When Param Jaggi was five years old, he had a passion to take things apart to see what was inside. He started with toys and even broke a computer, which made his parents not too pleased. As he got older, he shifted from breaking things to building things, which greatly comforted his parents. In middle school. he started working on projects in his kitchen laboratory, and his first project was making biofuels.
Although Jaggi’s parents initially thought his experiments were just. a boyhood fancy, he remained determined to make a difference to the environment. Eventually, his parents came around and started supporting his dreams. Jaggi’s interest continued as he grew up, but he focused more on solving real problems, especially those related to the environment.
At 17, Jaggi went beyond his school projects and. co-founded Ecoviate, a company that uses technology to solve everyday energy and environmental problems. He planned to transform people’s idea that going green is expensive, by making available a series of affordable products that are easy to use. One of his notable inventions was the “CO2ube”, a device that could be attached to vehicle tailpipes to reduce carbon emissions, and it’s available to many people at low prices. He also created a smartwatch that changed body heat into energy, which can be used to power up the watch as well as mobile phones.
Young Jaggi, now a third-grade college student studying engineering and economics, has become a famous eco-innovator and his company is developing promisingly. However, Jaggi’s vision to save the environment goes beyond creating products. Scientists from Australia and Indonesia have discovered the oldest cave art on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. This ancient painting, presenting a wild pig and three human-like figures, is at least 51,200 years old, making it over 5,000 years older than the previous oldest known cave art.
The artwork features a pig standing still with its mouth slightly open, surrounded by at least three human-like figures, one of which is holding a stick, another appearing to be in front of the pig with a stick touching its throat, and the third figure seemingly upside down with one hand reaching toward the pig’s head.
The discovery suggests that early humans were capable of creative thought much earlier than previously believed. Professor Maxime Aubert from Griffith University in Australia explained that the painting, by demonstrating that humans at that time could think in abstract ways, represents the oldest evidence of storytelling, an essential cognitive leap (认知飞跃) in human evolution. Adhi Agus Oktaviana, an Indonesian rock art specialist who led the team of scientists, stated that storytelling has been an essential part of human culture for a long time, and while humans have likely been telling stories for much longer than 51,200 years, this painting provides the oldest evidence of such storytelling.
Previously, the oldest known drawings were found in the Blombos Caves in South Africa, dating back 75,000 to 100,000 years. These were simple geometric (几何学的) patterns. By comparison, the new painting in Sulawesi represents a significant advancement, showing a more complex understanding and description of the world.
The innovative dating method used for this discovery, which involves laser (激光器) cutting small parts of the artwork for detailed analysis, has provided more accurate results and can lead to the re-dating of other cave art sites around the world, potentially pushing back the timeline for the appearance of representational art even further.
In summary, the discovery of the Sulawesi cave painting is a groundbreaking one that sheds new light on the early cognitive abilities of humans and enhances our understanding of the evolution of human creativity.
8. Why are Maxime Aubert and Adhi Agus Oktaviana mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A To highlight their roles in leading the discovery.
B. To demonstrate the significance of the discovery.
C. To raise doubts about early humans’ creativity.
D. To point out their disagreement with previous research.
9. What sets the new discovery apart from previous ones?
A. It shows artistic complexity. B. It is located in South Africa.
C. It features various animal figures. D. It is characterized by geometric patterns.
10. What role did the innovative dating method play in the discovery?
A. It restored damaged parts of the artwork. B. It proved the discovery the earliest globally.
C. It dated earlier discoveries in the worldwide. D. It provided a new way to reevaluate art history.
11. Which of the following is the most suitable title for the text?
A. New Methods Used in Dating Cave Art
B. The Discovery of Ancient Cave Art in Europe
C. The Development of Human Creativity in History
D. Exploring Early Human Creativity Through Cave Art

