“Whatever the mind can conceive (构思) and believe, it can achieve.” Would you agree with the statement that a dream is born from an idea — a simple idea in the mind? Back in the 19th century, two brothers had an idea which eventually became their passionate and consuming dream. Their insistent pursuit of that dream was rewarded with an achievement that changed world travel.
On December 17 1903, the Wright brothers (Wilbur and Orville) achieved their dream. They flew the world’s first power-driven and heavier-than-air machine. This memorable feat took place at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on a cold windy morning.
The dream started with an idea that was planted in their minds by a toy given to them by their father. In the words of the boys, “Late in the autumn of 1878, our father came into the house one evening with some object partly hid in his hands, and before we could see what it was, he threw it into the air. Instead of falling to the floor, as we expected, it flew across the room till it struck the ceiling, where it flew a while, and finally sank to the floor.” This simple toy made of bamboo and stretched rubber bands fascinated the Wright brothers and sparked their lifelong interest in human flight.
The Wright brothers were great thinkers. They enjoyed learning new things. Initially, they recycled broken parts to build a printing press and opened their own printing office. Their interest moved to bicycles and in 1893, they opened the Wright Cycle Company where they sold and repaired bicycles. But Wilbur (the older brother) had his mind set on something more exciting. He decided to seriously pursue flying.
4. What does the author want to stress in paragraph 1?
A. Ideas are always achievable. B. Mind can turn ideas into reality.
C. Only simple ideas can be achieved. D. Dreams are born from simple ideas.
5. What did the father do for the Wright brothers?
A. He planted special seeds for them. B. He taught them how to employ bamboo.
C. He gave them a special toy. D. He guided them on career planning.
6. Which of the following can best describe the Wright brothers?
A. Innovative and curious. B. Thoughtful and sociable.
C. Adaptable and extraordinary. D. Influential and sensitive.
7. What can we know about the Wright brothers?
A. They avoided taking a risk. B. Their printing business failed.
C. They liked exploring new ideas. D. Their firms were distributed worldwide.

The increase of a protein called alpha-synclein in the brain has long been considered the fundamental cause of Parkinson’s (帕金森病). This leads to the reduced production of dopamine (多巴胺), which helps control muscle movement. While some existing treatments aim to ease these symptoms by improving dopamine levels in the brain, their long-term effects are limited. So far, there are no approved treatments that can end or slow the progression of Parkinson’s.
In an effort to combat this, Gennaro Pagano and his colleagues at Roche, a Swiss pharmaceutical company, developed a new drug called prasinezumab to fight against the build-up of proteins in Parkinson’s disease. They tested the drug on 316 people with early-stage Parkinson’s disease. Among the participants,105 received a placebo, while 211 received the actual drug at either a low or high dose (剂量). At first, the results suggested that the drug had no meaningful impact, but the team later realized it might be effective among those with more severe Parkinson’s.
Additional analysis showed that low and high doses of the drug had a greater effect among the severe participants than seen in the initial work. Compared with taking a placebo, it significantly reduced the rate at which participants’ physical symptoms worsened over the year-long period. Gennaro Pagano, the lead researcher, explains that this could be because people with more rapidly progressing Parkinson’s tend to have higher levels of alpha-synuclein in their brains and, therefore, may benefit more from a drug that potentially clears the protein.
However, Vinata Vedam-Mai at the University of Florida Health says one limitation of the research is that it doesn’t assess whether alpha-synuclein is being cleared from the brain. She would also like to see longer-term data to better determine the drug’s safety and effectiveness. However, the latest trial did not report any serious negative events.
8. What is prasinezumab intended for?
A. Improving dopamine levels in the brain.
B. Controlling the progression of Parkinson’s.
C. Increasing the build-up of proteins in the brain.
D. Slowing the aging of Parkinson’s suffers’ muscles.
9. What did the initial outcome of the test show about the drug?
A. It had no significant effects.
B. It was harmful to patients’ health.
C. It required higher doses to be effective.
D. It succeeded in treating early-stage Parkinson’s.
10. Who may benefit most from the new drug according to the study?
A. Patients who had severe Parkinson’s.
B. Patients who took a placebo in the test.
C. Patients who received higher doses of drugs.
D. Patients who had lower alpha-synuclein levels in the brain.
11. What does Vedam-Mai think of the new research?
A. It fails to achieve the expected outcome.
B. It proves the safety and effectiveness of the drug.
C. It was a major breakthrough in treating Parkinson’s.
D. It requires additional statistics to evaluate the drug.
D
One bird may not make a summer but seeing or hearing birds does improve mental wellbeing, a ground-breaking study in the journal Scientific Reports has found.
Researchers tracked 1,292 participants’ everyday encounters with birds last year via a smartphone app called Urban Mind. Over the course of two weeks, the participants, from the UK, Europe, the US, China and Australia, were asked every two hours to document how they were feeling, including whether they were happy or stressed.
The researchers found that participants’ average mental wellbeing scores increased when they saw or heard birds, including among those who said they had been diagnosed (诊断) with depression.
Andrea Mechelli, professor of early intervention (干涉) in mental health at King’s College London, said that the positive effect of bird encounters on people with depression was significant because many “interventions that help so-called ‘healthy people’ don’t work for individuals with mental health issues”. Mechelli said, “We know exercise makes everyone feel better. But it’s so challenging to motivate someone with depression to exercise, while contact with bird life is something that, perhaps, is feasible.”
Adrian Thomas, the author of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds’ Guide to Birdsong, said the report’s findings came as no surprise as most people described their reaction to birdsong as joy. He added, “Birdsong would have once been the natural soundtrack to all human lives, and I do think that it is rooted somewhere deep within us. It is related with spring and good times coming, which is just one of the reasons why we need to appreciate the role of birds in our life and ensure that nature.”
12. What were the participants asked to do?
A. Keep record of moods. B. Keep track of birds.
C. Analyze feeling changes. D. Report health issues.
13. What does the underline word “feasible” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Inspiring. B. Practicable. C. Ineffective. D. Measurable.
14. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. A reasonable doubt to the research question. B. Potential application of the research results.
C. A further explanation of the research findings. D. Detailed descriptions of the research process.
15. Which of the following may the research contribute to?
A. Stress relief methods. B. Bird watching activity.
C. Mental health treatment. D. Bird protection campaign.

