They speak more than 20 languages. As they prepare their instruments, a smiling man walks in. He greets everyone, steps onto the stage, and raises his baton (指挥棒). Music fills the room. This is a music group called the Hope Orchestra, organized by John Smith. Since 2016, his free program has given homeless people from other countries, young people in need, and native Swedes the chance to learn an instrument, connect with others, and enrich their lives. Smith grew up in a poor family in Venezuela. To help his family make ends meet, he started selling ice cream when he was in primary school. Across the street was a program called Music for All, which provides free classical music training to children who have no chance to learn it. At 10, Smith joined the group. “I fell in love with music from my first class,” he said. “For me, playing the violin is like feeling electricity.” He also appreciated the group’s inclusive (包容的) philosophy. “It didn’t matter whether I was the boy selling ice cream in front of the school or the son or daughter of the mayor,” he said. Finally, Smith worked for Music for All to help spread the group’s innovative (创新的) teaching methods worldwide. Even near the Arctic Circle, he started Greenland’s first youth orchestra. It was this work that led him to first visit Sweden in 2015. In Stockholm, he was shocked to see many helpless people arriving in the country. The following year, he moved to Gothenburg where he offered a music group for those people. He started with 13 students. Most of them had no background in music, but he lent them instruments and began teaching them. He named the group the Hope Orchestra to inspire them. “For me, that’s what a music education is about,” said Smith. “It’s about giving you new opportunities to learn about life, about challenges, about dreaming, and about connecting you to your soul.” 4. What can you see in the Hope Orchestra? A. The performers on the stage are all locals. B. Young people are not allowed to take part in it. C. The rising baton marks the start of music. D. The conductor is unwilling to perform. 5. Why did Smith found Hope Orchestra? A. To make more people perform. B. To improve people’s life. C. To enrich the rich’s daily life. D. To help his family earn money. 6. How did Smith feel about the atmosphere of Music for All? A. Equal. B. Demanding. C. Popular. D. Ambitious. 7. What is Smith mainly talking about in the last paragraph? A. Music can contribute to the dreams. B. Music is of great significance. C. Music can make people successful. D. Music can unite you and me. C AI is advanced enough to take over the basic function of driving a vehicle, but driving needs so much more than just piloting a car. Human beings perform a vast variety of tasks in a car. The fact is, human beings won’t completely be out of the driver’s seat anytime soon. We still have the edge over AI because we think like other human beings. We anticipate that other drivers or pedestrians may not always follow the rules of the road, or they may behave in unpredictable ways. We know this not from a driving manual, but from life experience. We subconsciously respond to situations in a very human way. Eventually, learning algorithms (算法) will be developed to imitate some of our gut (本能的) reactions, but this will take time. So far, there’s been little effort on the part of either the automobile industry or public safety officials to bring the public up to speed: When people hear the term autonomous car, they are often under the mistaken belief that the role of the human driver has been removed, that he or she is now downgraded to the role of passenger. “The biggest misconception about automation is that the more automation there is, the less human competence is needed. Actually, the more you automate, the more you need to educate: where, when, how, etc.,” observes Bryan Reimer, a research scientist at MIT’s Center for Transportation and Logistics. He has studied driver behavior as it relates to automation and raises an interesting point: as our automobiles assume more and more of the tasks of their operation, there is a risk that human beings will lose some of the real-world driving experiences that make us competent drivers. This is fine as long as the car remains in control. But in a world of semi-autonomous vehicles, the drivers may become less equipped to handle the complicated operation that would stump (难倒) the software. “The way we approach driver training will likely need an upgrade to accommodate to the new world of semi-autonomous cars. It doesn’t look like we’re going to have to shut down our driving schools anytime soon,” Bryan Reimer added. 8. What does the author say about driving? A. Its basic function is still complicated for AI. B. It involves many repetitive and boring tasks. C. It requires more than operating a vehicle. D. It needs the driver’s full attention to the road. 9. What does the underlined word “edge” mean in paragraph 2? A. Profit B. Convenience C. Advantage D. Access 10. What does Bryan Reimer imply about automation? A. It may cause drivers to be less able to handle complex situations. B. It plays an important role in improving traffic safety. C It reduces the need for drivers’ professional competence. D. It alters the relationship between drivers and passengers. 