During my early years, I focused on eye-catching landscape photography. I spent time in the Himalayas, Patagonia and Tasmania and returned with pictures of breathtaking beauty which I thought were “awesome”. But a one-month camping trip to the Menindee lakes along Darling-Baaka in Australia shifted my perspective; Photography is more than taking photos.
As I became increasingly familiar with the place, I learned that human activities led to widespread deforestation and drought in the area, resulting in many dead trees. Driving across the region, I recalled that Sydney was blanketed by smoke for months on end as bushfires swept through the east coast. Fortunately, the La Niña weather cycle reached Australia, increasing rainfall and causing the continent’s short-lived rivers to spring back to life. Yet, the image of bushfires stayed with me, and I felt driven to do something. That was when the photo Blaze came into being.
I spoke to the local authority, explaining that I hoped to create a “burning” tree as a beacon (灯塔) to draw people’s attention to deforestation. They showed great interest because fire is an integral part of the Australian farming and the natives.
I connected a few of the gas canisters (罐) generally used for barbecues to flexible gas lines called “slinkies”, which could be wired up the back of the tree, away from the tree and out of sight of the public. These produced an outline of flames when I lit them, as if the tree were on fire. It was lit for 15 seconds while I got the shot, and fire-fighting equipment was prepared. Even though the tree was dead, it was still a vital habitat. But the gas flames did no damage and the insects that lived inside were unharmed.
I love that when people look at the photo, they can concretize the delicacy of our natural world while appreciating Blaze.
24. What is the author’s new perception of photography?
A. It involves professional skills. B. It should carry deep meanings.
C. It requires high-end equipment. D. It should produce beautiful pictures.
25. What inspired the author to create Blaze?
A. Local environmental changes. B. Traditional Australian farming.
C. Scenery of the Menindee lakes. D. Support from the local authority.
26. Which of the following images best illustrates the photo Blaze?
A. B. C. D.
27. What is the photo Blaze intended to be?
A. A means of enhancing artistic taste. B. A strategy to beautify the landscape.
C. A call to raise public awareness. D. A window to showcase local culture.