Ahmed is a sixth-grade student and his older brother Faraz, who studies at a nearby college while working part-time, frequently sends small gifts home, delighting his younger brother with surprises. However, Ahmed would spend so much time playing with these gifts when alone that he became careless with his studies. This was starting to affect his school performance, causing him to fall behind his classmates.
Recently, Ahmed discovered a passion for music and often imagined how amazing it would be to own a pair of high-quality headphones for his favorite songs. As his birthday drew near, he couldn’t stop thinking about those special headphones. When he excitedly called Faraz to ask for them, Faraz promised him a basketball as the birthday gift, but added that the headphones would only come if Ahmed earned good grades that semester.
Determined to earn his reward, Ahmed put away all distractions and buried himself in study every day. Hard work became his routine and sometimes he even missed meals, worrying his mother enough that she began bringing food to his room. As exams approached, Ahmed became so focused that his birthday nearly slipped his mind.
The day of Ahmed’s birthday finally arrived. Early in the morning, his friends showed up at the door and his parents came from behind with a cake. Together, they all cheered, “Happy Birthday!”
The celebration was wonderful, and Ahmed received many gifts, including the basketball that Faraz had promised and mailed since his college schedule kept him away. While pleased with the basketball, Ahmed couldn’t help but wonder about the headphones. Had Faraz hidden them somewhere in the house and planned to give them to him only after the exam results? What if his exam results weren’t good enough?
After the party, curiosity and anxiety overcame Ahmed. He sneaked (溜) into Faraz’s room where his eyes were immediately drawn to the headphone box. Unable to contain his excitement, Ahmed took it to hide in his own room secretly.
Paragraph 1:
Days passed, and Faraz returned home on the day Ahmed’s exam results were announced.

On December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers (Wilbur and Orville) achieved their dream.

【答案】8. B 9. A 10. A 11.

13 What does the underline word “feasible” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Inspiring.

【答案】范文
Days passed, and Faraz returned home on the day Ahmed’s exam results were announced. After school that day, Ahmed raced home, excitedly sharing that he’d come in second in his class. The family was overjoyed, and Faraz proudly declared, “Ahmed, you’ve earned your reward!” But when Faraz returned empty-handed from his room, his face fell. “They’re gone,” he said, confused. After an awkward silence among the family, Ahmed spoke in a shaky voice, “I took them ... I was afraid you would withhold them if I failed.” He then fetched the headphones and handed them to Faraz.
Faraz was disappointed, saying Ahmed had stolen something meant to be his. Feeling ashamed, Ahmed cried and ran to his room. Concerned, Faraz came to Ahmed and found him in bed, face buried in his pillow. When Ahmed felt his brother’s touch, he turned and hugged him, apologizing through tears. Faraz hugged him back. “What you did was wrong,” he said gently, “but recognizing your mistake is what matters.” Ahmed nodded, wiping his eyes. “I’ll never do it again.” With a warm smile, Faraz patted his head and said, “Come on! Your headphones are waiting.”
