For over 60 years, NASA has been using Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS), a type of nuclear (原子能的) “battery”, to power spacecraft and enable them to travel to some of the darkest, coldest, and farthest reaches of our solar system. If you could plan an RPS-powered mission to any moon in our solar system, which moon would you choose to unlock its mysteries?
K-12 students, your task is to plan a mission that uses RPS to get to a dark, dusty, or faraway moon in our solar system. NASA wants to know what you plan to explore, the discoveries you hope to make, and what your special power is to help you achieve mission success.
Your plan should address all three topics below:
●Dark, dusty, or distant mission destination: Tell us which moon your RPS-powered space mission will go to and describe your mission goal(s).
●RPS: Explain the importance and advantages of using RPS for this mission. Explain how this technology overcomes the challenges of extreme environments and destinations.
●Your power: NASA missions are also powered by people — from mission planning and development to designing, launching, and operating a spacecraft. Tell us what you think your unique power is and how your special power will help you achieve mission success. Your power could be a skill, personal characteristics, or your personal strength that is unique to you.
Every student who puts forward a plan will receive a digital certificate (证书) and an invitation to a virtual event with NASA experts, where students will learn about what powers the NASA workforce to dream big and explore. Three national finalists in each grade category (9 finalists total) will receive a particular virtual session with a NASA RPS expert.
1. Who are the competition intended for?
A. NASA engineers. B. University professors.
C. Professional astronauts. D. Students in certain grades.
2. What must be included in the plans?
A. A list of NASA’s past missions. B. A unique power and its application.
C. A detailed map of the solar system. D. A comparison of different power systems.
3. What will be offered to every student with a plan?
A. A job offer from NASA.
B. A free trip to a space center.
C. A certificate and online event access.
D. A face-to-face meeting with NASA RPS expert.

Students from the Riverview Inclusion Program travelled out to Sydney Motorsport Park for a meeting with an autistic (患孤独症的) race car driver Ben Taylor. The program works with ambassadors (大使) like Ben to help the autistic students realize their potential (潜力). The students were excited to learn about motor sport from a driver who is breaking down barriers (障碍) for autistic people.
Backed by a company, Ben also helped the students to understand that there is a world of opportunities for them beyond the school gates. Currently operating with 500 employees globally, the autistic majority company hires autistic people in a variety of roles, with a focus on IT consulting.
Ben shared insights (领悟) with the students that helped them look to the future and understand if they set goals and are strong-willed, they could realize their dreams and not let personal limitations define them. Over the years, the program has benefited from connections with ambassadors who provide valuable experience and guidance for the students, and Ben was great at providing insights around exactly that.
Ben enjoyed connecting with the students and sharing his experiences both on and off the race track. “It’s important to challenge traditional views on the autistic people so that people understand what we can achieve,” he said. “It’s also important that these children understand there is more for them if they are determined not to let barriers get in the way of who they could be.”
The company’s CEO Bodo Mann said businesses needed to think differently about offering roles to use the students’ potential to deliver greater creativity. “The truth is that the greatest difference these students have is that they think differently,” Mr Mann said. “People can think about this as a barrier to success, but it can also be the world’s greatest opportunity to access creativity and responsibility.”
4 Why did the students visit Ben Taylor?
A To learn driving race cars.
B To get themselves inspired.
C. To experience the race car drivers’ life.
D. To unlock their potential in motor sport.
5. What can we know about the company?
A. Its workers are mainly autistic people.
B. Its Riverview Inclusion Program failed.
C. It helps autistic people find jobs in various fields.
D. It is an IT company that only hires autistic people.
6. What did Ben Taylor expect the students to do?
A. Share their experiences. B. Challenge autistic people.
C. Be aware of their limitations. D. Recognize their potential.
7. Which of the following can best describe Bodo Mann?
A. Far-sighted and humorous. B. Strong-willed and honest.
C. Open-minded and caring. D. Warm-hearted and energetic.

