When does a hill become a mountain? Well, there is no worldwide agreement, but in the UK, a mountain must have a summit (顶峰) height of 610 meters or more. Here are our top picks of the best mountains in the UK to climb.
Ben Nevis -1,345 m
Ben Nevis in the Scottish Highlands is the highest mountain in the UK, and also the most famous. The nearby town of Fort William attracts 100,000 visitors a year. Thousands take the bus to the foot of the mountain to attempt the 9-mile hike. If you have good fitness, a walk to the highest top takes around 4 hours. The view from the top is usually limited by cloud cover, but that won’t lessen your sense of achievement at climbing the UK’s tallest mountain!
Ben Macdui-1,309 m
At 600 m, the car park of the Cairngorm Ski Centre is the starting point for a hike across the highest mountain range (山脉) in the UK. This includes the second highest mountain, Ben Macdui. The 11-mile/7-hour route (路线) passes two pretty lakes.
Braeriach -1,296 m
The name of the third highest mountain in the UK comes from the Scottish Gaelic Am Braigh Riabhach meaning “The Grey Uplands”. It’s a fitting name for this mountain which has a north facing slope (斜坡) It’s a cold spot and has only been snow free just seven times in the past 100 years! From the “Sugar Bowl” car park it’s a 5.6-mile/8-hour walk.
Cairn Gorm -1,245 m
Although it’s the sixth highest mountain in the UK, Cairn Gorm is probably the most famous after Ben Nevis as it gives its name to the beautiful Cairngorms National Park. The climb takes 3 to 4 hours-quicker than many! It’s a popular one to try first, or could even be considered if you’re walking with energetic kids.

As a foreigner living in China, I showed great interest in the beautiful, various characters (文字) that seemed to hold so much meaning and history. Wanting to learn more, I decided to start a journey to learn Chinese calligraphy (中国书法), an ancient and great art form in China. Little did I know, I was about to be lost in a world of patience and self-expression.
I began by researching the history of Chinese calligraphy and the different styles: the bold and strong oracle bone script (甲骨文), the elegant and flowing grass script, and the standard script, which is used in modern Chinese writing. Armed with this knowledge, I found out a local calligraphy teacher and began my lessons.
My first few attempts were clumsy, as I struggled to grasp the brush and control the ink. It was challenging to keep the correct posture and balance while writing, and I found myself tired after hours of practice. However, my teacher encouraged me to keep going and not be discouraged by my lack of experience.
Over time, I came to realize that the fundamental essence (精髓) of Chinese calligraphy is not simply the writing itself but also the spirit and feelings behind it. Each stroke (笔画) and each character have their own distinct rhythm and cadence (抑扬顿挫). The more I practiced, the more I became used to this pattern, and my writing began to flow more freely.
My journey to learn Chinese calligraphy has not only deepened my appreciation for Chinese culture but also taught me valuable life lessons. It has taught me the importance of patience, perseverance, and self-expression. Now, when I look at Chinese characters, I see not just their beauty but also the stories and emotions they hold within.
24. What inspired the author to learn Chinese calligraphy?
A. Its popularity in modern Chinese society.
B. The simple process of mastering basic techniques.
C. The beauty and historical depth of Chinese characters.
D. A requirement for living in China.
25. Which calligraphy style is used in modern Chinese writing?
A. Standard script. B. Grass script.
C. Oracle bone script. D. Running script.
26. What was the author’s challenge in learning calligraphy?
A. Understanding historical scripts. B. Having trouble keeping the right posture and balance.
C. Interpreting the rhythm of strokes (笔画节奏). D. Finding time for practice.
27. According to the text, what does Chinese calligraphy fundamentally express?
A. Technical perfection in writing. B. Speed and efficiency of creation.
C. The spirit and emotions behind characters D. Strict adherence (坚持) to traditional rules.
【答案】24. C 25. A 26. B 27. C

Adaptation and innovation (创新) of traditional opera has been an important trend (趋势) in Chinese opera circle in recent years. In order to attract young audience of new generation and catch up with the time, traditional opera circle makes efforts to create new works. In recent years, traditional opera has come across the change of time and society. It gradually lost the main elderly audience and was not attractive for the young.
In order to find new opportunities, using modern sound, light and digital stage effects, China’s traditional Peking Opera, also known as jingju, attracts young people in a fashionable and innovative way, as the classic art faces an aging audience.
The centuries-old Tianleyuan Theater in Beijing has introduced fashionable performances of Peking Opera. The opera combines instrumental music (器乐), vocal performance, mime (哑剧表演), dance and acrobatics (杂技).
Tianleyuan has a jingju art experience section and fashionable performances. It has attracted more than 2,000 audience members, mostly young people, according to theater staff.

