediately.” For Earth, carbon cycle has been key to its habitability — cycling carbon between the air, oceans, and rocks, thus providing the key material for all living things and setting the suitable atmosphere. Mars, despite signs of ancient water, had never shown evidence of carbonates until now. Finding rocks with 5-10% siderite means Mars had a hidden carbon source we didn’t know about.
Since landing in 2012, Curiosity has been exploring Gale Crater, drilling into rocks and analyzing them. Recent tests found not just siderite but also magnesium sulfate salts (镁硫酸盐), which may have hidden the carbonates from satellites. Tutolo thinks similar minerals could exist all over Mars, possibly storing much of the planet’s lost CO2 — a gas that once kept Mars warm.
However, Mars’ carbon cycle appears to have been unstable. Unlike Earth, Mars has no plate tectonics (板块构造运动) to recycle carbon. Instead, acidic water (PH<7) may have trapped CO2 in rocks, causing the atmosphere to slowly disappear. Over time, this turned Mars into the cold, dry desert we see today — right around the same period when life was first starting on Earth.
Although the mission to bring Mars samples back to Earth is delayed, Curiosity keeps studying the planet’s rocks. The siderite discovery helps explain Mars’ unique carbon cycle, which weakened as the planet cooled. While it’s still unclear whether this prevented life, the findings provide critical insights into Mars’ history.
12. What is the significance of the siderite discovery on Mars?
A. It explores its volcanic history.
B. It proves it once had liquid water.
C. It suggests it could have supported life.
D It shows how its minerals formed recently.
13. What does the discovery of magnesium sulfate explain?
A. Why carbonates escaped detection.
B. Where potential life might emerge.
C. How water disappeared from Mars.
D. When the Red Planet became warm.
14. Why was Mars unable to maintain its carbon cycle?
A. It trapped too much water. B. Its temperature was unstable.
C. Its atmosphere was too thick. D. It lacked earth-like plate tectonics.
15. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Red Planet’s Change into Desert
B. The On-going Climate Change of Mars
C. Curiosity’s New Technical Breakthrough
D. From Hidden Carbon Cycle to Mars’ Past
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. D

Yours,
Jenny
【答案】
Dear Li Hua,
I really understand your struggle between pursuing dreams and fulfilling parental expectations.
First, have an honest conversation with your parents, detailing why photography ignites your passion and presenting a concrete career plan — maybe share how photographers blend art with commercial projects or document meaningful stories. You could also introduce renowned photographers who’ve built stable careers to ease their concerns. If they remain hesitant, consider a compromise: major in medicine as a backup while joining photography clubs or online courses. This way, you honor their worries while nurturing your talent. Balance doesn’t mean sacrifice — it’s a bridge to both worlds.
Yours,
Jenny

The morning bell rang through Mrs. White’s classroom. She was looking at the name list. “Huang... Yi... Ming?” she said slowly. “Please call me Mike,” the new student quickly replied. The class laughed warmly. Mrs. White then announced, “Our school fair is this Friday! You’ll each set up a booth (小摊) with your parents. You can sell anything, such as homemade crafts, paintings, or snacks.”
At lunchtime, Mike saw everyone eating from flat plastic boxes. “These are Lunchables!” Brock waved. “Come and sit with us!” Mike happily joined the friendly boys’ table. But when he opened his lunchbox, a strong smell of garlic filled the air. Brock covered his nose. “Eww! What’s that smell?” Mike had no choice. He had to find another place and finish his lunch alone.
The next morning, Mike asked his mother before school, “Mom, can I… maybe get Lunchables today? Like the others? His voice sounded small against the steam in the kitchen. “Good food needs no shame,” mother said. She packed her special dumplings instead. “You said these were the best, remember?”
That night, Mike wolfed down three bowls of rice. “Mike, how was my Xiaolongbao today?” mother asked. “So good!” Mike answered quickly. He didn’t notice his mother’s angry face. “Liar! I only packed dumplings!” Mike sighed, admitting he’d thrown his lunch away. “I just want to fit in and make friends,” he whispered. Mother patted his back. “Fine, I will buy you one.”
The day before the fair, Mike proudly showed his Lunchables. “Check it out! Same as yours! The boys nodded with approval. They then allowed him to join the table again. Eating the dry cookies and cheese, Mike thought he would feel happy. But strangely, he found himself missing mother’s special dumplings. As his friends talked about selling toy cars at the fair, Mike secretly thought up a plan.

【答案】
That evening, flour (面粉) snowed in the Huangs’ kitchen. Mike and his mother worked side by side, laughter mixing with the sound of rolling pins. “More garlic?” mother asked, winking. Mike nodded, grinning. They filled dumplings with juicy pork and fragrant chives, then steamed batches of plump xiaolongbao, their aroma curling to the ceiling. “These will be a hit,” mother said, wiping flour from his cheek. Mike thought of his friends’ faces, hoping they’d give the food a chance. By midnight, trays of dumplings and xiaolongbao lined the counter, ready for the fair.
Steam rose from Mike’s booth, drawing curious noses. “What’s that smell?” Brock leaned in, eyes widening. “My mom’s special dumplings. Want a taste?” Mike offered a warm one. Brock bit in, juice dribbling down his chin. “Whoa! This beats Lunchables!” he exclaimed. Soon, the booth was swarmed. Kids and parents lined up, savoring the savory treats. “You should’ve told us sooner,” one friend said, mouth full. Mike smiled, handing out napkins. He didn’t need to pretend anymore — his culture, wrapped in dough, had brought everyone together.

第一部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Imagine cities where buildings breathe like plants, streets flow like rivers, and neighborhoods develop naturally like forests.

D. It shows how its minerals formed recently.
13. What does the discovery of magnesium sulfate explain?
A. Why carbonates escaped detection.
B. Where potential life might emerge.
C. How water disappeared from Mars.
D. When the Red Planet became warm.
14. Why was Mars unable to maintain its carbon cycle?
A. It trapped too much water. B. Its temperature was unstable.
C. Its atmosphere was too thick. D. It lacked earth-like plate tectonics.
15. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Red Planet’s Change into Desert
B. The On-going Climate Change of Mars
C. Curiosity’s New Technical Breakthrough
D. From Hidden Carbon Cycle to Mars’ Past

Dealing with Appearance Anxiety
Appearance anxiety means worrying too much about how you look, which is especially common among teenagers. ____16____ For example, spending hours checking carefully edited selfies on social media or comparing your appearance with others often leads to negative thoughts. Such constant worries not only damage self-confidence but may also lead to avoiding social situations like school events or group activities.

At lunchtime Mike saw everyone eating from flat plastic boxes.