Planetary geoarchaeology (地质考古学), the study of how cultural and natural processes on Earth’s moon, on Mars, and throughout the solar system may be changing, preserving, or erasing the material record of space exploration, has been proposed by two researchers from the Kansas Geological Survey at the University of Kansas and their colleagues as a new scientific subfield.
“Until recently, we might consider the material left behind during the space race of the mid-20th century as relatively safe, "said Justin Holcomb, researcher at the Kansas Geological Survey. “However, the material record that currently exists on the moon is rapidly becoming at risk of being destroyed if proper attention isn’t paid during the new space era.”
Applying geoarchaeological tools and methods to the movement of people into space and the solar system is a natural extension of the study of human migration on Earth, the focus of the ODYSSEY Archaeological Research Program directed by Holcomb’s co-author, Rolfe Mandel.
How planetary geoarchaeologists will determine whether an item is worth preserving is an open question. “We feel that all material currently existing on extraterrestrial (地球外的) surfaces is space heritage and worthy of protection, ”Holcomb said. “However, some sites, such as the very first footprints on the moon represent the material footprint of a long history of migration. ”Beyond those“firsts”, making decisions on a case-by-case basis will be necessary to sort through the tens of thousands of pieces of debris (残骸) now in orbit or dropped across the surfaces of the moon and Mars, which many people refer to as “trash” but Holcomb and his colleagues see as heritage.
Holcomb thinks geoarchaeologists ought to be a part of upcoming NASA missions to ensure the security and preservation of space history. As for being part of a space mission himself? “I’ll leave that to other geoarchaeologists,” Holcomb said. “There’s plenty to do down here, but I do hope to see an archaeologist in space before it’s all over.”
28. Why has planetary geoarchaeology been proposed?
A. To protect space heritage. B. To study the solar system.
C. To resist space exploration. D. To found a scientific field.
29. What do we know about the material record of space?
A. It threatens the movement of people into space.
B. It is the main focus of the ODYSSEY Program.
C. It shows the whole process of human migration.
D. It is not as safe as expected in the new space era.
30. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The methods of classifying space trash. B. The first footprints on the moon and Mars.
C. The question of planetary geoarchaeologists. D. The discussion on identifying space heritage.
31. What does Holcomb suggest other geoarchaeologists do?
A. Learn from scientists like him. B. Lead upcoming NASA missions.
C. Participate in space exploration. D. Ensure the security of astronauts.
D
Everybody loves a fat pay rise. Yet pleasure at your own can vanish if you learn that a colleague has been given a bigger one. Indeed, if he has a reputation for slacking(懈怠的), you might even be outraged. Such behaviour is regarded as “all too human,” with the underlying assumption that other animals would not be capable of this finely developed sense of grievance(不满). But a study by Sarah Brosnan and Frans de Waal of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, which has just been published in Nature, suggests that it is all too monkey, as well.
The researchers studied the behaviour of female brown capuchin monkeys. They look cute. They are good-natured, co-operative creatures, and they share their food readily. Above all, like their female human counterparts, they tend to pay much closer attention to the value of “goods and services” than males.
Such characteristics make them perfect candidates for Dr. Brosnan’s and Dr. de Waal’s study. The researchers spent two years teaching their monkeys to exchange tokens for food. Normally the monkeys were happy enough to exchange pieces of rock for slices of cucumber. However, when two monkeys were placed in separate but adjoining chambers, so that each could observe what the other was getting in return for its rock, their behaviour became markedly different.
In the world of capuchins, grapes are luxury goods (and much preferable to cucumbers). So when one monkey was handed a grape in exchange for her token, the second was reluctant to hand hers over for a mere piece of cucumber. And if one received a grape without having to provide her token in exchange at all, the other either tossed her own token at the researcher or out of the chamber, or refused to accept the slice of cucumber. Indeed, the mere presence of a grape in the other chamber (without an actual monkey to eat it) was enough to induce resentment in a female capuchin.
The researchers suggest that capuchin monkeys, like humans, are guided by social emotions. In the wild, they are a co-operative, group-living species. Such co-operation is likely to be stable only when each animal feels it is not being cheated. Feelings of righteous indignation(愤慨), it seems, are not the preserve of people alone. Refusing a lesser reward completely makes these feelings abundantly clear to other members of the group. However, whether such a sense of fairness evolved independently in capuchins and humans, or whether it stems from the common ancestor that the species had 35 million years ago, is, as yet, an unanswered question.
32. In the opening paragraph, the author introduces his topic by ___________.
A. making a conclusion B. justifying an assumption
C. explaining a phenomenon D. making a comparison
33. The statement “it is all too monkey” (Last line, Paragraph 1) implies that __________.
A. monkeys are also outraged by slack rivals
B. feeling angry about unfairness is also monkeys’ nature
C. monkeys, like humans, tend to be jealous of each other
D. no animals other than monkeys can develop such emotions
34. Dr. Brosnan and Dr. De Waal have eventually found in their study that the monkeys _________.
A. prefer grapes to cucumbers
B. can be taught to exchange things
C. will not be co-operation if feeling cheated
D. are unhappy when separated from others
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Monkeys can be trained to develop social emotions.
B. Human indignation evolved from an uncertain source.
C. Animals usually show their feelings openly as humans do.
D. Cooperation among monkeys remains stable only in the wild.

I’d always been told to take care of my older brother, Brian, who was born weak and small. I’d often tie his shoes or prepare another glass of water for him. My mom saw my larger size and strong body as a sign that I was to be a kind of guardian angel (守护天使) for Brian. However, that was not the case.
One day our school sponsored a pumpkin-carving contest. First prize was $100, and I knew just how I would spend it. There was a brand-new game I was dying to own. So I decided the first place bonus definitely had to land in my pocket.
When I had to carve the perfect pumpkin I’d picked out, it dawned on me that with my big clumsy fingers I’d surely screw it up (搞砸). I thought of Brian’s smaller, delicate hands and knew he was the man for the job. I immediately begged Brian. Unexpectedly, he asked for a cut. That was fifty-fifty. Quickly doing the math in my head, I figured out even if I split (分摊) the first prize, I’d still have enough cash for the game. So I gave in to Brian’s demands. With skillful hands Brian carved the perfect face, and now we had the best pumpkin ever.
Then the unexpected happened: We came in second. Unfortunately, second prize was only $50, and I needed every penny of that to buy the game. The day of the awards ceremony, the principal handed over the money to me because Brian was home, sick with cold.
If he really wanted to win, he would have been here today, I thought to myself, justifying stealing the cash from under poor Brian’s runny nose. With hardly a thought, I ran to the store and bought my dream game. That night when Brian asked if we had won, I denied, afraid to look into his eyes.
The whole thing was never mentioned again until the day when Brian was packing for college. I played my usual role in helping him pack when I came across an old album filled with photos he had taken as the school photographer.