The story of our home galaxy (星系) may tend to be changed. That’s because a bar-shaped collection of stars (棒状恒星群) at the center of the Milky Way appears to be much younger than expected.
The bar is a prominent feature of our galaxy. It covers thousands of light years and connects the galaxy’s arms of stars, making them look like spinning (旋转) water. In computer models of the Milky Way’s development, the bar tends to form early in the galaxy’s around 13-billion-year lifetime. But the ages and locations of metal-rich stars suggest the bar finished forming just a few billion years ago, researchers report.
“These metal-rich stars are basically like records of ancient stars that are telling the story of our home galaxy,” says Samir Nepal, working at the Leibruz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam in Germany.
Stars with large numbers of metals are built from the remains (残骸) of stars that have since exploded. Those metals enrich the materials at the center of galaxies like the Milky Way, which is why a new generation of metal-rich stars can form only deep inside galaxies.
Using data from the European Space Agency, Nepal and his coworkers recreated the development of the Milky Way bar through its influence on the metal-rich stars. They inferred the bar’s history, just as you might know where the batters (击球手) stand in a baseball game by looking at the flight of the balls they hit, even if you can’t see home plate (本垒板).
In the study, the researchers found out a burst (迸发) of star formation in the central part of the galaxy that became quiet about 3 billion years ago. The down turn seems to mark the end of the Milky Way bar’s development, the researchers report. After that burst, the inflow of new material into the bar probably dropped off significantly. That may explain why the bar developed so late.
32. What does the underlined word “prominent” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Useless. B. Small. C. Noticeable. D. Hidden.
33. What can we know about metal-rich stars from Nepal’s words?
A. They are formed in recent years.
B. They are primarily located in the outer arms of the Milky Way.
C. They contain fewer metals than ancient stars.
D. They serve as historical records showing the galaxy’s past.
34. Why does the author mention a baseball game?
A. To show the popularity of baseball in the Milky Way.
B. To explain how scientists track the age of the bar.
C. To compare the effects of the metal-rich stars.
D. To compare the speed of star formation to the speed of a baseball.
35. Which of the following would be the best title for this article?
A. Baseball in the Milky Way: An Unexpected Connection
B. The European Space Agency’s Contribution to Galaxy Research
C. A Bar of Stars: A Surprisingly Young Structure
D. The Formation of Spinning Water in Galaxies
【答案】32. C 33. D 34. B 35. C

根据第一段“That’s because a bar-shaped collection of stars (棒状恒星群) at the center of the Milky Way appears to be much younger than expected.(这是因为银河系中心的一个棒状恒星群似乎比预期的要年轻得多)”以及第二段“The bar is a prominent feature of our galaxy. It covers thousands of light years and connects the galaxy’s arms of stars, making them look like spinning (旋转) water. (这个棒状恒星群是我们星系的一个prominent特征。它覆盖了数千光年,连接着星系的恒星臂,使它们看起来像旋转的水)”可知,这个棒状恒星群非常巨大,塑造了银河系的形态,是银河系的一个显著特征,prominent在此处意为“显著的,引人注目的”,与noticeable意思相近。故选C项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段““These metal-rich stars are basically like records of ancient stars that are telling the story of our home galaxy,” says Samir Nepal, working at the Leibruz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam in Germany. (“这些富含金属的恒星基本上就像古代恒星的记录,讲述着我们银河系的故事,”在德国波茨坦莱布尼茨天体物理研究所工作的萨米尔·尼泊尔说)”可知,富含金属的恒星是一种古老的记录,展现了银河系的历史。故选D项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“Using data from the European Space Agency, Nepal and his coworkers recreated the development of the Milky Way bar through its influence on the metal-rich stars. They inferred the bar’s history, just as you might know where the batters stand in a baseball game by looking at the flight of the balls they hit, even if you can’t see home plate.
根据第一段“The story of our home galaxy (星系) may tend to be changed. That’s because a bar-shaped collection of stars (棒状恒星群) at the center of the Milky Way appears to be much younger than expected.(我们银河系的故事可能会发生改变。这是因为银河系中心的一个棒状恒星群似乎比预期的要年轻得多)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要介绍了一项研究发现,银河系中心的棒状恒星群可能比预期年轻,并解释了这一恒星群的重要意义、该研究的研究方法和具体结果。因此,C项“棒状恒星看起来出奇的年轻”最契合文章主旨,适合作为文章标题。故选C项。

