Broken Hill was recently awarded one of Australia’s rare National Heritage (遗产) listings, but is that reason enough to make the journey?
Broken Hill, in Western New South Wales, is hardly up there as a tourist attraction of international reputation (名声). It’s miles from anywhere, boiling hot and lacks the more attractive elements that often make a place popular — for example, high-end restaurants, beautiful beaches, great accommodation (膳宿). But Broken Hill’s reputation is growing with its recent National Heritage Listing Award.
We asked Broken Hill mayor to tell us what makes Broken Hill so great. These are some reasons he gave us to visit.
Perfect light
Broken Hill offers breathtaking scenery to discover and explore. The lively colours and perfect light have attracted film-makers and artists here for decades. From the wonders of the day, comes an amazing light show at night.
The locals
We are always happy to greet people from “away”. In fact, we love it when people come to town to visit. We are friendly people who make you feel welcome. And we are proud of our city.
The Palace Hotel
The home of Priscilla Queen of the Desert and just a great Broken Hill iconic pub. You can star in your own movie in the centre of town. It is a world-famous landmark and a good water hole for those nice warm days.
The living desert and sculptures
Located 9 km from the city, Broken Hill features 12 sandstone sculptures by artists from around the world as well as local artist Badger Bates. It displays the breathtaking beauty of the real outback (内地).
21. Which of the following factor is making Broken Hill better known to the world?
A. Its friendly local people. B. Its Palace Hotel.
C Its National Heritage Listing Award. D. Its sandstone sculptures.
22. Which of the following topics of Broken Hill are mentioned in the passage?
A. Traditional food and friendly locals.
B. Pleasant climate and perfect light.
C. Beautiful beaches and lively sculptures.

A. To encourage readers to pay a visit to Broken Hill.
B. To explain the causes of awarding Broken Hill.
C. To list the reasons for Broken Hill’s greatness.
D. To express the writer’s pride for Broken Hill’s award.

