B Although nowadays her images are often used on coffee cups and T-shirts, and the movies based on her life or her novels are often box-office hits, Jane Austen, one of the most important English novelists of the 19th century, spent her short, quiet life away from public attention. For most of her life she lived in a rural area of southern England where she was born. Her formal education was limited to a short time at boarding school. Austen started writing at the age of twelve, for her family’s amusement and her own. In 1803 one publisher paid £10 for the copyright of the novel we now know as Northanger Abbey, but then refused to publish it, so Austen had to go to great lengths to buy it back. Later, she published Sense and Sensibility in 1811 at her own expense, which was a big success. Her other significant works came out over the following years. Northanger Abbey was finally published in 1818, one year after her death at age 41. Her novels are all, in Austen’s own words, “pictures of life in country villages,” but the details reflect the influence of the great social changes. Through their heroines (女主人公), readers can see how difficult women’s life were during a period when a lady’s security depended on her making a good marriage. But would the marriage hurt the independence of mind? This was the key issue that Austen and her heroines cared most about. Instead of using a male pseudonym (笔名), which was a common practice for women writers at her time, Austen just signed “a lady” as the author of her books. It seemed modest (谦逊的), but her writing voice was so confident and sharp, laughing at what was widely accepted as traditions. For Austen, to live was to be herself, and her quietness was indeed a loud voice against the established conventions. 24. Why is Austen’s popularity mentioned in the first paragraph? A. To highlight her importance in fashion. B. To make a comparison with her real life. C. To explain the reasons behind her success. D. To give an introduction to her achievements. 25. What do we know about the book Northanger Abbey? A. It was Austen’s first published book. B. Its publication was a difficult process. C. It made Austen popular with readers. D. Its copyright was sold to another writer. 26. What did Austen consider most important for women? A. Social equality. B. Freedom of thought. C. A safe marriage. D. Peaceful country life. 27. Why did Austen use “a lady” as the author of her books? A. To challenge traditions. B. To follow the trends. C To show her modesty. D. To hide her identity. C Baking has become a common cure for stress or feeling down, and science may explain why. A new study, published in the Journal of Positive Psychology, followed 658 people for about four weeks. By checking the detailed diaries kept by these people, Tamlin Conner, a psychologist and lead author of the study, found that people who worked on little creative projects like baking every day felt they were “flourishing” — a psychological term that describes the feeling of personal growth. It means that the good feeling that comes with pulling the freshly baked bread out of the oven (烤箱) could carry over into the next day, making the baker feel happier and more satisfied with their daily life. “There is growing awareness in psychology research that creativity is related with emotional functioning,” Conner said. “Psychologists have even started exploring baking as a tool to treat people with some forms of mental illness.” But how exactly does baking help? John Whaite, who was suffering from manic depression (躁郁症), shared his experience: “When I’m in the kitchen, measuring the amount of sugar, flour or butter I need or breaking the exact number of eggs, I am in control. That’s really important because a key element of my condition is a feeling of no control.” For people like Whaite, baking can help their mood by providing small tasks to focus on in a manner similar to meditation (冥想). In order to put together a good meal, they have to stay in the moment the whole time, preparing the materials, adjusting the heat of the oven and tasting the food-all of which can be helpful techniques in treating depression and anxiety. Baking may not be a be-all-end-all cure for mental illness, but anyone in need of lifted spirits should consider giving it a try. 28. What did people do in the study? A. Recorded their daily life. B. Completed an interview. C. Designed creative projects. D. Passed a physical exam. 29. What does the underlined word “flourishing” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Showing curiosity. B. Making progress. C. Achieving wealth. D. Gaining support. 30. People can benefit from baking by _______. A. learning to control their desires B. expressing their negative emotions C. developing the baking method D. paying full attention to the present 31. