A One day, I received a call from a colleague. He was about to give a student a zero for his answer to a physical problem, while the student claimed a perfect score. I was elected as their arbiter. I read the examination problem:“Show how it is possible to determine the height of a tall building with the aid of a barometer(气压计).” The student had answered:“Take the barometer to the top of the building, attach a long rope to it,lower it to the street, and then bring it up, measuring the length of the rope. The length of it is the height of the building. ” The student had really answered the question completely, but the answer didn’t confirm his competence in physics. I suggested the student try again. I gave him six minutes to answer the question, warning that the answer should show some knowledge of physics. Five minutes later, he said he had many answers and clashed off one, which read: “Take the barometer to the top of the building and lean over the edge of the roof. Drop the barometer, timing its fall with a stopwatch. Then, use the physical formula (公式)to calculate the height of the building. ” At this point, my colleague had to accept it, and then the student made almost full marks. I couldn’t help asking the student what the other answers were. He listed many others ,and then added “Probably the best is to take the barometer to the administrator and said to him,' Sir, here is a fine barometer. If you tell me the height of the building, I will give it to you.,” Then, I asked the student if he really did not know the conventional answer to this question. He admitted that he did, but said that he was fed up with high school and college instructors trying to teach him how to think. The name of the student was Bohr who later was famous all over the world. He won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1922. 1.The student got a zero at the beginning because_______. A.the teacher wasn’t satisfied with him B.his answer wasn't complete or correct C.his answer didn’t show his knowledge of physics D.the teacher clicln5t fully understand his answer 2.We know from the passage that______. A.the teacher was a very stubborn person B.the administrator told Bohr the height C.the author preferred Bohr’ s last answer D.the student knew the expected answer 3.We can learn from the passage that______. A.instructors can teach students how to think B.students should be given more freedom in thinking C.arbiters can help students to get high scores D.teachers should make students use physical formulas B Nuclear expert Peng Shilu once said that he only did two things in his entire life: one was to build nuclear submarines (核潜艇), and the other to build nuclear power plants. Despite being one of the founding members of China’s nuclear power industry, Peng described himself as playing a tiny role in the task. In fact, he held leading positions in most of China’s early nuclear power projects, from the first-generation nuclear submarines to the establishment of Dayawan and Qinshan nuclear power stations. Peng was born in 1925 into a family of heroes. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Peng was selected to study chemical machinery (机械) in the Soviet Union. In 1956, when he was about to graduate, he faced a turning point in his life. At that time, the central government decided to select a group of outstanding students studying abroad to transfer to the atomic energy major. Peng willingly agreed, marking the beginning of his lifelong commitment to developing China’s nuclear power. In 1958, China started to independently develop its own nuclear submarines, and Peng was appointed to take charge of the research and design of the nuclear propulsion system. In the 1980s, China decided to build a commercial nuclear power plant. Appointed as the director-in-chief, Peng once again devoted himself to its preparation and construction. During his career, Peng held a variety of high-ranking titles. In 1994, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one of the top academic bodies in China. Peng passed away in Beijing on March 22, 2021 at the age of 96. The Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee awarded the title “Role Model of the Times” to Peng for his contributions. 4.What does the author imply in the first paragraph? A.Peng took interest in nothing but nuclear power. B.Peng was actually a very modest person. C.Peng played a tiny role in building nuclear power plants. D.Peng was the most important figure in the nuclear field. 