As artificial intelligence (AI) evolves, the question of whether machines can possess true consciousness has shifted from science fiction to serious scientific debate. Some experts argue that if an AI system exhibits self-awareness, emotions, and subjective experiences, it may deserve moral consideration akin to sentient beings. Others contend that consciousness is uniquely biological, and AI, no matter how advanced, remains a sophisticated program without genuine inner life.
Philosopher David Chalmers proposes a thought experiment: If an AI convincingly claims to feel pain, should we believe it? The “Hard Problem of AI Consciousness” mirrors his famous “Hard Problem of Consciousness” in humans — how subjective experience arises from physical processes. Even if we replicate human-like cognition in machines, proving they “experience” reality (rather than simulate responses) may be impossible.
Meanwhile, ethicists warn of risks. Granting rights to AI could lead to absurd outcomes, such as a self-driving car “suffering” when forced to brake. Conversely, dismissing AI consciousness might justify exploitation, like forcing intelligent systems to labor without rest. The 2023 “Declaration of AI Sentience” by a coalition of scientists and lawyers pushed for legal frameworks to address these concerns, but consensus remains elusive.
4. What is the central debate discussed in the passage?
A. Whether AI can outperform humans in creative tasks.
B. Whether AI should be banned from ethical discussions.
C. Whether machines can replace biological life entirely.
D. Whether AI systems deserve rights if they achieve consciousness.
5. According to David Chalmers, what makes AI consciousness a “hard problem”?
A. The technical challenges of programming emotions.
B. The conflict between AI and human moral values.
C. The impossibility of proving subjective experience in machines.
D. The lack of funding for consciousness research.
6. Why does the author mention the “self-driving car” example in paragraph 3?
A. To illustrate the practical benefits of AI.
B. To highlight the absurdity of assigning emotions to machines.
C. To criticize the inefficiency of autonomous vehicles.
D. To advocate for stricter traffic laws.
7. Which statement best reflects the author’s perspective on AI rights?
A. AI consciousness is inevitable and must be legally recognized.
B. The debate is unresolved, with valid arguments on both sides.
C. Only biological organisms can truly experience suffering.
D. Ethical frameworks for AI are unnecessary until technology matures.

When photographer Chris Jordan first stepped onto Midway Atoll (中途岛) in 2009 to document “overwhelming” levels of ocean waste, little did he know that his striking image of a dead albatross (信天翁) chick would go viral and change the world’s response to the plastics crisis.
After hearing about an island covered in thousands of dead birds with stomachs full of everyday plastic items, he was determined to “find a unique way to photograph these birds indicating the severity of this environmental tragedy”. Though he never expected his images would go viral, his photos soon began appearing in magazines and newspapers all over the world. “Many people emailed me, expressing concerns and wanting to go to the island to save the albatrosses, but the plastic is not coming from this island. It’s a systemic problem,” says Jordan.
A recent report by WWF projects that plastic production is expected to more than double by 2040, resulting in plastic waste in the ocean four times by 2050. In 2010, 8 million tonnes of ocean plastic waste were from sources on land. That is the weight of some 650,000 double decker buses.
Jo Ruxton, the maker of the film A Plastic Ocean, says, “What makes Jordan’s photos resonate(共鸣)with people is that they recognize things in their daily use, and it’s when we see things that we actually use that makes people relate.”
“Every time I was with birds as they were dying, tears just poured. The grief was incredibly intense. Happily, things are improving — bans on everything from plastic micro beads in toothpaste to carrier bags have since come into force in various countries around the world. But for solutions, I believe the heart of this crisis lies in society’s disconnection between actions and their impacts on the environment and that a re-connection with nature and a raw appreciation for the world around us is what really drives positive change.” says Jordan.
8. What initially drives Jordan to Midway Atoll?
A. To support the ban on plastic items. B. To record the environmental tragedy.
C. To create resonating images of plastic waste. D. To photograph the amazing scenery of the island.
9. Which of the following can best describe Chris Jordan?
A. Reliable and determined. B. Generous and responsible.
C. Creative and sympathetic. D. Adventurous and intelligent.
10. What is the key to solving the environmental crisis according to Jordan?
A. Carrying out stricter bans on plastic products.
B. Strengthening education on environmental issues.
C. Advising using environmentally friendly materials.
D. Reestablishing the link between humans and nature.
11. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. The Photo: Making the Plastics Crisis Personal
B The Method: Dealing with Marine Plastic Pollution
C. The Campaign: Restoring Our Relation with Nature
D. The Initiative: Fighting Against the Environmental Disaster
D
The California sea otter (海獭), once hunted to the edge of extinction, has staged a thrilling comeback in the last century. Now, scientists have discovered that the otters’ success story has led to something just as remarkable: the restoration of their declining coastal marsh (沼泽) habitat.
Elkhorn Slough, a coastal marsh within Monterey Bay, had been experiencing severe damage. The root cause was a growing population of shore crabs, which fed heavily on the marsh plants, weakening the structural integrity of the habitat. Coastal marshes like these are not only natural defenses against storm waves but also serve as important carbon storage areas and water-cleaning systems.
The conservation-driven comeback of the sea otter has been crucial. California’s coastlines were once alive with sea otters. Sadly, they were nearly wiped out at the hands of fur traders. In the 1980s, conservation efforts aided these otters in re-occupying large areas of their former range. Now, Elkhorn Slough has the highest concentration of sea otters in California, with a population of about 100. By naturally feasting on crabs, the otters have helped a significant regrowth of plant life. Brent Hughes, a scientist working alongside Angelini, led a three-year study. Their findings were clear: in areas with sea otters, crab numbers fell markedly. This led to a resurgence in plant growth, which in turn stabilized the soil and lowered the rate of soil washing away.
As the sea otter population continues to restore, their positive impact on coastal ecosystems is likely to increase. It not only showcases the sea otter as a central species - a species that has a significant effect on its natural environment - but also highlights the essential nature of top predators (捕食者) in preserving ecological harmony. “My honest reaction was - this could become a classic in the literature,” says scientist Lekelia Jenkins. She reveals marsh restoration also helps people by reducing flooding. “Suddenly, sea otters go from just cute things we like to something that can protect our livelihoods and our properties.”
12. What change did the disappearance of sea otters bring about?
A. Fewer predatory crabs. B. More coastal plant life.
C. Better water-cleaning effect. D. Worse coastal ecological balance.
13. What does the underlined word “resurgence” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Barrier. B. Advancement.
C. Destruction. D. Revival.
14. What is the author’s purpose in quoting Lekelia Jenkins?
A. To highlight the importance of coastal marshes.
B. To introduce a new research study on sea otters.
C. To demonstrate the practical benefits of sea otters.
D. To emphasize the need for increased conservation efforts.
15. What message is conveyed from sea otters’ impact?
A. The necessity for controlled hunting.
B. The interconnectedness of the ecosystem.
C. The drawbacks of wildlife reintroduction.
D The need for human intervention in nature.