Mom died just before the Christmas season the year before, after a short battle with cancer. At the age of seventy-two, she had been well prepared for her death, but I was not.
Of both French and Indian background, she had a gentle, soft touch. All her life, Mom was there for me; although now a grown woman, I still needed my senior parent for advice and comfort. We were the best of friends, and over the years, we shared, laughed and cried together.
I often found myself wearing her red sweater, which had been Mom’s favourite, and it was faded and worn from years of use. To cope with my grief, I would imagine my mom wearing the red sweater and reaching out to comfort me. Her warm hands, worn and shrivelled (干枯) from age and work, had cared for a large family, and brought life to plants and flowers.
Mom lost both her cultures when she married my father, a white man, and moved from her island to live on his. When she arrived in isolated and rural Cardigan at the age of eighteen, she began to learn English. Sadly, her knowledge of both French and her native Chinook began to fade away.
One of my favourite memories are the native powwws (帕瓦仪式) we attended on Panmure Island. FirstNations people from all over North America travelled there to participate in the powwows. It was an opportunity forMom to mingle with the First Nations people, wear her native shirt, dance in the sacred circle and socialize. She loved going to those powwows and I remember her proudly telling an elder once, “I’m Indian, too.” Although she had moved into the white man’s world when she married, she never lost her Chinook heritage of strong native spirituality, deep respect for the land, and love for the outdoors— all of which she passed on to me and my eight brothers and sisters.
Now, her image travels with me when I feel grief and pain. She always wears the red sweater and for an instant, our hands join. Death has not separated us.
24. Why did I keep Mom’s red sweater?
A. It was a gift from my mom as my best friend.
B. It was Mom’s favourite despite its overuse.
C. It witnessed my growth from a girl to a woman.
D. It held many memories and offered me comfort.
25. Why did Mom love to attend the native powwow?
A. She lost her culture after she married my father.
B. She was eager to be identified with her ancient roots.
C. She felt isolated and wanted to make friends there.
D. She was passionate about outdoor activities.
26. Which of the following best describes Mom?
A. Quiet and considerate. B. Strict and determined.
C. Talkative and humorous. D. Hardworking and caring.
27. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Valuable Heritage B. Silenced Cultural Identity
C. The Red Sweater D. Journey to the Roots
C
We live in a world of plastic. Shopping bags, drink bottles, your toothbrush and even your clothes are among the everyday items made from plastic. But plastic isn’t fantastic, and neither is the current state of our environment.
Humans have been producing plastic on a large scale since 1950. We produce hundreds of millions of tonnes of plastic every year and production is only increasing. Unfortunately, most of it is used only once and then thrown away. Only a small part of plastic is recycled. The majority ends up in our oceans.
A Plastic Ocean is a documentary film directed by the Australian journalist Craig Leeson. It dives into and investigates the terrible influence that plastic has caused to our environment, especially our ocean life. What starts off as an adventure to film the blue whale, the largest animal on the planet, leads to the shocking discovery of a thick layer of plastic floating in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The film sends the message that our actions and choices can severely impact the planet.
Plastic is so widely used because it is durable and cheap. Unfortunately, this durability is the same quality that makes it so detrimental to the environment. Most plastics do not break down chemically. Instead, they break into smaller and smaller pieces that can persist in the environment for an extensive period of time.
Because it is so affordable, developing countries use plastics extensively and much of the rubbish is washed into the ocean when it rains.
When smaller pieces of plastic are eaten by animals in the sea, toxins (毒素) are released and become stored in their tissue. These toxins accumulate up the food chain and can eventually end up on our dinner tables. The consumption of the polluted seafood can cause many health problems including cancer, immune system problems, and even childhood developmental issues. Society’s huge appetite for plastic is literally poisoning us.
28. How long have we used plastic extensively?
A. More than 40 years. B. More than 50 years.
C. More than 60 years. D. More than 70 years.
29. Why did Craig Leeson direct A Plastic Ocean?
A. To introduce the ocean life. B. To show the harm of plastic.
C. To describe the beauty of the ocean. D. To indicate the common use of plastic.
30. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Similar. B. Difficult. C. harmful. D. Important.
31. Which proverb can best express the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. You get what you pay for. B. There is no smoke without fire.
C Everything happens for a reason. D. What goes around comes around.
D
When it comes to reading, people have different preferences. Some people will choose paper books because they’re easy to borrow and share. Others will go for e-readers, perhaps on a phone, because they’re convenient. But which is the more environment-friendly choice?
Digital reading(数字阅读)is on the rise, now making up about 15% of the total US book market. However, traditional print publishing is still by far the most popular type — and it comes with a high carbon footprint(碳足迹). According to a 2023 report from Words Rated, print book publishing is the third biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions, and 32 million trees are cut down each year in the US to make paper for books. Then there’s the problem of printing and transport, not to mention the many unsold books that are destroyed.
Digital reading seems to have a great advantage over print because it is paperless, so it saves trees and transport. Moreover, technology companies that make e-readers, such as Amazon, offer recycling programs for old devices(设备). But digital devices also come with a large carbon footprint, mainly at the production stage. Their cases are made from plastic that comes from fossil fuels, and the minerals in their batteries require a lot of resources to be mined.
So back to the earlier question: which way of reading is more environmentally friendly? “It’s not cut and dried,” said Mike Berners-Lee, a professor at Lancaster Environment Centre in the United Kingdom. “If you buy an e-reader and you read lots of books on it, then it’s the lowest carbon thing to do. But if you buy it, read a couple of books, and find that you prefer paper books, then it’s the worst of all worlds.” Yet, Berners-Lee said that reading is still, relatively speaking, an environmental-friendly activity.
32. What does the report show?
A. Printed books have a poor sales record in the US.
B. Print publishing is not friendly to the environment.
C. Digital reading is more popular than paper reading.
D. Printing books costs more than producing e-readers.
33. Which aspect of digital devices has the largest impact on the environment?
A. Its transportation B. Its waste management.
C. Its production process. D. Its recycling programs.
34. According to the text, it is better to choose digital reading if you______.
A. read a lot B. hardly take notes
C enjoy reading at night D. only read books out of need
35. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Why Should We Choose Digital Reading?
B. How Does Print Publishing Affect the Environment?
C. Will Traditional Print Reading Disappear in the Future?
D. Which is Better for the Environment, Paper Books or E-readers?

