Lead - in
T: First, let’s play a little guessing game. I’ll describe some situations, and you try to guess what kind of unexpected event it is. Here’s the first one: You are walking on the street, happily thinking about the delicious ice - cream you’re going to buy. Suddenly, dark clouds gather in the sky, and big raindrops start falling. What happened?
S1: It rained suddenly!
T: Exactly! You’re so quick! Now, the second one: You’re waiting for the school bus early in the morning, but it’s already 10 minutes past the usual arrival time, and there’s no sign of the bus. What could have happened?
S2: The bus might be late!
T: Correct! Now, one more. You’re in the middle of an important exam, and you’re writing your answers carefully. Then, you realize you’ve run out of ink in your pen. What’s the unexpected situation here?
S3: The pen ran out of ink!
T: Well done, everyone! These are all unexpected events that can happen in our daily lives. Today, we’re going to learn more about different types of unexpected events and how to talk about them in English in Section B 1a - 1e of Unit 12.
1a Activity
T: Now, look at 1a on your textbooks. There are some pictures and words. First, let’s look at the pictures together. (Point to the pictures one by one) What can you see in the first picture?
S4: I can see a person slipping on a banana peel.
T: Good! And what about the second picture?
S5: There’s a car with a flat tire.
T: Exactly! Now, for the third picture?
S6: A man looks surprised, and there’s smoke coming out of the kitchen window. Maybe there’s a fire.
T: Great observation! Now, let’s match the words with the pictures. The words are “oversleep”, “miss the bus”, “wake up late”, “get a flat tire”, “fall downstairs”, “have a fire”. Try to do it on your own first, and then we’ll check the answers together. You have two minutes.
(Students work on matching the words with the pictures)
T: Time’s up! Let’s check. For the first picture of the person slipping on a banana peel, which word do you think matches?
S7: “fall downstairs” (If students make a mistake, guide them to think about the difference between slipping on a banana peel and falling downstairs, and correct gently) Actually, this one is more about falling because of the banana peel, but we can also say it’s an unexpected fall situation. Now, for the second picture of the car with a flat tire, which word?
S8: “get a flat tire”
T: Right! How about the third picture with the smoke from the kitchen?
S9: “have a fire”
T: Excellent! Now, let’s read the words aloud together. Repeat after me: “oversleep”, “miss the bus”, “wake up late”, “get a flat tire”, “fall downstairs”, “have a fire”.
(Students repeat the words after the teacher)
T: Now, I want you to think about this: Have you ever experienced any of these situations? Discuss with your partner for a minute and share your stories.
(Students discuss with their partners)
T: Okay, who would like to share your experience with the class?
S10: I once overslept and missed the school bus. I was so worried and had to run to school.
T: Oh, that must have been a stressful morning! Thank you for sharing. Anybody else?
S11: My bike got a flat tire on my way to school, and I was late.
T: That’s an unexpected thing, too. Thanks for telling us.
1b Activity
T: Now, let’s move on to 1b. You’re going to hear some statements. Listen carefully and number the pictures [1 - 6] in the order you hear them. Before we start listening, look at the pictures again and try to remember what each picture shows. I’ll play the recording once, and then you can check your answers. If you need, I’ll play it a second time.
(Play the recording)
T: Stop. Now, what’s your answer for the first statement? Which picture number is it?
S12: Picture 3.
T: Is that correct? Let’s check together. (Play the relevant part of the recording again if needed) Yes, it is! How about the second statement?
S13: Picture 1.
T: Great! Let’s continue checking the rest of the answers.
(Check all the answers with the class)
T: Well done, everyone! You all listened very carefully.
1c Activity
T: Next, we’re going to do 1c. You’ll hear the statements again. This time, fill in the blanks in the sentences below. Listen carefully and write down the missing words. I’ll play the recording twice. The first time, try to get the general idea and write down some key words. The second time, fill in the blanks more completely.
(Play the recording twice)
T: Time to check the answers. For the first sentence “I was late for school because I ______.”, what’s the answer?
S14: I was late for school because I overslept.
T: Correct! How about the second one “My car ______ on the way to work, so I had to call a taxi.”?
S15: My car got a flat tire on the way to work, so I had to call a taxi.
T: Perfect! Let’s check the rest of the sentences together.
(Check all the sentences with the class)
T: You’re all doing an amazing job with these listening exercises!
1d Activity
T: Now, it’s time for 1d. Work with a partner. One of you will be Student A, and the other will be Student B. Student A, look at your information on the left. Student B, look at your information on the right. Take turns asking and answering questions to complete the chart. For example, Student A can ask “Why was Tom late for the meeting?”, and Student B can answer according to the information. You have five minutes to complete this task.
(Students work with their partners to complete the chart)
T: Time’s up! Which pair would like to come to the front and share your completed chart?
(Invite a pair of students to come to the front and share their answers)
T: Great job! Your answers are very clear and correct. Let’s give them a big hand!
1e Activity
T: Finally, for 1e, we’re going to have a role - play. You can choose one of the situations from 1a or create your own unexpected event situation. Then, act it out with your partner. Try to use the words and expressions we’ve learned today. You can also add some emotions and actions to make your role - play more interesting. You have eight minutes to prepare.
(Students prepare their role - plays)
T: Okay, who’s ready to show us your wonderful role - plays?
(Invite several pairs of students to perform their role - plays in front of the class)
T: Wow! You all did an excellent job! Your role - plays were so vivid and full of English expressions. I’m really proud of you!
Summary
T: Now, let’s summarize what we’ve learned today. We learned some new words and phrases related to unexpected events, such as “oversleep”, “get a flat tire”, etc. We practiced our listening skills through 1b and 1c, and we also improved our speaking ability by doing the pair work in 1d and the role - play in 1e. Remember, English is all about using the language in different situations, and today’s activities have helped you do just that.
Homework
T: For homework, I want you to write a short story about an unexpected event that happened to you or someone you know. Use at least five words or phrases we learned today. You can also add some dialogues to make your story more interesting. We’ll share our stories in the next class.
