一、Greetings
T: Good morning, dear students! How was your day? Did you have any interesting experiences related to radio after the last two classes?
S: (Share some simple experiences if any)
T: That sounds great! I’m excited to see what you’ve learned and how well you can use the language today. Are you ready to explore “Language in use” in this module?
S: Yes, teacher!
二、Revision of Key Points (5 minutes)
T: First, let’s quickly review what we’ve learned in Unit 1 and Unit 2. Who can tell me some important words about radio? S1, please.
S1: Microphone, studio, director, presenter.
T: Excellent! Those are very key words. And what about some useful expressions? S2?
S2: Show sb. around, on air, avoid doing sth.
T: Perfect! Now, let’s recall the grammar points. What kind of clause did we study? Yes, S3?
S3: Object clauses.
T: Right! Can you give an example of an object clause?
S3: I hope that I can visit a radio station one day.
T: Great example! Also, we learned the structure “it seemed that…”. For instance, “It seemed that he enjoyed listening to the radio very much.” Now, let’s have a short quiz to check your memory. I’ll show some incomplete sentences on the screen, and you fill in the blanks with the correct words or phrases. (Show the sentences on the PPT, such as “The ______ is responsible for guiding the radio program production.” “When the red light is on, the program is ______.”)
T: Time’s up. Let’s check the answers together. For the first one, the answer is “director”. And the second one? “On air”. Well done, most of you did a good job!
三、Vocabulary Expansion and Practice (5 minutes)
T: Now, we’re going to expand our vocabulary related to radio. Look at these new words. (Show words like “broadcast”, “transmitter”, “receiver” on the PPT with pictures) This word “broadcast”. It can be a noun or a verb. As a noun, it means a program that is sent out on radio or TV, like “a news broadcast”. As a verb, it means to send out a program, for example, “They broadcast the football match live.” Read after me, broadcast.
S: Broadcast.
T: Good. Next, “transmitter”. A transmitter is a piece of equipment that sends out radio or television signals. Read, transmitter.
S: Transmitter.
T: And “receiver”. A receiver is used to pick up the signals sent by the transmitter, so we can listen to the radio or watch TV. Read, receiver.
S: Receiver.
T: Now, let’s play a word - building game. I’ll give you a root word, and you try to create as many related words as possible within two minutes. For example, if I say “radio”, you can say “radio station”, “radio presenter”, “radio broadcast”. The word is “broadcast”. Start! (Students work individually or in pairs)
T: Time’s up. S4, share your words.
S4: Broadcast news, live broadcast, broadcast program.
T: Good! Who else has more? S5?
S5: Broadcast technology, broadcast team.
T: Excellent! Now, I want you to use these new words to make sentences. Write three sentences using “broadcast”, “transmitter” and “receiver” respectively. Then, share your sentences with the class. (Students write and share)
T: S6, read your first sentence.
S6: The radio station will broadcast a special program about animals tonight.
T: Great! And the second one?
S6: The transmitter on the mountain sends out strong signals.
T: Wonderful! The last one?
S6: My old radio receiver doesn’t work well anymore.
T: Well done!
四、Grammar Consolidation (10 minutes)
T: Let’s focus on the grammar we’ve learned, especially object clauses. First, let’s review the rules. Object clauses follow the order of “question word + subject + verb” when it’s a question - word - led object clause. For example, “I don’t know where he works.” And when it’s a that - clause, “that” can sometimes be omitted, like “I think (that) he is a good presenter.” Now, I have some sentences on the screen. Some of them have mistakes in object clauses. Can you find and correct them? (Show sentences like “He asked me where was I going.” “I hope you will come tomorrow that.”)
T: S7, tell me your correction for the first sentence.
S7: It should be “He asked me where I was going.”
T: Exactly! The word order in the object clause should be normal. And the second one, S8?
S8: We can remove “that” at the end. It should be “I hope you will come tomorrow.”
T: Right! Now, let’s practice making object clauses. I’ll give you some situations, and you create sentences with object clauses. For example, if I say “You want to know Mary’s plan for the weekend”, you can say “I want to know what Mary’s plan for the weekend is.” Here’s the first situation: “Your friend is curious about your favorite radio program.” S9, make a sentence.
S9: My friend wants to know what my favorite radio program is.
T: Good! Next situation: “The teacher tells the students something important.” S10?
S10: The teacher tells the students that they should listen to English radio programs more often.
T: Excellent!
五、Listening and Speaking Practice (5 minutes)
T: Now, it’s time for listening and speaking. I’ll play a short radio - themed dialogue. While listening, you need to fill in the blanks in your worksheets. The blanks are about some key information in the dialogue, such as names of programs, people’s opinions about radio, etc. (Play the recording)
T: Time’s up. Let’s check the answers. The first blank, what should we fill in? S11?
S11: Music World.
T: Correct. It’s the name of a radio program in the dialogue. Let’s continue checking. (Check all the answers)
T: Now, based on the dialogue you just heard, I want you to work in pairs and create a similar dialogue. You can talk about your favorite radio programs, why you like them, or some interesting things that happened when you listened to the radio. Use the vocabulary and grammar we’ve learned today. (Students work in pairs and practice speaking)
T: Which pair wants to show your dialogue to the class? S12 and S13, come to the front.
S12: Hi, do you often listen to the radio?
S13: Yes, I love listening to “Story Time”. It seems that the stories are so real.
S12: Really? I prefer “English Learning Program”. I hope that I can improve my English through it.
S13: That’s a good idea. I think I should also try to listen to more English programs.
T: Great job, you two! Your dialogue is full of our target language.
六、Writing Practice (5 minutes)
T: For the last part of this class, we’re going to do some writing. I want you to write a short passage about “My Ideal Radio Program”. You can include the following aspects: what kind of program it is, who the target listeners are, what content it has, and why you think it will be popular. Remember to use at least 8 new words and 3 object clauses. You have 10 minutes to write. (Students write)
T: Time’s up. I’ll ask some students to read their passages. S14, start.
S14: My ideal radio program is called “Adventure Time”. It is mainly for teenagers who love exciting stories. I hope that it can include different kinds of adventure stories from all over the world. It seems that teenagers will be attracted by these amazing stories. Also, I think that we can invite some famous writers to share their writing experiences on the program.
T: Very good! Your passage is well - written and uses our language points properly.
七、Summary (5 minutes)
T: Class, let’s summarize what we’ve learned today. We revised the key vocabulary and grammar from the previous units and expanded our vocabulary about radio. We practiced object clauses through various exercises, and also improved our listening, speaking and writing skills. Remember to review these knowledge points regularly and try to use them in your daily English learning. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.
八、Homework (5 minutes)
T: For homework, first, review all the words and grammar points we’ve learned in this module. Make a mind map to organize them. Second, find a real radio program (it can be an English - language program online), listen to it carefully, and write a short review about it. You should mention what you like or dislike about the program, and use at least 5 new words and 2 object clauses in your review. Hand it in next class.
T: That’s all for today. Have a great day!
S: Goodbye, teacher!