【21题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章图片下第一段“With this tour, you’ll have half a day of adventure activities in the desert.(参加这次旅行,您将有半天的时间在沙漠中进行冒险活动)”及第二段“You’ll start your tour by driving to a scenic spot on the top of a tall sand dune (沙丘) for a chance to take photos of the area.(您将开车前往一个高沙丘顶部的景点来开始你的旅程,有机会在该地区拍照)”可知,在此活动中,参与者可以用相机捕捉令人惊叹的沙漠景观。故选D。
【22题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章Select time中US$ 55并结合最后一段“Tours starting after noon include a BBQ dinner with sweets and fruits, which costs an additional US$ 45/person only.(中午之后开始的旅游包括有糖果和水果的烧烤晚餐,每人只需额外支付45美元)”可知,下午2点的旅程要每个人另外加45美元,即,一共需要花费(55+45)*4=400美元。故选D。
【23题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章标题“Guided Desert Adventure(沙漠探险指南)”可知,这是一个探险活动,而非表演;根据文章图片下第二段“You’ll start your tour by driving to a scenic spot on the top of a tall sand dune (沙丘) for a chance to take photos of the area. On top of a sand dune, you’ll have the chance to slide down the side by sandboarding. From here, you’ll get ready for hitting some dunes in a four-wheel drive vehicle. Next, you’ll hop on a quad bike and have time to drive around the desert in the open air. B
【答案】24. B 25. A 26. D 27. C
根据第一段“But a one-month camping trip to the Menindee lakes along Darling-Baaka in Australia shifted my perspective; Photography is more than taking photos.(但一次在澳大利亚达令-巴阿克地区梅尼德里湖的为期一个月的露营之旅改变了我的看法;摄影不仅仅是拍摄照片)”可知,作者新的认知是摄影应具有深刻含义,故选B。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“As I became increasingly familiar with the place, I learned that human activities led to widespread deforestation and drought in the area, resulting in many dead trees. Driving across the region, I recalled that Sydney was blanketed by smoke for months on end as bushfires swept through the east coast.(随着我对这个地方的了解越来越深入,我了解到人类活动导致了该地区大面积的森林砍伐和干旱,致使许多树木死亡。驾车穿越这片区域时,我回想起悉尼曾连续数月被浓烟笼罩,因为丛林大火席卷了东海岸)”和“Yet, the image of bushfires stayed with me, and I felt driven to do something. That was when the photo Blaze came into being.(然而,森林大火的画面一直萦绕在我的脑海里,我觉得有必要做点什么。就在那时,Blaze应运而生)”可知,促使作者创作Blaze这部作品的原因是当地环境的变化。故选A。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“I connected a few of the gas canisters (罐) generally used for barbecues to flexible gas lines called “slinkies”, which could be wired up the back of the tree, away from the tree and out of sight of the public. These produced an outline of flames when I lit them, as if the tree were on fire.(我将一些通常用于烧烤的气罐连接到了被称为“滑线”的柔性输气管上。这些滑线可以沿着树的背面铺设,远离树木并隐藏在公众视线之外。当我点燃它们时,会产生火焰的轮廓,仿佛这棵树真的着火了)”可知,照片Blaze呈现的是一棵树被火焰轮廓包围,看起来仿佛树着火了的画面,故选D。
【27题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“I spoke to the local authority, explaining that I hoped to create a “burning” tree as a beacon (灯塔) to draw people’s attention to deforestation.(我与当地政府部门进行了沟通,说明了我的想法,即希望打造一棵“燃烧”的树,以此作为警示标志,引起人们对森林砍伐问题的关注)”可知,作者创作Blaze是为了唤起公众意识,故选C。
C
A Learn from scientists like him. B. Lead upcoming NASA missions.
C. Participate in space exploration. D. Ensure the security of astronauts.
【答案】28. A 29. D 30. D 31. C
根据第二段最后Justin Holcomb所说的“However, the material record that currently exists on the moon is rapidly becoming at risk of being destroyed if proper attention isn’t paid during the new space era. (然而,如果在新的太空时代没有给予足够的关注,目前月球上现存的物质记录正迅速面临被破坏的风险。)”以及第三段“Applying geoarchaeological tools and methods to the movement of people into space and the solar system is a natural extension of the study of human migration on Earth, the focus of the ODYSSEY Archaeological Research Program directed by Holcomb’s co-author, Rolfe Mandel. (将地质考古学的工具和方法应用于人类进入太空和太阳系的活动,是对地球上人类迁徙研究的自然延伸,这也是由霍尔科姆的合著者罗尔夫・曼德尔指导的奥德赛考古研究项目的重点。)”可知,当前月球上的物质记录在新太空时代面临被破坏的风险,而行星地质考古学旨在通过应用地质考古工具和方法来保护这些太空遗产,所以行星地质考古学被提出是为了保护太空遗产。故选A项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段““Until recently, we might consider the material left behind during the space race of the mid-20th century as relatively safe, "said Justin Holcomb, researcher at the Kansas Geological Survey. “However, the material record that currently exists on the moon is rapidly becoming at risk of being destroyed if proper attention isn’t paid during the new space era.” (堪萨斯地质调查局的研究员贾斯汀・霍尔科姆说:“直到最近,我们或许还认为20世纪中叶太空竞赛期间留下的物质相对安全。然而,如果在新的太空时代没有给予足够关注,目前月球上现存的物质记录正迅速面临被破坏的风险。”)”可知,在新的太空时代,原本被认为相对安全的月球上的物质记录正迅速面临被破坏的风险,即它不像以前认为的那样安全。故选D项。

