Growing up in Kenya, Lesein Mutunkei, together with his family, always celebrated significant occasions by planting trees, which motivated him to protect the environment. It’s what the now 18-year-old soccer player treasures, especially since Kenya has an ongoing problem with deforestation.
Mutunkei follows in the footsteps of the late Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai who founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977. This initiative has resulted in the planting of over 51 million trees to date.
In 2018, Lesein decided to start a movement of his own. He started by planting one tree for every goal he scored during a football match. He called it Trees4Goals, and it has grown so much that he now plants 11 trees, one for each member of his team, every time he scores. Through this, he wants to inspire young people, specifically his fellow athletes, to follow in his footsteps, take nature conservation seriously, and promise to plant trees every time they score. As a result, some of them have adapted this practice for their sports. “Seeing that they’re taking that responsibility because of the project I started, for me, that is the biggest achievement,” he said.
The initiative has caught the attention of English football club Arsenal and Kenya’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry, which he now works with regularly and gets advice from.
Like Green Belt Movement, Trees4Goals, which has planted 5,500 trees so far, has made it. While Lesein has received some recognition for his initiative, he sets his sights on making it a worldwide phenomenon. “Football is a universal game, and climate change is a universal problem,” he explains. “It has the power to unite, educate and inspire my generation to create a safer and greener future.” This is why he wants to work with the world’s biggest football federation FIFA.
As for what others can do to fight deforestation or other environmental concerns, the teenager says it’s important to just get involved in some way, no matter how small.
4. What made Lesein get interested in environmental protection?
A. The influence of his family.
B. Wangari Maathai’s huge assistances.
C. The demand of the football team.
D. His fellow athletes’ encouragement.
5. Why did Lesein found Trees4Goals?
A. To gain Kenya’s support.
B. To set an example for others.
C. To catch Arsenal’s attention.
D To show his achievements.
6. What is Lesein’s hope for the future of Trees4Goals?
A. Promoting football’s development.
B. Going global with the help of FIFA.
C. Beating climate change completely.
D. Getting beyond Green Belt Movement.
7. What can we learn from Lesein’s story?
A. Fame is a great thirst of the young.
B. A youth is to be regarded with respect.
C. Positive thinking and action result in success.
D. Success means getting personal desires satisfied.
C
For most people, a minor wound will be relatively harmless. After some time the wound will heal and disappear without leaving any visible evidence on the skin. But it is not so simple for everybody. Diabetics (糖尿病人) and elderly people with reduced blood circulation may have far greater issues when it comes to wound healing. However, scientists have introduced a new weapon against such extreme wound reactions.
Swedish scientists from Chalmers University of Technology have developed a technology which can stimulate wound healing so that it can happen more rapidly. The technique involves electrifying the skin. “Long-standing wounds make up a severe problem that we do not hear very much about,” says Associate Professor Maria Asplund from Chalmers University of Technology, who headed the project. “We have now found a method that can make wounds heal up to three times faster, which could be a game changer for elderly people and diabetics, who often have wounds that cannot heal.”
To test this, the Chalmers researchers made a kind of biochip (生物芯片) on which they grew skin cells. They then made small wounds in the artificial skin and tested how fast the wound healing happened when they either passed electricity through the chip or did not. The results showed the healing process happening three times faster in the presence of electricity.
The scientists will now receive funds to continue their research beyond the lab. “At the moment we are investigating how different skin cells react to electrical stimulation to find out what would correspond to (匹配) realistic wounds,” says Asplund. “We aim to develop a concept that allows us to examine wounds and personalize the electrical stimulation to individual wound types. We are convinced that this is the way to help people with slow-healing wounds.”
8 Who will most benefit from the new technology?
A. People with high blood sugar. B. People who have heart attack.
C. People who get wounded easily. D. People with high blood pressure.
9. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about the test?
A. Methods to produce artificial skin and cure the patients.
B. Required experimental conditions to carry out the research.
C. Efforts to find out whether electricity can speed up wound healing.
D. Benefits of adopting advanced technology in the biochip experiment.
10. What does Asplund think of wound healing with electricity?
A. Debatable. B. Limited. C. Typical. D. Hopeful.
11. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Electricity Cures Slow-healing Wounds
B. New Weapon Helps Patients with Diabetics
C. Diabetics and the Elderly Suffer Wound Healing
D. New Technology Helps Speed up Healing Wounds

