The summer vacation is drawing near. Here we have prepared a visual feast for our boys and girls. Let’s feast our eyes first.
Jurassic World Dominion
It is the final film in the second trilogy of dino-movies, and it’s the first one which really deserves to be called “Jurassic World” rather than “Jurassic Park”. Yes, prehistoric dinosaurs are out and about in the wild this time, rather than being stuck in a theme park.

Official Competition
Cruz and Banderas have been two of Spanish cinema’s famous superstars for decades, and yet have only rarely acted on the screen together. Now, once again, that wrong has been righted by Official Competition. Cruz is an art-house director who is adapting a Nobel-Prize-winning novel in the film. Not a typical science-fiction movie, Brian and Charles is a low-budget, low-key British comedy starring and co-written by David Earl, a regular in Ricky Gervais’s sitcoms. “Brian and Charles is this year’s sweetest film by a country mile,” says Cory. “It’s like Edgar Wright’s The Mighty Boosh project thrown into a cotton-candy machine, and it is also one of the most surprising films about being a parent, even when your son is a 7-feet-tall robot who loves cabbages.”

After four Toy Story films, everyone’s favourite space ranger action figure, Buzz Lightyear, gets to leave Woody and friends behind, and go off on an adventure on his own. Or so you might assume so. In fact, the latest Pixar cartoon isn’t about the toy.

I arrived home from work, my mind racing. I was scheduled to perform an experiment using a pricey piece of equipment, but I had spent the whole day worrying about the experiment which was on the top of my agenda (日程), and I amazingly longed to shut off my anxious thoughts. So after dinner, I made a cup of hot chocolate, stretched myself on my sofa, and opened a page. Almost instantly, my mind left behind the details of experimental design and stepped into a land of monsters, magic dust, and man-like bears comprising a wonderful world distinct (不同的) from my daily life. It was exactly what I needed.
Growing up, I was virtually never a big fan of novels. My classmates would be crazy about the latest Harry Potter book, while my copy sat collecting dust on a shelf. Instead, I would choose to read through the reference books related to my academic fields for better grades. After I started graduate school, extracurricular reading didn’t appeal to me at all but I spent most of my time on campus digesting research papers and textbooks and my mind couldn’t handle processing fact-filled nonfiction books at home, too. So I knew that I needed to find a way to enjoy reading again.
To help me stick with it, I made a New Year’s resolution: I would read two fiction books per month for the entire year. The result was an almost instant appreciation of fiction, along with many unexpected results including ones that have benefited my schoolwork.
What surprised me the most was how much I learned. Some of the best books I read were historical fictional stories happening in a realistic historical setting. I learned about life in different countries, as well as struggles people there faced during difficult periods in their histories. The books have helped me build sympathy and understanding, with an unexpected benefit: I’ve started to think more deeply about the diversity of issues in the scientific community and could serve it, heart and soul.
4. What did the author do to wipe out the anxiety?
A. He drowned it in chocolate. B. He conducted an experiment.
C. He slept on the sofa leisurely. D. He escaped into a fantasy world.
5. What was the author’s attitude towards reading in paragraph 2?
A. Reading novels was not attractive to the author.
B. Reading a good book was time well spent.
C. He was too busy to take good care of his books.
D. The Harry Potter book wasn’t as good as expected.
6. How did the New Year’s resolution benefit the author?
A. More sympathy went out to him.
B. His moral values were strengthened.
C. He learned much about religious diversity.
D. He gained new insight into his academic fields.
7. What’s the best title of the text?
A. Reading: A Lifelong Hobby B. The Power of Research Papers
C. Novels: Love at Second Sight D. The Benefits of History Reading
C
While we aim to avoid any appearance of baseless theories, it is noteworthy to observe the long-standing practice of putting magnets (磁铁) in cows, a phenomenon that has been carefully unfolding for years. Why are farmers putting magnets in cows?
Known as cow magnets, the devices are placed inside cattle to deal with “hardware disease”. Hardware Disease occurs after an animal eats a metallic object that then makes a hole in the wall of the reticulum, the second stomach room in ruminant animals This issue arises from the natural eating behaviors of these ruminants, similar to a person at an unlimited food event — quickly and eagerly large bites without sufficient chewing. This fast-paced feeding approach makes them tend to unintentionally consume metal pieces in their food, including broken farm machinery parts, nails and wires used in fencing, for instance.
Metal objects entering the reticulum may result in infections, increased body temperatures, digestive problems, and unease for the animals. To address hardware disease, the main strategy is to prevent metal from entering the cattle’s diet. Farmers have also adopted the method of placing cow magnets into the stomach using either a stomach tube or a balling gun. The cow magnet attracts such objects and prevents them from becoming fixed in the animal’s tissue. These magnets, once positioned, remain within the animals throughout their lifespan, only being removed after death when the cows pass away or are processed for meat.
Moseley, a Veterinary Medicine professor, states in a hardware disease resource, “The magnet gathers foreign metallic objects, reducing the risk of making a hole in the reticulum.” Research shows a mild magnetic field affects a cow’s small blood pathways, improving circulation and aiding recovery without significant impact on the cow or milk quality.
8. Why are magnets fed to cows?
A. To change feeding habits. B. To prevent hardware disease.
C. To improve the milk quality. D. To enhance digestive system.
9. What is the main cause of hardware disease in ruminant animals?
A. Eating without chewing. B. Taking magnets by mistake.
C. Sufficient chewing hard food. D. Swallowing metals accidentally.
10. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To describe the historical practice of putting magnets in cows.
B. To deny the adoption of cow magnets to enhance cattle health.
C. To discuss the influence of a mild magnetic field on milk quality.
D. To explain the reason for using magnets to prevent hardware disease.
11. What might be a logical continuation of the passage?
A. Exploring more potential benefits of cow magnets.
B. Investigating the broader applications of magnets.
C. Discussing the alternative methods of caring for cows.
D. Evaluating the long-term effects of magnets on animals.