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. How Can You Cure Depression B. Are You Hungry? Baking May Help C. What May Baking Teach You D. Feeling Down? You Can Try Baking D What’s the purpose of your study? It’s the question many basic-science researchers fear. And it’s the question that Carly Anne York received 10 years ago from a volunteer. At that time, York was a Ph.D. student studying squid (鱿鱼). When asked why money should be spent on what the volunteer called “silly science,” York could only respond by stressing the essential value of knowledge. Today, York, an animal physiologist, still doesn’t know how her doctoral research can directly benefit humankind. But after a decade of studying how animals interact with their environments, York has come to realize that the focus on immediate applications is not the goal of basic science. Rather, it seeks to deeply understand natural events. That doesn’t mean the research is worthless. As York details in her new book, The Salmon Cannon and the Levitating Frog, projects that could be considered silly or useless can lead to scientific advances that better our lives. Take the study of sea fireflies. The tiny creature’s glow (发光) had puzzled scientists for decades. Researchers knew that something produced the shine, but many avoided studying it because it was considered challenging and probably useless to humans. That was until Japanese chemist Osamu Shimomura found it in 1956. Based on this work, Shimomura and his team did further research on jellyfish, and identified two of the proteins (蛋白质) responsible for its glow, which transformed biological research and medicine. For instance, doctors now use the proteins to better see and avoid nerves (神经) during surgery, as well as to track the spread of cancer cells in the body. The discovery earned Shimomura the 2008 Nobel Prize in chemistry. Skillfully using her wisdom, York reminds us in her book that it’s nearly impossible for a science project to follow a direct path that results in an immediately applicable outcome. This book is a timely reminder especially when the U.S. government cuts science funding today. “I am also appreciative of the scientists who built the path to advance basic research,” York writes. “I hope that after reading this book you will be as well?” 32. What can we infer from the question in the first paragraph? A. The value of York’s work was doubted. B. Much money was wasted on York’s study. C. Researchers feared the failure of their work. D Most research work lacked specific purposes 33. What is the goal of basic science according to York? A. To have immediate applications. B. To create life-changing inventions. C. To understand the natural world. D. To build human-nature relationship. 34. Which of the following best describes the study of sea fireflies? A. Costly and worthless. B. Important but fruitless. C. Practical but outdated. D. Inspiring and rewarding 35. What would York probably suggest about basic-science research? A. Promoting the outcome. B. Shortening the process. C. Supporting the funding. D. Improving the application. Film has seen great progress over the years. C. To show her modesty. D. To hide her identity. B 25. B 26. B 27. 根据第一段“Although nowadays her images are often used on coffee cups and T-shirts, and the movies based on her life or her novels are often box-office hits, Jane Austen, one of the most important English novelists of the 19th century, spent her short, quiet life away from public attention. (尽管如今简・奥斯汀的形象常出现在咖啡杯和T恤上,以她的生平或小说改编的电影也屡屡成为票房爆款,但作为19世纪英国最重要的小说家之一,她却在短暂而宁静的一生中远离公众的关注)”可知,作者提到奥斯汀如今的受欢迎程度是为了与她真实的低调生活形成对比。故选B项。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“In 1803 one publisher paid £10 for the copyright of the novel we now know as Northanger Abbey, but then refused to publish it, so Austen had to go to great lengths to buy it back. Later, she published Sense and Sensibility in 1811 at her own expense, which was a big success. Her other significant works came out over the following years. Northanger Abbey was finally published in 1818, one year after her death at age 41. 根据第三段“But would the marriage hurt the independence of mind? This was the key issue that Austen and her heroines cared most about. (但婚姻会损害思想的独立性吗?这是奥斯汀和她的女主人公最关心的关键问题)”可知,奥斯汀认为女性最重要的是思想的自由。故选B项。 【27题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Instead of using a male pseudonym (笔名), which was a common practice for women writers at her time, Austen just signed “a lady” as the author of her books. It seemed modest (谦逊的), but her writing voice was so confident and sharp, laughing at what was widely accepted as traditions. (奥斯汀没有使用男性笔名,这在她那个时代的女性作家中很常见,她只是在自己的书中署名“一位女士”。这看似谦逊,但她的写作声音却非常自信和尖锐,嘲笑了被广泛接受的传统)”可知,奥斯汀用“一位女士”署名是为了挑战传统。故选A项。 C Baking has become a common cure for stress or feeling down, and science may explain why. A Recorded their daily life. B. Completed an interview. C. Designed creative projects. D. Passed a physical exam. 29. What does the underlined word “flourishing” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Showing curiosity. B. Making progress. C. Achieving wealth. D. Gaining support. 30. People can benefit from baking by _______. A. learning to control their desires B. expressing their negative emotions C. developing the baking method D. paying full attention to the present 31. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. How Can You Cure Depression B. Are You Hungry? Baking May Help C. What May Baking Teach You D. Feeling Down? You Can Try Baking 【答案】28. A 29. B 30. D 31. 根据文章第二段“A new study, published in the Journal of Positive Psychology, followed 658 people for about four weeks. By checking the detailed diaries kept by these people, Tamlin Conner, a psychologist and lead author of the study, found that people who worked on little creative projects like baking every day felt they were “flourishing”-a psychological term that describes the feeling of personal growth.(一项发表在《积极心理学杂志》上的新研究对 658 人进行了约四周的跟踪调查。通过查阅这些人的详细日记,心理学家、该研究的主要作者Tamlin Conner发现,那些每天从事诸如烘焙之类具有创造性的活动的人,会觉得自己“充满活力”——一个用以描述个人成长感受的心理学术语。)”可知人们在研究中记录他们的日常生活,故选A项。 【29题详解】 词句猜测题。根据文章第二段划线词之前“By checking the detailed diaries kept by these people, Tamlin Conner, a psychologist and lead author of the study, found that people who worked on little creative projects like baking every day felt they were (通过查阅这些人的详细日记,心理学家、该研究的主要作者Tamlin Conner发现,那些每天从事诸如烘焙之类具有创造性的活动的人,会觉得自己”以及划线词之后“a psychological term that describes the feeling of personal growth.(一个用以描述个人成长感觉的心理学术语。)” 