11. What should people do to adapt to semi-autonomous driving? A. Upgrade automation technologies. B. Change their perception of AI. C. Open more driving schools. D. Update driver training programs. D You may not know it, but your brain is already an amazing vocabulary learning machine. When you read or listen to something, your brain doesn’t take each word at face value: it’s continuously taking statistics about which words appear together regularly so that it can expect what’s coming next and process speech faster. Our brains continuously release electrical signals, which change depending on what task your brain is dealing with. Scientists can use a technique to read some of these to study how your brain processes language. One of these signals, called N400, changes depending on whether words make sense in context or not. The N400 is relatively small for expected word combinations, like coffee and cream, and increases in height for unexpected word combinations, like coffee and cap. This means that scientists can read the N400 height to analyze the kind of expectations you have about which words usually appear together. In language learners, the N400 changes based on proficiency (熟练程度). The better people get at a language, the closer their N400 pattern is to native speaker’s. This means that an important part of language proficiency is taking statistics and building expectations about what words usually appear together, just as native speakers do. To get better at this, we need to flood our brains with loads of natural content, so we can build up a picture of which kinds of words usually appear together. Reading is a great way to do this and there’s lots of research that shows that reading works wonders for your vocabulary skills. However, it is important to remember that if there are too many unknown words, it can be difficult to figure out what they mean from the context. And it is unpleasant having to stop every two miles to look up a word. Graded readers, which are books adapted to make them easier to understand at lower levels, are perfect for learners of foreign languages. 12. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 1? A. To state a fact. B. To offer a suggestion. C. To make a comparison. D. To propose a definition. 13. What does it mean if the N400 increases? A. We make sense of some word combinations in a context. B. We combine some new words to make a sentence. C. We memorize some word combinations to learn a language. D. We meet some word combinations beyond our expectations. 14. How can we have a native speaker-like N400 pattern according to the author? A. By reading some books about vocabulary skills. B. By reading lots of natural content. C. By reading loads of books about nature and drawing pictures. D. By reading authentic content to increase our vocabulary. 15. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. It is more beneficial to read easy books. B. It is important to look up new words. C. We should mainly read adapted books. D. We should choose materials right for our level. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 In the journey of high school, it is easy for teenagers to lose themselves in choosing the future path. So setting personal goals is significant as it provides direction and motivation. ___16___. Do self-assessment as soon as possible Self-assessment is the basis of goal-setting. Students must evaluate their strengths, weaknesses, interests and values. This self-examination helps identify areas that need improvement and those where they can excel. Here is an example. ___17___, setting goals to improve mathematical skills while pursuing literary achievements would be balanced and realistic. Set SMART goals Goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). ___18___. Instead, a SMART goal would be “improving the math grade from a C to an A within the next semester.” This specificity guides the student’s efforts and makes progress measurable. Combine short-term and long-term goals For most senior high students, a long-term goal might be getting into an excellent university, while short-term goals could include achieving a certain GPA or completing advanced coursework. Break down larger goals into smaller and manageable tasks. ___19___. So short-term goals act as stepping stones to long-term ambition. ___20___ As students grow and learn more about themselves, their goals may need adjustment. Being open to revising goals ensures they remain consistent with evolving interests and circumstances. The excitement was clear as the students worked hard to perfect every scene and every line. The play was a fantasy tale about a magical key that could unlock a hidden world. David, who was in charge of the sound effects, took his job seriously. He loved how each sound brought the story to life, making his classmates’ performances even better. He worked hard during rehearsals (排练), paying close attention to the actors and actresses as they spoke their lines, and he repeated them in his head. He also noted the action cutes (提示) carefully in order to make the right sound effect at the perfect moment. Everything was going smoothly until, just two days before the performance, David came home with bad news. “Grandad, Anthony broke his arm while practicing his bike jump on his way home.” “Oh, I’m sorry to hear that.” “He’ll make a full recovery. But by losing Anthony, we now don’t have a main character, the Key-master. Miss Tompkins says we might have to cancel the play. You know, after all that hard work, rehearsals, artwork, lights...” David and Grandad fell silent thinking about the situation. After a few minutes, Grandad broke the silence, “I know —” he said. “Each evening that you’ve come back from rehearsals, you always recite the lines. You must know them all by now. Why don’t you play the Key-master?” “Because I can’t do it.” “How do you know unless you try? It doesn’t matter how well you do, as everyone will be on your side and cheer you on.” “Yeah. Maybe I should give it a go,” David said. The next day, David told Miss Tompkins about his idea. “Well, David, that’s fantastic!” Miss Tompkins smiled. “And I will take over sound effect responsibilities.” 注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 David practiced hard before the performance. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ At the close of the performance, Miss Tompkins took the stage to congratulate everyone. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 六安二中2024-2025学年度第二学期高一年级期末考试 英语试卷 分值:150分 时间:120分钟 注意事项: 1. 1.Who will look after the kids?