Like many people over the past few years, I have found myself turning to audiobooks as my main means of reading literature. I find it far more comfortable to “read with my ears” while my eyes are resting. My consumption of new books has doubled as a result--but a recent paper makes me wonder if this will come at the price of my comprehension.
The study comes from Boaz Keysar and Janet Geipel, both at the University of Chicago, and it draws from the “dual process model” of mental processing. According to this-view, we have two ways of assessing information. System 1 is intuitive (直觉的), relying on natural ability and feeling. It is quick, but likely exposed to misinformation. System 2 is analytical involving the use of logic reasoning. It is mentally demanding. When it is engaged, we think our way through the material step by step. For decades, psychologists have designed various tests to determine which of these two systems a person is using. As one example, consider the/ following question: How many animals of each kind did Moses take on the Ark (方舟)? If you answered two, you were probably only considering the core of the question, which is System 1 thinking. To get to the right answer-zero, you need to think more carefully about the wording, which would allow you to remember it was Noah who built the Ark, not Moses. That is the kind of analytical process.
Keysar and Geipel’s brilliant idea was to investigate whether the sensory form-seeing vs. hearing-of the information would make a difference. They found that it did: when answering these kinds of simple questions, participants were more likely to make errors when the sentences were spoken out loud, rather than written.
A greater reliance on our feelings could be a problem if we are consuming information that needs logical study. For this reason. I will return to reading non-fiction with my eyes rather than my ears. But I won’t stop listening to novels. I am quite happy to go with the flow of my emotions while my critical mind takes a break.
12. What does the author think of listening to audiobooks?
A. It is economical. B. It is demanding.
C. It is time-consuming. D. It is relaxing.
13. Which of the following best describes System 2 model?
A. Fairly reliable. B. Fully automatic.
C. Question-centered. D. Emotion-involved.
14. Why is the Ark mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. To present a fact. B. To illustrate a view.
C. To introduce a topic. D. To draw a conclusion.
15. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. Listening to books comes at a price.
B. Reading non-fiction books benefits.
C. Critical thinking is a must in reading.
D. Ways of processing information differ.

Not all great writers are great spellers. If you want to be published, it's vital to submit a perfect, professionally presented manuscript (原稿). ____16____ No editor is likely to tolerate a writer who does not take the trouble to spell words correctly.
I keep two reference books close-by on my desk: dictionary and thesaurus I don't trust my laptop's spellchecker. ____17____ Of course, these days there are plenty of online dictionaries and thesauruses, but I'm old-fashioned enough to prefer a hard cover and pages I can leaf through with my fingers. I use the Concise Oxford Dictionary and the Collins Thesaurus.
____18____ It should give you a precise definition of each word, thus differentiating it from other words whose meanings are similar, but not identical. It will also usually show how the word is pronounced.
In addition, I have an old two-volume copy of the Shorter Oxford Dictionary, picked up a few years ago in a bookshop sale for just 99 pence. Of course, with its 2,672 pages, it's not exactly short. It contains around 163,000 words, plus word combinations and idiomatic phrases. ____19____ However, if I need to check the origin of a word or to look up examples of its usage, there's nothing better.
For well over a hundred years the most influential English dictionary was Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language published in 1755. "To make dictionaries is dull (乏味) work," wrote Johnson, illustrating one definition of "dull". ____20____ A few minutes spent casting your eye over a page or two can be a rewarding experience.
A. I don't often use this dictionary.
B. It takes no account of the context.
C. But I still don't want to replace them.
D. But a dictionary can be a pleasure to read.
E. Of course, a dictionary is not only for spelling.
F. That means good grammar and no spelling mistakes.
G. Dictionaries don't always give you enough information.

