【教学过程】
Step 1: Greeting and Revision
T: Good morning, class! How are you today?
S: Fine, thank you. And you?
T: I'm great, too. Before we start our new lesson, let's do a quick revision. Who can tell me the structure of the past progressive tense?
S: The structure is was/were + verb - ing.
T: Very good! Now, I'll show you some pictures. Please describe what the people in the pictures were doing using the past progressive tense. (Show some pictures on the PPT)
T: Look at the first picture. What was the girl doing?
S: The girl was reading a book.
T: Excellent. And the second picture?
S: The boys were playing basketball.
T: Great job. Now, let's move on to some sentences. I'll give you the prompts, and you make sentences with the past progressive tense. For example, I say "he/watch TV/at 8:00 last night", you should say "He was watching TV at 8:00 last night." Are you ready?
S: Yes.
T: "they/have a party/yesterday evening"
S: They were having a party yesterday evening.
T: Perfect. "she/draw a picture/when her mother came back"
S: She was drawing a picture when her mother came back.
T: Well done. It seems that you all have a good understanding of the past progressive tense. Now, let's start our new journey in this unit.
Step 2: Pre - writing (3a)
T: In this part, we are going to talk about an important event that you remember well. First, let's think about some questions. What kind of questions do we need to consider when we talk about an event? (Write the following words on the blackboard: what, when, where, who, why)
T: Look at the blackboard. When we describe an event, we usually need to know what the event was, when it happened, where it happened, who was involved, and why it was important. Now, I'll give you a few minutes to discuss in groups. Share an important event in your life with your group members, and answer these questions about it. (Students discuss in groups)
T: OK, time's up. Who would like to share their event with the whole class?
S1: An important event that I remember well was the school sports meeting. It happened last month on our school playground. I was running in the 400 - meter race. My friends were cheering for me. It was important because I won the first prize.
T: Wow, that's amazing! Congratulations! What about someone else?
S2: I remember the day when I got my first pet. It happened two years ago at a pet shop. I was choosing a puppy, and my parents were helping me. It was important because the puppy has been my best friend ever since.
T: That's really sweet. Now, open your books to page [number]. Look at 3a. There is a form for you to fill in. Based on the event you just shared in your group, fill in the form with the necessary information. You can also use the examples we just heard to help you. (Students fill in the form)
T: Let's check the answers together. Who wants to share their filled - in form?
S3: What was the event? The school art exhibition. When did it happen? Last Friday. Where did it happen? In the school hall. What were you doing? I was showing my painting. What were your friends doing? They were looking at other students' works. Why was it important? Because my painting won an award.
T: Very good. It seems that you all have some interesting events to share. This form will be very useful for our next step - writing.
Step 3: While - writing (3b)
T: Now, it's time for us to write a passage about the important event you chose. Look at the writing guide in 3b. First, we need to write about the event, that is, when and where it happened. Just like you filled in the form, start your passage with "An important event that I remember well was... It happened on/in... at/in... "
T: For example, "An important event that I remember well was the school sports meeting. It happened on May 10th on our school playground." Now, start writing this part on your own. (Students write)
T: Next, we need to write about what you and some of your friends were doing when this event happened. Use the past progressive tense. You can say "When I heard the news of this event/When this event happened, I was... My friends were... " For instance, "When I heard that the sports meeting was about to start, I was warming up. My friends were preparing the posters to cheer for me." Go ahead and write this part. (Students continue writing)
T: Then, write about why this event was important. You can say "This event is very important to me because... /I remember this event well because... " Such as "This event is very important to me because it was the first time I won a big prize in sports. It made me more confident." Finish this part of your writing. (Students complete the last part)
T: Remember, try to write three paragraphs following this structure. After you finish writing, exchange your passages with your partners. Read each other's writings and check for grammar mistakes, spelling mistakes, and whether the information is clear. You can also give some suggestions to make the passage better. (Students exchange and check)
Step 4: Post - writing
T: OK, class. Let's stop here. Who would like to share their passage with the whole class? Volunteer!
S4: An important event that I remember well was the school trip to the museum. It happened last month on a sunny day. We went to the city museum by bus. When we arrived at the museum, I was looking around in excitement. My friends were chatting about the exhibits. This event was very important to me because I learned a lot about our local history and culture. I also had a great time with my classmates.
T: Wonderful! Your passage is very clear and well - written. The description of what you and your friends were doing makes the event more vivid. Let's give S4 a big hand.
T: Another volunteer?
S5: An important event that I remember well was my first piano performance. It happened two weeks ago at the school auditorium. When the performance started, I was playing the piano nervously. My friends were sitting in the audience, looking at me with encouraging eyes. This event is very important to me because it was a big challenge for me. Overcoming this challenge made me more brave.
T: Excellent! You expressed your feelings very well. It's a really touching story.
T: After listening to these wonderful passages, I believe you all have a better understanding of how to write about an important event using the past progressive tense.
Step 5: Self - Check 1
T: Now, let's turn to the Self - Check part. Look at Self - Check 1. We need to fill in the blanks with when or while. Do you still remember the difference between when and while?
T: When can be used to introduce a short action or a long action. It often means "at that time". While is usually used to introduce a long action, and it means "during the time that". Now, read the sentences carefully and choose the correct word to fill in the blanks. (Students do the exercise)
T: Let's check the answers. For the first sentence, "_ I was walking home from school, I saw a strange light in the sky. But _ I pointed it out to my friend, it went away."
S: While; when
T: Correct. While is used for the long action of walking home, and when is used for the short action of pointing out. The second sentence, "_ I told my older brother about the strange light in the sky, he just laughed and didn't believe me."
S: When
T: Right. Telling is a short action, so we use when. The third sentence, "_ my brother was laughing, the television news reported that other people had seen the light as well."
S: While
T: Great. Laughing is a long action, so we use while.
Step 6: Self - Check 2
T: Move on to Self - Check 2. Here, we need to fill in the blanks with the correct forms of the words in brackets. First, read the passage carefully to understand the context. Then, think about the correct form of the verb, whether it should be in the past progressive tense, simple past tense, or other tenses according to the meaning. Start doing it. (Students do the exercise)
T: Let's check. For the first blank, "I _ (play) the guitar when my friend came in."
S: was playing
T: Good. Because when the friend came in (a short action in the past), the playing of the guitar was in progress, so we use the past progressive tense. The second blank, "They _ (not watch) TV at 9:00 last night. They _ (listen) to music."
S: weren't watching; were listening
T: Correct. We use the past progressive tense to describe two actions that were happening at the same time in the past.
Step 7: Summary
T: Class, today we have learned a lot. We reviewed the past progressive tense and used it to write about important events in our lives. We also learned how to use when and while correctly in different situations. Remember, practice makes perfect. You can write more passages about your past experiences to improve your writing skills and your understanding of the past progressive tense.
T: For homework, I want you to rewrite your passage about the important event you wrote in class. Make sure there are no grammar or spelling mistakes. And you can add more details to make it more interesting. Also, review what we learned today and be ready for a small quiz in the next class.
T: That's all for today. Class is over. Goodbye, everyone!
S: Goodbye, teacher!