5.What does the underlined part in the 2nd paragraph mean? A.Focus on. B.Know about. C.Turn to. D.Research into. 6.How does the author develop the passage? A.By following the time order. B.By showing the great importance. C.By providing some similar examples. D.By explaining the process of research. 7.Which of the following is the proper title for the passage? A.China Honors a Nuclear Power Expert B.Peng Shilu Built Nuclear Submarines C.China Lost a Famous Nuclear Expert D.A Nuclear Hero Devoted Himself to Helping His Country C Jenifer Mauer has needed more willpower than the typical college student to pursue her goal of earning a nursing degree. That willpower bore fruit when Jennifer graduated from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and became the first in her large family to earn a bachelor's degree. Mauer, of Edgar, Wisconsin, grew up on a farm in a family of 10 children. Her dad worked at a job away from the farm, and her mother ran the farm with the kids. After high school, Jennifer attended a local technical college, working to pay her tuition(学费), because there was no extra money set aside for a college education. After graduation, she worked to help her sisters and brothers pay for their schooling. Jennifer now is married and has three children of her own. She decided to go back to college to advance her career and to be able to better support her family while doing something she loves: nursing. She chose the UW-Eau Claire program at Ministry Saint Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield because she was able to pursue her four-year degree close to home. She could drive to class and be home in the evening to help with her kids. Jenifer received great support from her family as she worked to earn her degree: Her husband worked two jobs to cover the bills, and her 68-year-old mother helped take care of the children at times. Through it all, she remained in good academic standing and graduated with honors. Jennifer sacrificed(牺牲)to achieve her goal, giving up many nights with her kids and missing important events to study. ''Some nights my heart was breaking to have to pick between my kids and studying for exams or papers,'' she says. However, her children have learned an important lesson witnessing their mother earn her degree. Jennifer is a first-generation graduate and an inspiration to her family-and that's pretty powerful. 8.What did Jennifer do after high school? A.She helped her dad with his work. B.To learn from the best nurses. C.To save money for her parents. D.To find a well-paid job there. 10.What did Jennifer sacrifice to achieve her goal? A.Her health. B.Her time with family. C.Her reputation. D.Her chance of promotion. 11.What can we learn from Jenifer's story? A.Time is money. B.Love breaks down barriers. C.Hard work pays off. D.Education is the key to success. D Losing your ability to think and remember is pretty frightening. We know the risk of dementia (痴呆症) increases with age. But if you have memory slips, you probably needn’t worry. There are pretty clear differences between signs of dementia and age-related memory loss. After age 50, it’s quite common to have trouble remembering the names of people, places and things quickly, says Dr. Kirk Daffner of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. The brain ages just like the rest of the body. Certain parts become smaller, especially areas in the brain that are important to learning, memory and planning. Changes in brain cells can affect communication between different regions of the brain. And blood flow can be reduced as blood vessels narrow. Forgetting the name of an actor in a favorite movie, for example, is nothing to worry about. But if you forget the plot of the movie or don’t remember even seeing it, that’s far more concerning, Daffner says. When you forget entire experiences, he says, that’s “a red flag that something more serious may be involved”. Forgetting how to operate a familiar object like a microwave oven, or forgetting how to drive to the house of a friend you’ve visited many times before can also be signs of something going wrong. But even then, Daffner says, people shouldn’t panic. There are many things that can cause confusion and memory loss, including health problems like temporary stoppage of breathing during sleep, high blood pressure, or depression, as well as medications (药物) like antidepressants. You don’t have to figure this out on your own. Daffner suggests going to your doctor to check on medications, health problems and other issues that could be affecting memory. And the best defense against memory loss is to try to prevent it by building up your brain’s cognitive (认知的) reserve, Daffner says. “Read books, go to movies, take on new hobbies or activities that force one to think in novel ways.” he says. In other words, keep your brain busy and working. And also get physically active, because exercise is a widely known to boost the brain. 