Just hours ago, Fiona was in great sadness.
It was International Day of Friendship. In class that day, everyone had to make three presents to give to their three best friends. Fiona enjoyed the task of choosing three from among all her classmates. But when all the presents were shared out, she was the only one that didn’t receive a present! Fiona didn’t think of this and felt terrible, crying for hours. Everyone came to comfort her, but each stayed for only a short time before leaving—just as she did to others so many times.
Fiona didn’t know why this happened because she was always a very popular girl at school. From an early age, she tried hard to be kind and friendly to everyone. She invited the whole class to her birthday party and gave presents to everybody from time to time.
That night, Fiona told her mother about everything. Her mother said, “My dear, you cannot buy friends with a smile or a few good words. If you want true friends, you must give them time and real care. For a true friend, you must always be there in good and bad times.”
Hearing this, Fiona realized she was a good companion (伙伴), but she wasn’t a true friend to anyone. Although she tried to be close to everyone, she found that wasn’t enough to create true friendships.
Fiona decided to change her ways to finally have some true friends. As she lay in bed that night, she thought about her mother, who was always ready to help her, put up with her bad points, encouraged her and loved her deeply. That was what made a true friend!
Fiona smiled happily, realizing she already had the best friend anyone could ever want.
29. Why didn’t Fiona receive a present on the International Day of Friendship?
A. Because she was not popular at school. B. Because her classmates forgot about her.
C. Because she wasn’t a true friend to others. D. Because she didn’t give presents to others.
30. Which is the right order of what happened to Fiona?
a. Fiona was sad because of not getting a gift.
b. Fiona realized what a true friend was like.
c. Fiona told her mother about the problem.
d. Fiona tried to be kind to everyone at school.
A. d-a-c-b B. c-a-b-d C. b-d-c-a D. a-c-d-b
31. What was Fiona like at the very beginning of the story?
A. Shy and lonely. B. Popular but rude.
C. Polite and honest. D. Well-liked but uncaring.
32. To build true friendships, Fiona might ________.
A. organize more parties but only invite a few friends
B. care less about those who did not give her a present
C. spend more free time listening to her friends’ problems
D be kind to the schoolmates in other classes in her school

①Dr. Aaron T. Baker, a well-known psychologist (心理学家), told the stories of three people with anxiety (焦虑).
②The first one was Todd, a young graduate (毕业生). When looking for a job, Todd always thought he wasn’t good enough. Before every interview, he’d give up in his mind. Even after getting a job, he still couldn’t stop worrying because his coworkers were so excellent. As a result, he finally got a kind of psychological illness.
③The second person was 38-year-old Rebecca, a working mom. She was worried about many things. Was daughter safe at school? Would she or her husband be fired one day? What would happen to the family’s small amount of savings? These lingering worries filled her mind, making it hard for her to sleep and eat. She often cried suddenly and was about to break down.
④The third one was Elizabeth, nearly 50 years old. Although she lived a life of food and clothing, she lived in fear every day. She was afraid that she would be left behind by the society. She worried that as she got older, her health would get worse and she would bring trouble to others. She also felt that her money might not be enough and feared accidents.
⑤These three people had one thing in common. They were always worried about things that hadn’t happened yet, living under great pressure every day. In fact, for the trouble of tomorrow, there are only two possibilities. One is that they won’t happen at all, so today’s worries are meaningless. The other is that they will happen, but worrying won’t help.
⑥A psychologist once did an experiment (实验). He asked people to write down the worries they might have in the next week and put them in a “worry box”. By the third week, when he checked, 90% of the worries didn’t happen. After another three weeks, the left 10% were no longer a problem.
⑦In a word, don’t worry about things that are far away in time and space. When you start to worry about the future, tell yourself: “Most of the things I worry about will never happen.”
33. Why did Todd get a kind of psychological illness?
A. Because he couldn’t find a job.
B. Because he worried all the time.
C. Because his coworkers were unkind.
D. Because he was too young to work.
34. The underlined word “lingering” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.
A. changing B. missing C. touching D. continuing
35. How does the writer introduce the bad points of worrying?
A. By giving examples.
B. By listing numbers.
C. By giving reasons.
D. By comparing (比较) differences.
36. What can we infer from the experiment the psychologist did?
A. Worrying can help solve problems.
B. People should write down their worries.
C. There’s no need to worry about the future.
D. Each person may feel worried someday.
D
Wuyi Mountain is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As well as its tea, Wuyi Mountain is also known for its bamboo weaving (编织) tradition. With a history of over 2,000 years, bamboo weaving art was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
In the hands of poets, calligraphers (书法家) and painters, bamboo can also be made into beautiful works of art and daily objects, including baskets, umbrellas and bathtubs.

In 2022, Xie became popular online by building a life-like miniature (缩微模型) of the Tiangong space station out of bamboo. He said it took him 46 days to finish it. He used more than 1 dozen kinds of local bamboo to show the beauty of the space station. “Like knitting a sweater, I used very thin bamboo pieces, wove them tightly together with a tool to make different patterns,” said Xie.
Like other inheritors of intangible cultural heritage, Xie finds that it’s not easy to pass on the craft, but he’s trying his best. He set up a bamboo weaving museum in which visitors can watch and take photos of his works. At his workroom in the Wuyi Mountain scenic area, people can learn how to make earrings and bracelets (手镯), as well as buy some new handmade goods.
Xie has more than 27,000 followers crazy about bamboo weaving on Douyin and most of them were born after 1990 or 2000. Xie hopes that more young people will fall in love with the art and discover the beauty of traditional culture.

In May, Zheng played the erhu outdoors in Milan. Her classmate Ma Ruomeng played the pipa with her. About 100 people came to watch. Zheng remembers, “We played some old-style music. One song, Bella Ciao, is very popular in Italy. The audience (观众) were surprised when they heard it. They didn’t think a Chinese instrument (乐器) could play it so well.”
Zheng got the idea of playing the erhu on the street two years after she moved to Milan in 2021.
She saw some street shows online. “A violinist in Rome amazed me greatly,” she said. “It was so cool that audience around were dancing to the music! I decided to take my erhu to the street and give it a go.”
Besides traditional Chinese music, Zheng sometimes plays Western pop music on the erhu. Since her first street show, Zheng has got flowers and drawings of her playing the erhu from the audience. She says, “When I played, the audience made a big circle around and clapped for my show. It made me believe that music has no boundaries (边界).”
Ye Peng, one of Zheng’s classmates, advised that she record her street shows and put the videos online. Ye said, “Like a ‘dandelion (蒲公英) seed’ spreading through the internet, Zheng has brought erhu music to more and more places around the world,” says Ye. “This means a lot to us.”

①Dr. Aaron T. Baker, a well-known psychologist (心理学家), told the stories of three people with anxiety (焦虑).
②The first one was Todd a young graduate (毕业生).
【答案】33. B 34. D 35. A 36. C