根据文章第五段“For people like Whaite, baking can help their mood by providing small tasks to focus on in a manner similar to meditation (冥想). In order to put together a good meal, they have to stay in the moment the whole time, preparing the materials, adjusting the heat of the oven and tasting the food-all of which can be helpful techniques in treating depression and anxiety. (对于像Whaite这样的人来说,烘焙能够帮助他们改善心情,因为这种活动能让他们专注于一些小任务,其方式类似于冥想。为了准备一顿美味的饭菜,他们必须全神贯注于当下,准备食材、调节烤箱的温度以及品尝食物——所有这些都能成为治疗抑郁和焦虑的有效方法。)”可知,人们通过全神贯注于当下就能从烘焙活动中获益,故选D项。 31题详解】 主旨大意题。文章第一段“Baking has become a common cure for stress or feeling down, and science may explain why.(烘焙已成为缓解压力或情绪低落的常用方法,科学或许可以解释其中的原因。)” Feeling Down? You Can Try Baking(情绪低落? D What’s the purpose of your study? D. Most research work lacked specific purposes 33. What is the goal of basic science according to York? A. To have immediate applications. B. To create life-changing inventions. C. To understand the natural world. D. To build human-nature relationship. 34. Which of the following best describes the study of sea fireflies? A. Costly and worthless. B. Important but fruitless. C. Practical but outdated. D. Inspiring and rewarding 35. What would York probably suggest about basic-science research? A. Promoting the outcome. B. Shortening the process. C. Supporting the funding. D. Improving the application. A 33. C 34. D 35. 根据第一段中“When asked why money should be spent on what the volunteer called “silly science,” York could only respond by stressing the essential value of knowledge. (当被问及为什么要把钱花在这位志愿者所说的“愚蠢的科学”上时,York只能强调知识的根本价值作为回应。)”可知,志愿者认为York研究的是“愚蠢的科学”,质疑为什么要在这上面花钱,由此可推断出York工作的价值受到了质疑。故选A项。 根据第二段中“But after a decade of studying how animals interact with their environments, York has come to realize that the focus on immediate applications is not the goal of basic science. Rather, it seeks to deeply understand natural events. (但在花了十年时间研究动物如何与环境互动之后,York开始意识到,关注即时应用并非基础科学的目标。相反,基础科学旨在深入理解自然现象。)”可知,York认为基础科学的目的是深入了解自然事件,即了解自然世界。故选C项。 【34题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“Take the study of sea fireflies. The tiny creature’s glow (发光) had puzzled scientists for decades. Researchers knew that something produced the shine, but many avoided studying it because it was considered challenging and probably useless to humans. That was until Japanese chemist Osamu Shimomura found it in 1956. For instance, doctors now use the proteins to better see and avoid nerves (神经) during surgery, as well as to track the spread of cancer cells in the body. The discovery earned Shimomura the 2008 Nobel Prize in chemistry. 根据最后一段中“This book is a timely reminder especially when the U.S. government cuts science funding today. “I am also appreciative of the scientists who built the path to advance basic research,” York writes. “I hope that after reading this book you will be as well?” (这本书是一个及时的提醒,尤其是在如今美国政府削减科学资金的情况下。“我也感激那些为推动基础研究开辟道路的科学家们,” 约克写道。“我希望读完这本书后,你也会如此?”)”可推知,York可能会建议支持基础科学研究的资金投入。故选C项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Film has seen great progress over the years. While actors and directors often receive most of the praise, the heroes behind the screen are the musicians who make a film unforgettable. ____36____ This is the kind of music we call a film score (配乐). It has developed through several stages. In the silent film era, music was used to fill the silence. ____37____ They had to respond in real time to the changing scenes, adjusting their music to match the mood. This was the early form of film scoring. The shift from live performance to written scores began in the early 1900s. French composer (作家) Camille Saint-Saens was the first to write original music specially for film. This marked a new stage of film scoring. ____38____ They worked closely with directors. As sound technology advanced, film scoring became an important part of the film-making process. ____39____ By the mid-20th century, they grew to include rock, pop, hip-hop, and electronic music. Films like Saturday Night Fever used popular music to define both character and culture. In science fiction films, electronic sounds were used to create a sense of the unknown. Today, film musicians continue to shape the way we experience films. Masters like Hans Zimmer have moved us deeply with the beautiful score in Interstellar. Combining traditional instruments with digital production in innovative ways, he has brought us new sounds. ____40____ A. The film industry gained big success. B. Firstly, this plan saves time for students who have busy schedules, allowing them to record when they are free. Besides, since singers can practice many times, it also helps shy singers in case they feel nervous on stage. Videos can be watched by all students later, which makes the event more inclusive. However, we should ensure everyone has access to a phone or camera. So, devices should be given to students needing help. This way, the contest remains fair and fun for all. (94 words) Possible version 2 My View on the Change of the Singing Competition I disagree with replacing the live performance with online videos. Firstly, the instant reactions from the audience—applause, cheers, or even silence—help singers to build real emotional connection with them. Moreover, singing before a live audience encourages students to face challenges bravely, thus enabling them to boost confidence needed for future life. Recording videos alone makes judging unfair. Teachers might focus only on perfect recordings, ignoring true singing skills. Also, students lacking good phones could be disadvantaged. Therefore, we could keep the live event while adding safety rules. This ensures the lively atmosphere that everyone can enjoy together.