12.Which memory-related symptom should people take seriously? A.Totally forgetting how to do one’s daily routines. B.Inability to recall details of one’s life experiences. C.Failure to remember the names of movies or actors. D.Occasionally confusing the addresses of one’s friends. 13.What should people do when signs of serious memory loss show up? A.Check the brain’s cognitive reserve. B.Stop medications affecting memory. C.Turn to a professional for assistance. D.Exercise to improve their wellbeing. 14.What is Dr. Daffner’s advice for fight against memory loss? A.Having regular physical and mental checkups. B.Taking medicine that helps boost one’s brain. C.Engaging in known memory repair activities. D.Staying active both physically and mentally. 15.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “boost” in the last paragraph? A.Reduce. B.Benefit. C.Increase. D.Depress. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) How to Make the World a Better Place When you think about people who have made the world a better place, you probably think of famous scientists or great leaders. 16 Ordinary people like you and me can also help a lot. An act of kindness can bring a smile to a person’s face even if only for a moment. Give away your money. Choose charity that has meaning for you. For example, if you want to help hungry children, you can try to find an international organization that provides food for those in poor areas. 17 Share your knowledge. If a friend needs skills in a certain area, offer your advice. Perhaps she is struggling to set up a computer, and you know how to do that. Offer whatever ability you have, but always remember to be polite. Help a stranger. Your small actions can brighten the day of others. Hold the door for someone whose hands are full. 18 Give your seat on the bus to an old man. The key is expecting nothing in return for your acts of kindness. 19 Show the people close to you how much you care about them. Tell them they mean a lot to you. Make a beautiful gift for a friend. Take your husband to his favourite fun place if he has had a hard week. Tell your children how much they mean to you. Be grateful to others. 20 Thank the waiter. Do you have a very good neighbour who is always there when you need her? Tell her how much you appreciate her being in your life. A.That is not all the truth. B.Care about those you know. C.Help the blind cross the street. D.You should know what love means. E.Every cent you give away will mean a lot. F.Have you had good service in a restaurant? G.You should learn to express gratitude to others. 第二部分 语言运用(共二节, 满分30分) 第一节 完形填空(共15小题;每小题1分, 共15分) I was out in my fields, spade in hand, planting trees this morning. She was hugging a photograph of her father with her fingers running around his face. “Daddy”, she said softly, “Why won't you come back?” Instead of gradually adjusting to her father's death, Desiree refused to accept it “Daddy will be home soon,” she'd tell her mother. “He's at work.” When she played with her toy telephone, she pretended she was chatting with her father “I miss you, Daddy,” she'd say. “When will you come back?” Desiree's situation made her mother worried. Days later, it was Ken's birthday. “How will I send him a card?” Desiree asked her mother “How about if we tie a litter to a balloon.” her mother said, “and send it up to heaven?” Desiree's eyes immediately lit up. Her mother took her to a store and Desiree picked out a balloon with HAPPY BIRTHDAY above a drawing of The Little Mermaid (美人鱼). Desire and her father had often watched it. The child's eyes shone as they were on the way to Ken's grave. Then Desiree dictated (口述) a letter to her Dad. “Daddy, Happy birthday, I love you and miss you,” she rattled off (快速说). “I hope you get this and can write to me on my birthday in January.” Her mother wrote the message and their address on a small piece of paper, which was then wrapped in plastic and tied to the end of the string on the balloon. Finally, Desiree let fly the balloon. For almost an hour, they watched the shining spot of silver grow smaller and smaller till disappear. “Now Dad's going to write back to me,” Desiree said confidently. A.China Honors a Nuclear Power Expert B.Peng Shilu Built Nuclear Submarines C.China Lost a Famous Nuclear Expert D.A Nuclear Hero Devoted Himself to Helping His Country 【答案】4.B 5.C 6.A 7.D 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。 