In 2020, scientists claimed to have found a sign of life on Venus (金星): a smelly gas called phosphine that’s made by tiny living things on Earth. The claim was quickly stirring up disagreement. Now, another smelly gas is making waves in the search for alien (外星的) life — now turning to a planet beyond our solar system. Researchers announced on April 16 that they had used data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to discover a gas called dimethyl sulfide (DMS) in the atmosphere of a distant planet called K2-18b. On Earth, DMS is mostly made by tiny ocean plants. On other planets, it could be what’s called a biosignature
The University of Cambridge, which hosts several of the researchers involved in the discovery, was quick to promote the finding as the strongest sign of biological activity outside the solar system. Some media agents followed suit to publicize the DMS as a likely sign of life.
But scientists not involved in the discovery aren’t as overjoyed. For Clara Sousa-Silva, an astrochemist at Bard College who has weathered the storm of the Venus biosignature debate in 2020, she now watches history repeat itself. “The situation is disappointingly familiar. We did not learn enough from the ‘phosphine on Venus’ event,” she said.
Those scientists use JWST to discover gases in K2-18b’s atmosphere by analyzing how starlight changes as it passes through K2-18b’s atmosphere. Each gas leaves unique marks in the light, which appear as squiggly lines on special graphs. They compared these lines to 20 different molecules (分子). Sousa-Silva pointed most of the molecules aren’t structurally similar to DMS.
National Geographic contacted some experts to find out what to make of this new biosignature claim. Their views are represented: It’s an interesting discovery, perhaps even an important step on the way to discovering life on other planets one day. They stressed on “one day”.
8. Why did the researchers consider DMS as a sign of life?
A. It is mostly made up of phosphine.
B. It is just as smelly as phosphine on Venus.
C. It was found on K2-18b that has living things.
D. It is mainly produced by living things on Earth.
9. What is Clara Sousa-Silva’s attitude to the new biosignature claim?
A. Doubtful. B. Excited. C. Confused. D. Uncaring.
10. How did scientists identify DMS in K2-18b’s atmosphere?
A. By observing ocean plants on K2-18b.
B. By directly collecting gas from K2-18b.
C. By studying starlight passing through its atmosphere.
D. By matching it with 20 molecules of similar structure.
11. What can be inferred from the experts’views in the last paragraph?
A. Findings from JWST’s are quite disappointing.
B. More evidence is needed to confirm the claim.
C. They believe that life surely exists on K2-18b.
D. They confirm the discovery a big achievement.

Each April, tens of thousands of people flood to the heart of the Coachella Valley to camp, dance and sing at the music festival by that same name — Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
Unlike what the name might suggest, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival does not actually occur in the City of Coachella, but has been held in nearby Indio since its founding in 1999. Both are part of the Coachella Valley, which is located in Southern California of the US.
But it’s worth learning about Coachella, both the place and the festival. Coachella itself was a product of the country’s railroad system — and a spelling mistake. Since 1876, the Southern Pacific Railroad had been laying tracks throughout the valley. A railroad employee named Jason Rector was tasked with clearing the trees in that area, which was known as Woodspur. During the process of laying out the townsite in 1901, Rector proposed “Conchilla”, which means “little shell” in Spanish inspired by the shell fossils (化石) that were found in the area.
The developers, in agreement, designed a brochure that would announce the opening of the new town. But the product they got back from the printer misspelled “Conchilla” as “Coachella”. Rather than delay the announcement, they decided to roll with the name — which the valley itself went on to adopt. The town, however, didn’t become a city until 1946.
These days, the word “Coachella” itself means the most influential music festival out there. It was the brainchild of concert promoter Paul Tollett, who was helping a band book venues (场地). One of their performances ended up at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, showing Tollett how the venue could be perfect for the large festival of his dreams. Hoping to copy the music festivals that were so popular overseas, the organizers started the first Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 1999. It took a few years for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival to grow into the phenomenon it is today.
12. What do we know about Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival?
A It takes place in Coachella. B. It is held in Coachella Valley.
C. It was first celebrated in Coachella. D. It was later moved to Indio.
13. What did the word “Coachella” originally refer to?
A. Shell. B. Fossil. C. Railroad D. Nothing.
14. What does the underlined word “brainchild” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Idea. B. Goal. C. Mistake. D. Honor.
15. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. A Spelling Mistake Creating a Famous Music Event
B. The Development Journey of the City of Coachella
C. From Misprints to Music Magic: Coachella’s Story
D. From a Town to a Festival Ground: Fact About Indio