Sandy and Jane came to see the jobo tree on the hilltop again. Jobos were their favorite fruit, but the tree belonged to a lady who lived in the house by the hill. They heard she was difficult, but that sometimes she would give fruit in return for an errand(差使)
The girls finally gathered their courage to knock on her door. An elderly woman with a fierce look answered, staring down at the girls. “We heard …”said Sandy, her voice shaky, “that you give jobos in payment for running an errand.”
The lady raised one eyebrow then went into the kitchen and took two baskets. She pushed them into the girls’ hands.“Go fill these with jobos, and come right back.”
The girls raced up the hill to the tree and filled the baskets with the ripest jobos. Back at the house, the lady filled a bag with rice and handed it to Sandy. “Take this bag and one basket of jobos to the Brown family. And ask them for the payment,” the lady added with a tight smile.“If you return without the payment, you won’t get the fruit.”
The girls struggled all the way with the bag and the basket. When they were there, Mrs. Brown answered the door. Inside on the floor were three little children, each painting something on papers.
Mr. Brown was lying sick in bed.Times were hard.
The girls handed her the food.“This is from the lady with the jobo tree, ” said Sandy.
“She asked for the payment, too.”Jane said awkwardly.
“The payment! The payment!” The children repeated, waving the paper in their hands happily.
Sandy and Jane looked at each other strangely. With a smile, Mrs. Brown handed Sandy a large sealed(密封的)envelope so full that it was almost starting to break open. The girls said goodbye and left quickly. “I wonder,” Sandy murmured, “whether Mrs. Brown can afford to pay for that food.”

W: Jason, do you think we should get mental health days off from school?
M: Yes, Jenny, sometimes we need to stay home and have a good rest after hard school work. I want days when I need soft music to make me feel relaxed. I also enjoy playing around.
W: But you can do those things after school or on the weekend.
M: You know, I have to do schoolwork and read books as well.
W: Well, I don’t think schools should give students days off for their mental health.
M: Why? Having too many days off can affect our study and even our life. And many students’ parents, like mine, have to go to work. If students get too many days off, they might be at home alone too much. This could make some students mental health issues worse.
M: But some students have serious mental health challenges. How can they get help?

M: Yes. On Tuesday afternoon, an air traffic controller in Florida got an emergency radio call. Someone taking the flight told him that he didn’t know how to fly the airplane.

M: Because the pilot of the airplane wasn’t well.

M: Luckily that didn’t happen. It was really a miracle.
W: Surely, it was. That man was really brave. He saved all the lives on the plane.

When she was nine months old, she started to learn painting by herself. By the age of 1 year and 10 months, her first painting was in London art gallery. She had her first solo exhibition in Manhattan when she was just 4 years old. The show was called the prodigy of colors. Alita’s exhibition in Manhattan was displayed for 3 weeks straight. All her 24 artworks were sold there within a week. The price was ranging from 4,000 dollars to 10,000 dollars. Alita’s work gained popularity and fame, and her artworks began appearing in big galleries all over the world. Critics call her young Picasso, and her painting style is frequently compared with Jackson Pollock. The greatest abstract artist of all time, global child Prodigy awards, is the world’s first and only awards ceremony to recognize unique and talented children. Alita Andre won the award in 2020.

The Palace Hotel
The home of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and just a great Broken Hill iconic pub.