根据第一段中“Despite being one of the founding members of China’s nuclear power industry, Peng described himself as playing a tiny role in the task. (尽管彭是中国核电工业的奠基人之一,但他说自己在这项任务中发挥的作用很小)”可推知,彭士禄院士是一个非常谦虚的人。故选B项。 5.词句猜测题。根据画线部分的上文“Peng was selected to study chemical machinery (机械) in the Soviet Union. In 1956, when he was about to graduate, he faced a turning point in his life. (彭被选派到苏联学习化学机械。1956年,当他即将毕业时,他面临着人生的转折点)”和下文“the atomic energy major (原子能专业)”可知,彭面临的转折点是放弃自己原来的专业,改学原子能专业,turn to表示“转向”,与画线部分意义一致。故选C项。 6.推理判断题。通读全文可知,第一段引出文章的主题,再结合第二段中“Peng was born in 1925 into a family of heroes. (彭于1925年出生在一个英雄家庭)”、“In 1956, when he was about to graduate, he faced a turning point in his life. (1956年,当他即将毕业时,他面临着人生的转折点)”、第三段中“In 1958, China started to independently develop its own nuclear submarines, and Peng was appointed to take charge of the research and design of the nuclear propulsion system. In the 1980s, China decided to build a commercial nuclear power plant. (1958年,中国开始独立研制自己的核潜艇,彭被任命负责核动力推进系统的研究和设计。在20世纪80年代,中国决定建造一座商业核电站)”、第四段中“In 1994, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (1994年他当选为中国工程院院士)”和最后一段中“Peng passed away in Beijing on March 22, 2021 (彭于2021年3月22日在北京去世)”可知,文章按照时间顺序讲述彭士禄院士的生平。故选A项。 7. 通读全文,尤其是第一段中“In fact, he held leading positions in most of China’s early nuclear power projects, from the first-generation nuclear submarines to the establishment of Dayawan and Qinshan nuclear power stations. (事实上,从第一代核潜艇到大亚湾和秦山核电站的建设,他在中国早期的大部分核电项目中都担任领导职务)”和最后一段中“The Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee awarded the title “Role Model of the Times” to Peng for his contributions. (中共中央宣传部授予他“时代楷模”称号,以表彰他的贡献)”可知,文章讲述了中国著名的核动力专家彭士禄的事迹,尤其体现了彭士禄为祖国发展所做的贡献。因此,D项“一位核英雄致力于帮助他的国家”最契合彭士禄的人物事迹和贡献,适合作为文章标题。故选D项。 C Jenifer Mauer has needed more willpower than the typical college student to pursue her goal of earning a nursing degree. A.Reduce. B.Benefit. C.Increase. D.Depress. 根据文章第五段“When you forget entire experiences, he says, that’s “a red flag that something more serious may be involved”. Forgetting how to operate a familiar object like a microwave oven, or forgetting how to drive to the house of a friend you’ve visited many times before can also be signs of something going wrong.”(他说,当你忘记整个经历时,这是“一个危险信号,可能涉及到更严重的事情”。 故选A项。 13. 根据文章倒数第二段“Daffner suggests going to your doctor to check on medications, health problems and other issues that could be affecting memory.”(Daffner 建议去看医生,检查药物、健康问题和其他可能影响记忆的问题。) 根据文章最后一段“In other words, keep your brain busy and working. And also get physically active, ”(换句话说,让你的大脑忙碌起来。 根据最后一段中““Read books, go to movies, take on new hobbies or activities that force one to think in novel ways.” he says. In other words, keep your brain busy and working. And also get physically active, because exercise is a widely known to boost the brain.”(读书、看电影、培养新的爱好或活动,这些都能促使你以新颖的方式思考。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) How to Make the World a Better Place When you think about people who have made the world a better place, you probably think of famous scientists or great leaders. 16 Ordinary people like you and me can also help a lot. Every day since they'd flew the balloon, Desiree had asked her mother, “Do you think Daddy has my balloon yet?” Several weeks passed, and she stopped asking. Curious, he approached to find a silver balloon, with a piece of paper at the end of the string, wrapped in plastic. Taking it home, Wade read the touching lines to his wife Donna. She was deeply moved. With tears in her eyes, Donna decided to help Desiree. The couple went to buy a birthday card and a book of The Little Mermaid, and then she began to write a letter to Desiree. Paragraph 2 Desiree’s fifth birthday came and later on the afternoon, a package arrived. Looking at the unfamiliar return address, Desiree’s mother was confused. Suddenly an idea struck her: the balloon! She opened the parcel and found a card with “For a Dear Daughter”. Her heart raced. She rushed to Desiree’s room and showed her the letter. “It’s from Daddy!” Desiree jumped with joy, asking her mother to read it for her. “Happy birthday, my little angel!” Her mother began. A big tear began to trickle down Desiree’s cheek. 如:at the end of,decide to do sth.,rush to,trickle down等高级词汇;Taking it home和Looking at the unfamiliar return address非谓语动词短语,with a piece of paper at the end of the string和With tears in her eyes是with复合结构等高级句式。