It was a beautiful day for sightseeing. We were a group of students just out for some fun. The weather was perfect for a picnic, so when lunch time came, we set our sights on a small park. Since we all had different things to buy, we decided to get what each of us wanted, and meet back on the grass in a few minutes.
When my friend Joy headed for a hot dog shop, I decided to go with her. We watched the seller put together the perfect hot dog, just the way we wanted it. But when we took out our money to pay the bill, the seller surprised us.
“You are the first customers to visit, and the first order is given to you for free,” he said.
After we thanked him, we joined our friends in the park, and dug into our food. But as we talked and ate, I was distracted (分心) by a man sitting alone nearby, looking at us. I could tell that he hadn’t showered for days. Another homeless person, I thought, like all the others you see in cities. I didn’t pay much more attention than that.
After we finished eating, we packed our lunch bags and prepared to throw them away.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】Suddenly, a strong voice came from that homeless person. He said, “Excuse me, would you mind sparing a meal for a hungry soul?” His words struck a chord in my heart, reminding me of the privilege and abundance that I often take for granted. Feeling a mix of guilt and compassion, I turned to face him. As we talked, I discovered that he was once an accomplished musician, full of dreams and aspirations. It was disheartening to hear how circumstances had pushed him to this point of desperation.
Joy asked me to wait for her for a minute and ran to the hot dog shop. She returned with an extra hot dog and a bottle of water in her hands. She handed them to the homeless man with a warm smile. His eyes sparkled with appreciation as he accepted the food. As I watched the exchange, a wave of realization washed over me. This encounter was more than just a random act of kindness; it was a reminder of the power we hold to make a difference in someone's life. I felt a renewed sense of empathy and the urge to do more.

B. The simple process of mastering basic techniques.
C. The beauty and historical depth of Chinese characters.
D. A requirement for living in China.
25. Which calligraphy style is used in modern Chinese writing?

“Good art should keep pace with the times, so does jingju,” said Zhang Zishang, a 22-year-old performer of The Drunken Beauty, one of the classic jingju plays performed in the theater. “I feel today’s performance is very special,” Zhang added. She was born into a family of jingju performers and has had 10 years of stage experience. “Innovation is good, but we must also carry on the basic parts of jingju,” another young performer Deng said.
According to Deng, innovation is perhaps the best way for jingju to deal with the problem of an aging audience. The theatre has made successful attempts to combine jingju with local opera forms such as ballet when organizing performances abroad. “Innovation can help traditional arts go further. We are happy to see many young faces, and some of them even come twice to experience the ‘new’ art,” she added.
28. What’s the main reason for innovation in the traditional Peking Opera (jingju) according to the passage?
A. To compete with movies and television shows.
B. To reduce production costs for performances.
C. To replace the old performers with younger ones.
D. To attract younger audience and deal with an aging audience base.
29. What do we know about Tianleyuan Theater?
A. It has attracted many young audience.
B. It will create a special jingju art experience section.
C. It shortens the length of traditional opera plays greatly.
D. It uses instrumental music and vocal performance only.
30. In the passage, what does “keep pace with the times” mentioned in paragraph 5 mean for jingju?
A. Completely replacing traditional parts with modern innovations.
B. To ignore the preferences of younger generations.
C To develop and adapt to present tastes while keeping basic parts.
D. Focusing only on the tastes of elderly audience members.
31. What’s Deng’s attitude towards the innovation of jingju?
A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Indifferent. D. Supportive.