Bacteria (细菌) know how to rough it out all over the earth. Ask most of them where they’d truly prefer to settle through, and a kitchen sponge (海绵) would probably top the list. Yes, it turns out that the very tool we use to clean our plates, which is warm, damp, and full of nutritious food pieces, is packed of tiny life.
Lingchong You, a biologist at Duke University, along with his team, used computers to model the complex environment of a sponge for a 2022 study. He found that sponges featuring pockets of varying sizes are something that really matters for promoting bacterial growth. This holds significance as certain bacteria tend to grow independently while others demand the companionship of others. Within a sponge filled with holes and pockets, there exist such an abundance of diverse structures that everyone attains a state of satisfaction.
Nevertheless, it does not necessarily follow that these tools present a health risk to us as well. Bacteria exist everywhere and not all are harmful; in fact, many perform vital jobs. The important question is, therefore, are the bacteria found in sponges even worth worrying about?
In 2017, Jennifer Quinlan, a professor of food safety, and her colleagues, collected kitchen sponges from 100 homes, finding that only 1 – 2% of those sponges contained bacteria linked to food poisoning in humans and the ones that did contained only small amounts of harmful bacteria. “The vast majority of bacteria on sponges do not cause illness, and they’re just going to make them smell.” says Quinlan. “Having said that, there is a possibility that if you use a sponge to wipe up raw meat that you could have some of those disease-causing bacteria on there, and studies have found that those bacteria can be separated from kitchen sponges.”
This is not the whole story yet. If dangerous bacteria happen to arrive on the scene, the sponge’s special make-up makes it an ideal place for them to grow and multiply. And there’s evidence this is the case.
12. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Sponges are perfect tools in the kitchen.
B. Bacteria prefer to live in dry environment.
C. Kitchen sponges are good home for bacteria.
D. Bacteria affect kitchen sponges’ performance.
13. What did Lingchong You find in his study?
A. How sponges are exactly structured. B. What encourages bacterial growth.
C. How bacteria react to the environment. D. Why bacteria keep company with each other.
14. What does Quinlan think of bacteria on sponges?
A. Relatively harmless. B. Poorly adaptive,
C. Surprisingly unpleasant. D. Widely distributed.
15. What will be probably discussed in the following paragraph?
A. Proofs of bacterial threat. B. The classification of bacteria.
C. Methods to control bacterial growth. D. Research into applications of bacteria.

I kept improving the outline of my paper, eventually turning it into sentences and paragraphs. My initial draft wasn’t perfect. Johnny, a 17-year-old from Whitehorse, had been competing in Cross-Country Skiing for five years. For many young athletes like him in Whitehorse, Yukon, the Yukon Cross-Country Ski Championships were more than just a competition. It was their dream. A year ago, Johnny qualified for the Championships and successfully won a medal.
After the competition, Johnny was eager to share his experience with Hayden, his teammate and best friend. Hayden had narrowly missed qualifying for the Championships. Johnny had watched his friend train tirelessly, push himself to the limit, and always keep his big smile. Johnny knew how much the Championships meant to Hayden.
Johnny handed Hayden some colorful pins. “These are pins I traded with athletes from all over Yukon,” Johnny said with a smile, “I want you to have them, so you can feel a part of the event too.”
Hayden was touched, “Thanks, Johnny. This means a lot.”
“Next time,” Johnny continued, “I hope you can also experience the event. I know you’ll make it.”
Hayden nodded, “I’ll work even harder for that.”
This year’s Yukon Cross-Country Ski Championships would be held in a month. Coach Nick guided the team through daily tough training and the team made significant progress in their skating, cornering, and downhill techniques. Meanwhile, they enhanced their endurance and balance. Both Johnny and Hayden met the Championship standards. Given Johnny’s rich competitive experience. Coach Nick once again qualified Johnny for this year’s event and Hayden was selected as an alternate (替补).
The qualification for the competition excited Johnny, but there was always an idea staying in his mind. Johnny knew his friend had been wanting to go to the Championships for several years. This was the last chance for both of them to attend the Championships, as they would age out of the competition after this year. The thought became clear in his mind, strong and steady.

A. To highlight their roles in leading the discovery.

A Sponges are perfect tools in the kitchen.

【答案】范文一:
My View on Space Exploration
Is space exploration a waste of time and money? Different people have different opinions on this matter. However, as far as I’m concerned, I think it is worthwhile to find out the secrets of the universe.
First, due to the rapidly increasing population, it’s necessary to find a new home for people in space, as the resources on earth will run out one day. Second, exploring space encourages scientists to improve technology that can help people in other ways, too. For example, some everyday products are changing our lives, such as GPS, memory foam pillow, and smartphone cameras, to name but a few.
In closing, exploring space does provide the world with benefits, right?
范文二:
My View on Space Exploration
Some people insist that carrying out space exploration is a waste of time during this period of time when a large number of people still suffer from poverty and hunger. However, I disagree.
Firstly, it is space exploration that arouses scientists’ passion for improving technology. As a result, various satellites now orbit the earth, offering data about weather condition and so on. Moreover, researches have shown that other possible planets in space are most likely to be human’s new home. As the resources on earth will finally run out, stepping into space might be human’s only chance to survive in the future.
In closing, exploring space is a must for humans, which provides many benefits and can even mean life and death in the future.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Johnny explained that this was the last chance for both of them to attend the Championships, and Hayden had been longing for it for years. He believed Hayden deserved this opportunity as he had trained so hard. The coach was moved by Johnny’s selfless act. After considering Johnny’s request carefully, the coach agreed to let Hayden take Johnny’s place.
Hayden accepted the precious chance to compete in the Championships. He was extremely grateful to Johnny. He knew this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and he didn’t want to let Johnny down. In the following days, Hayden trained even harder. When the Championships finally arrived, he gave it his all. Although the competition was tough, Hayden’s determination and hard-work paid off.
