Grasslands are large areas with soft grass and colorful flowers. They are sometimes called “green oceans” because they stretch(延伸) far and wide under the sky. These places are essential for animals, plants, and even people! The grasslands provide(提供) feeding grounds for all of them and give balance to the world.
There is not too much or too little rain on grasslands. The plants here have very long roots. These roots help them live well with a little water. Many animals find food and homes here. Local farmers also use the land to grow crops and feed animals like cows and sheep.
One special thing about grasslands is about the sky. On sunny days, the sky is blue with soft white clouds. But when bad weather comes, dark clouds get together quickly. Then the lightning(闪电) may cause small fires. These fires burn(燃烧) old plants, making enough space for new ones to grow. This is a natural way of keeping the grasslands healthy.
Sadly, some bad human actions like farming too much are harmful to grasslands. If we lose these places, many animals and plants might disappear. To protect them, we should farm in right ways.
( )56. What does the underlined word “essential” mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Very important.
B. Very dangerous.

( )57. Why are grasslands called “green oceans”?
A. Because fish live there.
B. Because they are near real oceans.
C. Because they have salty water like oceans.
D. Because they stretch far and wide with soft grass.

A. They can make the land dry.
B. They can attract more rain.
C. They can help plants live well with a little water.
D. They can help grow many kinds of vegetables for farmers.
( )59. What happens when lightning starts small fires in grasslands?
A. The sky becomes darker.
B. Farmers lose their crops.
C. New plants get space to grow.
D. All animals run away forever.