To be clear: Food noise has nothing to do with hunger or food shortage, says Lawrence Cheskin, a professor of nutrition and food studies at George Mason University. It’s about being absorbed in thoughts about food.
In an issue of the journal Nutrients, researchers defined food noise as something that can be caused by internal signs such as your stomach growling with hunger or external signs such as seeing or smelling delicious foods. These signs can cause food-related thoughts to start playing on a repetitive cycle.
“Imagine you have a picture chart — think about what percentage of the day is spent thinking about food,” says Susan Albers, a clinical psychologist. “For those with a lot of food noise, 80 to 90 percent of their day is spent thinking about food.” “For those with intrusive food noise, it might affect their sleep, or lead to shame around eating or anxious thoughts,” says Goldman. “It can get in the way of someone being able to function at their best.” By contrast, those with mild food noise may hardly notice it.
Anyone can experience food noise but people with obesity or overweight often struggle with food noise more than other people do, which can make it difficult to lose weight. Other people include those with an eating disorder or disordered eating pattern. Also, if you have a lot of food rules or you’ve been dieting off and on for years, you may be more likely to experience food noise. “There’s a lot of shame and judgment around food noise,” Albers says. “It can impact relationships, leading to social withdrawal, and reduce people’s engagement in other areas of their life.”
Keep in mind, however, that food noise is a common suffering. “Don’t beat yourself up for it. Instead, exercise some self-sympathy,” Goldman suggests. “The way we talk to ourselves matters, so be mindful about what you’re saying to yourself about food noise.”
12. What do we know about the food noise?
A. It’s the noise people make while eating.
B. It’s only for people with weight issues.
C. It refers to repeated food thoughts due to signs.
D. It’s related to food shortage and causes hunger.
13. What does the underlined word “intrusive” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. annoying B. inviting C. available D. unnoticeable
14. How does food noise affect people’s life?
A. It leads to severe weight gain.
B. It brings about regular eating habits.
C. It results in a lack of social activities.
D. It causes sleep disorders and overeating.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Being kind to yourself is helpful.
B. Food noise is not a serious problem.
C. Talking to others about food noise matters.
D. People should blame themselves for food noise.

I have a toy, a small stuffed (毛绒的) cat, which has remained one of my most treasured possessions. I call it VIP — Very Important Pet. It sits on my desk as a reminder of a moment with my brother.
Luca, my older brother, had autism (自闭症). Most of the time, he stayed quiet. He never openly expressed his feelings or communicated the way other people did. We were family, but there was always a quiet distance between us — one that I didn’t fully understand at the time.
Luca and I attended the same school, but our paths rarely crossed. He was two grades ahead of me, and though we lived together, our school lives were entirely separate. I had rarely visited his classroom or expected him to find me. But one thing I did know was that his class had a reward system where students earned tickets for good behavior and could trade them for prizes every Friday. Yet Luca never brought home any prizes. I often wondered why-maybe he wasn’t interested, maybe he didn’t earn enough tickets, or maybe he just didn’t like waiting for his turn.
Then one day I remember clearly it was Friday, something unexpected happened. While I was in class, I reached into my school bag for my folder (资料夹) and suddenly realized I had taken Luca’s by mistake! Remembering I was supposed to have my own folder, I quickly told my teacher what happened and asked if I could go to his classroom to exchange the folders. She said yes.
As I made my way toward his classroom, a strange mix of excitement and nervousness settled over me. I had never been there before, and for reasons I couldn’t quite explain, it felt like stepping into an unfamiliar world. When I arrived, I heard a soft buzz (嗡嗡声) of noise inside. I explained the situation to his teacher, who smiled knowingly and called Luca over. We exchanged folders, and I turned to leave, expecting nothing more than a simple trade.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
But then Luca signaled for me to wait outside.

Dear Chris,
How is everything going? I’m writing to share with you a trip to the City Art Gallery, which was organized by our class last Saturday. We started early in the morning and spent the entire day exploring various exhibits under the guidance of the professional workers in the City Art Gallery. We enjoyed many impressive paintings and sculptures, and even attended an interesting lecture.
I found the modern art section particularly inspiring. It challenged my perception of beauty and creativity. Moreover, I learned a lot about local artists and their contributions to the cultural heritage. It was a fulfilling day, and I’m grateful for such an enriching experience.

Minutes passed and my heart started to race faster with both curiosity and uncertainty. What was he doing? Had I misunderstood? Just as I was about to peek inside, Luca finally came back out. His hands were hidden behind his back, and his face was slightly flushed with excitement. “I got this for you.” he said almost shyly, before extending his hands and giving me a small stuffed cat.
I stared at the toy, trying to make sense of what had just happened. Then it hit me. It was Friday — the day his class exchanged tickets for prizes. Luca had been waiting for his turn, but when I showed up, he made a choice. Instead of picking something for himself, he used almost all of his hard-earned tickets, and spent them on me. My brother loved me; he just showed it differently. This stuffed cat, VIP, was proof of the quiet, unspoken love of a brother who, in his own way, had given me one of the most precious gifts of all. Frankly, it feels so sweet to know that I am always his VIP — Very Important Person.