D 25. B 26. D 27. C
根据文章第三段“I often found myself wearing her red sweater, which had been Mom’s favourite, and it was faded and worn from years of use. To cope with my grief, I would imagine my mom wearing the red sweater and reaching out to comfort me.(我常常发现自己穿着她那件红色的毛衣,那曾是母亲的最爱,由于多年的穿着,毛衣已经褪色且有些破旧了。为了缓解自己的悲痛,我会想象母亲穿着那件红色毛衣,伸出手来安慰我。)”可知,作者经常穿着妈妈最喜欢的这件红色毛衣,这件毛衣因为穿了多年已经褪色且破旧了。为了应对自己的悲痛,作者会想象妈妈穿着这件红色毛衣,伸出手来安慰自己。这表明这件红色毛衣承载着作者对妈妈的回忆,并且能够给作者带来安慰。故选D。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第五段“One of my favourite memories are the native powwws(帕瓦仪式) we attended on Panmure Island. First Nations people from all over North America travelled there to participate in the powwows. It was an opportunity for Mom to mingle with the First Nations people, wear her native shirt, dance in the sacred circle and socialize. She loved going to those powwows and I remember her proudly telling an elder once, “I’m Indian, too.” Although she had moved into the white man’s world when she married, she never lost her Chinook heritage of strong native spirituality, deep respect for the land, and love for the outdoors— all of which she passed on to me and my eight brothers and sisters.(我最美好的回忆之一,是我们一起参加在潘穆尔岛举行的原住民帕瓦仪式。
根据文章第二段“All her life, Mom was there for me; although now a grown woman, I still needed my senior parent for advice and comfort. We were the best of friends, and over the years, we shared, laughed and cried together.(在她的一生中,母亲一直陪伴着我;尽管我现在已经长大成人,但我依然需要这位长辈给我提供建议和安慰。我们是最要好的朋友,这些年来,我们一起分享生活,一起欢笑,一起哭泣。)”可知,妈妈一生都陪伴着作者,作者即使长大成人也需要妈妈的建议和安慰,她们一起分享生活、欢笑和哭泣,这体现了妈妈对作者的关心。根据文章第三段“Her warm hands, worn and shrivelled(干枯) from age and work, had cared for a large family, and brought life to plants and flowers.(她那温暖的双手,因岁月和劳作而变得粗糙、干枯,曾经照顾过一大家子人,还让各种植物和花卉焕发生机。)”
C. Everything happens for a reason. D. What goes around comes around.
D 29. B 30. C 31. D
根据第二段“Humans have been producing plastic on a large scale since 1950. (自1950年以来,人类一直在大规模生产塑料。)”可知,人类自1950年以来就开始大规模生产塑料。因此,我们广泛使用塑料已有70多年。故选D项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“A Plastic Ocean is a documentary film directed by the Australian journalist Craig Leeson. It dives into and investigates the terrible influence that plastic has caused to our environment, especially our ocean life. (《塑料海洋》是一部由澳大利亚记者Craig Leeson执导的纪录片。它深入调查了塑料对我们环境,尤其是海洋生物造成的可怕影响。)”可知,Craig Leeson执导《塑料海洋》这部纪录片是为了展示塑料对环境的危害。故选B项。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后的“Most plastics do not break down chemically. Instead, they break into smaller and smaller pieces that can persist in the environment for an extensive period of time. (大多数塑料不会发生化学分解。相反,它们会分解成越来越小的碎片,这些碎片可以在环境中长期存在。)”可知,塑料不会分解,而是会分解成更小的碎片,长期存在于环境中,这对环境是有害的。因此,划线词“detrimental”意为“有害的”。故选C项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段 “When smaller pieces of plastic are eaten by animals in the sea, toxins (毒素) are released and become stored in their tissue. These toxins accumulate up the food chain and can eventually end up on our dinner tables. The consumption of the polluted seafood can cause many health problems including cancer, immune system problems, and even childhood developmental issues. Society’s huge appetite for plastic is literally poisoning us. (当海洋中的动物吃掉较小的塑料碎片时,毒素会被释放出来并储存在它们的组织中。这些毒素会在食物链中积累,最终可能出现在我们的餐桌上。食用受污染的海鲜会导致许多健康问题,包括癌症、免疫系统问题,甚至儿童发育问题。社会对塑料的巨大需求实际上正在毒害我们。)”可知,最后一段主要讲述了塑料污染如何通过食物链最终影响到人类健康,即“恶有恶报”或“因果循环”的道理。因此,D项“What goes around comes around. (善有善报,恶有恶报;因果循环。)”最能表达最后一段的主旨。故选D项。
C. enjoy reading at night D. only read books out of need
35. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Why Should We Choose Digital Reading?
B. How Does Print Publishing Affect the Environment?
C. Will Traditional Print Reading Disappear in the Future?
D. Which is Better for the Environment, Paper Books or E-readers?
B 33. C 34. A 35. D

根据文章第三段“:But digital devices also come with a large carbon footprint, mainly at the production stage.(但数字设备也伴随着巨大的碳足迹,主要集中在生产阶段)”可知,数字设备对环境影响最大的是其生产过程。
根据文章最后一段“If you buy an e-reader and you read lots of books on it, then it’s the lowest carbon thing to do.(如果你买了一个电子阅读器并在上面阅读很多书,那么这是最低碳的做法)”可知,如果你经常阅读,选择电子阅读器是更环保的,因此选项A“读很多书”是正确的。故选A。
通读全文,并根据文章第一段“When it comes to reading, people have different preferences. Some people will choose paper books because they’re easy to borrow and share. Others will go for e-readers, perhaps on a phone, because they’re convenient. But which is the more environment-friendly choice?(说到阅读,人们有不同的偏好。有些人会选择纸质书,因为它们很容易借阅和分享。还有一些人会选择电子阅读器,也许是在手机上,因为它们很方便。但哪个是更环保的选择?)”可知,文章围绕纸质书和电子书哪个更环保的问题展开论述,所以最适合的标题是“纸质书还是电子阅读器,哪个对环境更好”。故选D。

The girls finally gathered their courage to knock on her door. An elderly woman with a fierce look answered, staring down at the girls. “We heard …”said Sandy, her voice shaky, “that you give jobos in payment for running an errand.”
The lady raised one eyebrow, then went into the kitchen and took two baskets.