The car turned onto the familiar road that led to Grandma’s farm. “Jude, this summer holiday will be a great chance for you to stay with your grandma,” Dad said as he drove. Every moment, we were moving farther away from the city, the place where I knew how to do things right.
The car engine wasn’t off before Grandma hugged me. I slowly dragged myself out of the car. “Jude, you look unhappy. Why?” Grandma asked. She acted like nothing bad had happened last time. Could I ask how much money her neighbor, Mr. Jackson, had lost because of my mistake? Was he still upset with me? “I’m fine,” I answered. “I’m just missing my computer camp. Computers are something I’m good at.” “That sounds disappointing,” Grandma nodded.
I liked visiting the farm during breaks before I messed things up last summer. Grandma lived alone, and Mr. Jackson was like family to her. Then one day, I forgot to lock the gate and let the goats into his flower beds. He lost almost all his roses for the farmers’ market.
Now, back at the farm, I felt nervous. I was trying to hide in the room when I saw Mr. Jackson! He was opening the door and calling Grandma. “I need help!” he yelled to her. “Just a second for the freshly harvested roses!” That was when he saw me. I felt my heart tighten and was ready for his criticism. I deserved it. He had probably been waiting for this moment since last summer.
However, Mr. Jackson greeted me happily, “Great, Jude is here! Your grandma always tells us you are a wonderfully competent computer programmer.” I shook my head. “I am not competent. I am sorry I messed things up.” He was surprised and comforted me, “It was an accident. Being competent doesn’t mean you never make mistakes.”
I looked out of the window. There were piles of roses waiting to be sold. “Jude, can you help us? We want to sell roses online. We have a computer and all the parts for our internet connection, but we just can’t set it up,” Grandma asked. No internet. They seemed to live in the twentieth century.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
I could be someone who was really competent.

B
D 5. A 6. D 7. C

根据文章第一段“So after dinner, I made a cup of hot chocolate, stretched myself on my sofa, and opened a page. Almost instantly, my mind left behind the details of experimental design and stepped into a land of monsters, magic dust, and man-like bears comprising a wonderful world distinct (不同的) from my daily life. It was exactly what I needed. (晚饭后,我泡了一杯热巧克力,躺在沙发上伸伸懒腰,打开了一页书。顷刻之间,我的思绪离开了实验设计的细节,进入了一个充满怪物、魔尘和像人一样的熊的世界,这是一个与我日常生活截然不同的奇妙世界。这正是我所需要的)”可知,作者消除自己焦虑的方法就是打开一本书,沉浸到一个幻想的世界之中。故选D项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“Instead, I would choose to read through the reference books related to my academic fields for better grades. After I started graduate school, extracurricular reading didn’t appeal to me at all but I spent most of my time on campus digesting research papers and textbooks and my mind couldn’t handle processing fact-filled nonfiction books at home, too. (相反,我会选择阅读与我的学术领域相关的参考书,以获得更好的成绩。在我开始读研后,课外阅读对我毫无吸引力,但我把大部分时间花在校园里消化研究论文和教科书,我的大脑也无法处理家里充满事实的非小说类书籍)”可知,作者对于阅读小说没什么兴趣,更喜欢阅读学术领域相关的书籍。故选A项。
根据文章最后一段“The books have helped me build sympathy and understanding, with an unexpected benefit: I’ve started to think more deeply about the diversity of issues in the scientific community and could serve it, heart and soul. (这些书帮助我建立了同情和理解,带来了一个意想不到的好处:我开始更深入地思考科学界问题的多样性,并可以全心全意地为之服务)”可推知,作者所阅读的书让他对自己的学科有了新的见解和看法。故选D项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段和第二段可知,作者只会阅读和自己学科相关的书籍,希望自己能取得更好的成绩。根据文章第三段“To help me stick with it, I made a New Year’s resolution: I would read two fiction books per month for the entire year. The result was an almost instant appreciation of fiction, along with many unexpected results including ones that have benefited my schoolwork. (为了帮助我坚持下去,我制定了一个新年计划:一整年每个月读两本小说。结果是,我几乎立刻就对小说产生了欣赏,还有许多意想不到的结果,包括一些对我的学业有益的结果)”可知,从这从一开始不喜欢阅读小说,到阅读小说之后有了许多意想不到的结果。由此可知,C项Novels: Love at Second Sight(小说:一见不钟情)适合作本文最佳标题。故选C项。
B 9. D 10. D 11. A