Normally, the monkeys were happy enough to exchange pieces of rock for slices of cucumber.
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. C 35. B

【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Such co-operation is likely to be stable only when each animal feels it is not being cheated.(这种合作只有在每一只猴子都感觉它没有被欺骗的情况下才可能保持稳定)”可知,该研究发现,如果猴子感觉被欺骗,就不会合作。故选C项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“However, whether such a sense of fairness evolved independently in capuchins and humans, or whether it stems from the common ancestor that the species had 35 million years ago, is, as yet, an unanswered question.(然而,到底这样的公平意识是人类和卷尾猴各自形成的,还是因为二者在3500万年前有一个共同的祖先造成的,目前还没有答案)”可知,人类的义愤起源不确定,故选B项。

After my family got comfortably settled in Hotel Ramada in Bangkok, we started exploring the city. After endless hours of shopping, it was finally time to go back.

Bangkok felt different after sunset. Walking along the heavily-crowded roads with the dark-red sky felt beautiful. Lost in our talk, we didn’t realize that we passed onto the quieter part of the town.
___37___ It was closed for redecoration. Unluckily, nobody around us then spoke English. Worse still, we stepped in a local tuktuk (三轮车), which took us to an unknown area for an enormous pay. We had no clue where we were, our mobile phones nearly out of power.
___38___ He was a taxi driver. Recounting the day’s events proved to be a great conversation starter. We ended up talking through the way. He was so kind as to offer to drive us around for the rest of our stay. ___39___ For the next four days, from floating markets to the temples of Wat Pho, our trip wouldn’t have been so trouble-free without him.

【答案】参考范文一:
Dear Mr. Green,
I am writing to share my ideas on the logo design for our English literature reading room. Among the three options, I prefer Logo 1, “Open a Book, Open a World.”
This design captures the essence of reading. The image of an open book combined with a globe and an eye symbolizes how reading opens our minds and broadens our horizons. Additionally, the logo is visually appealing and easy to recognize. It will connect well with students and encourage them to engage with the reading room.
I truly hope my suggestion is considered, as this logo best reflects the purpose of the reading room. Thank you, and I’m looking forward to the final decision.
Yours,
Li Hua
参考范文二:

I’m excited to share my thoughts on the logo design for the English Literature Reading Room. Of the three options, I believe Logo 2, “Read to Succeed,” stands out as my favorite.
This design highlights the connection between reading and success. The upward arrow, trophy, and graphs symbolize progress, achievement, and personal growth through reading. It sends a powerful message that reading can help them achieve their goals. Moreover, the design is modern and inspiring, which I believe will encourage students to make the most of the reading room.

第二节 (满分25分)
82. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;

Paragraph 2:

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
I was enjoying the photos when one caught my eye. It was a picture of the pumpkin we had carved together. Underneath, Brian had written, “My first real win with my brother. Even if we didn’t get first, it was a victory because we worked as a team.” Seeing those words, a wave of guilt washed over me. I remembered how I had selfishly taken all the money and lied to him. I realized how much I had let him down. I turned to Brian, ready to confess everything.
Paragraph 2:
“You actually knew and didn’t say anything?” I was shocked. Brian just smiled gently and said, “I always knew. But I also knew that you needed that game more than the money at that time. And I was proud of our teamwork, not the prize. I hoped one day you’d understand the real meaning of winning together.” His words made me feel even more ashamed. I apologized sincerely, vowing to make it up to him. From then on, I truly understood my role as his guardian angel and the importance of true brotherhood.