Generally, most of us rely on forecasts (预报) to tell us what kind of weather to expect. ____16____ Not only can predicting (预测) the weather be a fun hobby, it can also be a useful skill if you enjoy outdoor activities, such as hiking or camping. By learning what to look for, you can predict the weather without a forecast or technological device.
Determine the direction of the wind. Wind direction helps determine upcoming weather. Since weather moves in from the west, westerly winds indicate good weather because they suggest the bad weather is already to your east. Easterly winds suggest that the bad weather is coming toward you. You can use grass or leaves to determine the direction of the wind.____17____
Watch smoke from a fire. The air pressure determines what direction the smoke will go. In high pressure, the smoke will go directly up into the air. ____18____ When smoke circles downwards, it means that bad weather is very close.
____19____ Before a storm, the low-pressure system can push out the area’s normal wind patterns. This creates a temporary calm before the storm begins. You’ll notice a lack of wind, which creates stillness over the area. If you’re near water, it will be calm and still, as well. This calm indicates a coming storm.
Check for humidity (湿度). High humidity often comes before a storm, so watch for signs of high humidity, such as frizzy hair, curling leaves, and swollen wood. ____20____ if you live in an area that always has high humidity, rely on other observations to predict the weather.
A. Watch for calm conditions.
B. Keep an eye out for low pressure.
C. These signs can tell you that a storm is on the way.
D. If the pressure is low, it will circle back down around the fire.
E. Current weather forecasts can predict the weather for more than 30 days.
F. Throw your grass or leaves into the wind and watch the way that it blows or falls.
G. However, it is possible to predict the weather using your skills of observation and knowledge.

Kate walked hand-in-hand with her daughter, Holly, toward the restaurant, the cool evening air filled with the sound of excitement. Holly’s favorite restaurant wasn’t far, and her little feet almost skipped with joy as she looked up at her mother, her eyes wide with disbelief.
“You can order whatever you want, sweetie,” Kate said, her heart filling with happiness at being able to give her daughter this special treat. Being a single mother had been difficult for Kate ever since her husband passed away. Balancing a job that hardly paid enough while taking care of Holly had been a daily struggle. Money was always tight, but Kate was determined to make sure Holly never felt like she was missing out on love or happiness. She had been saving up for this dinner for a period of time, wishing to give Holly a birthday she would always remember.
As they stepped into the restaurant, Holly’s excitement was nearly impossible to contain. She rushed ahead to the table and looked through the menu eagerly. Holly’s small hands flipped through the menu, trying to decide between all the delicious options. But when Kate looked at the price on the menu, her thoughts raced, calculating the little money she had left after saving for months just to make this night special for Holly.
Thinking of her financial struggles, Kate stepped aside to the counter, where a waiter was serving a graceful lady wearing a white coat. With fear and embarrassment, Kate tried to keep her voice down and asked the waiter if they had any discount for the dinner.
“Ma’ am, we don’t have any discount,” the waiter said softly, his voice low but firm. And then he continued serving the woman. Hearing that, Kate returned to the table and her heart was heavy, forcing a smile for Holly, who was still joyfully choosing her favorite food, unaware of the concern inside her mother.