根据第二段中的“Known as cow magnets, the devices are placed inside cattle to deal with ‘hardware disease’.(这种被称为牛磁铁的设备被放置在牛体内,以应对‘创伤性胃炎’。)”和第三段中的“Metal objects entering the reticulum may result in infections, increased body temperatures, digestive problems, and unease for the animals. To address hardware disease, the main strategy is to prevent metal from entering the cattle’s diet. Farmers have also adopted the method of placing cow magnets into the stomach using either a stomach tube or a balling gun. The cow magnet attracts such objects and prevents them from becoming fixed in the animal’s tissue.(金属物体进入蜂窝胃可能会导致感染、体温升高、消化问题和动物的不安。为了解决创伤性胃炎,主要策略是防止金属进入牛的饮食。农民们还采用了将牛磁铁放入胃里的方法,要么使用胃管,要么使用滚球枪。牛磁铁吸引这些物体,防止它们固定在动物的组织中。)”可知,将牛磁铁放置在牛体内,可以吸引金属物体,防止金属固定在动物的组织里,从而预防创伤性胃炎。故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“This issue arises from the natural eating behaviors of these ruminants, similar to a person at an unlimited food event — quickly and eagerly large bites without sufficient chewing. This fast-paced feeding approach makes them tend to unintentionally consume metal pieces in their food, including broken farm machinery parts, nails and wires used in fencing, for instance.(这个问题源于这些反刍动物的自然进食行为,类似于一个人在无限制的食物活动中——在没有充分咀嚼的情况下快速而急切地大口进食。
和第二段中的“Known as cow magnets, the devices are placed inside cattle to deal with ‘hardware disease’.(这种被称为牛磁铁的设备被放置在牛体内,以应对‘创伤性胃炎’。)”

D 13. A 14. B 15. A
根据文章第一段“Like many people over the past few years, I have found myself turning to audiobooks as my main means of reading literature. I find it far more comfortable to “read with my ears” while my eyes are resting.(像许多人一样,在过去的几年里,我发现自己把有声读物作为阅读文学作品的主要手段。我发现在眼睛休息的时候“用耳朵阅读”要舒服得多。)”以及最后一段“But I won’t stop listening to novels. I am quite happy to go with the flow of my emotions while my critical mind takes a break.(但我不会停止听小说。当我的批判性思维得到休息时,我很高兴随自己的情绪流动而去。)”可知,作者认为听有声读物会让人放松。故选D。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段“System 2 is analytical involving the use of logic reasoning. It is mentally demanding. When it is engaged, we think our way through the material step by step.(系统2是分析性的,涉及逻辑推理的使用。这是精神上的要求。当它参与时,我们一步一步地思考材料。)”可知,System 2涉及使用逻辑推理进行信息处理,它要求精神上的努力,通过一步一步地思考材料来得出结论。因此,System 2的结果相对可靠得多。故选A。
根据文章第二段“As one example, consider the/ following question: How many animals of each kind did Moses take on the Ark(方舟)? If you answered two, you were probably only considering the core of the question, which is System 1 thinking. To get to the right answer-zero, you need to think more carefully about the wording, which would allow you to remember it was Noah who built the Ark, not Moses. That is the kind of analytical process.(举个例子,考虑下面的问题:摩西带了多少种动物上了方舟?
故选A。

Dear friends and distinguished judges,
I’m contestant NO. 12. I’m privileged to stand here and deliver my speech themed on “saving our planet”.
Our planet is facing numerous challenges, such as pollution, deforestation, and climate change, which have led to the destruction of ecosystems and the loss of biodiversity. These problems are largely caused by human activities, including overconsumption, industrialization, and the burning of fossil fuels.
To save our planet, we must take immediate action. First, we should reduce our carbon footprint by adopting sustainable practices, such as using public transportation and recycling waste. Second, we need to protect natural resources by supporting renewable energy sources. Lastly, we must raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation and encourage others to join the cause.
Let us remember that our planet is our home, and it is our responsibility to protect it. Together, we can make a difference and create a sustainable future for generations to come.
Thank you!

注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
I could be someone who was really competent.

Within a few hours, orders for roses flooded in.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I could be someone who was really competent. “I can definitely help with that! Where are the parts?” Following Grandma, I went into the room, where a computer sat surrounded by some scattered parts. Rolling up my sleeves, I carefully connected everything. It was a piece of cake for me. “Done!” I announced confidently. After a few adjustments, the internet was up and running. Now it was time to sell the roses. I decided to start from my social media platform. I quickly uploaded photos, added descriptions, and set prices. Before long, notifications started showing up — people were noticing. My abilities made a difference!
Within a few hours, orders for roses flooded in. “This is amazing, Jude!” Grandma cheered with joy as she began bustling about, packing flowers. Mr. Jackson chuckled warmly as he handed me another bunch to label. The energy was electric — everyone was on their feet, moving quickly to keep up with the growing orders. The farm felt alive, and so did I. To our surprise, the roses sold out in just half a day. “You’ve brought the farm into the twenty-first century, Jude,” Grandma hugged me tightly. I realized that being competent wasn’t about avoiding mistakes. It was about facing them head-on and making the most of my strengths