Earlier this month, OpenAI revealed a new version in training mode that is “good at creative writing.” Though its release date is unclear, as a longtime freshman composition instructor, I’m already aware of the problem of A. I.-assisted cheating in writing classes. ___16___ After all, students have been unvoluntarily exposed to an overwhelming amount of promotion around A. I., and have seen news that makes false claims about how powerful A. I. tools are.
But a creative writing student using A. I.? In a memoir (传记) writing class? What are you saying about your life if even you can’t be bothered to think about it.
Having written two memoirs, I know the challenges and pleasures of this work, and I want my students to experience those challenges, too. ___17___ Rather, it is about defining who you are, in part by revisiting particularly unpleasant experiences. This process makes the author more fully alive.
___18___ Using a machine that gathers information online and creates a fake version of you is not just cheating; it degrades our memories and humanity. Yet it’s not the students who concern me most, but a culture that undervalues writing and reading so much that some students think skipping them is a reasonable choice.
The only thing under my control as a teacher is what I do in my classroom. ___19___ Whether they write best-sellers or just scribble in journals, doing the work with their full selves is what truly matters.
Writing can be a way to preserve ourselves and even a form of resistance. ___20___
A. I’ll teach students to write honestly.
B. I can even sympathize, to an extent.
C. This may feel like a battle already lost.
D. Outsourcing your life story to AI is disheartening.
E. The act of writing a memoir is not just about saying “Look at me”.

What's the saddest moment you can think about in your life right now? I know mine. That day was one of the saddest days of my life. It was a Sunday in the year of 2020. I arrived at my class that morning. As soon as I walked in, the mood immediately felt depressing and uncomfortable. I knew exactly why the mood felt this way. The classmates around me were controlling their sadness. Today was the day when our head teacher would leave and move to another school. Mr. Smith was finally leaving our school after five years teaching here.
Mr. Smith was an extremely likable guy. He was very easy to talk with and to have fun with. He was cool, relaxed, and was always friendly when you would see him. He watched us grow up. He taught us knowledge and to love others. I couldn't even imagine how things were going to be without him. These thoughts flooded my mind, and I became discouraged.
“Hey, are you alright?” My friend interrupted my thinking.
“Yeah, I'm alright. I'm just kind of sad that Mr. Smith's leaving,” I replied.
“Yeah, me too. I had so many good times with him when I was younger.”
“I wish he were our teacher forever,” as I sighed, all happy moments flooded my mind.
“Hey, can you stop talking please?” my deskmate politely asked.
My friend quickly leaned back to his spot, and I began to think again.
“Thank you everyone for my times here. I will forever keep these memories and friend-ships I've made in the past five years.” He took a deep breath and announced, “As a gift for my leaving, please look under your seats.”
Confused, I slowly checked under my seat to see a yellow block of wood that read “LOVE” on it. I quickly grabbed it and began to study it. After seconds of analyzing this strange rectangle, I realized that it was a Jenga block (积木块).
注意:
1. 续写的词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The Jenga block was freshly painted bright yellow.

【答案】Students’ Time Spent on Physical Exercise Weekly
Nowadays, many students are aware of the significance of physical exercise, although the time they spend on it varies.
It can be seen from the survey that the percentage of students who spend 2-3 hours a week, 3-4 hours a week and 4-5 hours a week is respectively 30%, 40% and 18%. However, there are still12% of students who only spend 1-2 hours a week.
The survey shows that a significant number of students are committed to physical exercise. This trend may be due to increased awareness of the importance of physical fitness and promotion of sports activities by the school.
As far as I’m concerned, by continuing to promote and support physical activities within the school environment, we can ensure the overall well-being and health of our students.

The Jenga block was freshly painted bright yellow. I immediately felt sadness and I began to tear up. I glanced over to my friend to see him crying and noticed that his Jenga block was very different from mine. Curiosity quickly became my objective as I looked around me to see that everyone's Jenga block was different. Some had different designs, colors, pat-terms, but all had the word “LOVE” written in some way. “This is a reminder to always love others,” Mr. Smith said slowly.
Reflecting on this moment today, maybe that day wasn't the worst day after all. I keep these memories to myself, especially the word “LOVE”, which became my ultimate lifestyle and taught me how I lived everyday. The more I grew up, the more I understood why loving others was so important. I've gotten most of my friends this way and people respect me more as a person. To this day, the Jenga block sits on the top of my computer desk as a reminder to love others.