A It is mostly made up of phosphine.
D 9. A 10. C 11. B
根据第一段“On Earth, DMS is mostly made by tiny ocean plants. On other planets, it could be what’s called a biosignature (生命印记) .(在地球上,DMS主要是由微小的海洋植物产生的。在其他星球上,这可能是所谓的生物特征)”可知,DMS在地球上主要由海洋微生物产生,因此研究人员将其视为潜在的生命迹象。故选D。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“For Clara Sousa-Silva, an astrochemist at Bard College who has weathered the storm of the Venus biosignature debate in 2020, she now watches history repeat itself. “The situation is disappointingly familiar. We did not learn enough from the ‘phosphine on Venus’ event,” she said.(巴德学院(Bard College)的天体化学家克拉拉·索萨-席尔瓦(Clara Sousa-Silva)经受住了2020年金星生物特征辩论的风暴,她现在看着历史重演。“这种情况令人失望地熟悉。我们没有从‘金星上的磷化氢’事件中学到足够的东西,”她说)”推知,她对这一新发现持怀疑态度。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“Those scientists use JWST to discover gases in K2-18b’s atmosphere by analyzing how starlight changes as it passes through K2-18b’s atmosphere.(这些科学家利用JWST通过分析星光穿过K2-18b大气层时的变化来发现K2-18b大气中的气体)”可知,科学家通过分析星光穿过K2-18b大气层时的变化来检测气体。故选C。

A. It takes place in Coachella.
B 13. D 14. A 15. C

根据第二段中的“Unlike what the name might suggest, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival does not actually occur in the City of Coachella, but has been held in nearby Indio since its founding in 1999. Both are part of the Coachella Valley, which is located in Southern California of the US.(与名称可能暗示的不同,科切拉山谷音乐艺术节实际上并不在科切拉市举行,而是自1999年成立以来一直在附近的印第奥举行。两者都是位于美国南加州的科切拉山谷的一部分。)”可知,科切拉山谷音乐艺术节在科切拉山谷举行。故选B项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“But the product they got back from the printer misspelled “Conchilla” as “Coachella”. Rather than delay the announcement, they decided to roll with the name — which the valley itself went on to adopt. The town, however, didn’t become a city until 1946. (但他们从印刷厂取回的产品把“Conchilla”拼错成了“Coachella”。他们没有推迟宣布,而是决定沿用这个名字——这个山谷后来也采用了这个名字。)”可知,“Coachella”这个词最初没有实际意义,是拼写错误的结果。故选D项。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段中的“It was the brainchild of concert promoter Paul Tollett, who was helping a band book venues (场地). One of their performances ended up at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, showing Tollett how the venue could be perfect for the large festival of his dreams. 故选A项。

G 17. F 18. D 19. A 20. C

“so as to do sth.” 故填to allow。
“from...to...” 故填to。
故填a。
故填was told。
故填which。

I’m glad to know that you’re interested in our school’s Model Aircraft Club! Let me share some details.
Our club focuses on designing and building model aircraft, including planes and drones. Members learn engineering basics, flying techniques, and teamwork. We hold monthly workshops and compete in regional events, which are both fun and educational. Last year, we even won an award at a provincial exhibition!
To join, first, fill out the application form from the club office (Room 305) by May 20th. Next, prepare a brief self-introduction highlighting your passion for models or science. No prior experience is needed — enthusiasm matters most! Finally, attend a casual interview to discuss your interests.
I’d love to help you with the process. Let’s visit the club together after class tomorrow!
Yours,
Li Hua

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When Holly finished her meal, Kate went to pay the bill. Her hands trembled slightly as she handed the waiter the cash she had saved for months. The waiter took the money, but before he could give her the change, a gentle voice behind her said, “Excuse me, ma’am.” Kate turned around to see the woman in the white coat smiling at her. “I couldn’t help but overhear your conversation earlier,” the woman said. “I’d like to pay for your dinner as a birthday gift for your daughter.” Kate was too shocked to speak, her eyes filling with tears. “Thank you so much,” she managed to say. “You have no idea how much this means to us.”
Without hesitating, Kate rushed outside in search of the woman. She found her standing on the sidewalk, waiting for a taxi. “Wait!” Kate called out, running toward her. “I need to thank you properly.” The woman turned around and smiled. “It was my pleasure,” she said. “I remember what it’s like to be a single mother struggling to make ends meet. I hope this helps make your daughter’s birthday a little more special.” Kate hugged the woman tightly, grateful for her kindness. As she watched the taxi drive away, Kate realized that sometimes a small act of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life. She vowed to pay it forward someday, just like the woman in the white coat had done for her.
